RESUMO

The predominant method for pest control has been the use of pesticides, which have been shown to have detrimental effects on soil, freshwater, and crop quality. Therefore, the development of novel and sustainable crop protection strategies has become increasingly imperative. In this study, a novel orange-red emitting Ba2SrWO6: Sm3+ phosphor was synthesized using the high-temperature solid-state reaction. Under ultraviolet excitation, the phosphors showed obvious emission peaks at 575, 614, and 662 nm. The Ba2SrWO6: Sm3+ was used to fabricate a fluorescence film with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and attracted twice as many insects as the blank control group under 365 nm ultraviolet light. This material holds great potential as a fluorescent agent for insect trapping in the pest control fields of tea, cotton, eggplant, rice, potato, grape, and other agricultural industries. Our findings provide an eco-friendly approach to pest management for the increment of food production.

RESUMO

Acidic pH can modify the properties of repair cements. In this study, volumetric change and solubility of the ready-to-use bioceramic repair cement Bio-C Repair (BCR, Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil) were evaluated after immersion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) (pH 7.0) or butyric acid (pH 4.5). Solubility was determined by the difference in initial and final mass using polyethylene tubes measuring 4 mm high and 6.70 mm in internal diameter that were filled with BCR and immersed in 7.5 mL of PBS or butyric acid for 7 days. The volumetric change was established by using bovine dentin tubes measuring 4 mm long with an internal diameter of 1.5 mm. The dentin tubes were filled with BCR at 37°C for 24 hours. Scanning was performed with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT; SkyScan 1176, Bruker, Kontich, Belgium) with a voxel size of 8.74 µm. Then, the specimens were immersed in 1.5 mL of PBS or butyric acid at and 37 °C for 7 days. After this period, a new micro-CT scan was performed. Bio-C Repair showed greater mass loss after immersion in butyric acid when compared with immersion in PBS (p<0.05). Bio-C Repair showed volumetric loss after immersion in butyric acid and increase in volume after immersion in PBS (p<0.05). The acidic pH influenced the solubility and dimensional stability of the Bio-C Repair bioceramic cement, promoting a higher percentage of solubility and decrease in volumetric values.

RESUMO

In the field of soil mechanics, especially in transportation and environmental geotechnics, the use of machine learning (ML) techniques has emerged as a powerful tool for predicting and understanding the compressive strength behavior of soils especially graded ones. This is to overcome the sophisticated equipment, laboratory space and cost needs utilized in multiple experiments on the treatment of soils for environmental geotechnics systems. This present study explores the application of machine learning (ML) techniques, namely Genetic Programming (GP), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR), and the Response Surface Methodology in predicting the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soil-lime mixtures. This was for purposes of subgrade and landfill liner design and construction. By utilizing input variables such as Gravel, Sand, Silt, Clay, and Lime contents (G, S, M, C, L), the models forecasted the strength values after 7 and 28 days of curing. The accuracy of the developed models was compared, revealing that both ANN and EPR achieved a similar level of accuracy for UCS after 7 days, while the GP model performed slightly lower. The complexity of the formula required for predicting UCS after 28 days resulted in decreased accuracy. The ANN and EPR models achieved accuracies of 85% and 82%, with R2 of 0.947 and 0.923, and average error of 0.15 and 0.18, respectively, while the GP model exhibited a lower accuracy of 66.0%. Conversely, the RSM produced models for the UCS with predicted R2 of more than 98% and 99%, for the 7- and 28- day curing regimes, respectively. The RSM also produced adequate precision in modelling UCS of more than 14% against the standard 7%. All input factors were found to have almost equal importance, except for the lime content (L), which had an average influence. This shows the importance of soil gradation in the design and construction of subgrade and landfill liners. This research further demonstrates the potential of ML techniques for predicting the strength of lime reconstituted G-S-M-C graded soils and provides valuable insights for engineering applications in exact and sustainable subgrade and liner designs, construction and performance monitoring and rehabilitation of the constructed civil engineering infrastructure.

