BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is considered a complication in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). However, AECOPD may have risk factors for dysphagia. METHODS: Through a cross-sectional study, which included 100 patients with AECOPD. General information, Pulmonary function, COPD assessment test (CAT) and modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) were collected by questionnaire. The questionnaires were administered by uniform-trained investigators using standard and neutral language, and swallowing risk was assessed by using a water swallow test (WST) on the day of patient admission. RESULTS: Among the 100 included patients, 50(50%) were at risk of swallowing. Multivariate analysis using logistic regression analysis showed that age ≥ 74 years old, mMRC ≥ level 2, hospitalization days ≥ 7 days and the use of BIPAP assisted ventilation were important influencing factors for swallowing risk in patients with AECOPD. CONCLUSION: Patients with AECOPD are at risk for dysphagia, assessing age, mMRC, hospitalization days and the use of BIPAP assisted ventilation can be used to screen for swallowing risk, thus contributing to the implementation of early prevention measures.

With significant economic advantages, the plant floating bed has been widely utilized in the ecological remediation of eutrophic water because of the excessive phosphorus (P) and nitrogen discharge in China. Previous research has demonstrated that polyphosphate kinase (ppk)-expressing transgenic rice (Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica) (ETR) can increase the P absorption capacity to support rice growth and boost rice yield. In this study, the floating beds of ETR with single copy line (ETRS) and double copy line (ETRD) are built to investigate their capacity to remove aqueous P in slightly polluted water. Compared with the wild type Nipponbare (WT) floating bed, the ETR floating beds greatly reduce the total P concentration in slightly polluted water though the ETR floating beds have the same removal rates of chlorophyll-a, NO3--N, and total nitrogen in slightly polluted water. The P uptake rate of ETRD on the floating bed is 72.37% in slightly polluted water, which is higher than that of ETRS and WT on the floating beds. Polyphosphate (polyP) synthesis is a critical factor for the excessive phosphate uptake of ETR on the floating beds. The synthesis of polyP decreases the level of free intracellular phosphate (Pi) in ETR on the floating beds, simulating the phosphate starvation signaling. The OsPHR2 expression in the shoot and root of ETR on the floating bed increased, and the corresponding P metabolism gene expression in ETR was changed, which promoted Pi uptake by ETR in slightly polluted water. The Pi accumulation further promoted the growth of ETR on the floating beds. These findings highlight that the ETR floating beds, especially ETRD floating bed, have significant potential for P removal and can be exploited as a novel method for phytoremediation in slightly polluted water.

The diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is of great significance for the early risk classification of sudden cardiac death and the screening of family genetic diseases. This research proposed a HCM automatic detection method based on convolution neural network (CNN) model, using single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) signal as the research object. Firstly, the R-wave peak locations of single-lead ECG signal were determined, followed by the ECG signal segmentation and resample in units of heart beats, then a CNN model was built to automatically extract the deep features in the ECG signal and perform automatic classification and HCM detection. The experimental data is derived from 108 ECG records extracted from three public databases provided by PhysioNet, the database established in this research consists of 14,459 heartbeats, and each heartbeat contains 128 sampling points. The results revealed that the optimized CNN model could effectively detect HCM, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were 95.98%, 98.03% and 95.79% respectively. In this research, the deep learning method was introduced for the analysis of single-lead ECG of HCM patients, which could not only overcome the technical limitations of conventional detection methods based on multi-lead ECG, but also has important application value for assisting doctor in fast and convenient large-scale HCM preliminary screening.

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a cyclic heptapeptide; it is an intracellular toxin released by cyanobacteria that exhibits strong reproductive toxicity. Previous studies have demonstrated that MC-LR induces oxidative stress in granulosa cells by damaging the mitochondria, which eventually leads to follicle atresia and female subfertility. In the present study, granulosa cells were exposed to 0, 0.01, 0.1 and 1 µM MC-LR. After 24 h, we observed changes in mitochondrial cristae morphology and dynamics by analyzing the results of mitochondrial transmission electron microscopy and detecting the expression of DRP1. We also evaluated glucose intake using biochemical assays and expression of glucose transport related proteins. MC-LR exposure resulted in mitochondrial fragmentation and glucose intake decrease in granulosa cells, as shown by increasing mitochondrial fission via dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) upregulation and decreasing glucose transporter 1 and 4 (GLUT1 and GLUT4). Furthermore, the expression levels of forkhead box protein M1 (FOXM1) significantly increased due to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) after MC-LR exposure. Our results proved that MC-LR exposure causes mitochondrial fragmentation and glucose intake decrease in granulosa cells, which provides new insights to study the molecular mechanism of female reproductive toxicity induced by MC-LR.

