RESUMO
Mercury (Hg) pollution has seriously threatened the crop productivity and food security. In the present research, experiments were conducted to assess the influence of nanoscale sulfur/sulfur nanoparticles and the corresponding bulk and ionic sulfur forms on the growth and Hg accumulation of oilseed rape seedlings grown on Hg-contaminated soil, as well as the transformation of soil Hg fractions. The results showed a significant reduction in fresh biomass for seedlings grown on 80-200 mg/kg Hg-polluted soil after 30 days. At 120 mg/kg Hg treatment, 100-300 mg/kg sulfur nanoparticles (SNPs) application counteracted Hg toxicity more effectively compared to the corresponding bulk sulfur particles (BSPs) and ionic sulfur (sulfate) treatments. The seedlings treated with 120 mg/kg Hg + 300 mg/kg SNPs gained 54.2 and 56.9% more shoot and root biomass, respectively, compared to those treated with Hg alone. Meanwhile, 300 mg/kg SNPs application decreased Hg accumulation by 18.9 and 76.5% in shoots and roots, respectively, relative to Hg alone treatment.SNPs treatment caused more Hg to be blocked in the soil and accumulating significantly less Hg in plants as compared to other S forms. The chemical fractions of Hg in the soil were subsequently investigated, and the solubility of Hg was significantly decreased by applying SNPs to the soil. Especially 200-300 mg/kg SNPs treatments caused the ratio of the soluble/exchangeable and the specifically absorbed fraction to be the lowest, accounting for 1.95-4.13% of the total Hg of soil. These findings suggest that adding SNPs to Hg-contaminated soils could be an effective measure for immobilizing soluble Hg and decreasing the Hg concentration in the edible parts of crops. The results of the current study hold promise for the practical application of SNPs to Hg-contaminated farmland for better yields and simultaneously increasing the food safety.
The novelty of this study is the selection of oilseed rape and nanoscale sulfur (NS) or sulfur nanoparticles (SNPs) as nontoxic nanomaterial to counteract the Hg toxicity and accumulation. Oilseed rape was selected due to its wide adaptability to various environmental conditions and the high-value oil for human consumption and biofuels production. These advantages make oilseed rape a highly valuable crop for various applications. NS was selected due to its reported ability to limit the uptake of heavy metals in oilseed rape, rice, and wheat along with other crops and subsequently restrict the toxicity of heavy metals in these plants and improve food safety. In this study, we evaluated the growth, Hg accumulation, and the resulting toxicity in oilseed rape grown on Hg-contaminated soil, with or without amendments with NS. The outcomes from this study provided evidence of the significant potential of NS in preventing Hg bioaccumulation and improving crop yields in oilseed rape. This provides opportunity to use NS as an ideal non-GMO approach to limit toxic metals in crops.

This study was designed to investigate the role of Morganella morganii strains in alleviating Cd stress in Arabidopsis seedlings under controlled conditions. Both M. morganii strains ABT3 (ON316873) and ABT9 (ON316874) strains isolated from salt-affected areas showed higher resistance against Cd and possess plant growth-promoting traits such as nitrogen fixation, indole-acetic acid production, ammonia production, phosphate solubilization, and, catalase, gelatinase and protease enzyme production. Plant inoculation assay showed that varying concentration of Cd (1.5 mM and 2.5 mM) significantly reduced Arabidopsis growth, quantum yield (56.70%-66.49%), and chlorophyll content (31.90%-42.70%). Cd toxicity also triggered different associations between lipid peroxidation (43.61%-69.77%) and enzymatic antioxidant mechanisms. However, when both strains were applied to the Arabidopsis seedlings, the shoot and root length and fresh and dry weights were improved in the control and Cd-stressed plants. Moreover, both strains enhanced the resistance against Cd stress by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities [catalase (19.47%-27.39%) and peroxidase (37.50%-48.07%)]that ultimately cause a substantial reduction in lipid peroxidation (27.71%-41.90%). Both strains particularly ABT3 also showed positive results in improving quantum yield (73.84%-98.64%) and chlorophyll content (41.13%-48.63%), thus increasing the growth of Arabidopsis seedlings. The study suggests that PGPR can protect plants from Cd toxicity, and Cd-tolerant rhizobacterial strains can remediate heavy metal polluted sites and improve plant growth.
In order to develop sustainable and effective agricultural techniques in areas polluted with heavy metals, it is important to have a deeper understanding of the characteristics of metal-resistant PGPR. Hence, this study focuses on the efficacy of M. morganii in promoting the growth and increasing the photosynthetic pigments of Arabidopsis seedlings under Cd toxicity.

