BACKGROUND: Green rooibos (Aspalathus linearis (Burm.f.) R.Dahlgren) herbal tea is popular due to its health-promoting properties. Information on its characteristic sensory profile is scarce and sensory tools to define product variation are needed. The storage conditions and time during its shelf-life are hypothesized to affect the product quality. RESULTS: Production batches from two producers spanning 5 years (n = 57) were analyzed using descriptive sensory analysis. Primary attributes (>30 median intensity; 100% occurrence frequency) included 'hay/dried grass', 'cooked oats', 'tobacco', 'honey' and 'caramel' aromas, and astringent mouthfeel. 'Cooked vegetables', 'green grass', 'stewed fruit', 'rooibos-woody', 'marmalade' and 'cardboard' aromas, sweet taste and bitter taste were secondary attributes (10-20 median intensity; 100% occurrence frequency). The same flavor attributes were present, except for sweet-associated and fruity notes. A sensory lexicon and sensory wheels for aroma and palate attributes were constructed from the data. The shelf-life stability of green rooibos was evaluated in moisture-impermeable (pouches) and moisture-permeable (sachets) packaging at 25 and 40 °C at 60% relative humidity over 24 weeks. Green rooibos samples stored in pouches at 4 °C were also evaluated. Storage in sachets led to moisture uptake (~10 g (100 g)-1 dry basis) and an increase in water activity (>0.6), causing degradation of chlorophyll and dihydrochalcones. Changes in color and sensory profile (decreased vegetal, cereal and cardboard aromas and increased sweet-associated and fruity aromas) were evident and more pronounced at the higher storage temperature. CONCLUSIONS: Storage at ≤25 °C in moisture-impermeable packaging material is recommended for green rooibos herbal tea. © 2024 The Authors. Background: Functional food is a key element in the prevention and treatment of many diseases. The ingredients it contains, such as phytosterols that lower cholesterol, also have a preventive effect on type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis and heart attack. Phenolic compounds have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Xylo-oligosaccharides control insulin levels, and fibre lowers blood pressure, potentially reducing insulin resistance. These beneficial properties mean that there is an increasing interest in this kind of food. Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the state of knowledge and behaviour regarding functional food among adults and to answer the question whether there are differences between the state of knowledge and behaviour of women and men. Material and methods: The survey was conducted among 301 people, including 181 women and 120 men. The research tool was an original survey questionnaire. Results: The definition of functional food is known to 42.5% of people (47.5% of women and 35% of men), while the definition of prebiotic is known to 41.9% of people (43.1% of women and 40.0% of men). For 56.2% of respondents, the factor encouraging the consumption of functional food was a healthy lifestyle, and for 54.7% of them, the product composition was the main purchase criterion. Among functional products, cereals or muesli were most often consumed for breakfast by 35% of men and 55.8% of women, 42.5% of men and 33.7% of women were eaten oils for lunch. For dinner they most often consumed fruit teas, herbal teas, herbal mixtures, this answer was given by 25.8% of men and 29.8% of women. Conclusions: Knowledge of functional foods is unsatisfactory, and no differences in the knowledge of women and men have been observed. Consumption of functional food is generally low, and no differences in consumption have been observed between women and men.

