ABSTRACT
Objective. To know the efficacy of physiotherapy in improving pain and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with fibromyalgia (FM). Material and Methods. A randomized clinical trial with 28 women diagnosed with FM (mean age 50.59 years, SD 7.94) distributed into 2 groups was conducted. The intervention group received physiotherapy for 12 weeks. This therapy included aerobic exercise and relaxation techniques with analgesic physiotherapy. Pain was assessed with a numeric rating scale and the HRQoL with the health short-form questionnaire (SF-36). Results. The women had serious health deterioration at the beginning. At the end of the study, the intervention group showed a statistically significant (SS) increase in all dimensions of the SF-36 questionnaire except for mental health. Between-group analysis showed SS differences in three dimensions: physical problems, pain and perception of general health. Decrease in the pain numerical scale for the intervention group and its difference with the control group was also SS. Conclusion. A physiotherapy program including aerobic exercises, relaxation techniques and specific analgesic techniques may be an effective tool in improving pain and HRQoL of patients with FM (AU)
