BACKGROUND: Increased emphasis on workplace-based learning within pharmacy curricula has led to a focus on the quality of preceptors and the provision of preceptor training, with a diverse range of training programs for preceptors being developed across the globe. To ensure that preceptors are trained appropriately and deemed to be competent in their role, it is essential that all training programs are suitably evaluated. This research aimed to evaluate an online preceptor training program at a regional Australian University. METHODS: Kirkpatrick's four level model for assessment of training was used to evaluate this program. A multi method approach included a preceptor post training survey and interviews and a student survey evaluating the preceptor. Preceptor survey data were analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis, while inductive thematic analysis was used to analyse the interviews. Student evaluations of trained and untrained preceptors were compared to determine whether training had impacted on student-rated preceptor effectiveness. RESULTS: Twenty-eight preceptor post-training surveys were received, ten preceptor post-training interviews were conducted, and 35 student surveys were completed. The program was rated positively overall, with notable mention by preceptors of the interactive networking session. Following their first post-training student placement, preceptors found that their overall confidence levels had improved, particularly in relation to student management, evaluating students and providing feedback. Student evaluations of preceptors revealed improved ratings of trained versus untrained preceptors, especially as effective communicators. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that training had a positive impact on preceptor attitudes, behaviour and confidence levels. From the perspective of the student, training was also found to improve preceptor performance. These results highlight the beneficial effects of training for preceptors, to optimize the student placement experience and their preparation for future practice.

OBJECTIVE: The role of the Hospital Pharmacy Preceptor (HPP) is pivotal in upholding the excellence of experiential training and fostering the professional growth of pharmacy interns. However, there is a lack of studies that provide an overview of pharmacy internships from the perspective of HPP. This study explores the experience and expectations of HPPs regarding existing problems and possible coping strategies in intern teaching. METHODS: This is a qualitative study that was conducted through individual interviews and focus group discussions. HPPs were invited as participants from large-scale tertiary hospitals in representative provinces of mainland China. Interview and focus group discussion data were analyzed using thematic analysis to see emerging themes from the data. Nvivo 12 was utilized for data management and processing. RESULTS: Eight individual interviews and two focus group discussions were conducted, involving 14 HPPs as participants. Upon the examination of the interviews and focus group data, four themes were summarized regarding HPPs' perceptions: 1) current presenting problems; 2) possible coping strategies; 3) something HPPs should do; 4) something interns should do. CONCLUSION: This study found that from the HPPs' perspective, the hospital-based pharmacy internship still has some problems from policy to practice, which need to be addressed by the joint efforts of the state, schools, internship bases, pharmacy preceptors, and students.

BACKGROUND: Education is an important part of the work of most doctors. Clinical preceptors act as role models and supervisors. Preceptors' quality of supervision strongly influences the learning quality of clinical interns (Bartlett et al. BMC Med Educ 20:165, 2020). To ensure a consistent approach to every preceptorship experience, the competency of clinical preceptors should be assessed to ensure that the desired outcomes are achieved. This study aims to evaluate clinical preceptors' competency in learner-centered teaching, to provide constructive feedback to develop the preceptors' competency and improve supervisory skills and internship quality at Kunming Medical University (KMU) in Kunming of China. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative self-administered online questionnaire. The convenience sampling technique was employed. In the undergraduate internship stage of KMU, clinical preceptors (N = 340) and interns (N = 487) were invited to use the augmented Stanford Faculty Development Program questionnaire (SFDPQ) (Stalmeijer et al. Med Teach 30:e272-e277, 2008), to (self-) assess the preceptor's competency of learner-centered teaching on a five-point scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree). RESULTS: Two hundred twenty-eight preceptors and two hundred thirty-six interns completed the questionnaire correctly. Overall, the assessment was positive, but the preceptors' self-assessment significantly higher than the interns' (p < 0.00). The overall mean of each category of preceptors' self-assessment was greater than 4.5, with no difference based on educational qualification. Male preceptors scored significantly higher in two categories than female preceptors. Preceptors under 30 years of age with less than 5 years of teaching experience rated "Teacher's knowledge and attitude" lower than those over 40 years of age with more than 5 years of experience (p < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences in the four categories across disciplines (p < 0.05). Undergraduate interns rated "Teachers' knowledge" as the highest category and "Learning climate" as the lowest, and interns of different genders are evaluated without distinction in all categories of SFDPQ. CONCLUSIONS: Employing the augmented SFDPQ to evaluate learner-centered teaching competency of clinical preceptors, offers potentially useful information for delivering constructive feedback. Combining self-evaluations with learner evaluation data can contribute to exploring preceptor competency development framework to guide them in targeted learner-centered teaching skill and acquisition and improvement, finally improving the overall quality of internships.