To promote the selenium (Se) uptakes in fruit trees under Se-contaminated soil, the effects of water extract of Fagopyrum dibotrys (D. Don) Hara straw on the Se accumulation in peach seedlings under selenium-contaminated soil were studied. The results showed that the root biomass, chlorophyll content, activities of antioxidant enzymes, and soluble protein content of peach seedlings were increased by the F. dibotrys straw extract. The different forms of Se (total Se, inorganic Se, and organic Se) were also increased in peach seedlings following treatment with the F. dibotrys straw extract. The highest total shoot Se content was treated by the 300-fold dilution of F. dibotrys straw, which was 30.87% higher than the control. The F. dibotrys straw extract also increased the activities of adenosine triphosphate sulfurase (ATPS), and adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate reductase (APR) in peach seedlings, but decreased the activity of serine acetyltransferase (SAT). Additionally, correlation and grey relational analyses revealed that chlorophyll a content, APR activity, and root biomass were closely associated with the total shoot Se content. Overall, this study shows that the water extract of F. dibotrys straw can promote Se uptake in peach seedlings, and 300-fold dilution is the most suitable concentration.
The water extract of Fagopyrum dibotrys (D. Don) Hara straw promoted the selenium (Se) uptake in peach seedlings under selenium-contaminated soil. The concentration of F. dibotrys straw extract showed a quadratic polynomial regression relationship with the total root and shoot Se. Furthermore, chlorophyll a content, APR activity, and root biomass were closely associated with the total shoot Se. This study shows that water extract of F. dibotrys straw can promote Se uptake in peach seedlings, and 300-fold dilution is the most suitable concentration.

INTRODUCTION: Auxin estimation in plant tissues is a crucial component of auxin signaling studies. Despite the availability of various high-throughput auxin quantification methods like LC-MS, GC-MS, HPLC, biosensors, and DR5-gus/gfp-based assays, auxin quantification remains troublesome because these techniques are very expensive and technology intensive and they mostly involve elaborate sample preparation or require the development of transgenic plants. OBJECTIVES: To find a solution to these problems, we made use of an old auxin detection system to quantify microbe derived auxins and modified it to effectively measure auxin levels in rice plants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Auxins from different tissues of rice plants, including root samples of seedlings exposed to IAA/TIBA or subjected to different abiotic stresses, were extracted in ethanol. The total auxin level was measured by the presently described colorimetric assay and counterchecked by other auxin estimation methods like LC-MS or gus staining of DR5-gus overexpressing lines. RESULTS: The presented colorimetric method could measure (1) the auxin levels in different tissues of rice plants, thus identifying the regions of higher auxin abundance, (2) the differential accumulation of auxins in rice roots when auxin or its transport inhibitor was supplied exogenously, and (3) the levels of auxin in roots of rice seedlings subjected to various abiotic stresses. The thus obtained auxin levels correlated well with the auxin levels determined by other methods like LC-MS or gus staining and the expression pattern of auxin biosynthesis pathway genes. CONCLUSIONS: The auxin estimation method described here is simple, rapid, cost-effective, and sensitive and allows for the efficient detection of relative auxin abundances in plant tissues.

