BACKGROUND: Low-quality, non-diverse diet is a main risk factor for premature death. Accurate measurement of habitual diet is challenging and there is a need for validated objective methods. Blood metabolite patterns reflect direct or enzymatically diet-induced metabolites. Here, we aimed to evaluate associations between blood metabolite patterns and a priori and data-driven food intake patterns. METHODS: 1, 895 participants in the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study, a population-based prospective cohort study, were included. Fasting plasma samples were analyzed with 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Food intake data from a 64-item validated food frequency questionnaire were summarized into a priori Healthy Diet Score (HDS), relative Mediterranean Diet Score (rMDS) and a set of plant-based diet indices (PDI) as well as data driven clusters from latent class analyses (LCA). Orthogonal projections to latent structures (OPLS) were used to explore clustering patterns of metabolites and their relation to reported dietary intake patterns. RESULTS: Age, sex, body mass index, education and year of study participation had significant influence on OPLS metabolite models. OPLS models for healthful PDI and LCA-clusters were not significant, whereas for HDS, rMDS, PDI and unhealthful PDI significant models were obtained (CV-ANOVA p < 0.001). Still, model statistics were weak and the ability of the models to correctly classify participants into highest and lowest quartiles of rMDS, PDI and unhealthful PDI was poor (50%/78%, 42%/75% and 59%/70%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Associations between blood metabolite patterns and a priori as well as data-driven food intake patterns were poor. NMR metabolomics may not be sufficiently sensitive to small metabolites that distinguish between complex dietary intake patterns, like lipids.

