RESUMO

Bacteria invasion is the main factor hindering the wound-healing process. However, current antibacterial therapies inevitably face complex challenges, such as the abuse of antibiotics or severe inflammation during treatment. Here, a drug-free bioclay enzyme (Bio-Clayzyme) consisting of Fe2+-tannic acid (TA) network-coated kaolinite nanoclay and glucose oxidase (GOx) was reported to destroy harmful bacteria via bimetal antibacterial therapy. At the wound site, Bio-Clayzyme was found to enhance the generation of toxic hydroxyl radicals for sterilization via cascade catalysis of GOx and Fe2+-mediated peroxidase mimetic activity. Specifically, the acidic characteristics of the infection microenvironment accelerated the release of Al3+ from kaolinite, which further led to bacterial membrane damage and amplified the antibacterial toxicity of Fe2+. Besides, Bio-Clayzyme also performed hemostasis and anti-inflammatory functions inherited from Kaol and TA. By the combination of hemostasis and anti-inflammatory and bimetal synergistic sterilization, Bio-Clayzyme achieves efficient healing of infected wounds, providing a revolutionary approach for infectious wound regeneration.

Low level expression in Escherichia coli of the RecA protein from the radiation resistant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans protects a RecA deficient strain of E. coli from UV-A irradiation by up to ∼160% over basal UV-A resistance. The protection effect is inverse protein dose dependent: increasing the expression level of the D. radiodurans RecA (DrRecA) protein decreases the protection factor. This inverse protein dose dependence effect helps resolve previously conflicting reports of whether DrRecA expression is protective or toxic for E. coli. In contrast to the D. radiodurans protein effect, conspecific plasmid expression of E. coli RecA protein in RecA deficient E. coli is consistently protective over several protein expression levels, as well as consistently more protective to higher levels of UV-A exposure than that provided by the D. radiodurans protein. The results indicate that plasmid expression of D. radiodurans RecA can modestly enhance the UV resistance of living E. coli, but that the heterospecific protein shifts from protective to toxic as expression is increased.

Traditional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based micro/nanomotors (MOFtors) can achieve three-dimensional (3D) motion mainly depending on noble metal (e.g., Pt), toxic fuels (e.g., hydrogen peroxide), and surfactants, or under external magnetic fields. In this study, light-driven MOFtors are constructed based on PCN-224(H) and regulated their photothermal and photochemical properties responding to the light of different wavelengths through porphyrin metalation. The resulting PCN-224(Fe) MOFtors presented a strong 3D motion at a maximum speed of 1234.9 ± 367.5 µm s-1 under visible light due to the various gradient fields by the photothermal and photochemical effects. Such MOFtors exhibit excellent water sterilization performance. Under optimal conditions, the PCN-224(Cu) MOFtors presented the best antibacterial performance of 99.4%, which improved by 23.4% compared to its static counterpart and 43.7% compared to static PCN-224(H). The underlying mechanism demonstrates that metal doping could increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and result in a more positive surface charge under light, which are short-distance effective sterilizing ingredients. Furthermore, the motion of MOFtors appears very important to extend the short-distance effective sterilization and thus synergistically improve the antibacterial performance. This work provides a new idea for preparing and developing light-driven MOFtors with multi-responsive properties.

The indiscriminate use of petroleum-based polymers and plastics for single-use food packaging has led to serious environmental problems due the non-biodegradable characteristics. Thus, much attention has been focused on the research of new biobased and biodegradable materials. Yeast and fungal biomass are low-cost and abundant sources of biopolymers with highly promising properties for the development of biodegradable materials. This study aimed to select a preparation method to develop new biodegradable films using the whole biomass of Paecilomyces variotii subjected to successive physical treatments including ultrasonic homogenization (US) and heat treatment. Sterilization process had an important impact on the final filmogenic dispersion and mechanical properties of the films. Longer US treatments produced a reduction in the particle size and the application of an intermediate UT treatment contributed favorably to the breaking of agglomerates allowing the second US treatment to be more effective, achieving an ordered network with a more uniform distribution. Samples that were not filtrated after the sterilization process presented mechanical properties similar to plasticized materials. On the other hand, the filtration process after sterilization eliminated soluble and hydratable compounds, which produced a reduction in the hydration of the films.