Health risk of human exposure to microcystin-leucine arginine (MC-LR) has drawn more and more attention in recent years. In the present study, MC-LR inhibited miR-3473g expression of mouse granulosa cells both in vitro and in vivo. By dual-luciferase reporter assay, we confirmed miR-3473g is able to bind the 3'-UTR of StAR protein (StAR) mRNA and suppress StAR expression. Thus, downregulation of miR-3473g after MC-LR exposure led to StAR overexpression. Excessive StAR probably transported much more cholesterol into the inner membrane of the mitochondria and finally resulted in overproduction of progesterone. Our results revealed that MC-LR exposure was associated with premature luteinization of granulosa cells and may adversely affect women's fertility.

In this paper, we analyzed medical records of 40 patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19), in order to explore the clinical efficacy of Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection in the treatment of COVID-19. The investigation was based on the results of a previous animal test, which was aimed to investigate and confirme the clinical efficacy of Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection in the treatment of COVID-19. The animal test demonstrated that Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection has a significant therapeutic effect on the human coronavirus pneumonia for the model mice. The lung inhibition index reached up to 86.86%. The evaluation was conducted on 40 confirmed cases of COVID-19 treated at Jingzhou Hospital of Infectious Disease(Chest Hospital) of Hubei Pro-vince from January 30~(th) to March 21~(th), 2020. In these cases, patients were treated with other integrated Chinese and Western medicines regimens in the recommended Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection diagnosis and treatment regimen. The clinical manifestations, laboratory data, nucleic acid clearance time, and imaging data were compared and analyzed before and after treatment. After administration with Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection, the clinical symptoms of 40 cases were alleviated markedly, and their blood analysis and biochemical indexes returned to normal. The lung CT showed more than 50% of lesion absorption rate, and the viral nucleic acid test showed the average clearance time of patients was 16.6 days, and the average length of hospital stay was 25.9 days. After administration with Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection, the symptoms of cough and fatigue were alleviated significantly, and the appetite was significantly improved compared with before, especially for patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. Additionally, laboratory indicators, especially absolute value and ratio of lymphocytes and CRP were significantly alleviated. According to the chest CT for short-term review, the absorption of lung lesions was faster than before, especially for grid-like and fibrotic lesions. Compared with antiviral drugs, such as Abidol and Kriging, the nucleic acid clearance time was significantly shorter than the cases treated with Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection. The clinical effective rate of 40 cases was 100.0%. We believed that Matrine and Sodium Chloride Injection have a good clinical effect in the treatment of COVID-19, and suggested increasing the clinical application and further conducting large-sample-size cli-nical verification.

Paeonol is the main active compound in the root bark extract of the peony tree, and it has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies have reported the neuroprotective effects of paeonol including its capacity in improving impaired memory. However, the effect of paeonol on epilepsy is yet to be demystified. We aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of paeonol in epilepsy and its relationship with oxidative stress damage and neuronal loss in the rat brain to reveal the underlying mechanisms of epileptic seizures. A rat model for chronic epilepsy was established, and the seizure scores of the rats in different groups were recorded. The seizure duration and the seizure onset latency were used to evaluate the anticonvulsant effects of paeonol. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end-labeling staining, Nissl staining and H/E staining were used to evaluate the effects of paeonol on neuronal loss and apoptosis in epileptic rats. The colorimetric assessment of malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase activity and total antioxidant capacity of paeonol were used in assessing paeonol's effect on oxidative stress in epileptic rats. Evaluation of Caspase-3 mRNA and protein expression levels were determined using western blot and quantitative real-time (RT-q)PCR. In this study, we found that paeonol reduced the seizure scores of epileptic rats and attenuated the duration and onset latency of seizures. Paeonol can also increase the activities of total antioxidant capacity, SOD and catalase activity and reduce MDA content as well. This suggests that paeonol can improve the level of oxidative stress in rats. More significantly, paeonol can improve neuronal loss and apoptosis in epileptic rats. These results indicate that paeonol has anticonvulsant and neuroprotective effects in epileptic rats. This effect may be caused by reducing oxidative stress.