BACKGROUND: Many patients might be tempted to use nonpharmacological home remedies (NPHRs) to relieve upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) symptoms. However, primary care physicians (PCPs) rarely recommend NPHRs due to a lack of knowledge in this field. We conducted a questionnaire-based survey among primary care patients in Switzerland and France to explore which NPHRs they use and consider effective for 3 common URTI symptoms: sore throat/cough/common cold. METHODS: Using official physician registries, we randomly selected 50 PCPs in Geneva (Switzerland) and Lyon/Grenoble (France). Seven research assistants were involved in the recruitment of consecutive patients from the waiting rooms of these PCPs (20-25 patients per practice). Patients were asked to complete a paper-based questionnaire to assess the use and perceived effectiveness of 72 NPHRs for URTI symptoms. The list of NPHRs was developed by our research team with the help of 97 patients. Remedies were considered effective if patients reported that they were effective/very effective. Data were analysed descriptively. RESULTS: Of the 1,198 eligible patients, 1,012 agreed to participate (84.5%). The 4 most frequently used NPHRs were honey/lemon/thyme/herbal teas. Most patients using these NPHRs considered them as effective (between 77% of patients for onion syrup for cough and 94% of patients for thyme inhalations for common colds). CONCLUSIONS: Many patients reported using honey/lemon/thyme/herbal teas for URTI symptoms, and generally considered these treatments to be effective. Future research should explore the extent to which these remedies can be safely proposed as alternatives for the symptomatic treatment of ear/nose/throat complaints in primary care.

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted medical and socioeconomic havoc, and despite the current availability of vaccines and broad implementation of vaccination programs, more easily accessible and cost-effective acute treatment options preventing morbidity and mortality are urgently needed. Herbal teas have historically and recurrently been applied as self-medication for prophylaxis, therapy, and symptom alleviation in diverse diseases, including those caused by respiratory viruses, and have provided sources of natural products as basis for the development of therapeutic agents. To identify affordable, ubiquitously available, and effective treatments, we tested herbs consumed worldwide as herbal teas regarding their antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS: Aqueous infusions prepared by boiling leaves of the Lamiaceae perilla and sage elicit potent and sustained antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 when applied after infection as well as prior to infection of cells. The herbal infusions exerted in vitro antiviral effects comparable to interferon-ß and remdesivir but outperformed convalescent sera and interferon-α2 upon short-term treatment early after infection. Based on protein fractionation analyses, we identified caffeic acid, perilla aldehyde, and perillyl alcohol as antiviral compounds. Global mass spectrometry (MS) analyses performed comparatively in two different cell culture infection models revealed changes of the proteome upon treatment with herbal infusions and provided insights into the mode of action. As inferred by the MS data, induction of heme oxygenase 1 (HMOX-1) was confirmed as effector mechanism by the antiviral activity of the HMOX-1-inducing compounds sulforaphane and fraxetin. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, herbal teas based on perilla and sage exhibit antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 including variants of concern such as Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron, and we identified HMOX-1 as potential therapeutic target. Given that perilla and sage have been suggested as treatment options for various diseases, our dataset may constitute a valuable resource also for future research beyond virology.