Efficient metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) photocatalytic bactericidal catalysts are urgently needed in water purification. Herein, a Fe-MOF (MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5) with promoted electron transport was achieved by vanadium (V) ions doping and V/Fe ratio optimization, showing excellent photocatalytic bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli under visible light irradiation (99.92%). The efficient antibacterial mechanism, V as a Ti-like mediator boosting electronic transmission in MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5), was revealed by its band structure, transient photocurrent, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scavenger quenching experiments. The enhancement of photocatalytic bactericidal performance of Fe-MOFs by V-ion-doping was confirmed by two other Fe-MOFs, MIL-53-NH2(V1Fe5) and MIL-101-NH2(V1Fe5), with the same metal ions and ligands, both of which have higher performance than the corresponding undoped MOFs. Among them, MIL-88B-NH2(V1Fe5) exhibits the highest photocatalytic bactericidal activity due to its suitable metal clusters ([M(µ3-O)] cluster) and topological structure (three-dimensional rhomboid network structure). This work demonstrated the amplification effect of V ion doping on electron transport in Fe-MOFs photocatalysts. .

Bovine mastitis (BM) is mainly caused by bacterial infection that has a highly impact on dairy production, affecting both economic viability and animal well-being. A cross-sectional study was conducted in dairy farms to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of bacterial pathogens associated with BM. The analysis revealed that Staphylococcus (49%), Escherichia (16%), Pseudomonas (11%), and Klebsiella (6%) were the primary bacterial pathogens associated with mastitis. A significant proportion of Staphylococcus strains displayed multiple drug resistance. The use of disinfectants is an important conventional measure to control the pathogenic bacteria in the environment. Bacteriophages (Phages), possessing antibacterial properties, are natural green and effective disinfectants. Moreover, they mitigate the risk of generating harmful disinfection byproducts, which are commonly associated with traditional disinfection methods. Based on the primary bacterial pathogens associated with mastitis in the investigation area, a phage cocktail, named SPBC-SJ, containing seven phages capable of lysing S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa was formulated. SPBC-SJ exhibited superior bactericidal activity and catharsis effect on pollutants (glass surface) compared to chemical disinfectants. Clinical trials confirmed that the SPBC-SJ-based superimposed disinfection group (phage combined with chemical disinfectants) not only cut down the dosage of disinfectants used, but significantly reduced total bacterial counts on the ground and in the feeding trough of dairy farms. Furthermore, SPBC-SJ significantly reduced the abundance of Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas in the environment of the dairy farm. These findings suggest that phage-based superimposed disinfection is a promising alternative method to combat mastitis pathogens in dairy farms due to its highly efficient and environmentally-friendly properties.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to examine donkey sperm quality after intratesticular injection of hypertonic mannitol (HM) and saline (HS). METHODS: Randomly assigned to five treatment groups were 15 adult male donkeys: (1) Control group (no treatment), (2) Surgery group (surgical castration for testosterone control), (3) NS group (normal saline intratesticular injection), (4) HS group (hypertonic saline), and (5) HM group. We injected 20 mL per testicle. We took 5 mL blood from all donkeys before injection. Castration was performed under general anesthesia 60 days later. Samples included blood and testicular tissue. Total motility (TM), progressive motility (PM), movementy features, DNA damage, morphology, viability, and plasma membrane functionality were evaluated. Hormone analyses, histomorphometric studies and oxidative stress indices including total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and NADP+/NADPH were evaluated. Apoptosis, pyroptosis-related Bax, Caspase-1, GSDMD, and Bcl-2 expression were also assessed. RESULTS: In HS and HM groups, testosterone, epididymal sperm count, motility, viability, and plasma membrane functionality dropped while sperm DNA damage increased. HS and HM groups had significantly lower histomorphometric parameters, TAC, GPx, SOD, GSH, and Bcl-2 gene expression. MDA, NADP+/NADPH, Bax, Caspase-1, and GSDMD gene expression were substantially higher in the HS and HM groups than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Toxic effects of hypertonic saline and mannitol on reproductive parameters were seen following, hence, they might be considered as a good chemical sterilizing treatment in donkeys.