A new cell electrochemical detecting system has been constructed based on the hyposmotic principle, in which the electrochemical signals have been strengthened by about 109.75% for the signal at about +0.70 V and 532.94% for the signal at about +1.03 V. The electrochemical detection limits of the cells have been improved by one order of magnitude. The individual concentrations of intracellular purines have been obtained.

BACKGROUND: The elderly population with liver metastasis from colorectal cancer has been increasing. As the potentially curative treatment, the role of liver resection in the elderly remains undetermined. AIMS: This study provides a meta-analysis on the outcome of liver resection of colorectal liver metastasis in patients aged over 70. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases from the years 2000 to 2015 were searched for eligible studies. Data on perioperative mortality, postoperative complications, and survival were collected. RESULTS: Twelve retrospective studies with a total of 11,285 patients (2498 elderly patients and 8787 younger patients) were identified. The elderly (>70 years old) were associated with a similar overall complication rate (30.5 vs. 28.0%; OR 1.08; 95% CI 0.91-1.28; p = 0.39) and a higher 30-day mortality (OR 1.92; 95% CI 1.12-3.31; p = 0.02) after liver resection of colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM). The overall survival showed a significant difference in favor of the younger patients (HR 0.76; 95% CI 0.65-0.89; p = 0.0007). However, with regard to disease-free survival, there was no significant difference between elderly and younger patients (HR 0.93; 95% CI 0.82-1.06; p = 0.30). CONCLUSION: Liver resection of CRLM is relatively safe in carefully selected elderly patients. Liver resection should be offered to selected elderly patients with CRLM.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases (BMs) represents a severe neurological complication stemming from cancers originating from various sources. It is a highly challenging clinical task to accurately distinguish the pathological subtypes of brain metastatic tumors from lung cancer (LC).The utility of 2.5-dimensional (2.5D) deep learning (DL) in distinguishing pathological subtypes of LC with BMs is yet to be determined. METHODS: A total of 250 patients were included in this retrospective study, divided in a 7:3 ratio into training set (N=175) and testing set (N=75). We devised a method to assemble a series of two-dimensional (2D) images by extracting adjacent slices from a central slice in both superior-inferior and anterior-posterior directions to form a 2.5D dataset. Multi-Instance learning (MIL) is a weakly supervised learning method that organizes training instances into "bags" and provides labels for entire bags, with the purpose of learning a classifier based on the labeled positive and negative bags to predict the corresponding class for an unknown bag. Therefore, we employed MIL to construct a comprehensive 2.5D feature set. Then we used the single-slice as input for constructing the 2D model. DL features were extracted from these slices using the pre-trained ResNet101. All feature sets were inputted into the support vector machine (SVM) for evaluation. The diagnostic performance of the classification models were evaluated using five-fold cross-validation, with accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) metrics calculated for analysis. RESULTS: The optimal performance was obtained using the 2.5D DL model, which achieved the micro-AUC of 0.868 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.817-0.919) and accuracy of 0.836 in the test cohort. The 2D model achieved the micro-AUC of 0.836 (95 % CI, 0.778-0.894) and accuracy of 0.827 in the test cohort. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed 2.5D DL model is feasible and effective in identifying pathological subtypes of BMs from lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with stroke frequently experience pulmonary dysfunction. AIM: To explore the effects of information-motivation-behavioral (IMB) skills model-based nursing care on pulmonary function, blood gas indices, complication rates, and quality of life (QoL) in stroke patients with pulmonary dysfunction. METHODS: We conducted a controlled study involving 120 stroke patients with pulmonary dysfunction. The control group received routine care, whereas the intervention group received IMB-model-based nursing care. Various parameters including pulmonary function, blood gas indices, complication rates, and QoL were assessed before and after the intervention. RESULTS: Baseline data of the control and intervention groups were comparable. Post-intervention, the IMB model-based care group showed significant improvements in pulmonary function indicators, forced expiratory volume in 1 sec, forced vital capacity, and peak expiratory flow compared with the control group. Blood gas indices, such as arterial oxygen pressure and arterial oxygen saturation, increased significantly, and arterial carbon dioxide partial. pressure decreased significantly in the IMB model-based care group compared with the control group. The intervention group also had a lower complication rate (6.67% vs 23.33%) and higher QoL scores across all domains than the control group. CONCLUSION: IMB model-based nursing care significantly enhanced pulmonary function, improved blood gas indices, reduced complication rates, and improved the QoL of stroke patients with pulmonary dysfunction. Further research is needed to validate these results and to assess the long-term efficacy and broader applicability of the model.