BACKGROUND: The shelf-life of a functional herbal tea-based beverage is important not only for consumer acceptability, but also for the retention of bioactive compounds. The present study aimed to clarify the role of common iced tea beverage ingredients (citric and ascorbic acids) on the shelf-life stability of an herbal tea-based beverage. A hot water extract of green Cyclopia subternata, also used as honeybush tea, was selected as the main ingredient because it provides different types of phenolic compounds associated with bioactive properties (i.e. xanthones, benzophenones, flavanones, flavones and dihydrochalcones). RESULTS: The model solutions were stored for 180 and 90 days at 25 and 40 °C, respectively. Changes in their volatile profiles and color were also quantified as they contribute to product quality. 3',5'-Di-ß-d-glucopyranosyl-3-hydroxyphloretin (HPDG; dihydrochalcone) and, to a lesser extent, mangiferin (xanthone), were the most labile compounds. Both compounds were thus identified as critical quality indicators to determine shelf-life. The stability-enhancing activity of the acids depended on the compound; ascorbic acid and citric acid enhanced the stability of HPDG and mangiferin, respectively. However, when considering all the major phenolic compounds, the base solution without acids was the most stable. This was also observed for the color and major volatile aroma-active compounds [α-terpineol, (E)-ß-damascenone, 1-p-menthen-9-al and trans-ocimenol]. CONCLUSION: The addition of acids, added for stability and taste in ready-to-drink iced tea beverages, could thus have unwanted consequences in that they could accelerate compositional changes and shorten the shelf-life of polyphenol-rich herbal tea beverages. © 2023 The Authors. Indian camphorweed (Pluchea indica (L.) Less.) is used as herbal tea due to the presence of volatile aromatic oils and several phytochemical compounds. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of copper (Cu) contamination on the physiology and morphology of P. indica, and the health risks associated with its consumption as tea. The cuttings of P. indica were subjected to 0 mM (control), 5 mM (low Cu), and 20 mM (excess Cu) of CuSO4 treatments for 1, 2, and 4 weeks. Thereafter, Cu contamination as well as physiological and morphological parameters were assessed. Cu accumulation was higher in the root tissues of plants (25.8 folds higher as compared to the leaves) grown under 20 mM CuSO4 for 4 weeks. This increased Cu accumulation resulted in the inhibition of root length, root fresh weight, and root dry weight. Cu concentration was found maximum (1.36 µg g-1 DW) in the leaf tissues under 20 mM Cu exposure for 4 weeks, with the highest target hazard quotient (THQ = 1.85), whereas Cu was not detected in control. Under exposure to 20 mM Cu treatment for 4 weeks, leaf greenness, maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, and photon yield of photosystem II diminished by 21.4%, 16.1%, and 22.4%, respectively, as compared to the control. Leaf temperature was increased by 2.5 °C, and the crop stress index (CSI) exceeded 0.6 when exposed to 20 mM Cu treatment for 2 and 4 weeks; however, the control had a CSI below 0.5. This led to a reduced transpiration rate and stomatal conductance. In addition, the net photosynthetic rate was also found sensitive to Cu treatment, which resulted in decreased shoot and root growth. Based on the key results, it can be suggested that P. indica herbal tea derived from the foliage of plants grown under a 5 mM Cu level (0.75 µg g-1 DW) with a target hazard quotient below one aligns with the recommended dietary intake of Cu in leafy vegetables. The study recommends choosing cuttings from plants with a small canopy as plant material in the greenhouse microclimates to validate the growth performance in the Cu-contaminated soil and simulate the natural shrub architecture and life cycle.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) is commonly consumed as an herbal tea for its antioxidant health benefits. Young seedlings known as microgreens are popular for their distinct flavors and can contain higher mineral content on a dry weight basis compared to their adult counterparts. However, the use of microgreens for herbal teas has not been previously investigated. In this study, lemon balm was grown to adult and microgreen harvest stages and prepared as herbal teas by brewing with boiled (100 °C) water for 5 minutes and room temperature water (22 °C) for 2 hours. The effects of harvest time and brewing method on the mineral content, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant capacity of lemon balm herbal teas were assessed. Results showed that adult lemon balm tea contained higher total phenolics, total flavonoids, rosmarinic acid, and antioxidant capacity than microgreen teas, with hot preparations containing the highest amounts (p ≤ 0.05). In contrast, microgreen lemon balm teas contained higher amounts of minerals (p ≤ 0.05), including calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, copper, and zinc. In general, brewing conditions did not impact the content of most minerals. Overall, the results support the potential of using dried microgreens as herbal teas. Microgreen lemon balm teas prepared hot and cold offer antioxidant compounds and are richer sources of minerals than adult teas. The ease of growth for microgreens offers consumers the opportunity for home preparation of a novel herbal tea beverage.