Nitric oxide (NO) release from S-nitrosothiol-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles imbedded in the diffusion limiting layer of a glucose sensor has been demonstrated as an effective strategy for mitigating the foreign body response common to sensor implantation, resulting in improved analytical performance. With respect to potential clinical translation of this approach, the effects of sterilization on NO-releasing biosensors require careful evaluation, as NO donor chemistry is sensitive to temperature and environment. Herein, we evaluated the influence of multiple sterilization methods on 1) sterilization success; 2) NO payload; and 3) sensor performance to establish the commercialization potential of NO-releasing glucose sensors. Sensors were treated with ethylene oxide gas, the most common sterilization method for intricate medical devices, which led to undesirable (i.e., premature) release of NO. To reduce NO loss, alternative sterilization methods that were studied included exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light and immersion in 70% ethanol (EtOH). Sterilization cycle times required to reach a 10-6 sterility assurance level were determined for both UV light and 70% EtOH against Gram-negative and -positive bacteria. The longest sterilization cycle times (258 s and 628 s for 70% EtOH and UV light, respectively) resulted in a negligible impact on benchtop sensor performance. However, sterilization with 70% ethanol resulted in a reduced NO-release duration. Ultraviolet light exposure for ~10 min proved successful at eliminating bacteria without compromising NO payloads or durations and presents as the most promising method for sterilization of these sensors. In addition, storage of NO-releasing sensor membranes at -20 and -80°C resulted in preservation of NO release for 6 and 12 months, respectively.

