AIM: To examine the relationship between mental health continuum and care dependence of hospitalized patients, who were diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). DESIGN: Descriptive, cross-sectional study. METHODS: The data were obtained from 448 inpatients diagnosed with COPD, who were treated in clinics, by utilizing questionnaires and face-to-face interviews between November 2021 and February 2022. The Mental Health Continuum Short Form and Care Dependency Scale were used by the researchers with the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics form created in line with the literature. The data were analysed using the SPSS 23.0 software. RESULTS: It was determined that a moderately significant positive relationship between mental health continuum and care dependency. In addition, the patient's perception of own health, disease stage and severity of dyspnoea were also found to be associated with mental health and care dependency. Gender, marital status, employment status and income level were found to be associated with mental health continuum, but not with care dependency. Advanced age, low educational level, alcohol consumption, antidepressant use and comorbidities were found to be associated with both care dependency and mental health continuum. CONCLUSION: Individuals with COPD who have low mental health, poor health perception, high disease stage and dyspnoea severity have high care dependency. IMPACT: In this study, it was revealed that the level of mental health continuum was significantly associated with care dependency in individuals with COPD; in addition, the individual's perception of poor health, disease stage and dyspnoea severity were other factors associated with care dependency. It is important for nurses working with individuals with COPD to evaluate the mental health of individuals with poor health perception, high disease stage and dyspnoea severity and to plan appropriate interventions to reduce care dependency. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution was required in the design, conduct, analysis or interpretation of this study. Patients/public members only contributed to data collection. Data were obtained from patients hospitalized in the chest diseases clinic of a training and research hospital.

BACKGROUND: Socially marginalised patients face many challenges related to their health condition and often have several contacts with healthcare and social service workers. The Danish social nursing initiative, whose nurses have experience and knowledge about marginalisation, aims to support socially marginalised patients during hospital admission and through hospital transitions. However, there is limited knowledge about the hospital transitions of patients being supported by a social nurse. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to explore (1) the perspectives of socially marginalised patients on the transition from hospital to home and (2) how these patients experience the importance of social nursing on patient trajectories after hospital discharge. METHODS: A qualitative study with a phenomenological and hermeneutic approach was performed at a large hospital in southern Denmark. Adult patients who had contact with a social nurse during hospital admission were purposely sampled. Data were collected between January 2023 and March 2023. Initial patient interviews were conducted during hospital admission with a second interview 7-22 days after discharge. Systematic text condensation was used for the analysis, and Nvivo 12 supported data storage and coding. ETHICAL APPROVAL: The study is registered with the Danish Data Protection Agency (22/47509). Informed consent was given by the participants. RESULTS: Sixteen patients participated in the study. The participants experienced major challenges in their transitions from the hospital, which were generally related to their interactions with many different social and healthcare services. While the social nurses supported the patients and helped facilitate care during hospital admission and after discharge, the participants identified transitional care gaps related to multidisciplinary cooperation and standardised care options. CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies challenges related to the hospital transition of socially marginalised patients, which indicates a gap in healthcare services. Future research should focus on improving interprofessional collaboration with socially marginalised patients across healthcare services.

BACKGROUND: Socially marginalised people are at a substantially increased risk of diseases and typically have several contacts with the healthcare system. Health professionals at hospitals often lack the knowledge, skills, confidence, and time to provide relevant care for socially marginalised patients. Danish hospitals have implemented a social nursing initiative consisting of social nurses with specialised knowledge about marginalisation to support socially marginalised patients. Limited research into patients' perceptions of social nursing has been undertaken. OBJECTIVE: To explore patients' experiences with the in-hospital social nursing initiative. DESIGN: A qualitative study was conducted using a phenomenological hermeneutical approach. SETTING: Odense University Hospital, Denmark. PARTICIPANTS: Patients aged 18 years and older who had been in contact with a social nurse during hospital admission were purposely sampled. Data saturation was reached when 15 participants were recruited. METHODS: In-depth patient interviews were conducted from November 2021 to April 2022 using a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using systematic text condensation. NVivo 12 software was employed for the analysis. Patient representatives were involved to validate the analysis and interpretations. RESULTS: Three themes were identified: (1) an equal and trusting relationship, (2) receiving person-centred care, and (3) coherence in the patient trajectory. The results show that when patients have established a relationship with a social nurse, they are willing to let her into their lives and share personal information. Patients also experience person-centred care and coherence in their trajectory when a social nurse participated in their treatment and care. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the social nursing initiative bridges the gap between socially marginalised patients and healthcare services.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between public health nurses' holistic nursing and social justice advocacy competencies in terms of their attitudes toward sustainable development goals. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SAMPLE: The study sample consisted of 384 public health nurses. MEASUREMENTS: Data were collected with the personal information form, the Attitudes toward Sustainable Development Scale, the Holistic Nursing Competence Scale, and the Social Justice Advocacy Scale. RESULTS: The sub-dimensions of environment, public, education, and economy were found to significantly affect social justice advocacy, and the indirect effects of 0.191, 0.222, 0.205, and 0.201 were found to be statistically significant with the inclusion of holistic nursing competence in the model, respectively. It was found to explain 32%, 30%, 29%, and 22% of the total effect, respectively. CONCLUSION: It supports the claim that developing public health nurses' holistic nursing competence and social justice advocacy skills is an important criterion for achieving sustainable development goals.

This cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the relationship between the COVID-19 burnout levels of nurses and their holistic nursing competence. The data were collected from 468 nurses working in a hospital between 1 August 2021-9 September 2021 by using a Sociodemographic Information Form, the COVID-19 Burnout Scale(BCV-19S), the Holistic Nursing Competence Scale(HNCS). The mean scores on the total BCV-19S and HNCS were 36.36(9.51) and 194.27(35.71),respectively. It was found that the mean score on the total BCV-19S was significantly higher in nurses worked ≥ 51 hours a week on average, worked in the COVID-19 pandemic unit (p < 0.05). The mean score of nurses who worked ≤ 40 hours a week on average on the total HNCS was significantly higher (p < 0.05). In this study, it was determined that nurses' COVID-19 burnout levels and holistic nursing competence were high. Nurses' COVID-19 burnout levels positively affected their holistic nursing competence.

The spiritual health of elderly residents in nursing homes is an essential aspect of their overall health that has been overlooked. There are no specific practical models available in this area. Therefore, the present study aimed to design a model to promote the spiritual health of Muslim elderly residents in nursing homes. This qualitative study is part of a larger study conducted in Iran in 2021 to design a model for the spiritual health of elderly residents in nursing homes in Islamic countries. The first part of the study was conducted using a qualitative method and a grounded theory approach. In the second part, using the findings of the qualitative stage and the theoretical production approach of Walker and Avant (2011), which includes three stages of determining central concepts, reviewing texts, and organizing concepts and statements within a relevant whole, a model for the spiritual health of elderly residents in nursing homes was designed. The resulting model includes assumptions, concepts, objectives, and operational strategies. Some crucial strategies of this model include improving social and organizational infrastructure, spiritual needs assessment, improving the structure and facilities of nursing homes, providing spiritual support, empowering nurses, likewise caregivers, and monitoring and evaluating corrective spiritual care. This model can provide a framework for enhancing the spiritual health of elderly Muslim residents in nursing homes by emphasizing improving the social structure and elderly care centers, assessing spiritual needs, providing spiritual support, and evaluating implemented measures.

BACKGROUND: Holistic nursing care is an approach to patient care that takes into account the physical, social, spiritual, and psychological needs of the patient. Providing holistic care has been found to be an effective way to prevent diseases and death, as well as improve the quality of healthcare provided to patients. However, despite its perceived benefits, many nurses lack experience with holistic care and only focus on patients' physical needs, treating them as biological machines while ignoring their spiritual, mental, and social needs. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the practice of holistic nursing care and its associated factors among nurses. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 sampled Nurses working in public hospitals in Wolaita Zone. Systematic random sampling was applied to select the study participants. A self-administered, pretested questionnaire was used to collect the data. The collected data were entered into Epi Data version 4.6 and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with holistic nursing care practice. Statistical significance was declared at a p-value less than 0.05. The strength of the association was indicated by the AOR and 95% CI. RESULT: The study found that the overall practice of holistic nursing care was 21%. Nurses with a diploma in nursing (AOR: 0.28; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.71), nurses working in a hospital with no continuous in-service learning (AOR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.20, 0.76), nurses with a poor relationship with patients (AOR: 0.31; 95% CI: 0.16, 0.58), and nurses with poor knowledge of holistic nursing care practice (AOR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.21, 0.7) were factors associated with a lower likelihood of practicing holistic nursing care. CONCLUSION: This study found that the practice of holistic nursing care among nurses working in public hospitals in the Wolaita Zone was low. Level of education, the unit of work, continuous in-service learning, the nurse-patient relationship, and the knowledge of nurses were factors associated with holistic nursing care. The provision of in-service training and the creation of trusting, positive relationships were suggested to improve the practice of holistic nursing care.