RESUMO

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are novel nanomaterials wherein perovskites are used to formulate quantum dots (QDs). The present study utilizes the excellent fluorescence quantum yields of these nanomaterials to detect 16S rRNA of circulating microbiome for risk assessment of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). A long short-term memory (LSTM) deep learning model was used to find the association of the circulating bacterial species with CVD risk, which showed the abundance of three different bacterial species (Bauldia litoralis (BL), Hymenobacter properus (HYM), and Virgisporangium myanmarense (VIG)). The observations suggested that the developed nano-sensor provides high sensitivity, selectivity, and applicability. The observed sensitivities for Bauldia litoralis, Hymenobacter properus, and Virgisporangium myanmarense were 0.606, 0.300, and 0.281 fg, respectively. The developed sensor eliminates the need for labelling, amplification, quantification, and biochemical assessments, which are more labour-intensive, time-consuming, and less reliable. Due to the rapid detection time, user-friendly nature, and stability, the proposed method has a significant advantage in facilitating point-of-care testing of CVDs in the future. This may also facilitate easy integration of the approach into various healthcare settings, making it accessible and valuable for resource-constrained environments.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The finger lime (Citrus australasica), one of six Australian endemic citrus species shows a high natural phenotypic diversity and novel characteristics. The wide variation and unique horticultural features have made this lime an attractive candidate for domestication. Currently no haplotype resolved genome is available for this species. Here we present a high quality, haplotype-resolved reference genome for this species using PacBio HiFi and Hi-C sequencing. RESULTS: Hifiasm assembly and SALSA scaffolding resulted in a collapsed genome size of 344.2 Mb and 321.1 Mb and 323.2 Mb size for the two haplotypes. The nine pseudochromosomes of the collapsed genome had an N50 of 35.2 Mb, 99.1% genome assembly completeness and 98.9% gene annotation completeness (BUSCO). A total of 41,304 genes were predicted in the nuclear genome. Comparison with C. australis revealed that 13,661 genes in pseudochromosomes were unique in C. australasica. These were mainly involved in plant-pathogen interactions, stress response, cellular metabolic and developmental processes, and signal transduction. The two genomes showed a syntenic arrangement at the chromosome level with large structural rearrangements in some chromosomes. Genetic variation among five C. australasica cultivars was analysed. Genes related to defense, synthesis of volatile compounds and red/yellow coloration were identified in the genome. A major expansion of genes encoding thylakoid curvature proteins was found in the C. australasica genome. CONCLUSIONS: The genome of C. australasica present in this study is of high quality and contiguity. This genome helps deepen our understanding of citrus evolution and reveals disease resistance and quality related genes with potential to accelerate the genetic improvement of citrus.

RESUMO

Simultaneously improving the stability and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of all inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) is crucial for their practical utilization in various optoelectronic devices. Here, CsPbBr3 NCs coated with polyethersulfone (PES) were prepared via an in-situ co-precipitation method. The sulfone groups in PES bind to undercoordinated lead ion (Pb2+) on the CsPbBr3 NCs, resulting in significant reduction of surface defects, thus enhancing the PLQY from 74.2% to 88.3%. Meanwhile, the PES-coated NCs exhibit high water resistance and excellent heat and light stability, maintaining over 85% of the initial PL intensity under thermal aging (70°C, 4 h) and continuous 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation (24 W, 8 h) conditions. By contrast, the PL intensity of the control NCs dramatically dropped to less than 40%. Finally, a diode emitting bright white light was fabricated utilizing the PES-coated CsPbBr3 NCs, which exhibits a color gamut of ~110% NTSC standard.

RESUMO

Probabilistic models enhance breeding, especially for the Tahiti acid lime, a fruit essential to fresh markets and industry. These models identify superior and persistent individuals using probability theory, providing a measure of uncertainty that can aid the recommendation. The objective of our study was to evaluate the use of a Bayesian probabilistic model for the recommendation of superior and persistent genotypes of Tahiti acid lime evaluated in 12 harvests. Leveraging the Monte Carlo Hamiltonian sampling algorithm, we calculated the probability of superior performance (superior genotypic value), and the probability of superior stability (reduced variance of the genotype-by-harvests interaction) of each genotype. The probability of superior stability was compared to a measure of persistence estimated from genotypic values predicted using a frequentist model. Our results demonstrated the applicability and advantages of the Bayesian probabilistic model, yielding similar parameters to those of the frequentist model, while providing further information about the probabilities associated with genotype performance and stability. Genotypes G15, G4, G18, and G11 emerged as the most superior in performance, whereas G24, G7, G13, and G3 were identified as the most stable. This study highlights the usefulness of Bayesian probabilistic models in the fruit trees cultivars recommendation.

