La investigación cualitativa tiene un papel cada vez más preponderante en la investigación formativa que suministra información para el diseño de un estudio o programa. Los resultados de este tipo de investigación ayudan a los diseñadores de encuestas en muchas formas desde determinar la forma más apropiada de formular una pregunta hasta determinar cuáles preguntas hacer y a quién encuestar. Cuando un estudio incluye métodos cuantitativos y cualitativos, los investigadores pueden usar resultados cualitativos para comprender mejor los resultados cuantitativos y para aumentar la validez del estudio en general. Al permitir que las personas que realmente toman decisiones de salud reproductiva expresen sus ideas, la investigación cualitativa ofrece oportunidades para determinar y abordar necesidades e inquietudes de los clientes. Estudios exploratorios han permitido obtener conocimientos relativos a temas como toma de decisiones sexuales en relaciones matrimoniales, razones por las que las mujeres prefieren ciertos métodosanticonceptivos, percepciones de las causas de la infertilidad, reacciones a cambios de la prestación de servicios como resultado de la reforma del sector de la salud.
Cualitative investigation has a very important role in the formative investigation that supplies information for the design of a program or study. The results of this type of investigation help surveys designers in many ways finding the most appropiated way to ask for a question or setting which questions and to whom do the survey. When a study includes cuantitative and cualitative methods, investigators can use the cualitative results to have a better understanding of the cuantitaive results and to increase the cuality of the study. Allowing persons that really make decisions about reproductive health to express their ideas, cualitative investigation offers opportunities to face the needs and worries of the customs. Exploratory studies have allowed us to obtain, knowledge about matters like making sexual decisions during marriage, reasons why women prefer certain kind of contraceptives, perceptions of the causes of infertility, reactions to the changes in services as a result of the reform of the public health.