BACKGROUND: New treatment options have significantly improved the life expectancy of myeloma patients such that their cause of death is increasingly likely to be from something other than myeloma. Furthermore, the adverse effects of short- or long-term treatments as well as the disease are impacting on quality of life (QoL) for longer periods of time. Understanding people's QoL and what is important to them, is part of providing holistic care. Although QoL data has been collected for many years in myeloma studies, they have not been used to inform patient outcomes. There is growing evidence that supports the assessment of 'fitness' and consideration of QoL as part of routine myeloma care. A national survey was carried out to discover which QoL tools are currently being used in the routine care of myeloma patients, by whom and at which time point. METHODS: An online survey using SurveyMonkey was adopted for flexibility and accessibility. The link to the survey was circulated via Bloodwise, Myeloma UK and Cancer Research UK contact lists. Paper questionnaires were circulated at the UK Myeloma Forum. RESULTS: Data about practices in 26 centres were collected. This included sites across England and Wales. Three out of 26 centres collect QoL data as part of standard care. QoL tools used include EORTC QLQ-My20/24, MyPOS, FACT-BMT and Quality of Life Index. Questionnaires were completed by patients before, during or after a clinic appointment. Clinical nurse specialists calculate the scores and create a care plan. CONCLUSION: Despite growing evidence to support an holistic approach to management of myeloma patients, there is a lack of evidence to confirm that health-related QoL is being addressed in standard care. This is an area that needs further research.

Baccalaureate nursing graduates (BSNs) in the 21st century need to be prepared to manage the population health needs of diverse populations across the lifespan and take actions to improve health equity. A need for a Holistic Health Determinants Model that included the Social Determinants of Health was identified. A model incorporating the Healthy People 2020 Health Determinants Model and the Healthy People 2030 Social Determinants of Health Model was developed. Two theoretical approaches provided a foundation for the model. Social ecological theory stresses the lived experience in an ever-changing environment from the micro to the macro biological, behavioral, social and physical environmental levels. Public health intersectionality added the construct of constant interactions among the health determinants that resulted in different levels of health status among individuals and groups. This Holistic Health Determinants Model is a tool to use in teaching nursing students how to address the needs of individuals/families, diverse populations, and communities. It also facilitates integration of the new AACN Population Health Competencies across the curriculum. The model facilitates the preparation of BSN graduates to address the factors that shape health status and to take actions to improve health equity.

BACKGROUND: People with dementia are most at risk of experiencing serious health related suffering, if they do not have a palliative care approach introduced early enough in the illness. It can be challenging for nurses to assess experienced needs of people, who are thought no longer able to self-report such as people with dementia. Assessment help to understand the care the patient and their family need promptly. It is unknown how nurses recognise holistic palliative care needs in people with dementia during routine care. METHODS: Scoping review where EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycInfo databases, and references were searched with an advanced search strategy, which was built on three concepts (nurses, dementia, and nursing assessment) using corresponding Medical Subject Headings. Data were charted in a piloted extraction form, based on the assessment domains within the nursing process followed by summarise and synthesise results narratively. RESULTS: 37 out of 2,028 qualitative and quantitative articles published between 2000 and 2021, and relating to 2600 + nurses, were identified. Pain was sole focus of assessment in 29 articles, leaving 8 articles to describe assessment of additional needs (e.g., discomfort). Nurses working in a nursing home assess pain and other needs by observing the persons with dementia behaviour during routine care. Nurses in the acute care setting are more likely to assess symptoms with standard assessment tools at admission and evaluate symptoms by observational methods. Across settings, about one third of pain assessments are supported by person-centred pain assessment tools. Assessments were mostly triggered when the person with dementia vocalised discomfort or a change in usual behaviour was observed. Nurses rely on family members and colleagues to gain more information about needs experienced by people with dementia. CONCLUSION: There is a scarcity of evidence about techniques and methods used by nurses to assess needs other than pain experienced by people with dementia. A holistic, person-centred screening tool to aid real-time observations at the bedside and used in conversations with health care professionals and families/friends, may improve need recognition other than pain, to ensure holistic needs could then be addressed timely to improve care in people with dementia.