INTRODUCTION: Limited longitudinal research is available examining how American adults make dietary changes after learning they have diabetes. We examined the associations between diabetes awareness and changes in dietary quality and food intake in a prospective cohort from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A nested case-control design was used. In the original CARDIA study, black and white participants were recruited from four US urban areas and partitioned into one control group (no diabetes over 30-year follow-up) and three case groups (early-onset, intermediate-onset, later-onset diabetes groups) based on timing of diagnosis and first awareness of diabetes. Estimated mean A Priori Diet Quality Score (APDQS), and food subgroup intake were examined at three CARDIA examinations (year (Y)0, Y7, and Y20). The mean APDQS with 95% CIs and food intake (servings/day) were compared across the one control group and three case groups using exam-specific and repeated measures linear regression. RESULTS: Among 4576 participants (mean age: 25±4 years; 55% female; 49% black race), 653 incident cases (14.3%) of diabetes were observed over 30 years. APDQS was lowest at Y0 when the diabetes-free participants were aged 18-30 years (61.5-62.8), but increased over 20 years with advancing age across all groups (64.6-73.3). Lower APDQS in young adulthood was associated with a higher incidence of diabetes later in life. Diabetes awareness was associated with a net increase of 2.95 points in APDQS. The greatest increase of APDQS was when people learned of their diabetes for the first time (an increase of 5.71 in early-onset and 6.64 in intermediate-onset diabetes groups, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Advancing age and diabetes awareness were associated with more favorable dietary changes leading to improved diet quality. Optimal diet quality and healthy food intake in young adulthood seem important to prevent diabetes later in life.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There is no definition of nutrition impact symptoms (NISs) in cancer care. Moreover, there is a lack of evidence on the associations of NISs with dietary intake and eating-related distress (ERD) in advanced cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the associations of NISs with dietary intake and ERD in patients with advanced cancer. METHODS: This study entailed a secondary analysis of a multicenter self-reported questionnaire designed to develop measurements that assess ERD experienced by patients. Participants evaluated their dietary intake and 19 symptoms regarded as NISs using a 10-point scale. To determine the association between dietary intake and the number of NISs with a score ≥4, estimated adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the logistic regression model were calculated. Furthermore, to assess the association between ERD and the number of NISs with a score ≥4, multiple regression analysis was performed. RESULTS: A total of 302 patients were included in the analysis. The higher the number of NISs with a score ≥4, the lower the dietary intake tended to be. In the logistic regression model, significantly higher adjusted ORs than in the no NISs with a score ≥4 group were observed in the 4-6 NISs group, 7-9 NISs group, and 10 or more group (0.19 [95% CI, 0.07-0.52], p = 0.001; 0.11 [95% CI, 0.03-0.42], p = 0.001; 0.07 [95% CI, 0.01-0.36], p = 0.002, respectively). In the multiple regression analysis, the number of NISs with a score ≥4 was identified as one of the factors significantly associated with ERD. CONCLUSIONS: Having 4 or more NISs with a score ≥4 was shown to be predictive of the likelihood of reduced dietary intake. Furthermore, the higher the number of NISs with a score ≥4, the more likely the eating-related quality of life was impaired in advanced cancer.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease that causes joint erosion, as well as damage to extra-articular organs. The aim of this study was the investigation of the association between the Mediterranean diet quality index with disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study 184 females with rheumatoid arthritis were studied in Kermanshah, Iran. The American College of Rheumatology's 2010 criteria were used to diagnose RA. The biochemical tests including erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, rheumatoid facto, anti-nuclear antibody titration, antibodies against cyclic citrulline peptide, disease activity score 28 and the food frequency questionnaire was used to assess rheumatoid arthritis activity and the Mediterranean diet quality index, respectively. To compare the dietary intakes of participants across tertiles of Mediterranean diet score, we used Analysis of Variance. Multinomial logistic regression with three adjusted models was used to investigate the association between Mediterranean diet score with disease activity. RESULTS: 184 eligible patients with rheumatoid arthritis participated in this study. The mean age and duration of disease, body mass index, waist circumference and percent body fat did not differ significantly among the tertiles of the Mediterranean diet score (P-value>0.05). Participants in the highest tertile of Mediterranean diet score had significantly greater intakes of fruits, vegetables, fish, legume, nuts and had lowest intake of grains (refrain grain) and red and process meats to white meat ratio (P-value<0.05). There was no significant difference in terms of variables related to disease activity among the tertiles of the Mediterranean score (P-value>0.05). In multi-adjusted models, the odds ratio of Mediterranean diet scores no significant different in the third as compared to the first tertile of Mediterranean diet score (P-value>0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on our findings there is no association between the Mediterranean diet score and disease activity of people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Long-term oral ingestion of unheated yuzu seed oil in humans reduces lipid peroxides in the blood. Moreover, yuzu seed oil contains limonin, which can induce antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by activating the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Previously, Nrf2 has been shown to reduce atopic dermatitis (AD). Therefore, we hypothesized that ingesting unheated yuzu seed oil can regulate AD through Nrf2. An AD model was established using NC/Nga mice through repeated local exposure to mite antigens. Unheated and purified yuzu seed oil (100 µL/mice) or water (control, 100 µL/mice) was administered orally once a day using a gastric cannula for rodents for 28 days. On day 28, mice in the unheated yuzu seed oil group exhibited significantly lower clinical skin severity scores and ear thickness than those in the purified yuzu seed oil and water groups. Serum histamine levels remained unaltered among the three AD-induced groups. Serum Dermatophagoides farina body (Dfb)-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were significantly lower in the unheated yuzu seed oil group. Oral ingestion of yuzu seed oil in NC/Nga AD model mice significantly suppressed dermatitis deterioration and decreased serum IgE levels. Clinical trials (n = 41) have already confirmed that unheated yuzu oil is safe for long-term intake, further suggesting its potential use in improving AD symptoms.

Some studies suggest an association between iron overload and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the relationship between dietary iron intake and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains uncertain, as does the role of genetic loci on this association. The study involved 179,565 participants from UK Biobank, tracking incident atrial fibrillation (AF) cases. Iron intake was categorized into low, moderate, and high groups based on dietary surveys conducted from 2009 to 2012. The Cox regression model was used to estimate the risk of AF in relation to iron intake, assessing the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). It also examined the impact of 165 AF-related and 20 iron-related genetic variants on this association. Pathway enrichment analyses were performed using Metascape and FUMA. During a median follow-up period of 11.6 years, 6693 (3.97%) incident AF cases were recorded. A total of 35,874 (20.0%) participants had high iron intake. High iron intake was associated with increased risk of AF [HR: 1.13 (95% CI: 1.05, 1.22)] in a fully adjusted model. Importantly, there were 83 SNPs (11 iron-related SNPs) that could enhance the observed associations. These genes are mainly involved in cardiac development and cell signal transduction pathways. High dietary iron intake increases the risk of atrial fibrillation, especially when iron intake exceeds 16.95 mg. The association was particularly significant among the 83 SNPs associated with AF and iron, the individuals with these risk genes. Gene enrichment analysis revealed that these genes are significantly involved in cardiac development and cell signal transduction processes.