BACKGROUND: Preceptorship has been found to be effective in supporting Newly Qualified Nurses (NQNs) during their transition into challenging environments, particularly in addressing issues related to confidence and anxiety. Effective preceptorship is an element of best practice and essential to support NQNs' transition into the critical care setting. However, the impact of preceptorship on NQNs and their preceptors in critical care units is yet to be completely understood. AIM: To review the impact of preceptorship on NQNs and preceptors working in a critical care environment. STUDY DESIGN: An integrative literature review of the literature. The review employed Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) five-stage integrative review approach. METHODS: Three databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO) were searched for papers published between January 2010 and May 2022. The PRISMA framework was used to guide the search and screening. Thematic analysis was used to extract, organize and analyse the data. RESULTS: Nine studies were included in this review. Reflective thematic analysis revealed three themes, with four related subthemes. Preceptorship has an impact on the development of the NQNs and preceptors' 'nurturing' relationship. NQNs develop their knowledge, competence and confidence when experiencing supportive preceptorship. Meanwhile, preceptors experience a combination of increased workload and opportunities for learning and professional development as a result of preceptorship. CONCLUSION: There is evidence of the impact of preceptorship on learning and professional development for both NQNs and preceptors, but this is a complex phenomenon and further research is required to understand this area more fully. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: In nursing practice, it is well-established that Newly Qualified Nurses (NQNs) often face heightened levels of anxiety and a lack of confidence when embarking on their careers, particularly in the demanding and stressful environment of critical care units. This review holds particular significance in the realm of clinical practice as it delves into the pivotal role of preceptorship in nurturing the professional growth and development of NQNs within the challenging domain of critical care. Effective preceptorship, as an essential component of best practice, plays a pivotal role in aiding NQNs' transition into critical care settings.

INTRODUCTION: The Northern Ontario School of Medicine University seeks to address rural physician shortages in Northern Ontario. One key strategy the school employs is the use of experiential learning placements embedded throughout its undergraduate curriculum. In second year, students embark on two 4-week placements in rural and remote communities. This study sought to explore the factors that contribute to a positive learning experience from the preceptor's perspective. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five community preceptors who have participated in these placements. Using the information from these interviews a survey was created and sent to another 15 preceptors. Data were analyzed using qualitative methods and frequencies. RESULTS: Three key themes were identified from both the interviews and survey data: the role of early rural and remote placements; the risks of these placements; and the need for a reciprocal relationship between institutions, preceptors, and students to create a positive learning environment. CONCLUSION: Preceptors value the opportunity to teach students, but the aims of these placements are not clear and preceptors and local hospitals need more workforce resources to make these experiences positive.