BACKGROUND: High consumption of Annona muricata fruit has been previously identified as a risk factor for atypical parkinsonism in the French Caribbean islands. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether consumption of Annonaceae products could worsen the clinical phenotype of patients with any form of degenerative parkinsonism. METHODS: We analyzed neurological data from 180 Caribbean parkinsonian patients and specifically looked for dose effects of lifelong, cumulative Annonaceae consumption on cognitive performance. Using unsupervised clustering, we identified one cluster with mild/moderate symptoms (N = 102) and one with severe symptoms including cognitive impairment (N = 78). RESULTS: We showed that even low cumulative consumption of fruits/juices (>0.2 fruit-years) or any consumption of herbal tea from Annonaceae worsen disease severity and cognitive deficits in degenerative parkinsonism including Parkinson's disease (OR fruits-juices: 3.76 [95% CI: 1.13-15.18]; OR herbal tea: 2.91 [95% CI: 1.34-6.56]). CONCLUSION: We suggest that more restrictive public health preventive recommendations should be made regarding the consumption of Annonaceae products. © 2022 The Authors. This paper reports on the major contributions and results of the 2nd International Workshop of Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids held in September 2020 in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are among the most relevant plant toxins contaminating food, feed, and medicinal products of plant origin. Hundreds of PA congeners with widespread occurrence are known, and thousands of plants are assumed to contain PAs. Due to certain PAs' pronounced liver toxicity and carcinogenicity, their occurrence in food, feed, and phytomedicines has raised serious human health concerns. This is particularly true for herbal teas, certain food supplements, honey, and certain phytomedicinal drugs. Due to the limited availability of animal data, broader use of in vitro data appears warranted to improve the risk assessment of a large number of relevant, 1,2-unsaturated PAs. This is true, for example, for the derivation of both toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic data. These efforts aim to understand better the modes of action, uptake, metabolism, elimination, toxicity, and genotoxicity of PAs to enable a detailed dose-response analysis and ultimately quantify differing toxic potencies between relevant PAs. Accordingly, risk-limiting measures comprising production, marketing, and regulation of food, feed, and medicinal products are discussed.

Evidence for the anti-diabetic actions of camellia and herbal tea in diabetic patients has not been summarized. Several data sources were searched for randomized trials assessing the effect of different teas on cardiometabolic risk factors in T2D subjects. Two independent reviewers extracted relevant data and assessed the risk of bias. Results were summarized using mean differences (MDs) based on a random model. Sixteen studies (19 trials, N = 832) fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Mean differences were measured for body weight, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, a homeostatic model for insulin resistance, high and low-density lipoproteins, triglycerides, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. No effects on total cholesterol and waist circumference were observed when either camellia or herbal tea was consumed. Tea produced moderate regulatory effects on adipose, glycemic control, lipid profiles, and blood pressure. In terms of efficacy, camellia and herbal teas yield different benefits in regulating metabolism. This discovery has some implications for clinical research and drug development. However, more high-quality trials are needed to improve the certainty of our estimates.

BACKGROUND: Understanding cultural perception of pain and determining the methods used for pain management contribute to the assessment of the pain experienced by nursing students. AIMS: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of culture on nursing students' perception of pain and the modern, cultural, and traditional methods they use for pain self-management. DESIGN: This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study. PARTICIPANTS/SUBJECTS: This study was carried out with 319 nursing students between March 1 and May 1, 2020. METHODS: For data collection, a questionnaire created by the researchers after literature review and the Pain Beliefs Scale were used. Data were evaluated using SPSS Statistics 20.0 program. RESULTS: The type of pain experienced most often by nursing students is headache (56.7%). The pain they experienced negatively affected daily activities. The mean score of those who used cultural method of psychologic beliefs for reducing pain was statistically significant (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Nursing students generally use massage, warm shower, and herbal tea drinking for pain management. The psychologic belief scores of those who applied these traditional methods of pain reduction were high.