Hyperspectral imaging was used to predict the total polyphenol content in low-temperature stressed tomato seedlings for the development of a multispectral image sensor. The spectral data with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 5 nm were merged to obtain FWHMs of 10 nm, 25 nm, and 50 nm using a commercialized bandpass filter. Using the permutation importance method and regression coefficients, we developed the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) regression models by setting the band number to ≥11, ≤10, and ≤5 for each FWHM. The regression model using 56 bands with an FWHM of 5 nm resulted in an R2 of 0.71, an RMSE of 3.99 mg/g, and an RE of 9.04%, whereas the model developed using the spectral data of only 5 bands with a FWHM of 25 nm (at 519.5 nm, 620.1 nm, 660.3 nm, 719.8 nm, and 980.3 nm) provided an R2 of 0.62, an RMSE of 4.54 mg/g, and an RE of 10.3%. These results show that a multispectral image sensor can be developed to predict the total polyphenol content of tomato seedlings subjected to low-temperature stress, paving the way for energy saving and low-temperature stress damage prevention in vegetable seedling production.

Introduction of alpine grasses to low altitude regions has long been a crucial strategy for enriching germplasm diversity, cultivating and acclimating high-quality species, enhancing ecosystem resilience and adaptability, as well as facilitating ecosystem restoration. However, there is an urgent need to investigate the impacts of planting Gramineae seeds on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly during the critical stage of early plant growth. In this study, four species of grass seeds (Stipa breviflora, Poa pratensis, Achnatherum splendens, Elymus nutans) were collected from 19 high-altitude regions surrounding the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and sown at low-altitude. Measurements of GHG emissions at early seedling growth in the mesocosm experiment using static chamber method showed a strong increase in the cumulative emissions of CO2 (5.71%-9.19%) and N2O (11.36%-13.64%) (p < 0.05), as well as an elevated CH4 uptake (2.75%-5.50%) in sites where the four grass species were introduced, compared to bare soil. Consequently, there was a substantial rise in global warming potential (13.87%-16.33%) (p < 0.05) at grass-introduced sites. Redundancy analysis showed that seed traits, plant biomass, and seedling emergence percentage were the main driving biotic factors of three GHGs fluxes. Our study unveils the potential risk of escalating GHG emissions induced by introducing high altitude grasses to low altitude bare soil, elucidating the mechanism through linking seed traits with seedling establishment and environmental feedback. Furthermore, this offers a new perspective for assessing the impact of grass introduction on ecological environment of introduced site.

Microgreens have recently gained popularity owing to their reliable economic and nutritional value. This study aimed to increase the quality of microgreen broccoli via treatment with different concentrations (1%, IPB-1; 3%, IPB-3; 5%, IPB-5; or 7%, IPB-7 w/v) of illite-a natural mineral powder. The results showed that the illite treatments considerably increased the content of mineral elements, such as Ca, P, and K; of vitamin C; and of free amino acids; and also increased the total weight of the broccoli sprouts. The content of sulforaphane, a bioactive compound, also increased by up to 47% with illite treatment, with the highest increase being in the IPB-5 group. However, several of the parameters were lower in the IPB-7 group. Aromatic compounds were categorized by functional groups such as hydrocarbons which numbered 36, 30, 34, 28, and 30 in the control, IPB-1, IPB-3, IPB-5, and IPB-7 groups, respectively. We found 16, 15, 15, 13, and 14 sulfides, including dimethyl sulfide, in the control, IPB-1, IPB-3, IPB-5, and IPB-7 groups, respectively. Additionally, aldehydes, comprising seven compounds, were detected in the IPB-1, IPB-3, IPB-5, and IPB-7 groups. Illite treatment significantly increased the activities of antioxidants such as DPPH and the polyphenol content of the microgreens. These results indicate a potential role for appropriate illite doses in microgreen treatment to address multinutrient deficiencies and to increase the quality of microgreen vegetables.