Clinical reasoning teaching strategies could be important models to teach healthcare trainees. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of clinical reasoning teaching strategies (one-minute preceptor (OMP) and SNAPPS) for developing clinical reasoning skills, attitudes and satisfaction of medical/healthcare students and post-graduate trainees as compared to controls. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled studies, with no restriction on language or publication date, were carried out by searching the PubMed, SCOPUS, ERIC, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library databases. The risk of bias of the studies selected was determined using Cochrane's risk-of-bias tool (RoB 2) and the quality of evidence used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. Of the 1066 articles retrieved, 12 were included in the systematic review and 10 in the meta-analysis. The results showed a growing body of literature on the use of strategies for teaching clinical reasoning that consisted predominantly of low-quality quasi-experimental studies. When only randomised controlled trials were included, analyses showed effectiveness among both healthcare students and post-graduate trainees for a series of outcomes, including total presentation length, duration of discussion, number of basic attributes, number of justified diagnoses in differential diagnoses and number of uncertainties expressed. Lastly, results for SNAPPS were better than for OMP relative to the control group. The strategies for teaching clinical reasoning improved the performance of healthcare students and professionals on this skill, promoting deeper discussion of clinical cases and a higher number of differential diagnoses. Further good-quality trials are needed to corroborate these findings. PROSPERO Registration: CRD42020175992.

BACKGROUND: Psychological safety and accountability are frameworks to describe relationships in the workplace. Psychological safety is a shared belief by members of a team that it is safe to take interpersonal risks. Accountability refers to being challenged and expected to meet expectations and goals. Psychological safety and accountability are supported by relational trust. Relational continuity is the educational construct underpinning longitudinal integrated clerkships. The workplace constructs of psychological safety and accountability may offer lenses to understand students' educational experiences in longitudinal integrated clerkships. METHODS: We performed a qualitative study of 9 years of longitudinal integrated clerkship graduates from two regionally diverse programs-at Harvard Medical School and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. We used deductive content analysis to characterize psychological safety and accountability from semi-structured interviews of longitudinal integrated clerkship graduates. RESULTS: Analysis of 20 graduates' interview transcripts reached saturation. We identified 109 discrete excerpts describing psychological safety, accountability, or both. Excerpts with high psychological safety described trusting relationships and safe learning spaces. Low psychological safety included fear and frustration and perceptions of stressful learning environments. Excerpts characterizing high accountability involved increased learning and responsibility toward patients. Low accountability included students not feeling challenged. Graduates' descriptions with both high psychological safety and high accountability characterized optimized learning and performance. CONCLUSIONS: This study used the workplace-based frameworks of psychological safety and accountability to explore qualitatively longitudinal integrated clerkship graduates' experiences as students. Graduates described high and low psychological safety and accountability. Graduates' descriptions of high psychological safety and accountability involved positive learning experiences and responsibility toward patients. The relational lenses of psychological safety and accountability may inform faculty development and future educational research in clinical medical education.