INTRODUCTION: Since malignancy during pregnancy is uncommon, information regarding contraception selection or sterilization at delivery is limited. The objective of this study was to examine the type of long-acting reversible contraception or surgical sterilization procedure chosen by pregnant patients with malignancy at delivery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study queried the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project's National Inpatient Sample in the USA. The study population was vaginal and cesarean deliveries in a hospital setting from January 2017 to December 2020. Pregnant patients with breast cancer (n = 1605), leukemia (n = 1190), lymphoma (n = 1120), thyroid cancer (n = 715), cervical cancer (n = 425) and melanoma (n = 400) were compared with 14 265 319 pregnant patients without malignancy. The main outcome measures were utilization of long-acting reversible contraception (subdermal implant or intrauterine device) and performance of permanent surgical sterilization (bilateral tubal ligation or bilateral salpingectomy) during the index hospital admission for delivery, assessed with a multinomial regression model controlling for clinical, pregnancy and delivery characteristics. RESULTS: When compared with pregnant patients without malignancy, pregnant patients with breast cancer were more likely to proceed with bilateral salpingectomy (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.30) or intrauterine device (aOR 1.91); none received the subdermal implant. Pregnant patients with leukemia were more likely to choose a subdermal implant (aOR 2.22), whereas those with lymphoma were more likely to proceed with bilateral salpingectomy (aOR 1.93) and bilateral tubal ligation (aOR 1.76). Pregnant patients with thyroid cancer were more likely to proceed with bilateral tubal ligation (aOR 2.21) and none received the subdermal implant. No patients in the cervical cancer group selected long-acting reversible contraception, and they were more likely to proceed with bilateral salpingectomy (aOR 2.08). None in the melanoma group chose long-acting reversible contraception. Among pregnant patients aged <30, the odds of proceeding with bilateral salpingectomy were increased in patients with breast cancer (aOR 3.01), cervical cancer (aOR 2.26) or lymphoma (aOR 2.08). The odds of proceeding with bilateral tubal ligation in pregnant patients aged <30 with melanoma (aOR 5.36) was also increased. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this nationwide assessment in the United States suggest that among pregnant patients with malignancy, the preferred contraceptive option or method of sterilization at time of hospital delivery differs by malignancy type.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sterilization on the retention forces of lithium disilicate (LD) and polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) crowns bonded to titanium base (Ti-base) abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty LD and 40 PICN crowns were milled and then bonded to 80 Ti-bases with two resin composite cements: Multilink Hybrid Abutment (mh) and Panavia V5 (pv) for a total of 8 groups (n = 10). Half of the specimens (test) underwent an autoclaving protocol (pressure 1.1 bar, 121°C, 20.5 min) and the other half not (control). Restorations were screw-retained to implants, and retention forces (N) were measured with a pull-off testing machine. The surfaces of the Ti-bases and the crowns were inspected for the analysis of the integrity of the marginal bonding interface and failure mode. Student's t-test, chi-square test, and univariate linear regression model were performed to analyze the data (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The mean pull-off retention forces ranged from 487.7 ± 73.4 N to 742.2 ± 150.3 N. Sterilized groups showed statistically significant overall higher maximum retention forces (p < .05), except for one combination (LD + mh). Sterilization led to an increased presence of marginal gaps and deformities compared to no-sterilization (p < .001), while no statistically significant relationship was found between failure mode and sterilization (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Sterilization may have a beneficial effect on the retention forces of LD and PICN crowns bonded to titanium base abutments, although it may negatively influence the integrity of the marginal bonding interface.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are pivotal for gonadal development and reproductive success. Though artificial induction of sterility by targeting PGCs are gaining popularity due to its advantages in fish surrogacy and biodiversity management, it is often skill and time intensive. In this study, we have focused on understanding the role of PGCs and the chemotactic SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling on gonad development of Japanese anchovy (JA, Engraulis japonicus), an upcoming marine model organism with eco-commercial values, with an aim to develop a novel, easy, and versatile gonad sterilization method. Our data showed that PGC migration related genes, i.e., sdf-1a, sdf-1b, cxcr4a, cxcr4b and vasa, are phylogenetically closer relatives of respective herring (Clupea harengus) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) homolog. Subsequently, PGC marking and live tracing experiments confirmed that PGC migration in JA initiates from 16 hours post fertilization (hpf) followed by PGC settlement in the gonadal ridge at 44 hpf. We found that overexpression of zebrafish sdf-1a mRNA in the germ cell suppresses cxcr4a and increases cxcr4b transcription at 8 hpf, dose dependently disrupts PGC migration at 24-48 hpf, induces PGC death and upregulates sdf-1b at 5 days post hatching. 48 h of immersion treatment with CXCR4 antagonist (AMD3100, Abcam) also accelerated PGC mismigration and pushed the PGC away from gonadal ridge in a dose responsive manner, and further when grown to adulthood caused germ cell less gonad formation in some individuals. Cumulatively, our data, for the first time, suggests that JA PGC migration is largely regulated by SDF1/CXCR4 signaling, and modulation of this signaling has strong potential for sterile, germ cell less gonad preparation at a mass scale. However, further in-depth analysis is pertinent to apply this methodology in marine fish species to successfully catapult Japanese anchovy into a true marine fish model.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of regret among Canadians undergoing tubal ligation or bilateral salpingectomy for contraception in the context of widely available, highly effective, and tolerable reversible contraceptive methods including long-acting reversible contraceptives. METHODS: We performed an online cross-sectional survey of regret following tubal sterilization using Qualtrics software. A convenience sample was used to recruit Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 60 years who had undergone tubal ligation or salpingectomy for contraception. The online survey was advertised on 3 social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. RESULTS: We obtained survey results for 844 Canadian residents. Regret was reported by 15.9% of respondents. Consistent with existing literature, factors associated with regret included younger age at the time of the procedure, a change in relationship status, and having the procedure performed at the time of a pregnancy. Surprisingly, 9.5% of respondents reported an element of coercion, 4.5% were unaware the procedure was considered permanent contraception, and 33.3% did not recall their provider discussing alternative forms of contraception with them prior to surgery. CONCLUSION: We found that the prevalence of regret following tubal sterilization has not changed with the widespread availability of highly effective reversible contraceptive methods. However, most patients choosing permanent contraception will be satisfied with their decision. Shared decision-making should respect the autonomy of each patient to make their own decisions regarding the most acceptable family planning method for their circumstances.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the association between insurance type and permanent contraception fulfillment among those with cesarean deliveries. Additionally, we sought to examine modification by the scheduled status of the cesarean. STUDY DESIGN: We used data from a multi-site cohort study of patients who delivered in 2018-2019 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Illinois, MetroHealth Medical System in Ohio, or University of Alabama at Birmingham in Alabama. All patients had permanent contraception as their contraceptive plan in their medical chart during delivery hospitalization. We used logistic regression to model the association between insurance type, scheduled status of cesarean and permanent contraception fulfillment by hospital discharge. The scheduled status of cesarean delivery was examined as an effect modifier. RESULTS: Compared to patients with private insurance, those with Medicaid were less likely to have their desired permanent contraception procedure fulfilled by hospital discharge (89.3% vs. 96.8%, p < 0.001). After adjusting for covariates, patients with Medicaid had a lower odds of permanent contraception fulfillment by hospital discharge (OR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.21, 0.77). This association was stronger among those who had unscheduled cesarean deliveries (OR: 0.29; 95% CI: 0.12, 0.74) than those with scheduled cesarean deliveries (OR: 0.77; 95% CI: 0.32, 1.88). CONCLUSIONS FOR PRACTICE: Compared to patients with private insurance undergoing a cesarean delivery, those with Medicaid insurance were less likely to have their desired permanent contraception fulfilled. Physicians and hospitals must examine their practices surrounding Medicaid forms to ensure that patients have valid consent forms available at the time of delivery.