BACKGROUND: To improve the current low per capita consumption of lentils, the present study first aimed to minimize the anti-nutrient content of two yellow Moroccan and Italian lentil seeds by resorting to the malting process and then testing the resulting decorticated flours as ingredients in the formulation of gluten-free fresh egg pastas. RESULTS: The most proper operating conditions for the three malting process steps were identified in a bench-top plant. The first (water steeping) and second (germination) steps were studied at 18, 25 or 32 °C. After 2 or 3 h of steeping at 25 °C and almost 24 h of germination, 95-98.8% of the lentil seeds sprouted. By prolonging the germination process to 72 h, the raffinose or phytic acid content was reduced by about 80% or 95% or 27% or 37%, respectively. The third step (kilning) was carried out under fluent dry air at 50 °C for 24 h and at 75 °C for 3 h. The cotyledons of the resulting yellow lentil malts were cyclonically recovered, milled and chemico-physically characterized. CONCLUSION: Both flours were used to prepare fresh egg-pastas essentially devoid of oligosaccharides, and low in phytate (4.6-6.0 mg g-1 ) and in vitro glycemic index (38-41%). However, the cooking quality of the fresh egg pasta made of malted Moroccan lentil flour was higher with respect to its crude protein content and lower with respect to its water solubility index. © 2023 The Authors. BACKGROUND: Spring irrigation with freshwater is widely used to reduce soil salinity and increase the soil water content in arid areas. However, this approach requires a huge amount of freshwater, which is problematic given limited freshwater resources. Utilizing brackish water for spring irrigation in combination with magnetized water technology may be a promising alternative strategy. RESULTS: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of four spring irrigation methods (freshwater spring irrigation (FS), magnetized freshwater spring irrigation (MFS), brackish water spring irrigation (BS), and magnetized brackish water spring irrigation (MBS)) on soil water and salt distribution, emergence, growth, and photosynthetic characteristics of cotton seedlings. The results showed that for both freshwater and brackish water, magnetized water irrigation can increase the soil water content for improved desalination effect of irrigation water. Additionally, spring irrigation with magnetized water promoted cotton emergence and seedling growth. Compared with FS treatment, cotton finial emergence rate, emergence index, vigor index, plant height, stem diameter, and leaf area index of MFS treatment increased by 6.25, 7.19, 12.98, 15.60, 8.91, and 20.57%, respectively. Compared with BS treatment, cotton finial emergence rate, emergence index, vigor index, plant height, stem diameter, and leaf area index of MBS treatment increased by 27.78, 39.83, 74.79, 26.40, 14.01, and 57.22%, respectively. Interestingly, we found that spring irrigation with magnetized water can increase the chlorophyll content and net photosynthetic rate of cotton seedlings. The rectangular hyperbolic model (RHM), non-rectangular hyperbolic model (NRHM), exponential model (EM), and modified rectangular hyperbolic model (MRHM) were used to fit and compare the cotton light response curve, and MRHM was determined to be the optimal model to fit the data. This model was used to calculate the photosynthetic parameters of cotton. Compared with FS treatment, the net photosynthetic rate (Pnmax), dark respiration rate (Rd), light compensation point (Ic), light saturation point (Isat), and the range of available light intensity (ΔI) of MFS were increased by 5.18, 3.41, 3.18, 2.29 and 2.19%, respectively. Compared with BS treatment, the Pnmax, Rd, Ic, Isat and ΔI of MBS were increased by 26.44, 29.48, 30.05, 5.13, and 2.27%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The results show that spring irrigation with magnetized brackish water may be a feasible method to reduce soil salt and increase soil water content when freshwater resources are insufficient.

Sprouts are consumed as fresh foods or their flours can be added in processed products as determinants of sensory perception, product differentiation, and shelf life. Elicitation technique can be used to accumulate phytochemicals in plant sprouts thereby improving their functionality. This review summarized the recent state of knowledge on the use of elicitors to produce sprouts with improved functional properties. Elicitation using abiotic or biotic elicitors has been applied to increase the yield of sprout secondary metabolites (glucosinolates, aminobutyric acid, phenolic compounds), biological activities (antioxidant, anti-obesity, antidiabetic properties), and growth. Elicitors trigger the synthesis of plant metabolites by changing enzyme activities or gene expression related to the plant defence system. They also promote sprout growth by enhancing the levels of plant growth hormones. Elicitation is an effective method to produce sprouts with improved health benefits, and enhance their growth. Future studies are needed to identify early plant signaling pathways to fully understand elicitors' mechanisms on plant metabolites. Moreover, further investigation can be impetus in revealing the lower and upper limits of elicitor that can be applied in sprouts without compromising health and environmental safety.