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of an online program on nurse preceptors' knowledge and self-efficacy in their roles to support students' clinical education, and to examine their online experience. BACKGROUND: Professional development of nurse preceptors is paramount to fostering work readiness of future graduate nurses on entering the workforce. The support from academic institutions in developing preceptors' roles in clinical teaching and assessment is pivotal. DESIGN: This study employed a mixed-methods design. METHOD: A total of 59 nurse preceptors from six healthcare institutions participated in an online preceptor program by collaborating with academic educators in facilitating student clinical learning and assessment through telesimulation following web-based instruction. Pre-test and post-tests were administered to evaluate the preceptors' knowledge and self-efficacy in their roles. Survey questionnaires and focus group discussions were conducted to evaluate their online experience. SQUIRE 2.0 guidelines were applied. RESULTS: The preceptors demonstrated significant improvements (p < .001) in knowledge and levels of self-efficacy in their preceptor roles immediately and 1 month after the program. The following four themes emerged from their learning experiences: 'interactive learning approach', 'academic-practice collaboration', 'better understanding of clinical assessment tool' and 'application of teaching strategies'. The preceptors reported positively on their motivation to learn using the web-based instruction and on their telesimulation experience. CONCLUSION: The study findings demonstrated effectiveness and feasibility of an online preceptor program to enhance preceptors' roles in supporting nursing students' transition to clinical practice, using a mix of web-based technologies to provide preceptors with self-directed and experiential learning approaches. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study contributed to the development of an innovative online preceptor program that provided opportunity for academic-clinical collaboration and has broad applicability. The telesimulation created robust remote simulation experiences for preceptors, allowing them to collaborate with academic educators in facilitating students' clinical practice amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Institute of Medicine recently expressed a need to measure the impact of interprofessional education (IPE) on health professions collaborative behavior in practice environments and patient outcomes, and the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education has focused research efforts to connect interprofessional practice and education. We describe a model intentionally designed to link interprofessional practice experience in ambulatory care setting and an IPE curriculum for students, called the Interprofessional Learning in Practice (ILIP) model. The study objective was to determine the impact of the ILIP model on student and patient outcomes during a 24-month intervention period. Student satisfaction was collected through a brief survey administered post-ILIP model. Patient outcomes were collected from before and after the intervention period through a retrospective chart review of patients who received care through the ILIP model. For the study, disease indicators for the top three chronic diagnoses of depression, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus were chosen as the patient outcomes. Student outcomes were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test. Patient outcomes were analyzed using McNemar's test and paired t-tests. Of the 382 students who participated in the ILIP model during the study period, 179 completed surveys, indicating that they valued the experience, valued learning from interprofessional preceptors, and gained interprofessional skills to use in their future practice. During the 24-month intervention, 401 patients were evaluated post-ILIP model, statistically significant results demonstrated HbA1c values for patients with diabetes were reduced by 0.5% and depression screening improved from 9% to 91%. Additionally, patients' hypertension control was similar to baseline and diabetes control (as defined as HbA1c ≤8%) was improved compared to baseline but did not reach statistical significance. By aligning interprofessional practice and education in the ILIP model, students had a positive experience, gained interprofessional collaboration skills, and provided value-added benefits to improve patient outcomes.

RESUMO

The need for neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) preceptors has never been greater. Precepting is a professional responsibility with both rewards and challenges. The recent pandemic has brought about new challenges, not the least of which is burnout from clinical, learner, and environmental demands. A new educational model from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the National Task Force outlines educational and preceptor requirements aimed at improving the advanced practice educational experience for students and preceptors. Available research provides evidence of what preceptors value and how to develop best practices with academic institutions to advocate for their students. This article will discuss new nursing educational models and the role of the NNP preceptor and analyze current best practices in preceptor recruitment and retention while discussing national trends impacting personal and professional NNP practices.

Ambulance service organizations worldwide report about an expanding professional role, responsibilities and scope of practice for ambulance clinicians, resulting in discussions concerning educational design and desired professional competencies. To face the contemporary demands in ambulance care, non-technical skills are advocated and clinical practice considered fundamental for the development of these abilities. However, there is very little research concerning educational strategies for supporting the desired competencies for novice registered nurses in the ambulance service. AIM: To describe and explore nurse preceptors' experience-based strategies for supporting registered nurses learning in the ambulance service. DESIGN: The study had an inductive and data-driven approach, guided by phenomenological epistemology. METHODS: Twenty-seven Swedish nurse preceptors were interviewed in three focus groups and four dyadic interviews between October 2019 and April 2020. The data were analysed with reflexive thematic analysis. FINDINGS: The nurse preceptors use several learning strategies, focusing on a socialization process and a clinical competence process, intertwined during clinical practice to support the development of a situated professional identity and a clinical decision-making competence. Supportive structures facilitate a progressive learning strategy when addressing desired skills and cognitive abilities in teamwork processes and clinical judgement. CONCLUSION: Supporting novice clinicians, prior to and during clinical practice in the ambulance service, should include medical assessment skills, situation awareness and processes for effective teamwork. Further, novice clinicians need to develop complex cognitive abilities to deal with the dynamic nature of decision-making in ambulance care. IMPACT: The study findings show contextual strategies, previously not described and desired competencies when supporting learning for registered nurses in the ambulance service. A theoretical grounding in episteme, techne, phronesis and situation awareness may guide educators at universities, managers in the ambulance service, preceptors and novice clinicians worldwide in the planning and performance of teaching and learning in the ambulance service.