This study investigated the relationship between Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), sleep disorders, the consumption of some nutrients, and social development factors, focusing on gender differences in an unbalanced dataset from a Mexico City cohort. We used data balancing techniques like SMOTE and ADASYN after employing machine learning models like random forest and RPART to predict MetS. Random forest excelled, achieving significant, balanced accuracy, indicating its robustness in predicting MetS and achieving a balanced accuracy of approximately 87%. Key predictors for men included body mass index and family history of gout, while waist circumference and glucose levels were most significant for women. In relation to diet, sleep quality, and social development, metabolic syndrome in men was associated with high lactose and carbohydrate intake, educational lag, living with a partner without marrying, and lack of durable goods, whereas in women, best predictors in these dimensions include protein, fructose, and cholesterol intake, copper metabolites, snoring, sobbing, drowsiness, sanitary adequacy, and anxiety. These findings underscore the need for personalized approaches in managing MetS and point to a promising direction for future research into the interplay between social factors, sleep disorders, and metabolic health, which mainly depend on nutrient consumption by region.

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean diet is characterized by the predominance of the consumption of fruit, vegetables, cereals, nuts, and pulses; consumption of olive oil as the main source of fat; regular but moderate consumption of win; moderate consumption of fish, dairy products, eggs, and white meats; and low consumption of red meat as well as sugar and sugary products. In addition to the reported health benefits, the Mediterranean diet has also been widely recognized as a sustainable food pattern. The objective of this study was to understand the relationship between the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet of employees of the University of Porto and the relationship with the carbon footprint of their food consumption. METHODS: An observational, analytical study was carried out, through the analysis of food consumption data collected in the form of a survey in the previous 24 h inserted in the eAT24 software, as well as the analysis of sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health data collected in the questionnaire. The carbon footprint was calculated from the previous 24 h surveys using data available on a website, obtained in carbon dioxide equivalent per kilogram of food. Sociodemographic, eating habit, and lifestyle questions were selected to understand the relationship between these and adherence to the Mediterranean diet and the carbon footprint of food consumption. RESULTS: In total, 13.2% of the participants had a Mediterranean diet score equal to or greater than six, and the sample had an average food intake carbon footprint of 8146 ± 3081 CO2eq/Kg of food. A weak, statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.142, p = 0.006) was observed between Mediterranean diet adherence and the carbon footprint of food intake. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the participants had a low adherence to the Mediterranean diet, as well as a high carbon footprint of food intake when compared to other countries. People with higher scores for Mediterranean diet adherence have, on average, a higher carbon footprint from food consumption intake.

BACKGROUND: Regular exercise has been described to modify both the diversity and the relative abundance of certain bacterial taxa. To our knowledge, the effect of a cycling stage race, which entails extreme physiological and metabolic demands, on the gut microbiota composition and its metabolic activity has not been analysed. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this cohort study was to analyse the dynamics of faecal microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) content of professional cyclists over a Grand Tour and their relationship with performance and dietary intake. METHODS: 16 professional cyclists competing in La Vuelta 2019 were recruited. Faecal samples were collected at four time points: the day before the first stage (A); after 9 stages (B); after 15 stages (C); and on the last stage (D). Faecal microbiota populations and SCFA content were analysed using 16S rRNA sequencing and gas chromatography, respectively. A principal component analysis (PCA) followed by Generalised Estimating Equation (GEE) models were carried out to explore the dynamics of microbiota and SCFAs and their relationship with performance. RESULTS: Bifidobacteriaceae, Coriobacteriaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Sutterellaceae dynamics showed a strong final performance predictive value (r = 0.83, ranking, and r = 0.81, accumulated time). Positive correlations were observed between Coriobacteriaceae with acetate (r = 0.530) and isovalerate (r = 0.664) and between Bifidobacteriaceae with isobutyrate (r = 0.682). No relationship was observed between SCFAs and performance. The abundance of Erysipelotrichaceae at the beginning of La Vuelta was directly related to the previous intake of complex-carbohydrate-rich foods (r = 0.956), while during the competition, the abundance of Bifidobacteriaceae was negatively affected by the intake of simple carbohydrates from supplements (r = -0.650). CONCLUSIONS: An ecological perspective represents more realistically the relationship between gut microbiota composition and performance compared to single-taxon approaches. The composition and periodisation of diet and supplementation during a Grand Tour, particularly carbohydrates, could be designed to modulate gut microbiota composition to allow better performance.