This paper presents the author's model of humility structures that can be operationalized as behaviours and incorporated into healthcare practice, the Humility in Health Care Model. The Humility in Health Care Model expands and combines the concepts of cultural humility, holistic nursing, servant leadership and the Chinese concept 'QIAN'. The paper identifies ways to create a regular practice of humility behaviours on the personal/interpersonal, leadership, systems and policy levels. The paper discusses the benefits of operationalizing humility, forces that favour humility and barriers to practicing its behaviours. Suggestions for future research on humility in the healthcare professions are offered.

The need for human touch is universal among critical care patients and is an important component of the nurse-patient relationship. However, multiple barriers to human touch exist in the critical care environment. With little research to guide practice, we argue for the importance of human touch in the provision of holistic nursing care.

BACKGROUND: Rationing of care in nursing is nurses' inability to complete all care activities for patients because of scarcity in time and resource. Literature suggests that rationing of care is closely related to patient safety and quality of care. The phenomena have been defined and studied from varied perspectives and contexts. A systematic review of studies related to the concept was aimed at identifying and synthesizing the finding. METHODS: The review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guidelines, and literature searches were conducted in MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Web of Science and EMBASE databases. Fifty-seven quantitative studies were included in the review. FINDINGS: The review observed that nursing activities addressing the emotional, educational, mobility and hygiene needs of the patients were commonly rationed. Antecedents of rationing included resource inadequacy and organizational work environment. Rationing influenced patient satisfaction, mortality and a number of adverse events and was associated with decreased job satisfaction, increased intention to leave and high turnover among nurses. DISCUSSIONS: This review concludes that rationing in nursing is ubiquitous, embedded in the work environment and poses a threat to the professional health and philosophical base of nursing in addition to having serious implications on patients' safety. Strategies to reframe and reconsider organizational traits, and open discussion with other healthcare stakeholders can reduce rationing of nursing care. The review suggests future researchers adopt different methodological layout to study rationing.

The concept of holism is threaded throughout nursing. Holistic nursing practice has emerged as a prevalent concept in the provision of quality nursing care, calling nurses to focus on the whole person. Holistic self-care has been said to prevent burn-out, decrease compassion fatigue, and promote workplace civility. However, strategies for teaching holism in nursing education are lacking. The Integrative Student Growth Model (ISGM) offers an innovative, systems-based model for nurse educators to teach abstract values integral to professional nursing practice such as caring, holism, inclusiveness, integrity and excellence. This article discusses one aspect of the Integrative Student Growth Model, holism, which can be integrated at three defined levels present in all nursing programs. The authors propose a conceptual definition of holistic nursing education and suggest strategies for creating a holistic academic environment at each of the three levels. Finally, recommendations for future inquiry are explored as a means to test the model and the potential impact on student learning outcomes, and subsequently, patient outcomes.

AIM: This study aimed to culturally adapt and evaluate the reliability and validity of the Holistic Nursing Competence Scale for application in the Turkish context. BACKGROUND: Nurses are expected to assess well-being of individuals by considering physical, social, psychological, cultural and spiritual dimensions to enhance adaptation to diseases. In Turkey, no tools have been developed to date for the evaluation of competencies in holistic nursing in the country. METHODS: The study was conducted with 288 nurses working in two hospitals in Ankara equipped with over 500 beds. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed in order to identify whether the items and the sub-dimensions of the adapted scale complied with the original structure comprising 36 items and five sub-scales, namely 'general aptitude', 'staff education and management', 'ethically oriented practice', 'nursing care in a team' and 'professional development'. Cronbach's alpha value was used as an estimate for reliability analysis. RESULTS: Opinions of 11 experts were obtained for content validation of the scale, and the content validity index was 0.90. The adaptation was observed to be acceptable on the basis of structural equation model fit indices in confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach's alpha value was estimated to be 0.97 and 0.90, respectively, for the complete scale. CONCLUSION: The study identified the Turkish version of Holistic Nursing Competence Scale as a valid and reliable tool for the evaluation of competence in holistic nursing among nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND NURSING POLICY: The instrument may now be utilized as a tool of measurement in nursing practice, as well as in education and research, for identifying the level of competence in the holistic nursing practices among the nurses in Turkey.

RESUMO

Pressure ulcer/injury remains a significant health problem in the community, requiring comprehensive care. Nurses are involved in the management and prevention of pressure injury. However, to date, studies focusing on applying nursing theory to pressure ulcer care have been limited. In the present study, the three dimensions of Lydia Hall's 1964 theory-core, care and cure-are extensively discussed and linked with the practice of pressure injury management. It is hoped that this review will help community nurses understand the application of this nursing theory to the prevention and management of pressure injury.