AIMS: To identify distinct orientation competence profiles amongst nurse preceptors and explain the associated factors. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study design. METHODS: The data were collected during the winter of 2020-2021 from registered nurses (N = 8279, n = 844) at one university hospital in Finland through an online questionnaire that included a self-administered electronic version of the Preceptors' Orientation Competence Instrument. K-means clustering was then used to identify nurse preceptor profiles. Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyse factors associated with competence profiles. The results were reported as frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation. RESULTS: A total of three distinct orientation competence profiles (A, B, C) were identified. Profile A nurses evaluated their orientation competence at the highest level, whereas profile C nurses evaluated their competence at the lowest level. Sufficient clinical and theoretical experience, a motivation to work, willingness to orient new employees and participation in orientation and/or mentoring education were found to be associated with competence profiles. CONCLUSION: The findings expand the current knowledge base of nurse preceptors' orientation competence. Health care organizations should recognize different orientation competence profiles amongst the nursing staff since the selection of a preceptor should always be based on possessing the necessary orientation competence rather than availability. The results indicate that preceptors (who reported taking on various tasks and covering multiple roles) need support from co-workers to sufficiently concentrate on employee orientation tasks. The results also indicate that preceptors need further orientation education, which should-for example-outline the learning goals for new employees and how preceptors can assess employee performance. IMPACT: What problem did the study address? Prior research has not applied a robust theoretical framework covering all aspects relevant to a preceptor's competence. What were the main findings? A nurse's clinical and theoretical experience, motivation to work, willingness to orient new employees, and prior participation in orientation and/or student mentoring education were found to influence their level of orientation competence. Where and on whom will the research have an impact? Healthcare organizations can use the results of this study to make the selection of preceptors competency-based rather than their availability. Nurse leaders can use the results of this study to pinpoint which areas of nurses' orientation competence and associated factors need to be improved. Increased orientation competence will enable clinical nurses to provide high-quality orientation to new employees, which is crucial to the retention of nursing staff and the quality of patient care.

BACKGROUND: Nurse preceptorship is a new concept emerging in the Iranian health care system. The purpose of this research was to assess preceptor nurses' perceived benefits, rewards, support, and commitment to the role in a new nurse preceptorship program in Iran and to examine the relationships between these concepts. METHODS: A descriptive correlational study was employed, and using total population sampling method, 45 preceptor nurses were recruited from a tertiary referral teaching hospital in Iran. Data were collected using the Preceptor's Perception of Benefits and Rewards Scale, the Preceptor's Perception of Support Scale, and the Commitment to the Preceptor Role Scale. Descriptive statistics and correlational analysis were used to analyse data. RESULTS: Preceptors' commitment to their role was positively and moderately associated with their perceived benefits and rewards (r = 0.503, p = 0.001) and perceived support (r = 0.430, p = 0.003). None of the examined demographic and practice variables showed statistically significant association with commitment to the preceptor role. CONCLUSIONS: Commitment to the preceptor role was associated with benefits, rewards and support that preceptor nurses perceive in relation to their role. To optimise the effectiveness of nurse preceptorship programs, benefits, rewards, recognition, and support should be integral to planning of these programs.