(1) Background: Optimal dietary intake is integral to good health in people receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD). We investigated how dietary patterns, dietary adequacy and nutrient intake may change over time in people commencing PD. (2) Methods: Participants were attending the PD training unit for the commencement of peritoneal dialysis, aged ≥18 years and willing to complete food records. Misreporters were excluded from the analysis. Dietary intake was compared at PD commencement and at 12 months. Intake was also compared to reference standards. Dietary patterns were derived using principal component analysis. (3) Results: There were no significant changes between baseline and 12 months for grains, fruit, vegetables and meat. Dairy and added sugar intake was significantly lower (p = 0.01). The intake of energy and protein was adequate and did not change. There was a significant reduction in dietary phosphorus and calcium, and increased vitamin C intake. Three dietary patterns were identified: the 'Bread and Cereal' pattern; 'Milk and Potatoes' pattern; and the 'Semi Vegetarian' pattern. (4) Conclusions: In this longitudinal cohort study, the diet quality was suboptimal and there were limited changes in intake after the commencement of PD. Further exploration of how dietary patterns may impact outcomes and quality of life is warranted.

Cholesterol is a nutrient commonly found in the human diet. The relationship between dietary cholesterol, its sources, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is still a topic of debate. This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary cholesterol, its sources, and cardiovascular events in a Chinese population. The present study analyzed data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) cohort between 1991 and 2015. This study analyzed data from 3903 participants who were 40 years of age or older at baseline and had no history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or hypertension. During a median follow-up of 14 years, 503 cardiovascular disease events were identified through follow-up questionnaires administered every 2-3 years. The events included fatal and nonfatal coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and other cardiovascular disease deaths. Cox regression was used to estimate risk ratios (HR) for CVD events after adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors. It was discovered that sources of dietary cholesterol varied among different subgroups of the population. The top three sources of cholesterol among all participants were eggs, red meat, and seafood, accounting for 57.4%, 28.2%, and 9.0% of total daily cholesterol intake, respectively. The present study found that there was a significant association between total dietary cholesterol intake, and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (adjusted HR [95% CI]: total cholesterol (highest and lowest quartiles compared) 1.57 [1.17-2.11]). Cholesterol from poultry, seafood, and eggs was also significantly associated with a reduced risk of CVD (adjusted HR [95% CI]: poultry 0.18 [0.04-0.82], seafood 0.11 [0.02-0.54], and eggs 0.16 [0.03-0.73]). After adjusting for daily caloric intake, daily fat intake, and daily saturated fat intake, the previously observed association between red meat cholesterol and cardiovascular events (unadjusted HR [95% CI]: 0.44 [0.35-0.55]) was no longer statistically significant (adjusted HR [95% CI]: 0.21 [0.04-1.01]).