The second-hand clothing imports are very popular in the least developed countries (LDCs). The social health risk (SHR) associated with second-hand clothing products and the lack of relevant legislations in LDCs, however, bring substantial challenges. This article is therefore developed to explore the sterilization legislation design for second-hand clothing supply chains in LDCs. To address LDCs' different import requirements of fumigation, both the extended exporter responsibility (EER) legislation scheme and the extended importer responsibility (EIR) legislation scheme are considered. We also examine whether the perception of public-sector corruption in LDCs may affect the performance of sterilization legislation schemes. We compare the performance of sterilization legislation schemes under different public-sector corruption cases, different sterilization legislation structures, as well as market competition. Interestingly, our analyses show that the EER and EIR legislation schemes can achieve the same performance under a per unit SHR duty, no matter whether there is public-sector corruption or not. However, these two legislation schemes perform differently under the lump-sum SHR duty. Besides, with the presence of the public-sector corruption perception, the prospect of financial benefits from bribing the regulatory agency can induce the firm to choose a higher optimal sterilization level when the bribe is sufficiently small. These implications complement the extant knowledge on risk management of second-hand clothing in LDCs, and provide an important guidance regarding the design of sterilization legislations on second-hand clothing imports.

Marine fungi represent a huge untapped resource of natural products. The bio-activity of a new asperbutenolide A from marine fungus Aspergillus terreus was not well known. In the present study, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and RNA-Sequencing were used to analyze the bio-activity and sterilization mechanism of asperbutenolide A against clinical pathogenic microbes. The results showed that the MICs of asperbutenolide A against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were 4.0-8.0 µg/mL. The asperbutenolide A present poor bio-activity against with candida. The sterilization mechanism of asperbutenolide A against MRSA showed that there were 1426 differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) between the groups of MRSA treated with asperbutenolide A and negative control. Gene Ontology (GO) classification analysis indicated that the DEGs were mainly involved in cellular process, metabolic process, cellular anatomical entity, binding, catalytic activity, etc. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) classification analysis showed that these DEGs were mainly enriched in amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, etc. Moreover, qRT-PCR showed similar trends in the expressions of argF, ureA, glmS and opuCA with the RNA-Sequencing. These results indicated that asperbutenolide A was with ideal bio-activity against with MRSA and could be as a new antibacterial agent.

In view of a large number of people infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) with great harm followed, there is an urgent need to develop a non-invasive, easy-to-operate, and rapid detection method, and to identify effective sterilization strategies. In this study, highly specific nanoprobes with nanozyme activity, Ag@Pt nanoparticles (NPs) with the antibody, were utilized as a novel lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). The optical label (Ag@Pt NPs) was enhanced by the introduction of the chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and compared with a gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) optical label. Under the optimal condition, Ag@Pt-LFIA and TMB-enhanced Ag@Pt-LFIA for H. pylori were successfully established, two of which were over twofold and 100-fold more sensitive than conventional visual Au NP-based LFIA, respectively. Furthermore, Ag@Pt NPs with the antibody irradiated with NIR laser (808 nm) at a power intensity of 550 mW/cm2 for 5 min exhibited a remarkable antibacterial effect. The nanoprobes could close to bacteria through effective interactions between antibodies and bacteria, thereby benefiting photothermal sterilization. Overall, Ag@Pt NPs provide promising applications in pathogen detection and therapeutic applications.