Biofilm is one of the important factors affecting nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands (CWs). However, the impact of submerged macrophyte on nitrogen conversion of biofilms on leaf of submerged macrophyte and matrix remains poorly understood. In this study, the CWs with Vallisneria natans and with artificial plant were established to investigate the effects of submerged macrophyte on nitrogen conversion and the composition of nitrogen-converting bacteria in leaf and matrix biofilms under high ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) loading. The 16S rRNA sequencing method was employed to explore the changes in bacterial communities in biofilms in CWs. The results showed that average removal rates of total nitrogen and NH4+-N in CW with V. natans reached 71.38% and 82.08%, respectively, representing increases of 24.19% and 28.79% compared with the control with artificial plant. Scanning electron microscope images indicated that high NH4+-N damaged the leaf cells of V. natans, leading to the cellular content release and subsequent increases of aqueous total organic carbon. However, the specific surface area and carrier function of V. natans were unaffected within 25 days. As a natural source of organic matters, submerged macrophyte provided organic matters for bacterial growth in biofilms. Bacterial composition analysis revealed the predominance of phylum Proteobacteria in CW with V. natans. The numbers of nitrifiers and denitrifiers in leaf biofilms reached 1.66 × 105 cells/g and 1.05 × 107 cells/g, as well as 2.79 × 105 cells/g and 7.41 × 107 cells/g in matrix biofilms, respectively. Submerged macrophyte significantly increased the population of nitrogen-converting bacteria and enhanced the expressions of nitrification genes (amoA and hao) and denitrification genes (napA, nirS and nosZ) in both leaf and matrix biofilms. Therefore, our study emphasized the influence of submerged macrophyte on biofilm functions and provided a scientific basis for nitrogen removal of biofilms in CWs.

All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are considered as the most promising candidates for the next-generation high-safety batteries. To achieve high energy density in ASSLMBs, it is essential that the solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are lightweight, thin, and possess superior electrochemical stability. In this study, a feasible and scalable fabrication approach to construct 3D supporting skeleton using an electro-blown spinning technique is proposed. This skeleton not only enhances the mechanical strength but also hinders the migration of Li-salt anions, improving the lithium-ion transference number of the SSE. This provides a homogeneous distribution of Li-ion flux and local current density, promoting uniform Li deposition. As a result, based on the mechanically robust and thin SSEs, the Li symmetric cells show outstanding Li plating/stripping reversibility. Besides, a stable interface contact between SSE and Li anode has been established with the formation of an F-enriched solid electrolyte interface layer. The solid-state Li|sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (Li|SPAN) cell achieves a capacity retention ratio of 94.0% after 350 cycles at 0.5 C. Also, the high-voltage Li|LCO cell shows a capacity retention of 92.4% at 0.5 C after 500 cycles. This fabrication approach for SSEs is applicable for commercially large-scale production and application in high-energy-density and high-safety ASSLMBs.

Background: Atherosclerosis (AS) is closely related to stroke and cardiovascular diseases. Nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) is the master regulator of inflammation, and thus, modulating the transcription of NF-κB can improve AS. Methods: In this study, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify the frontiers, hotspots, and features of global research output on NF-κB in AS from 2000 to 2021. Papers published from 2000 to 2021 and the recorded information were retrieved from the Science Citation Index-Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis and visualization were performed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace, including an analysis of the general distribution of annual output, highly productive countries, active journals, active institutions and authors, keywords, and co-cited references. Results: A total of 5,439 original articles and reviews were retrieved and analyzed, and the results indicated that the annual number of publications on NF-κB in AS has been increasing in waves over the past 22 years. The majority of papers were published in China, while the USA had the highest number of citations and H-index. The most productive affiliation and journal were the University of California System and Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, respectively. The papers of Chiu JJ. received the highest number of citations globally in 2011. The keywords, "nlrp3 inflammasome" and "microRNA", have recently attracted considerable attention, and very frequently occurring keywords included "NF kappa B", "atherosclerosis", "expression", "activation", "endogenous cell", and "oxidative stress". New keywords in 2021 included "muscle", "attenuates atherosclerosis", "mesenchymal transition", "metabolic disorder", and "palmitic acid". Conclusions: AS and inflammation have become research hotspots lately. Over the past decade, most studies have focused on basic research, and pathways associated with the regulatory role of NF-κB in AS have become a particular focus in recent studies. Moreover, our study revealed that NF-κB plays a remarkable role in AS and may be a therapeutic target.