This study delves into the complex interrelations among nutrient intake, environmental exposures (particularly to heavy metals), and metabolic syndrome. Utilizing data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), machine learning techniques were applied to analyze associations in a cohort of 5719 participants, categorized into four distinct nutrient intake phenotypes. Our findings reveal that different nutrient intake patterns are associated with varying levels of heavy metal exposure and metabolic health outcomes. Key findings include significant variations in metal levels (Pb, Hg, Cd, Ni) across the clusters, with certain clusters showing heightened levels of specific metals. These variations were associated with distinct metabolic health profiles, including differences in obesity, diabetes prevalence, hypertension, and cholesterol levels. Notably, Cluster 3, characterized by high-energy and nutrient-rich diets, showed the highest levels of Pb and Hg exposure and had the most concerning metabolic health indicators. Moreover, the study highlights the significant impact of lifestyle habits, such as smoking and eating out, on nutrient intake phenotypes and associated health risks. Physical activity emerged as a critical factor, with its absence linked to imbalanced nutrient intake in certain clusters. In conclusion, our research underscores the intricate connections among diet, environmental factors, and metabolic health. The findings emphasize the need for tailored health interventions and policies that consider these complex interplays, potentially informing future strategies to combat metabolic syndrome and related health issues.

Feeding is an essential biological process for an organism's growth, reproduction, and survival. This assay aims to measure the food intake of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), an important parameter when studying the genetics of aging or metabolism. In most species, feeding is determined by measuring the difference between the amount of food provided and the amount left after a given time interval. The method presented here uses the same strategy to determine the feeding of C. elegans. It measures the amount of bacteria, the food source of C. elegans, cleared within 72 h. This method uses 96-well microtiter plates and has allowed the screening of hundreds of drugs for their ability to modulate food intake at a speed and depth not possible in other animal models. The strength of this assay is that it allows to measure feeding and lifespan simultaneously and directly measures the disappearance of food and, thus, is based on the same principles used for other organisms, facilitating species-to-species comparison.

BACKGROUND: Dietary diversity is an indicator of nutrient intake among the elderly. Previous researches have primarily examined dietary diversity and the risks with chronic and infectious disease and cognitive impairment, limited evidence shows the association between dietary diversity and the overall health status of specific populations with a heterogeneity analysis. This study aimed to probe the effects of dietary diversity on health status among Chinese older adults. METHODS: There were 5740 sample participants aged 65 and above selected from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, among which 3334 samples in 2018 wave and 2406 samples in 2011 wave. Dietary diversity was assessed by Dietary Diversity Score ranged from 0 to 9, the higher the score, the better dietary diversity. Health status was assessed into healthy, impaired and dysfunctional state by three indicators: Activities of Daily Living, Instrument Activities of Daily Living and Mini-Mental State Examination. Multinomial logistic regression was employed to assess the effects of dietary diversity on the health status among the elderly. Heterogeneity analysis between different groups by age was further discussed. RESULTS: Older adults with better dietary diversity are in better health status, the mean dietary diversity score for healthy group was higher than that of impaired and dysfunctional groups (In 2018 wave, the scores were 6.54, 6.26 and 5.92, respectively; and in 2011 wave, they were 6.38, 5.93 and 5.71, respectively). Heterogeneity analysis shows that the younger groups tend to have more diversified dietary and be in better health status. Dietary diversity was more significantly associated with health status of the younger elderly (OR, 1.22, 95% CI, 1.04-1.44, p < 0.05) than the older elderly (OR, 1.01, 95% CI, 0.37-2.78, p > 0.05) in 2018 wave; and in 2011 wave, dietary diversity was more significantly related to health status among the younger elderly (OR, 1.62, 95% CI, 1.26-2.08, p < 0.001) than the older elderly (OR, 0.08, 95%CI, 0.31-1.94, p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Better dietary diversity has positive effects on health status and is more significantly related to the younger elderly than the older elderly. So interventions including available dietary diversity assessment, variety of dietary assistance services in daily life, keeping nutrient digestion and absorption capacity for the venerable age might benefit to ensure the effects of dietary diversity on health status among older adults especially in maintaining intrinsic ability and physical function. In addition, healthy lifestyle should also be recommended.