Partition coefficient is a key parameter for counter-current chromatography separation. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is the most commonly used tool for the screening of partition coefficients. However, HPLC technology is not applicable to the compounds present in the same chromatographic peak. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology could easily distinguish compounds according to their characteristic absorption even if they exist in the same HPLC peak. In this study, two flavonoids present in the same HPLC peak were successfully purified by counter-current chromatography with a solvent system screened by NMR to show the great potential of NMR technology in the screening of the partition coefficient of co-efflux compounds. Through NMR screening, an optimized ethyl acetate/n-buthanol/water (7:3:10, v/v/v) system was applied in this study. As a result, two flavonoids, including 4.8 mg of 3'-methoxyl-6'''-O-feruloylsaponarin and 9.8 mg of 6'''-O-feruloylsaponarin were separated from 15 mg of the mixture. There is only one methoxy group difference between the two flavonoids. This study provides a new strategy for the screening of counter-current chromatography solvent systems and broadens the application scope of counter-current chromatography.

The study aims to reveal the effects of different Zn levels on pot marigold. We determined some germination and young seedling properties in the first experiment, and morphological, stomatal, and physiological parameters besides uptake profiles of both Zn and other plant nutrients in the second one. We supplied the water requirement of the seeds with Zn solutions (0, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 mg l-1) in the first experiment, and We added the same zinc doses as mg kg-1 to the soil of the pots where the plants would grow in the second one. As a result, the inhibitory effects were more prominent in the early seedling stage (especially at 1,000 mg l-1 Zn) than in the germination one. We determined plant growth retardation, decreases in leaf water contents, and increases in membrane damages with higher Zn (≥500 mg kg-1) in the experiment conducted by potting soil. We detected decreases in chlorophyll parameters parallel with the increases in Zn. The alterations in plant zinc contents revealed the accumulation capacity of pot marigold in potting conditions. That TF value >1 in Zn treatments up to 500 mg kg-1 points to the efficiency limit of pot marigold as a Zn-accumulator plant.
To reveal the zinc tolerance of the plant through experiments carried out in two different plant growth stages, germination-young seedling and adult plant is an innovative approach. Besides, it is the first study to evaluate detailed morphological, physiological, stomatal and nutrient contents of pot marigold under heavy metal stress conditions. Thus, this study displayed both tolerance level and accumulation potential in potting conditions of pot-marigold to zinc.

Soils contaminated with elevated levels of toxic heavy metals affect the soil quality. Phytoremediation is one of the constructive methods used in the mitigation of toxic metals from the soil. A pot experiment was performed by application of eight different concentrations of CCA viz 250, 500, 750, 1,000, 1,250, 1,500, 2,000, and 2,500 mg kg-1 soil to evaluate the efficiency of Acacia mangium and Acacia auriculiformis in phytoremediation of CCA compounds. Results showed that the shoot and root length, height, collar diameter, and biomass of the seedlings were significantly reduced with increase in CCA concentrations. The roots of the seedlings accumulated 1.5- to 2.0-fold higher amounts of CCA than in stem and leaves. The amount of Cr, Cu, and As found in the roots of A. mangium and A. auriculiformis at 2,500 mg CCA were 10.01 and 10.13, 8.51 and 8.84 mg, and 0.18 and 0.33 mg g-1, respectively. Similarly, the amount of Cr, Cu, and As found in stem and leaves were 4.33 and 7.84, 3.51 and 6.62, and 0.10 and 0.11 mg g-1, respectively. The quantity of Cr, Cu, and As found in stem and leaves were 5.95 and 9.00, 4.86 and 7.18, and 0.09 and 0.14 mg g-1, respectively. Overall, the present study advocates potential use of A. mangium and A. auriculiformis in phytoremediation of Cr, Cu, and As contaminated soils.
Phytoremediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals is well documented. Interestingly, information on the influence of Acacia tree species in remediation of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is scanty. We found that the higher concentrations of CCA (1,0005,000 mg) significantly reduced the seed germination, growth, and biomass of seedlings. Further, the results revealed that accumulation of Cr, Cu, and As were 1.5- to 2-fold higher in roots than in shoots. Present study adds knowledge on efficacy of Acacia mangium and Acacia auriculiformis in phytoremediation of CCA contaminated soils.