BACKGROUND: Smooth reciprocal relationships enable a preceptee's growth, and it has been suggested that without such relationships, the preceptee may not be able to grow successfully. This study explored the differences in perceptions by matching the perspectives of both the preceptees who did not make progress in workplace adjustment and their preceptors. Identifying the differences in perceptions between the two groups is important for improving nursing education and the relationship between preceptees and preceptors. METHODS: A pair of nurses who had been with the company for less than 3 years and who had previously been transferred or had resigned due to poor workplace adjustment were designated as preceptees, and those who had directly supervised the preceptee during their first year of employment were included as preceptors in the study. A 50-minute semi-structured interview was conducted separately to examine the perceptions of the preceptee and preceptor. A thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data. RESULTS: This study explored the differences in perceptions regarding the clinical practice of nursing between preceptors and their preceptees who did not make progress in workplace adjustment during nursing education; six themes were identified. After interviewing both sides, it became clear that the same event was interpreted differently depending on their positions, perspectives, and contexts. As the preceptees were nurses who had left or had been transferred, the existence of these differences in perceptions suggests that these factors may impact their departure or transfer. However, we do not aim to place blame on one side or the other for the preceptee's turnover or transfer and would like to consider effective support, not only for the preceptee, but also for the preceptor. CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to examine nursing education on the premise that differences may occur depending on the position and role of nurses in the workplace and to look at curricular framework changes to bring in a systemic influence towards the training of young nurses.

BACKGROUND: 'The Practice Educators' Academy Programme' is an innovative educational intervention developed following a preceptor-focussed needs assessment. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the programme's effect on self-efficacy and knowledge amongst multi-disciplinary clinical preceptors who precept students across the Health Cluster in Qatar University. The secondary aim was to assess the preceptors' satisfaction with the programme's comprehensiveness, appropriateness, and relevance. METHODS: This is a longitudinal study, with the same participants followed at different time points (i.e., pretest-posttest interventional design). The sample size was calculated to represent 10% of the sample expected for the main study, utilising a stratified convenience sampling technique. Preceptor self-efficacy was assessed using the Preceptor Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, a validated 21-item questionnaire. Preceptor knowledge was assessed through a 25-item multiple-choice question test. Satisfaction with programme content and delivery was assessed through a 14-item questionnaire with open comments. RESULTS: Thirty pretest-posttest respondents for the PSEQ assessment, and 26 pretest-posttest respondents for the knowledge assessment were appropriately matched and analysed. Participation in the self-efficacy questionnaire resulted in a statistically significant increase in their posttest median score (pretest-to-posttest: 3.3-to-3.6, p = 0.001). Participation in the knowledge assessment resulted in a statistically significant increased posttest mean score (pretest-to-posttest: 10.2-to-15.7, p < 0.001). Participants indicated high levels of satisfaction with the programme (average score = 4.42/5). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest the programme is effective as demonstrated through a significant improvement in preceptors' self-efficacy and knowledge. Recommendations for future iterations include placing greater focus on active learning strategies, and inter-disciplinary interactions.

BACKGROUND: New graduate nurses (NGN) are the future of healthcare organizations where a shortage of nurses will soon be reality. The transition from a student to a registered nurse can be a demanding and challenging time, and in order to retain new graduate nurses, the transition should be as smooth as possible. AIM: The aim of this study was to examine preceptors' education intervention's impact on NGNs' orientation period and their clinical learning environment from NGNs' point of view. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This survey was a part of a longitudinal quasi-experimental intervention study. Participating units were randomized into intervention group and control group. The intervention group's preceptors (n=174)were provided a face-to-face education about orientation. RESULTS: NGNs (n=72) were relatively satisfied with the received orientation. However, intervention group was more discontented with their orientation experiences than the control group. The control group's NGNs had longer orientation periods and more feedback discussions. They were also more satisfied with their preceptor's orientation skills and their working environment was more responsive. DISCUSSION: Even though the impact of the intervention was inconclusive, this study provided us important information about NGNs' first steps towards the nursing profession by giving us clear improvement targets. We need a culture of feedback, individualized orientation and understanding that orientation should be our common interest. Investing in orientation is investing for the future. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that the increase in knowledge did not translate into everyday practice. This finding will hopefully give rise to discussion within organizations on how to utilize employees' gained knowledge more effectively.