RESUMO

The combination of microbial electrolytic cells and anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) became an efficient method to improve CO2 capture for waste sludge treatment. By adding CaCl2 and wollastonite, the CO2 sequestration effect with mineral carbonation under 0 V and 0.8 V was studied. The results showed that applied voltage could increase dissolved chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) degradation efficiency and biogas yield effectively. In addition, wollastonite and CaCl2 exhibited different CO2 sequestration performances due to different Ca2+ release characteristics. Wollastonite appeared to have a better CO2 sequestration effect and provided a wide margin of pH change, but CaCl2 released Ca2+ directly and decreased the pH of the MEC-AD system. The results showed methane yield reached 137.31 and 163.50 mL/g SCOD degraded and CO2 content of biogas is only 12.40 % and 2.22 % under 0.8 V with CaCl2 and wollastonite addition, respectively. Finally, the contribution of chemical CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation and biological CO2 sequestration by hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis was clarified with CaCl2 addition. The chemical and biological CO2 sequestration percentages were 46.79 % and 53.21 % under 0.8 V, respectively. With the increased applied voltage, the contribution of chemical CO2 sequestration rose accordingly. The findings in this study are of great significance for further comprehending the mechanism of calcium addition on CO2 sequestration in the MEC-AD system and providing guidance for the later engineering application.

RESUMO

Electromyography (EMG) proves invaluable myoelectric manifestation in identifying neuromuscular alterations resulting from ischemic strokes, serving as a potential marker for diagnostics of gait impairments caused by ischemia. This study aims to develop an interpretable machine learning (ML) framework capable of distinguishing between the myoelectric patterns of stroke patients and those of healthy individuals through Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques. The research included 48 stroke patients (average age 70.6 years, 65% male) undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation center, alongside 75 healthy adults (average age 76.3 years, 32% male) as the control group. EMG signals were recorded from wearable devices positioned on the bicep femoris and lateral gastrocnemius muscles of both lower limbs during indoor ground walking in a gait laboratory. Boosting ML techniques were deployed to identify stroke-related gait impairments using EMG gait features. Furthermore, we employed XAI techniques, such as Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP), Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME), and Anchors to interpret the role of EMG variables in the stroke-prediction models. Among the ML models assessed, the GBoost model demonstrated the highest classification performance (AUROC: 0.94) during cross-validation with the training dataset, and it also overperformed (AUROC: 0.92, accuracy: 85.26%) when evaluated using the testing EMG dataset. Through SHAP and LIME analyses, the study identified that EMG spectral features contributing to distinguishing the stroke group from the control group were associated with the right bicep femoris and lateral gastrocnemius muscles. This interpretable EMG-based stroke prediction model holds promise as an objective tool for predicting post-stroke gait impairments. Its potential application could greatly assist in managing post-stroke rehabilitation by providing reliable EMG biomarkers and address potential gait impairment in individuals recovering from ischemic stroke.

RESUMO

Food sources are susceptible to contamination with ochratoxin A (OTA), which is a serious threat to human health. Thus, the construction of novel, simple sensing platforms for OTA monitoring is of utmost need. Manganese-doped lead halide perovskite quantum dots encapsulated with mesoporous SiO2 (Mn-CsPbBr3 QDs@SiO2) were prepared here and used as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for OTA. Mn-CsPbBr3 QDs, synthesized at room temperature, exhibit dual emission with maximum wavelengths of 440 and 570 nm and, when embedded in the SiO2 layer, produce a stable and robust photoluminescence signal. By adding OTA to the probe, emission at 440 nm increases while emission at 570 nm decreases, so a ratiometric response is obtained. Experimental variables affecting the probe signal were studied and optimized and the mechanism of sensing was discussed. This ratiometric sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity and low detection limit (4.1 ng/ml) as well as a wide linear range from 5.0 to 250 ng/ml for OTA. A simple portable smartphone-based device was also constructed and applied for the fluorescence assay. With different OTA concentrations, the multicolor transition from pink to blue under a UV lamp led to simple visual and smartphone-assisted sensing of OTA by using a color analyzing application. Satisfactory recoveries in black tea, coffee, moldy fig and flour samples confirmed the reliability of the assay. The accuracy of the probe was proved by comparison of the results with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