Plants pretreatment with various chemicals has often been used to diminish salinity stress impact on plants. An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of foliar spray of two commercially available biostimulants (Algabon® [0.5 g/l] and Bonamid® [2 g/l]) on the growth and tolerance of halophytic grass, Pucccinellia distans under non-salinity condition (NSC) and salinity condition (SC). The greenhouse experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with three treatments repeated three times. Our results showed that biomass, leaf relative water content, chlorophyll content, K+ content, K+/Na+ ratio, and protein and N contents were all negatively affected by 300 mM NaCl. The results obtained in the present study showed the beneficial effects of the pretreatments of two biostimulants on P. distans seedlings under non-salinity stress conditions with respect to increasing plant biomass, photosynthetic pigments, K+ content, the content of proteins, and nitrogen percentage. The results suggested that foliar spray of Bonamid® could partly diminish NaCl-caused stress on P. distans seedlings, probably due to higher accumulation of shoot biomass, photosynthetic pigments, K+/Na+ ratio, protein and N contents, phytoremediation potential, as well as upregulation of Na+/H+ antiporters located in plasma membranes and vacuoles. The highest phytoremediation potential (PP) of shoots and total biomass was detected in the plants sprayed with Bonamid® by 50.8 and 42.7% respectively, relative to that in salinity-stressed control plants. Interestingly, foliar spray with two biostimulants decreased osmoprotectants and antioxidant compounds content of shoots under salinity stress conditions. Collectively, it could be concluded that a noticeable feature of pretreatment of P. distans seedlings with Algabon® and Bonamid® is the increase in growth under NSC, whereas under SC only pretreated plants with amino acid-derived biostimulant (Bonamid®) can (partly) diminish the NaCl-induced deleterious effects in P. distans seedlings through the compartmentalization of salts in vacuoles (by upregulation of Na+/H+ antiporters).
We report for the first time that foliar spray of two commercially biostimulants (Algabon® and Bonamid®) could improve growth and phytoremediation potential of halophytic grass, Pucccinellia distans under the subsequent salinity stress. We also illustrated the impact of biostimulants on the mechanisms behind the improvement in tolerance of P. distans to the following salinity in regard to K+/Na+ ratio, protein and N contents, antioxidant capacity, osmoprotectant compounds, and the upregulation of Na+/H+ antiporters located in plasma membranes and vacuoles.

To select urban greening tree species suitable for the purification of the atmosphere polluted by black carbon (BC) particles, it is necessary to clarify the determinants of the amount of BC particles deposited on the tree leaves. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between the amount of BC particles that were deposited from the atmosphere and firmly adhered to the leaf epicuticular wax, and leaf surface traits in seedlings of nine tree species grown for two years under natural conditions (Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan). There was a significant interspecific difference in the maximum amount of BC particles deposited on the leaf surface, and the order was as follows: Ilex rotunda > Cornus florida > Osmanthus fragrans > Cornus kousa > Quercus glauca â Quercus myrsinifolia > Magnolia kobus â Zelkova serrata â Styrax japonicus. In the nine tree species, significant highly positive correlations were observed between the amount of BC particles deposited on the leaf surface, and the hydrophobicity of leaf epicuticular wax determined by its chemical composition. Therefore, we concluded that the hydrophobicity of leaf epicuticular wax is an important determinant of the amount of BC particles deposited on the leaf surface of urban greening tree species.
This is the first paper that shows that the hydrophobicity of leaf epicuticular wax is an important determinant of the amount of BC particles deposited on the leaf surface of urban greening tree species. This study will provide the basic and novel information for the selection of urban greening tree species suitable for the purification of the air polluted by BC particles.