Phosphorus (P) plays a crucial role in plant growth. Insufficient availability of inorganic phosphate (Pi) can significantly impact crop yields. To address this, we previously developed transgenic rice expressing the low polyphosphate kinase gene (ppk) - known as ETRS - to enhance the efficiency of P resource utilization. Previous studies have shown that ETRS thrives and presents high yields in the low P culture. ETRS and wild-type rice (WT) were cultivated to the heading stage at 15 µM of P in the low P (LP) culture and 300 µM of P in the normal culture (CK) to identify the molecular pathways behind low P tolerance. Our findings revealed that polyphosphate (polyP) significantly enhanced the growth performance of ETRS in the LP culture. This enhanced tolerance can be attributed to polyP's capacity to mitigate oxidative damage induced by LP. This was evidenced by the reduction in levels of superoxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde. PolyP also improved the antioxidant capacity of ETRS under LP stress by regulating enzymatic antioxidants viz., superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), as well as non-enzymatic antioxidants such as ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH). In addition, transcriptomics analysis suggested that polyP synthesis positively promoted the expressions of SOD, POD, and CAT related genes and played an active role in regulating the expression of AsA-GSH cycle system related genes in ETRS in the LP culture. These results strongly support the notion that polyP within ETRS mitigates oxidative damage through enhancement of the antioxidant system, ultimately bolstering tolerance to LP conditions.

Recently, electrolysis technology has been widely applied in nitrogen and phosphorus removal in river water due to its high efficiency, but its effects on aquatic animals, especially on their neurodevelopmental system, are still unclear. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos were used as model organisms and were put into an electrolytic reaction device with a Ti/IrO2/RuO2 mesh plate as the anode and a Ti mesh plate as the cathode to explore the effects of prolonged electrolysis on the nervous system. The neural development of zebrafish embryos was injured when the current density was greater than 0.89 A/m2. Compared with the control group, the movement speed of zebrafish larvae (120 h postfertilization, hpf) was significantly reduced from 65.48 ± 23.69 to 48.08 ± 22.73 mm/min in a dark environment with an electric current density of 0.89 A/m2 in the electrolysis group. In addition, the acetylcholinesterase activity of zebrafish larvae (120 hpf) gradually decreased from 7.60 ± 0.55 to 6.00 ± 0.01 U/mg prot and the dopamine concentration was reduced from 46.96 ± 0.85 to 40.86 ± 1.05 pg/mL with an electric current density from 0 to 0.89 A/m2 in the electrolysis groups. Furthermore, the expression of nerve-related genes (syn2a, mbp, nestin, and AChE) was significantly inhibited when the current density was more than 0.89 A/m2. However, there were few adverse effects on the neural development of zebrafish embryos when the current density was less than 0.86 A/m2. Thus, a current density of 0.86 A/m2 is a reference value to reduce the harm to the neural development of fish when electrolysis technology is used in river water pollutant treatment.

Water seepage-induced geological hazards (SIGHs), including landslides, collapse, debris flow, and ground fissures, often cause substantial human mortality, economic losses, and environmental damage. However, an early warning of geological water seepage remains a significant challenge. A self-powered, cost-effective, reliable, and susceptible SIGH early warning system (SIGH-EWS) is reported herein. This system designed the all-solid, sustainable, fire retardant, and safe-to-use bio-ionotronic batteries to provide a stable power supply for Internet of Things chipsets. Furthermore, the batteries' outstanding humidity and water sensitivity allow sensing of the water seepage emergence. Integrating energy management and wireless communication systems, the SIGH-EWS realizes timely alerts for early water seepage in different water and soil environments with a time resolution in seconds. Based on these merits, the SIGH-EWS demonstrates promising application prospects for early warning of geological disasters and corresponding design strategies that can potentially guide the designs of next-generation geological hazard alarm systems.