Vibrio species represent the predominant and significant pathogen in global marine fish and shellfish aquaculture. Vibrio species are ubiquitously presented in Artemia cyst hatcheries, and their notable colonization in live prey, particularly Artemia nauplii, leads to the transmission of these pathogens into the digestive system of larval organisms, causing serious problems in Vibriosis in marine aquaculture. To eliminate the Vibriospecies in Artemia nauplii, trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) was used for sterilization of the nauplii. In this study, 3 different concentrations, including 0.5 ppm (FA group), 1.0 ppm (FB group) and 1.5 ppm (FC group) of TCCA were used to treat nauplii for 25 min, and then genomic DNA of the different groups were extracted followed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (NGS). Bioinformatics analysis was applied and the results indicated that Proteobacter constituted the predominant component within each group at the phylum level, albeit accounting for only 58.68% in the FB group, which was significantly lower than in other groups (>86%). The relative abundance of Vibrio species at genus level showed that when compared with the control group, the FB group (15.8%) was reduced by 25.5%. Beta diversity showed differences between the FB group and the other groups, suggesting that treatment with 1.0ppm TCCA for 25 min would obviously reduce the Vibrio in Artemia nauplii. In conclusion, the Vibrio species were significantly reduced after treatment with TCCA, indicating that TCCA might be an alternative to antibiotics used for live food sterilization in marine aquaculture.

Calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2), which can be stably stored in powder form for a long period, is widely used as a disinfectant in various fields. A new sterilization process was developed in the present study, where a microalgal medium was sterilized using 0.02% Ca(ClO)2, followed by complete neutralization of the Ca(ClO)2 within 8 h through catalytic reaction of an MnCl2-Na2EDTA complex and a synergistic effect of glucose. When comparing the growth of Chlorella vulgaris in the autoclaved medium, a 2.65 times greater maximum cell growth was observed in cells grown in the medium prepared by treatment of Ca(ClO)2. This result indicates that denaturation of the medium by heat can hinder the growth of some microorganisms. In the case of cultivation of Euglena gracilis, successful culture growth was achieved without growth inhibition or contamination on a medium prepared in the same manner.

BACKGROUND: One important factor for the prevention of surgical site infections is ultraclean air in the operating room (OR). Still, the direct sterilization potential of most technologies, especially in a dynamic clinical setting, is not well understood. We aimed to determine and compare the microbial presence from the inlet and outlet flow of a filtration unit with crystalline ultraviolet-C (C-UVC) light. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted at a single institution, where primary total joint arthroplasty and spine surgeries were performed. The OR was fitted with a positive ventilation system. In addition, a filtration unit with a C-UVC sterilizing light was placed in the OR. The inlet and outlet air flows were swabbed simultaneously and compared. Swabs were processed for culture and next-generation sequencing. RESULTS: The mean length of the surgical procedures sampled was 68 ± 13 minutes. Overall, 19 out of 200 (9.5%) swabs isolated microorganisms. Inlet air swabs were positive at a higher rate (16 versus 3%; P < .01) compared to the outlet air swabs. A wide variety of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria were isolated, but fungi were only recovered from inlet air swabs. The detection of microorganisms was also higher when more door openings were performed (32.5 ± 7.1 versus 27.9 ± 5.6; P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Air swabs mainly isolated microorganisms from the inlet flow to the filtration unit with a C-UVC light. The sterilizing unit counteracted factors affecting the air quality in the OR, namely door openings, surgical personnel, and tissue combustion.

High-energy radiation is known to potentially impact the optical performance of silicon-based sensors adversely. Nevertheless, a proper characterization and quantification of possible spectral response degradation effects due to UV stress is technically challenging. On one hand, typical illumination methods via UV lamps provide a poorly defined energy spectrum. On the other hand, a standardized measurement methodology is also missing. This work provides an approach where well-defined energy spectrum UV stress conditions are guaranteed via a customized optical set up, including a laser driven light source, a monochromator, and a non-solarizing optical fiber. The test methodology proposed here allows performing a controlled UV stress between 200 nm and 400 nm with well-defined energy conditions and offers a quantitative overview of the impact on the optical performance in CMOS-based photodiodes, along a wavelength range from 200 to 1100 nm and 1 nm step. This is of great importance for the characterization and development of new sensors with a high and stable UV spectral response, as well as for implementation of practical applications such as UV light sensing and UV-based sterilization.