BACKGROUND: Provision of feed is a major determinant of overall profitability in beef production systems, accounting for up to 75% of the variable costs. Thus, improving cattle feed efficiency, by way of determining the underlying genomic control and subsequently selecting for feed efficient cattle, provides a method through which feed input costs may be reduced. The objective of this study was to undertake gene co-expression network analysis using RNA-Sequence data generated from Longissimus dorsi and liver tissue samples collected from steers of two contrasting breeds (Charolais and Holstein-Friesian) divergent for residual feed intake (RFI), across two consecutive distinct dietary phases (zero-grazed grass and high-concentrate). Categories including differentially expressed genes (DEGs) based on the contrasts of RFI phenotype, breed and dietary source, as well as key transcription factors and proteins secreted in plasma were utilised as nodes of the gene co-expression network. RESULTS: Of the 2,929 DEGs within the network analysis, 1,604 were reported to have statistically significant correlations (≥ 0.80), resulting in a total of 43,876 significant connections between genes. Pathway analysis of clusters of co-expressed genes revealed enrichment of processes related to lipid metabolism (fatty acid biosynthesis, fatty acid ß-oxidation, cholesterol biosynthesis), immune function, (complement cascade, coagulation system, acute phase response signalling), and energy production (oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondrial L-carnitine shuttle pathway) based on genes related to RFI, breed and dietary source contrasts. CONCLUSIONS: Although similar biological processes were evident across the three factors examined, no one gene node was evident across RFI, breed and diet contrasts in both liver and muscle tissues. However within the liver tissue, the IRX4, NR1H3, HOXA13 and ZNF648 gene nodes, which all encode transcription factors displayed significant connections across the RFI, diet and breed comparisons, indicating a role for these transcription factors towards the RFI phenotype irrespective of diet and breed. Moreover, the NR1H3 gene encodes a protein secreted into plasma from the hepatocytes of the liver, highlighting the potential for this gene to be explored as a robust biomarker for the RFI trait in beef cattle.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity is becoming an increasingly serious public health challenge in the aging population. The impact of nutrients on multimorbidity remains to be determined and was explored using data from a UK cohort study. METHOD: Our research analysis is mainly based on the data collected by the United Kingdom Women's Cohort Study (UKWCS), which recruited 35,372 women aged 35-69 years at baseline (1995 to 1998), aiming to explore potential associations between diet and chronic diseases. Daily intakes of energy and nutrients were estimated using a validated 217-item food frequency questionnaire at recruitment. Multimorbidity was assessed using the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) through electronic linkages to Hospital Episode Statistics up to March 2019. Cox's proportional hazards models were used to estimate associations between daily intakes of nutrients and risk of multimorbidity. Those associations were also analyzed in multinomial logistic regression as a sensitivity analysis. In addition, a stratified analysis was conducted with age 60 as the cutoff point. RESULTS: Among the 25,389 participants, 7,799 subjects (30.7%) were confirmed with multimorbidity over a median follow-up of 22 years. Compared with the lowest quintile, the highest quintile of daily intakes of energy and protein were associated with 8% and 12% increased risk of multimorbidity respectively (HR 1.08 (95% CI 1.01, 1.16), p-linearity = 0.022 for energy; 1.12 (1.04, 1.21), p-linearity = 0.003 for protein). Higher quintiles of daily intakes of vitamin C and iron had a slightly lowered risk of multimorbidity, compared to the lowest quintile. A significantly higher risk of multimorbidity was found to be linearly associated with higher intake quintiles of vitamin B12 and vitamin D (p-linearity = 0.001 and 0.002, respectively) in Cox models, which became insignificant in multinomial logistic regression. There was some evidence of effect modification by age in intakes of iron and vitamin B1 associated with the risk of multimorbidity (p-interaction = 0.006 and 0.025, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight a link between nutrient intake and multimorbidity risk. However, there is uncertainty in our results, and more research is needed before definite conclusions can be reached.

This case-control study investigated the link between dietary branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and the risk and severity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We assessed dietary BCAA intake in 95 RA patients and 190 matched controls using a food frequency questionnaire. We also assessed the disease severity using the disease activity score 28 (DAS-28), ESR, VAS, morning stiffness, and tender and swollen joints. Higher BCAA intake, expressed as a percentage of total protein, was significantly associated with increased risk of RA for total BCAAs (OR 2.14, 95% CI 1.53-3.00, P < 0.001), leucine (OR 2.40, 95% CI 1.70-3.38, P < 0.001), isoleucine (OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.46-2.85, P < 0.001), and valine (OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.35-2.59, P < 0.001). These associations remained significant even after adjusting for potential confounders (P < 0.001). However, BCAA intake did not show any significant association with RA severity in either crude or multivariate models (P > 0.05). Our findings suggest that higher dietary BCAA intake may contribute to the development of RA, but further research is needed to confirm these observations and explore the underlying mechanisms.