Nurse preceptors are key stakeholders in providing quality clinical education. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of nurse preceptors on a web-based clinical pedagogy program and clinical teaching. A descriptive qualitative design was adopted. The program was made accessible to the nurse preceptors who were assigned nursing students from July 2019 to June 2020. Upon completion of clinical teaching, a total of 19 nurse preceptors participated in four focus group discussions. The discussions were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim, and thematic analysis was conducted. Five themes, with 11 subthemes, emerged: (i) Undergoing the process of self-awareness and development; (ii) Mastering newly acquired skills to refine own teaching approach; (iii) Implementing consistent evaluation and constructive feedback; (iv) Dual roles and responsibilities of preceptor; and (v) Benefits and barriers of the program. This study highlighted the knowledge and skills preceptors gained through the program which gave them newfound confidence and facilitated their clinical teaching and evaluation. As the shift towards online learning progresses, web-based learning can be a useful platform for professional development of nurse preceptors.

The experience that student veterinary nurses (SVNs) have in the clinical learning environment can be greatly influenced by the clinical coach (CC); the supervisory relationship will affect student retention and clinical competency. To support a positive student experience, the training and development of CCs must be critically reviewed and regularly updated. This research aimed to ascertain the current CC training undertaken and the preparedness of CCs for their role in training SVNs. We used a prospective cross-sectional study design. An online survey was distributed over 4 weeks to CCs across the United Kingdom representing a range of educational institutions, and it generated 80 responses. Prior to undertaking their initial CC training, CCs had been qualified practitioners for a median of 2.2 years (IQR = 4.16y). CCs stated they needed more course content during their training regarding student teaching and pastoral support, more support from associated institutions, and there was a call for a longer training period leading to a formal qualification. Providing CC training with broader course content and some level of evaluation should be considered to develop and assess the non-clinical skills that are vital to the role.

School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) often serve vulnerable populations who have been exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) which have been tied to an increase in adult health risk factors. At an urban SBHC serving adolescent students, 75% of patients reported three or more ACEs. This SBHC also had multiple practitioner students. A multicomponent onboarding was created to implement the Patient Interaction Standard of Care, addressing the SBHC model, adolescent care, and ACEs. Practitioner students that completed the onboarding demonstrated 97% adherence to the Patient Interaction Standard of Care "Always" or "Most of the Time." By onboarding frequent practitioner students, care provided to this vulnerable patient population was more consistently aligned to evidenced-based care appropriate for the SBHC model, adolescent care, and ACEs. This demonstrates the importance of mandatory onboarding completion compliance and further implementation across other SBCHs.

OBJECTIVE: Residency positions are highly competitive. Pharmacy students who are familiar with the ideal qualities of residency candidates and the expectations of residency programs may be more likely to obtain one of these coveted positions. This study identifies the characteristics that residency program directors (RPDs) and preceptors use to define an ideal residency candidate. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study that surveyed pharmacy RPDs and preceptors across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaires are comprised of two sections: demographic information and characteristics of the residency candidates. Over a five-month period (May 1, 2020 - September 30, 2020), the survey was sent electronically to the participants. RESULTS: Of the 78 surveys returned, 68 surveys were included (RPDs: 36, Preceptors: 32) and 12 surveys (15.17%) were excluded due to incompleteness. Number of RPDs responded to the survey represents (65%) of the total RPDs in Saudi Arabia. The mean response scores from the results of the Likert scale [strongly agree (1) - strongly disagree (5)] - suggest that a candidate's performance during the interview (mean score = 1.5), their professional appearance (1.5), an alignment between a candidate's interests and the program focus (1.6), and previous hospital experience (1.8) mattered most. While being from the same region (3.4), having an advanced degree (2.8) and the cumulative Grade Point Average (2.7) mattered the least. We find that previous hospital experience (29%), familiarity with the program (16%), research experience (15%), Saudi Commission for Health Specialists aggregate score (10%), and letters of recommendation (4%) are considered the top five factors. CONCLUSION: Residency candidates should focus on training in clinical settings. Offering mock interviews and Saudi Pharmacist Licensure Examination practice tests and involving pharmacy students in clinical research may increase their chance in securing a residency position.