Much has been written about the inclusion of holistic nursing values and practices in undergraduate nursing education, but their inclusion and influence in advanced practice nursing education has not been fully explored. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are nurses, so it is assumed that the nursing perspective provides a framework for NP education and practice, and that NP education represents the blending of a holistic nursing approach with medical diagnosis and treatment. Nurse practitioners are taking increasing responsibility for filling the gap in primary healthcare availability in the U.S., and in the current political and economic healthcare climate, NPs are in a position to promote primary care models that honor comprehensive, patient-centered, and relationship-based care. As a result, it becomes essential to quantify the inclusion of these values in NP educational programs and coursework, as instilling core values for practice begins in educational environments. This quantitative, descriptive study explored the inclusion of holistic nursing values by NP faculty, using the Nurse Practitioner Holistic Caring Instrument (NPHCI). The NPHCI exhibited quite high reliability and validity in the sample, including confirmation of its three subscales. Survey results suggest that NP faculty actively incorporate holistic nursing values in educational coursework, and that age, length of time teaching in NP programs, highest educational degree, and academics as the primary area of practice were important indicators of the inclusion of holistic nursing values in NP program curricula. Findings add to knowledge of NP education, but further study is warranted.

Objective: To investigate the effect of holistic nursing on the rehabilitation of patients with occupational pneumoconiosis complicated with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) . Methods: In October 2018, from September 2016 to September 2018, 120 pneumoconiosis patients with copd admitted to the occupational disease department of Laigang Hospital attached to Affilated to Shandong First Medical University were selected, according to random number table method is divided into experimental group (60 cases) and control group (60 cases) in the control group given conventional nursing, the experimental group to implement the holistic nursing, before and after the intervention were compared of two groups of patients with disease recognition grade self-management behavior of related parameters of blood gas analysis and lung function changes. Results: Comparison of disease recognition score between the two groups, the experimental group was higher than the control group (P<0.05) . Comparison of scores of self-management behaviors such as diseases medical management, daily life management. Emotion management and so on between the two groups showed that the experimental group was higher than the control group (P<0.05) . Comparison of blood gas analysis indicators between the two groups showed that PaO(2) in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group (P<0.05) . Comparison of pulmonary function indicators between the two groups showed that FEV(1) and FEV(1)/FVC in the experimental group were higher than that in the control group (P<0.05) . Conclusion: Holistic nursing can effectively improve the cognition of pneumoconiosis patients with copd in the acute exacerbation stage, regulate their self-management behavior, improve arterial oxygen content, improve pulmonary ventilation function. and promote the recovery of the disease.

RESUMO

Body-mind-spirit integrated psychotherapy reflects the core value of nursing by emphasizing the inseparable concept of body, mind, and spirit and caring for the holistic needs of the patient. Body-mind-spirit integrated psychotherapy was developed based on Western psychotherapy (positive psychology and forgiveness therapy), traditional Chinese medicine, and the Eastern philosophies of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The present paper describes the holistic concepts that underpin this therapeutic approach. Physical health is sustained through proper nutrition, physical relaxation, and harmonized breathing; psychological well-being helps maintain inner peace and harmony in interpersonal relationships; and spiritual well-being helps develop an optimistic and meaningful life. We report on several cases in which body-mind-spirit integrated psychotherapy was applied to the care of clients with depressive disorders and of breast cancer survivors and their partners as well as the related efficacy of this intervention in these cases. Finally, we discuss the potential for culturally-enriched psychotherapy to help clients transform illness suffering into life-growth experiences.

PURPOSE: Even though holistic care has been widely discussed in the health care and professional nursing literature, there is no comprehensive definition of it. Therefore, the aim of this article is to present a concept analysis of holistic care which was developed using the hybrid model. METHODS: The hybrid model comprises three phases. In the theoretical phase, characteristics of holistic care were identified through a review of the literature from CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, OVID, and Google Scholar databases. During the fieldwork phase, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight nurses who were purposely selected. Finally, following an analysis of the literature and the qualitative interviews, a theoretical description of the concept of holistic care was extracted. RESULTS: Two main themes were extracted of analytical phase: "Holistic care for offering a comprehensive model for caring" and "holistic care for improving patients' and nurses' conditions." CONCLUSION: By undertaking a conceptual analysis of holistic care, its meaning can be clarified which will encourage nursing educators to include holistic care in nursing syllabi, and consequently facilitate its provision in practice.