A 40-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital by ambulance due to accidental ingestion of 100ml of 35% hydrogen peroxide. Although the patient suffered from frequent vomiting, abdominal distension, and abdominal pain, signs of peritonitis were not observed. An abdominal computed tomography examination demonstrated obvious gas images in the gastric wall and intrahepatic portal veins. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed mucosal redness, swelling, and erosion from the lower part of the esophagus to the duodenum. Portal venous gas and upper gastrointestinal mucosal injury due to accidental hydrogen peroxide ingestion were suspected. As the vital signs were stable and there were no signs peritoneal irritation or neurological symptoms, she was treated medically with vonoprazan, rebamipide, and sodium alginate. The next day, abdominal symptoms immediately improved and 3 days later, hepatic portal venous gas had disappeared on ultrasonography. She was discharged on the 5th day after admission. Two months later, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed improvement in inflammatory findings. We report a remarkable case of hepatic portal venous gas and upper gastrointestinal mucosal injury and elucidate the endoscopic findings associated with hydrogen peroxide ingestion.

Visfatin play an essential role in the central regulation of appetite in birds. This study aimed to determine role of intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of the visfatin on food intake and its possible interaction with neuropeptide Y (NPY) and nitric oxide system in neonatal broiler chicken. In experiment 1, neonatal chicken received ICV injection visfatin (1, 2 and 4 µg). In experiment 2, chicken received ICV injection of B5063 (NPY1 receptor antagonist 1.25 µg), visfatin (4 µg) and co-injection of the B5063 + Visfatin. In experiments 3-6, SF22 (NPY2 receptor antagonist 1.25 µg), SML0891 (NPY5 receptor antagonist 1.25 µg), L-NAME (nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, 100 nmol) and L-arginine (Precursor of nitric oxide, 200 nmol) were injected instead of B5063. Then the amount of cumulative food was measured at 30, 60 and 120 min after injection. Obtained data showed, injection visfatin (2 and 4 µg) increased food intake compared to control group (P < 0.05). Co-injection of the B5063 + Visfatin decreased visfatin-induced hyperphagia compared to control group (P < 0.05). Co-injection of the L-NAME + Visfatin amplified visfatin-induced hyperphagia compared to control group (P < 0.05). The result showed that visfatin has hyperphagic role and this effect mediates via NPY1 and nitric oxide system in neonatal chicken.

Sea turtle mortality is often related to materials that reach the coast from different anthropic activities worldwide. This study aimed to investigate whether sea turtle mortality was related to older marine problems, such as solid waste, or one of the largest oil spill accidents on the Brazilian coast, that occurred in 2019. We posed three questions: 1) Are there solid residues in the digestive tract samples, and which typology is the most abundant? 2) Can meso­ and macro-waste marine pollutants cause mortality? 3) Is the dark material found really oil? A total of 25 gastrointestinal content (GC) samples were obtained, of which 22 ingested waste of anthropogenic origin and 18 were necropsied. These 22 samples were obtained during or after the 2019 oil spill, of which 17 specimens were affected, making it possible to suggest oil ingestion with the cause of death in the animals that could be necropsied. Macroscopic data showed that the most abundant solid waste was plastic (76.05 %), followed by fabrics (12.18 %) and oil-like materials. However, chemical data confirmed only three specimens with oil levels ranging from remnants to high. It was possible to infer possible causes of death in 16 of the total 18 necropsied cases: Most deaths were due to respiratory arrest (62.5 %), followed by pulmonary edema (12.5 %), cachexia syndrome (12.5 %), circulatory shock (6.25 %), and head trauma (6.25 %), which may have been caused by contact with solid waste, oil, or both. The study showed that not all dark material found in the GCs of turtles killed in oiled areas is truly oil, and in this sense, a chemical analysis step to prove the evidence of oil must be added to international protocols.
