Purpose: Update the list of medical acts in the specialty of neurosurgery, eliminating obsolete acts and adding the new surgical techniques developed in recent years, so that they are faithfully adapted to the usual medical practice of our specialty, as well as establishing the general principles and defining the grading criteria, quantitative indicators and assessment scales. Material and method: The elaboration of the new nomenclator was divided into three phases: (1) identification and selection of medical acts, (2) establishment of the degree of difficulty of each of them based on the experience and the time necessary for their completion, as well as the percentage and severity of the possible complications and (3) consensus with the members of the SENEC through their individualized submission, making the necessary adjustments and subsequent approval in the general assembly of SENEC. Results: The new nomenclator has 255 medical acts grouped into four groups: consultations and visits, therapeutic acts, diagnostic procedures and surgical interventions. Forty-two procedures included in the OMC nomenclator have been eliminated due to being obsolete, not related to the specialty or being too vague. New techniques have been included and medical acts have been more precisely defined. Conclusions: This nomenclator provides up-to-date terminology and will serve to offer the portfolio of services, measure and know the relative value of our activity and the approximate costs of the procedures, and additionally, to carry out longitudinal comparative studies. It should be a tool to improve patient care and minimize geographic variability in all healthcare settings.(AU)

In the healthcare field, the terms traqueotomía and traqueostomía are frequently used, often leading to confusion among professionals regarding the appropriate definition for each term or which one should be considered more correct in specific cases. A search was conducted for the terms traqueotomía and traqueostomía in general Spanish-language dictionaries such as the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (DRAE) and the Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Language of the Royal Spanish Academy (DHLE), as well as for the English terms tracheotomy and tracheostomy in English general dictionaries like the Oxford Dictionary, the Cambridge Dictionary, and the Collins English Dictionary. Additionally, searches were performed in medical dictionaries in both Spanish, specifically the Dictionary of Medical Terms of the National Academy of Medicine (DTM), and English, including the Farlex Dictionary. The terms were also explored using the Google search engine. Definitions were analyzed from both lexicographical and etymological perspectives. Definitions found in general dictionaries, in both Spanish and English, were found to be imprecise, limited, and ambiguous, as they mixed outdated indications with criteria that deviated from etymology. In contrast, definitions in medical dictionaries in both languages were more aligned with etymology. Traqueotomía strictly identifies the surgical procedure of creating an opening in the anterior face of the trachea. Traqueostomía identifies the creation of an opening that connects the trachea to the exterior, involving a modification of the upper airway by providing an additional entry for the respiratory pathway. Traqueostomía becomes the sole means of entry to the airway in total laryngectomies. Both terms can be used synonymously when a traqueotomía culminates in a traqueostomía. However, it is not appropriate to use the term traqueostomía when the procedure concludes with the closure of the planes and does not result in the creation of a stoma. Traqueostomas can be qualified with adjectives indicating permanence (temporary/permanent), size (large/small), shape (round/elliptical), or depth, without being linked to any specific disease or surgical indication. Not all permanent traqueostomas are the result of total laryngectomies, and they do not necessarily have an irreversible character systematically.(AU)

The terminology used to describe reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) findings in both melanocytic and nonmelanocytic lesions has been standardized in English. We convened a panel of Spanish-speaking RCM experts and used the Delphi method to seek consensus on which Spanish terms best describe RCM findings in this setting. The experts agreed on 52 terms: 28 for melanocytic lesions and 24 for nonmelanocytic lesions. The resulting terminology will facilitate homogenization, leading to a better understanding of structures, more standardized descriptions in clinical registries, and easier interpretation of clinical reports exchanged between dermatologists.(AU)

I's too early, nowadays, to assess the potential impact on healthcare of a nascent concept such as the metaverse. The technical tools necessary to construct it are readily available, and for some of them already independently used in selected domains of medical care, with success. The convergence of the construction stones will result in an extended reality. Multisensory feedback (inclusive haptic) will end up in a much more realistic and complex virtual immersion, paving the way to new socio-emotional experiences and new communication models, conducive to education, diagnosis and treatment, all of potential interest in heathcare.

One aspect of effective scientific writing in physiology is the ability to select the correct words or short phrases to use when developing your narratives. This task is made difficult because many commonly used terms have seemingly viable alternatives, leading to confusion, uncertainty, and possible misuse of those words and phrases. In this perspective, we attempt to provide general guidance when selecting between or among options for commonly confused and misused terms in scientific writing. We have organized inaccurate, confusing, commonly misused, and misleading words and phrases into separate tables categorized as general language, demographic descriptors, general science, physiological sciences, and exercise physiology. Our modest hope is that the current perspective facilitates effective writing and encourages discussion regarding the importance of clarity in writing.

Terms in the current glossary are arranged alphabetically by the most commonly used synonym. Most of the terms have two complementary definitions: a "general public definition" or introductory definition, geared towards a wider readership, and an "academic definition," which may be more detailed, or "expert." There is some overlap between the definitions, and readers may choose to read either or both.

In current medical and lay communication practice, the terms coloscopy and colonoscopy appear in parallel, and their usage is quite varied. The conclusion of the article is neither the form coloscopy nor the form colonoscopy is to be rejected. The final form depends on how the term got into Czech medical terminology - whether directly from Greek or via French (coloscopy) or through English (colonoscopy). As far as the professional-medical discourse is concerned, the article supports those opinions that recommend the unification of the first variant for professional medical practice, i.e. term coloscopy as a direct adaptation of the Greek word. However, regarding common practice in relation to patients, the fact that the term colonoscopy is more frequent and more familiar to users cannot be neglected; therefore, it cannot be rejected.