In recent years, herbal tea consumption becomes popular because of the potential health benefits and attractive flavors. However, there is also a growing concern that herbal supplements contribute to the drug-drug/drug-herb interactions and hepatotoxicity. In this study, FL83B mouse hepatocytes were used as an in vitro mode of hepatotoxicity induced by free fatty acids, including palmitic acid (PA) and oleic acid (OA), ethanol, and acetaminophen. Herbal tea extracts were obtained from eight common herbal plants, including Verbena officinalis L., Hyssopus officinalis L., Salvia officinalis L., Urtica dioica L., Hemerocallis fulva (L.) L., Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr., Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck, and Ficus formosana Maxim. MTT assay was used to evaluate the impact of these herbal tea extracts on hepatoxocitity. We found that these herbal tea extracts per se did not exhibit hepatotoxicity, and had no effect on OA-induced hepatotoxicity. However, extracts from Verbena officinalis L., Hyssopus officinalis L., Salvia officinalis L., and Hemerocallis fulva (L.) L. exhibited protective effect against PA-induced hepatotoxicity. In addition, herbal tea extracts from Verbena officinalis L., Hyssopus officinalis L., Salvia officinalis L., Urtica dioica L., Hemerocallis fulva (L.) L., and Ficus formosana Maxim. exhibited protective effect against acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity. Interestingly, all these herbal tea extracts enhanced ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity. Our results suggest that herbal tea extracts have differential effects on different modes of hepatotoxicity.

Agropyron repens (L.) P. Beauv. (couch grass) is a world-wide infesting rhizomatous plant with pharmacological applications. Chemical research is focused on its allelopathic and anti-inflammatory components, which are mainly present in the essential oil. Conversely, the aqueous extracts have been sparingly investigated, although the herbal tea is by far the most used formulation. To fill the gap, the metabolic profile of Agropyron repens rhizome herbal tea was investigated by electrospray ionization (ESI) tandem-mass spectrometry (MS/MS); the phenolic profile was investigated by HPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS. ESI-MS fingerprinting was provided, evidencing diagnostic ions for saccharides, organic acids and amino acids. The HPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS analysis evidenced at least 20 characteristic phenolic compounds, the most representative being caffeoyl and feruloyl quinic esters, followed by coumaric, caffeic and ferulic acids, and hesperidin among flavonoids. In addition, the essential amino acid tryptophan was identified for the first time. The results suggest new perspectives of applications for Agropyron repens rhizome.

Background: This study comparatively assessed seven indigenous traditional tea plants on several attributes that included antioxidant, nutritional, caffeine contents, and cyclooxygenase activity. Methodology: Nutritional content of all tea plants were determined for energy, fat, carbohydrates, total sugars, dietary fiber and amino acids. Antioxidant potential and the antioxidant potentiating secondary metabolites were also measured and compared. Further, we investigated the tea plants for any role they would have on cyclooxygenase (COX) activity on cobalt chloride (CoCl2) induced human glioma cell lines (U87MG). Results: The tea plants were found non-cytotoxic at concentrations tested against the human Chang liver and HeK 293 kidney cells and were found to be naturally caffeine free. The lowest and highest extraction yield among the tea plants was 7.1% for B. saligna and 15.48% for L. scaberrimma respectively. On average, the flavonol content was 12 to 8 QE/g, ORAC 800 µmol TE/g, TEAC 150 µmol TE/g, FRAP 155 µmol AAE/g, polyphenols 40 mg GAE/g, flavanols 0.35 mg CE/g, flavonols 12 mg QE/g and total flavonoid content (TFC) 180 µg QE/mg. The COX activity has been found to be inhibited by a dose-dependent manner by L. scaberrimma, B. saligna and L. javanica. Conclusion: The results further support competitive value of tea plants and need for improved and further development.

The concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, and lead in infusion tea bags of Camellia sinensis (tea), Pimpinella anisum (anise), Matricaria recutita (chamomile), Peumus boldus (boldo), and Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) for four commercial brands sold in Tacna, Peru, to compare these concentrations with international standards. The moderate level of arsenic obtained for C. sinensis (0.294 mg kg-1) exceeded the Codex Alimentarius standard for three of the four analyzed brands, while the level of arsenic in P. boldus (0.220 mg kg-1) exceeded the same standard and the Mercado Común del Sur (MERCOSUR) parameters for only one brand. The moderate level of cadmium outlined in the Codex Alimentarius and by the World Health Organization (WHO) was exceeded by two infusion tea bag brands of M. recutita (0.210 mg kg-1) and one brand of C. citratus (0.134 mg kg-1). Finally, based on the MERCOSUR parameters, moderate levels of lead were exceeded by only one brand of C. citratus (0.535 mg kg-1). To evaluate possible health risks, we also calculated the hazard index (HI) of the heavy metals in the target herbal tea bags. The values obtained were less than 1, showing negligible noncarcinogenic health risks for consumers. Despite this information and because of the elevated concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, and lead obtained in some of our results, we suggest more detailed studies to obtain more information about the potential toxicity of these products to humans.

In the study, we examined in detail the effect of dehydrating using natural drying in the shade, convection drying, and microwave drying, which are the most widely used techniques, especially for tea and spices, both in practice and in theory, on the protein, and mineral composition of rosemary leaves. Also, we determined the color parameters, which are the reason for the selection because it creates the allure for spices. In microwave drying at 600 W, we obtained results close to fresh rosemary in all color parameters, especially brightness and greenness. Although natural drying, which does not have any energy and investment costs, is the second-best method in terms of color, 50 °C, which is the most common drying technique in the market, caused significant color losses affecting the commercial value of the product. We reached the closest protein and P, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, and contents to fresh products in dried ones at 600 W. In contrast, in K only, the highest measurement was at 200 W. Strikingly, we observed dramatic losses reducing the benefit obtained from the product regarding protein and almost all nutrients in both convective and natural drying techniques, the most common methods in practice.

Psoriasis (PS) is a multifactorial disease with a dominant role of genetic predisposition, but the questions of PS etiology and pathogenesis still remain open. The development of PS can be facilitated by environmental factors, as well as a violation of the skin barrier and immune imbalance. In the literature of recent years, an association in clinical practice between PS and atopic diseases (atopic dermatitis, bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis) has been increasingly reported. As a result of the increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases in the world, a special role is given to the study of nutrition, in particular food allergy in the development of PS. An elimination diet under food allergy is the main type of etiotropic therapy that prevents the launch of immunopathological inflammatory reactions. However, the literature does not provide data on the positive effect of the elimination effect in food allergy in patients with psoriasis. The purpose of this work was to present a clinical case of the effectiveness of the elimination diet for food allergy in a patient with PS. Methods. A specific allergological examination of a 65-year old patient with widespread PS (suffering from the age of 25) was carried out: determination of the concentration of total immunoglobulin E (IgE), eosinophilic cationic protein and allergen-specific IgE to food, pollen, fungal allergens in the blood serum by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, skin prick testing with food and pollen allergens. Taking into account the specific allergological examination, the patient was prescribed a diet with the elimination of causally significant allergens, including cross-reacting ones, for a period of 1-3 months (with the exception of chicken eggs, cereals, buckwheat, baker's yeast and products based on yeast fermentation, cereal products (bread, bakery, rolled oats, bran, oatmeal cookies, cereals, pasta); as well as peanuts, smoked sausages, coffee, cocoa, ice cream, sherbet, sesame, sorghum, honey and bee products, strawberries, wild strawberries, citrus, legumes, soybeans, sorrel, herbal teas, tree fruits (raw apples, peaches, cherries; nuts, exotic fruits), celery, raw carrots, tomatoes). Results. The demonstrated clinical case indicates that the appointment of an elimination diet in patients with PS with concomitant food allergies contributes to the rapid regression of the skin process. The increased concentration of total IgE in blood serum revealed during patient examination, the presence of positive reactions to food and pollen allergens according to the results of skin prick testing and the determination of allergen-specific IgE, the positive food elimination effect demonstrate the important role of allergic reactions in the development of skin lesions in PS. The presented observation demonstrates the importance of conducting a specific allergic examination in patients with PS, including an allergic history, determining the concentration of total and allergen-specific IgE, and eosinophilic cationic protein in blood serum, studying the spectrum of sensitization to food, pollen and fungal allergens by skin prick testing. Conclusion. Thus, as a result of the study, it was found that the appointment of an individual elimination diet, taking into account the results of a specific allergological examination, can contribute not only to the effective resolution of foci of psoriatic skin lesions, but also to the prevention of the progression of the systemic inflammatory process, reducing the risk of comorbid conditions and, therefore, improving the life quality of patients with psoriasis.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of Cystus® tea (Naturprodukte Dr. Pandalis GmbH & Co. KG) as mouthwash compared to sage tea on oral mucositis in patients undergoing radio(chemo)therapy for head and neck cancer. METHODS: In this randomized, prospective phase III study, 60 head and neck cancer patients with primary or postoperative radio(chemo)therapy were included between 04/2012 and 06/2014. They received either sage or Cystus® tea for daily mouthwash under therapy. Mucositis was scored twice a week following the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the European Organization for Research and Treatment Cancer (RTOG/EORTC) scoring system. Dental parameters were also recorded. Statistical evaluation of the primary endpoint was performed using t­test and log rank test. RESULTS: Data from 57 patients could be evaluated. Patient characteristics showed no significant difference between the two groups (n = 27 sage; n = 30 Cystus®). A total of 55 patients received the prescribed dose (60-66 Gy postoperative; 70-76.8 Gy primary). Mucositis grade 3 was observed in 23 patients (n = 11 sage; n = 12 Cystus®) and occurred between day 16 and 50 after start of therapy. There was no significant difference between the two groups in latency (p = 0.75) and frequency (p = 0.85) of the occurrence of mucositis grade 3. The self-assessment of the oral mucosa and the tolerability of the tea also showed no significant differences. Occurrence of dental pathologies appeared to increase over time after radiotherapy. CONCLUSION: Cystus® and sage tea have a similar effect on the occurrence of radiation-induced mucositis regarding latency and incidence. Cystus® tea mouthwash solution is tolerated well and can be applied in addition to intensive oral care and hygiene along with the application of fluorides.