Agricultural applications of olive mill wastewater (OMW) represent a critical challenge, consistent with waste recycling and the trend towards a more sustainable pattern of agriculture. In this context, an integrated study on the agroecological applications of OMW from the ultrafiltration (UF) - nanofiltration (NF) process was carried out. This process generated three fractions: UF retentate and NF permeate, depleted in salts and phenolic compounds, were studied for their fertilization and irrigation potential, while NF retentate, enriched in these elements, was studied for its potential as a bioherbicide. The phytotoxicity of the NF retentate fraction on two crops (maize and flax) was evaluated on seedlings growth and chloroplast pigments content. In addition, the induced defense responses in maize and flax seedlings were investigated by measuring two parameters: the activity of the detoxification enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and the concentration of polyphenols, as a component of the antioxidant defense strategy in plants. Biomass, height, and chloroplast pigments content decreased progressively with increasing NF retentate concentration. Conversely, an increase in GST activity and polyphenol concentration was observed. These results highlighted the ability of OMW to induce an oxidative stress on maize and flax seedlings, triggering a defense response through GST and phenolic compounds. On the other hand, in vitro tests on the phytotoxicity of the NF retentate fraction on the common weed Sinapis arvensis were carried out. No germination was observed even with the lowest dilution applied, thus establishing the first data about the selectivity of potential OMW-derived bioherbicides. On the other hand, UF retentate and NF permeate treatments led to a significant increase in maize growth: these fractions could then be considered as a promising organic fertilizer for degraded agricultural soils, as well as an alternative water source for crops irrigation.

Artemia egg shell loaded with nano-magnesium (shell-Mg) can be used to recover phosphorus from wastewater. The exhausted Artemia egg shell-Mg (denoted as shell-Mg-P) can be used as a slow-release fertilizer for phosphorus reuse. However, due to the coexistence of heavy metal ions in the environment, the application of slow-release fertilizer for phosphorus removal and reuse may have potential risks. In this paper, the potential risks of Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ in phosphorus wastewater and soil were studied from the formation and application process of shell-Mg-P. The result showed that shell-Mg adsorbed Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ in phosphate wastewater during the formation of shell-Mg-P and became shell-Mg-P-metal hybrid biomaterial. Although the experiment proved that the existence of heavy metal ions did not affect the phosphorus slow-release behavior of slow-release fertilizer, but the heavy metal ions in the shell-Mg-P-metal were also slow released. The pot experiment results confirmed that the slow-release phosphorus fertilizers (shell-Mg-P and shell-Mg-P-metal) in the soil polluted in low concentration of heavy metals can reduce the amount of heavy metals in whole wheat seedlings and promote wheat seedling growth. However, the application of slow-release fertilizers increased the translocation efficiency (TFR to SL) of metal from root (R) to aboveground part (stem and leaves, SL), promoted the transportation of heavy metals from roots to the stems and leaves, and increased the safety risk of the wheat seedling edible. Therefore, besides the positive role of slow-release fertilizers in retaining heavy metals and reducing the amount of heavy metals in whole seedlings, the risk that it may aggravate the translocation of heavy metals to stems and leaves should be paid more attention, so as to ensure the safe and reliable application of slow-release fertilizers.