Objective: This study is oriented to study the correlation between different vestibular symptoms and migraine and non-migraine headaches. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire containing factors related to vestibular symptoms and migraine was designed to survey nurses in a tertiary hospital. Then, all study subjects were divided into three groups: no headache, migraine, and non-migraine headache, and the general physical condition and incidence of different vestibular symptoms were compared among the three groups. Results: Among all the 708 subjects, 233 had headaches. The incidence of migraine was 13.3%. There were 235 cases had vestibular symptoms. Dizziness and vertigo are independent factors related to headaches, especially migraine. The risk of migraine and other types of headaches in the vertigo group is 2.808 and 2.526 times of those without vertigo, while in the dizziness group, the risk is 8.248 and 5.732 times of those without dizziness. Conclusion: Different vestibular symptoms were all related to migraine. And different vestibular symptoms and non-migraine headaches also showed a clear correlation.

Early experimental studies have demonstrated that microcystin-leucine arginine (MC-LR) is able to induce multiple organ damage. Female reproductive disorders caused by MC-LR have attracted increased attention in recent years. However, the underlying mechanisms of female reproductive malfunctions are not yet fully understood. Our previous study confirmed that MC-LR could enter mice ovary, induce apoptosis of ovarian granulosa cell and lead to follicular atresia. Research shows that ovary inflammation is positively related to the decline of female reproductive function. This study was aimed to find out the relationship between inflammation response and ovarian injury caused by MC-LR. MC-LR were administrated at 0, 7.5, 22.5 and 45 µg/kg for two weeks by intraperitoneal injection in female BALB/c mice. Histopathological analysis of ovary was performed. We found that MC-LR exposure induced inflammation response and fibrosis in ovary. In the present study, we observed that MC-LR could enter ovary and was mainly distributed in mGCs (mouse ovarian granulosa cells), but not in the theca-interstitial cells. We isolated and cultured mGCs with different concentrations of MC-LR at 0, 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 µM. MC-LR exposure caused mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) leakage which was detected by qPCR andimmunofluorescence staining. Subsequently, mtDNA leakage activated cGAS-STING signaling, leading to elevated production of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α in mGCs.Diffusion of TNF-α in ovary resulted in inflammatory cell infiltration and interstitial cell proliferation. Ovarian inflammation provides a new perspective to explore the underlying mechanisms associated with MC-LR-induced female reproductive dysfunction.

Cyanobacterial blooms appear more strongly, constantly and globally, yet the positive effect of surface solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) on cyanobacterial bloom in natural freshwater habitats is largely ignored. Here in-situ and laboratory studies were jointly designed to probe the mechanism of cyanobacterial bloom promoted by solar UV light. The results showed that solar UV light is a key trigger factor for the accumulation of total phosphorus, dissolved inorganic phosphorus and polyphosphate (polyP) in blooming cyanobacterial cells. The increase of UV dose induces polyP accumulation to result in the excessive phosphorus uptake of blooming cyanobacteria, which provides sufficient phosphorus for cyanobacterial growth in suitable environment. Solar UV light also can promote the contents of phycocyanin, allophycocyanin, and phycoerythrin, producing sufficient ATP by photosynthesis for polyP synthesis in cyanobacterial cells in lake enviroment. The frequent variations of UV irradiance exposure prompts cyanobacteria to absorb excessive phosphorus from suspended solid or sediment. Cyanobacterial intracellular phosphorus is accumulated for their growth. UV light promotes polyP accumulation in blooming cyanobacterial cells to avoid damage. The adsorption amount of phosphorus increases for exuberant growth and then more surface blooming cyanobacteria are exposed to UV light to absorb ample phosphorus. Thus, the positive feedback occurs in lake water bodies with abundant phosphorus. This amplified cycle of cyanobacterial density and phosphorus due to solar UV light in eutrophic water bodies is analogous to a triode to amplify visible photosynthesis by UV light as a base electric current in the energy flow process in lake environment, therefore, "Cyanobacterial Phosphorus Assimilation Ultraviolet Effect" is used to describe this phenomenon. A new explanation is provided for the continuing proliferating mechanism of cyanobacterial bloom. Besides, a new perspective appears on the outbreak of cyanobacterial blooms in natural eutrophic lake water bodies worldwide.