RESUMO

Cement is the most widely used construction material due to its strength and affordability, but its production is energy intensive. Thus, the need to replace cement with widely available waste material such as incinerated black filter cake (IBFC) in order to reduce energy consumption and the associated CO2 emissions. However, because IBFC is a newly discovered cement replacement material, several parameters affecting the mechanical properties of IBFC-cement composite have not been thoroughly investigated yet. Thus, this work aims to investigate the impact of IBFC as a cement replacement and the addition of the calcifying bacterium Lysinibacillus sp. WH on the mechanical and self-healing properties of IBFC cement pastes. The properties of the IBFC-cement pastes were assessed by determining compressive strength, permeable void, water absorption, cement hydration product, and self-healing property. Increases in IBFC replacement reduced the durability of the cement pastes. The addition of the strain WH to IBFC cement pastes, resulting in biocement, increased the strength of the IBFC-cement composite. A 20% IBFC cement-replacement was determined to be the ideal ratio for producing biocement in this study, with a lower void percentage and water absorption value. Adding strain WH decreases pore sizes, densifies the matrix in ≤ 20% IBFC biocement, and enhances the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and AFm ettringite phases. Biogenic CaCO3 and C-S-H significantly increase IBFC composite strength, especially at ≤ 20% IBFC replacement. Moreover, IBFC-cement composites with strain WH exhibit self-healing properties, with bacteria precipitating CaCO3 crystals to bridge cracks within two weeks. Overall, this work provides an approach to produce a "green/sustainable" cement using biologically enabled self-healing characteristics.

RESUMO

Safe and hygienic management of human waste is essential in humanitarian settings. Urine-diverting dry toilets (UDDTs) can enable this management in some humanitarian emergency settings. A seeded, longitudinal environmental study was conducted in Hiloweyn refugee camp, Dollo Ado, Ethiopia, to measure Escherichia coli and Ascaris suum ova inactivation within closed UDDT vaults and to document environmental conditions (temperature, moisture content, and pH) that could influence inactivation. Hiloweyn camp represented an optimal location for a desiccation-based sanitation technology such as the UDDT. E. coli and Ascaris ova inactivation was observed in UDDTs under warm, dry, alkaline conditions at 6, 9, and 12 months of storage; UDDTs with samples containing <1000 E. coli/g total solids increased from 30 % to 95 % over 12 months, and a >2.8-log10 reduction in Ascaris ova viability was observed after 6 months. Additional laboratory-based studies were conducted to provide insights into the field study findings and study the impact of hydrated lime on E. coli and Ascaris ova inactivation. Results suggest that adding hydrated lime to elevate pH > 12 may increase inactivation and decrease storage time. Overall, UDDTs could contribute to the safe and hygienic management of human waste in comparable warm and dry humanitarian settings.

RESUMO

Calcium nitrate addition is economically viable and highly efficient for the in-situ treatment of contaminated sediment and enhancement of surface water quality, particularly in rural areas. However, conventional nitrate addition technologies have disadvantages such as excessive nitrate release, sharp ammonium increase, and weakened sulfide oxidation efficiency owing to rapid nitrate injection into the sediment. To resolve these defects, we propose a piped-slow-release (PSR) calcium nitrate dosing method and investigate its treatment efficiency and underlying mechanisms. The results illustrated that PSR dosing had a longer half-life (t1/2 = 5.08 days) and a lower maximum apparent nitrate escape rate of 1.28 % than conventional nitrate injection and other dosing methods. In addition, the PSR managed the inorganic nitrogen release into the overlying water, and after the treatment, the nitrate, ammonium, and nitrite concentrations of 0 mg/L, 8.60 mg/L, and 0 mg/L on day 28 were close to those of the control group (0 mg/L, 8.76 mg/L, and 0 mg/L, respectively). Moreover, the PSR method maintained a moderate nitrate concentration of approximately 3000 mg/L in sediment interstitial water by its controlled-release design, thus greatly enhancing the sulfide oxidation efficiency by relieving the inhibitory effects of high nitrate concentrations, with 83.0 % sulfide being eradicated within 5 days. Sulfide-ferrous nitrate reduction (denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium) genera (e.g., Sulfurimonas, Thiobacillus, and Thioalkalispira) were successively enhanced and dominated the microbial community, and the related functional genes displayed high relative abundances. These results imply that the PSR dosing method for calcium nitrate, characterized by flexible operation, high efficiency, low cost, and controllable processes, is appropriate for remediating black-odorous sediment in rural areas.