BACKGROUND: Maize is a sought-after food crop because it is micronutrient-rich and affordable. It is an excellent source of carotenoids and tocochromanols. To investigate ways to enhance the micronutrients in maize, we grew maize seedlings with ultrasonic pretreatment to study the effect of ultrasound pretreatment on the biofortification of tocochromanols and carotenoids using high-performance liquid chromatography and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Four tocopherol isomers, three tocotrienol isomers and six carotenoid components were measured in maize seedlings. Compared with the untreated maize seedlings, carotenoid content increased and reached the highest level at 8 min ultrasonic pretreatment (19.21 ± 0.44 µg g-1 fresh weight (FW)), but tocotrienol content evidently decreased. Tocopherol dropped at first but began to rise after 8 min ultrasonic pretreatment (258.1 ± 6.4 µg g-1 FW). In particular, zeaxanthin in maize seedlings doubled after pre-sonication, while lutein was boosted to 11.81 ± 0.20 µg g-1 FW. Ultrasonic pretreatment changed the predominant component of tocochromanols in maize seedlings from γ-tocotrienol to α-tocopherol, with the latter content being 1.3 times higher than in the untreated group. Up-regulation of key genes involved in the biosynthesis of tocopherols and carotenoids in maize seedlings occurred as a result of both 2 min and 6 min sonication pretreatment. In particular, Zm HPPD, Zm ZE, Zm ZDS and Zm MPBQ-MT could partly explain the changes in these phytochemicals. CONCLUSION: Wet ultrasonic pretreatment could increase tocopherol and carotenoid accumulation in maize seedlings but decrease tocotrienol synthesis. Some up-regulating genes are related to relevant syntheses, such as Zm HPPD, Zm ZE, Zm ZDS and Zm MPBQ-MT, which could influence the accumulation of tocopherols and carotenoids after ultrasonic pretreatment. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Lignification causes a detrimental impact on the quality of edible sprouts. However, the mechanism of inhibition of lignification of edible sprouts by nano-selenium and lentinans remains unclear. RESULTS: To reveal the mechanism of lignification regulation of sprouts by nano-selenium and lentinans, this study investigated the changes in antioxidant indicators, phytohormones, polyphenols, and metabolites in the lignin biosynthesis in pea sprouts following sprays of nano-selenium or/and lentinans twice. There was an overall increase in the aforementioned indices following treatment. In particular, the combined application of 5 mg L-1 nano-selenium and 20 mg L-1 lentinans was more effective than their individual applications in enhancing peroxidase, catalase, DPPH free-radical scavenging rate, luteolin, and sinapic acid, as well as inhibiting malondialdehyde generation and lignin accumulation. Combined with the results from correlation analysis, nano-selenium and lentinans may inhibit lignification by enhancing antioxidant systems, inducing phytohormone-mediated signaling, and enriching precursor metabolites (caffeyl alcohol, sinapyl alcohol, 4-coumaryl alcohol). In terms of the results of non-targeted metabolomics, the combined application of 5 mg L-1 nano-selenium and 20 mg L-1 lentinans mainly affected biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites, biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism, and linoleic acid metabolism pathways, which supported and complemented results from targeted screenings. CONCLUSION: Overall, the combined sprays of nano-selenium and lentinans showed synergistic effects in delaying lignification and optimizing the quality of pea sprouts. This study provides a novel and practicable technology for delaying lignification in the cultivation of edible sprouts. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Invasive plants can change the soil ecological environment in the invasion area to adapt to their growth and reproduction through root exudates. Root exudates are the most direct manifestation of plant responses to external environmental changes, but there is a lack of studies on root exudates of invasive plants in the context of inevitable global warming and nitrogen deposition. In this research, we used widely targeted metabolomics to investigate Ambrosia trifida root exudates during seedling and maturity under warming and nitrogen deposition to reveal the possible mechanisms of A. trifida adaptation to climate change. The results showed that the organic acids increased under warming condition but decreased after nitrogen addition in the seedling stage. Phenolic acids increased greatly after nitrogen addition in the mature stage. Most phenolic acids were annotated in the phenylpropane metabolic pathway and tyrosine metabolism. Therefore, nitrogen deposition may increase the adaptability of A. trifida through root exudates, making it more invasive under global warming. The results provide new ideas for preventing and controlling the invasion of A. trifida under climate change.