As the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) increases, their side effects have also attracted attention. Ibuprofen is one of the most widely-used NSAIDs. In this study, we screened the highly-sensitive and specific antibody 6E10, with an IC50 of 1.92 ng mL-1, and a linear range of 0.53-6.97 ng mL-1. In this study, we developed a rapid lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (ICA) strip method to detect ibuprofen in water or herbal tea. The cut-off limit of the strip is 10 ng mL-1 in water, and concentrations as low as 1 ng mL-1 can be detected in herbal tea samples, with the results obtained by the naked eye within 6 min. All the data were confirmed by high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight-mass spectrometry (HPLC-QTOF-MS). This lateral-flow ICA strip is thus a rapid tool for on-site detection and screening of ibuprofen in water and herbal tea.

Tea (Camellia sinensis) and herbal tea have been recognized as rich sources of bioactive constituents with the ability to exert antioxidant actions. The aims of this study were to analyze phenolic, carotenoid and saccharide contents in a set of Vietnamese tea and herbal tea and compare the results with those of green and black teas marketed in the U.S. In total, 27 phenolics, six carotenoids and chlorophylls, and three saccharides were quantitatively identified. Catechins, quercetin glycosides and chlorogenic acid were the predominating phenolics in the teas, with the concentrations following the order: jasmine/green teas > oolong tea > black tea. Lutein was the dominant carotenoid in the teas and its concentrations were generally found to be higher in the jasmine and green teas than in the oolong and black teas. The study showed that the green teas originating in Vietnam had much higher levels of phenolics and carotenoids than their counterparts stemming from another country. The application of partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) as a chemometric tool was able to differentiate phenolic profiles between methanolic extracts and tea infusions. Through principal component analysis (PCA), the similarities and dissimilarities among the jasmine, green, oolong, black teas and herbal teas were depicted.