RESUMO

The treatment of large craniofacial bone defects requires more advanced and effective strategies than bone grafts since such defects are challenging and cannot heal without intervention. In this regard, 3D printing offers promising solutions through the fabrication of scaffolds with the required shape, porosity, and various biomaterials suitable for specific tissues. In this study, 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL)-based scaffolds containing up to 30 % tricalcium silicate (TCS) were fabricated and then modified by incorporation of decellularized bone matrix- oxidized sodium alginate (DBM-OA). The results showed that the addition of 20 % TCS increased compressive modulus by 4.5-fold, yield strength by 12-fold, and toughness by 15-fold compared to pure PCL. In addition, the samples containing TCS revealed the formation of crystalline phases with a Ca/P ratio near that of hydroxyapatite (1.67). Cellular experiment results demonstrated that TCS have improved the biocompatibility of PCL-based scaffolds. On day 7, the scaffolds modified with DBM and 20 % TCS exhibited 8-fold enhancement of ALP activity of placenta-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (P-MSCs) compared to pure PCL scaffolds. The present study's results suggest that the incorporation of TCS and DBM-OA into the PCL-based scaffold improves its mechanical behavior, bioactivity, biocompatibility, and promotes mineralization and early osteogenic activity.

RESUMO

Rapid bone regeneration in implants is important for successful transplantation. In this regard, we report the development of calcium silicate/zinc silicate (CS/ZS) dual-compound-incorporated calcium phosphate cement (CPC) scaffolds with a three-dimensional poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) network that synergistically promote bone regeneration. In vitroresults demonstrated that the incorporation of CS/ZS dual compounds into the CPC significantly promoted the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells compared to the addition of CS or ZS alone. Moreover, the bone-regeneration efficacy of the composite scaffolds was validated by filling in femur condyle defects in rabbits, which showed that the scaffolds with CS and ZS possessed a great bone repair effect, as evidenced by more new bone formation and a faster scaffold biodegradation compared to the scaffold with CS alone.

RESUMO

Premixed calcium silicate cements (pCSCs) contain vehicles which endow fluidity and viscosity to CSCs. This study aimed to investigate the effects of three vehicles, namely, polyethylene glycol (PEG), propylene glycol (PG), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), on the physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of pCSCs. The setting time, solubility, expansion rate, and mechanical strength of the pCSCs were evaluated, and the formation of calcium phosphate precipitates was assessed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The effects of pCSC extracts on the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were investigated. Finally, the tissue compatibility of pCSCs in rat femurs was observed. CSC containing PEG (CSC-PEG) exhibited higher solubility and setting time, and CSC-DMSO showed the highest expansion rate and mechanical strength. All pCSCs generated calcium phosphate precipitates. The extract of CSC-PG induced the highest expressions of osteogenic markers along with the greatest calcium deposites. When implanted in rat femurs, CSC-PEG was absorbed considerably, whereas CSC-PG remained relatively unaltered inside the femur.

RESUMO

When dental pulp is exposed, it must be covered with a biocompatible material to form reparative dentine. The material used, besides being biocompatible, should have an ideal surface structure for the attachment, proliferation and differentiation of dental pulp stem cells. This study aimed to evaluate the porosity of the microstructures of four pulp capping materials using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Biodentine, Bioaggregate, TheraCal and Dycal materials were prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions using 2 × 9 mm Teflon molds. A total of 60 samples, 15 in each group, were scanned using micro-CT. Open and closed pores and the total porosity of the microstructures of the materials were assessed. The findings obtained from the study were analyzed via the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney U test. The porosity of Bioaggregate was significantly higher than that of Biodentine, Dycal and TheraCal in all porosity values. While Biodentine did not show a statistically significant difference in open and total porosity values from either TheraCal or Dycal, closed porosity values of Dycal were significantly higher than those of Biodentine and TheraCal. Because of the affinity of cells to porous surfaces, the pulp capping materials' microstructure may affect the pulp capping treatment's success. From this perspective, the use of Bioaggregate in direct pulp capping may increase the success of treatment.

RESUMO

To evaluate the success of pulpotomy in treating immature permanent teeth with irreversible pulpitis. This case series included patients with irreversible pulpitis admitted to the Department of Oral Medicine at the author's Hospital between 2015 and 2020. The pulpotomies were carried out by clinicians with > 5 years of working experience. The follow-up findings and radiographic images were reviewed by two attending dentists. This study included 49 teeth from 48 children (25 boys and 23 girls). The follow-up was 23.3 ± 6.8 months (from 12 to 40 months). The success rate of pulpotomy was 85.7% (42/49). Pulpotomy failed in seven teeth (14.3%). The treatment success rate for traumatic crown fracture was lower than for dental caries and dens evaginatus (P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the success rate of the pulp-capping agent, tooth root developmental phase, and pulpotomy method (all P > 0.05). Pulpotomy might be successfully used to treat immature permanent teeth with irreversible pulpitis in young patients mainly caused by caries and a fractured tubercle of dens evaginatus.
