RESUMO

To address the challenges of repetitive and low-texture features in intraoral endoscopic images, a novel methodology for stitching panoramic half jaw images of the oral cavity is proposed. Initially, an enhanced self-attention mechanism guided by Time-Weighting concepts is employed to augment the clustering potential of feature points, thereby increasing the number of matched features. Subsequently, a combination of the Sinkhorn algorithm and Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) is utilized to maximize the count of matched feature pairs, accurately remove outliers and minimize error. Last, to address the unique spatial alignment among intraoral endoscopic images, a wavelet transform and weighted fusion algorithm based on dental arch arrangement in intraoral endoscopic images have been developed, specifically for use in the fusion stage of intraoral endoscopic images. This enables the local oral images to be precisely positioned along the dental arch, and seamless stitching is achieved through wavelet transformation and a gradual weighted fusion technique. Experimental results demonstrate that this method yields promising outcomes in panoramic stitching tasks for intraoral endoscopic images, achieving a matching accuracy of 84.6% and a recall rate of 78.4% in a dataset with an average overlap of 35%. A novel solution for panoramic stitching of intraoral endoscopic images is provided by this method.

This case report describes a 19-year-old woman with skeletal Class I crowding and an unsalvageable maxillary right central incisor. She visited our clinic with the chief complaint of mobility of the maxillary right central incisor due to a traffic accident. After extraction of the maxillary right central incisor, the space was closed orthodontically. All the maxillary right teeth were moved mesially with an elastic chain attached to a palatal lever arm which was connected to palatal temporary anchorage devices (TADs). After orthodontic treatment had been completed, the maxillary right lateral incisor and peg-shaped left lateral incisor were restored with a porcelain laminate veneer. The maxillary right canine was morphologically reshaped and built up with composite resin. Consequently, esthetically ideal occlusion and functional lateral guidance with uncontacted molars were obtained. These results show that mesial movement of the entire dental arch with TADs is a useful orthodontic treatment option in patients in whom the maxillary central incisor has been extracted.

Immediate function has become an accepted treatment modality for fixed restorations in completely edentulous jaws. The dental implants have gained immense popularity. A secure implant primary stability is positively associated with a successful implant integration and long term successful clinical outcome. The main aim of this study was to find the association between primary stability and bone density in implants placed in maxilla and mandible. A total of 1263 patients who had undergone implant placement from March 2020-March 2021 in Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai, India were chosen for the study. The primary stability and bone density of these patients were collected from the hospital records. The collected data was compiled, reviewed, tabulated in Microsoft Excel sheet and entered in SPSS software for statistical analysis. In the present study, the patient aged between 28 and 37 years had undergone more implant placement (31%) with male predilection (53%). The most commonly associated primary stability was found to be 30-40 Ncm (51.37%) predominantly with D2 type of bone density (52.69%). A Chi-squared statistical test was done for primary stability and bone density and the P was found to be 0.00 (Chi-squared P < 0.05, statistically significant). The most predominant bone density was D2 associated with primary stability of 30-40 Ncm. The association between bone density and primary stability was found to be statistically significant. The present study shows a strong relationship between bone density and primary implant stability.

OBJECTIVE: While mixed dentition space analysis is a common practice in pediatric dentistry, digital models created using an intraoral scanner are not as widely used in clinical settings. This preliminary study used a very small sample size with one reference model and aimed to (1) compare the accuracy of mixed dentition space analysis using a digital model obtained from an optical impression with that of conventional plaster model-based analysis and (2) assess inter-examiner differences. RESULTS: The space required for the mandibular permanent canine and premolars and arch length discrepancy were calculated using each model. The largest significant difference between plaster- and digital model-based analyses was identified when the right arch length discrepancy was considered (-0.49 mm; 95% confidence interval: -0.95-0.03); however, the value was considered clinically insignificant. Significant inter-examiner differences were observed for six items of the plaster model; however, no such differences were observed when using the digital model. In conclusion, digital model space analysis may have the same level of accuracy as conventional plaster model analysis and likely results in smaller inter-examiner differences than plaster model analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Information regarding the effect of tooth color under different light conditions on the accuracy of intraoral complete arch scanning is limited. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of color and ambient light conditions on the accuracy of mandibular complete arch scanning with an intraoral scanner (IOS) using a zirconia restoration model with different shades. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five mandible dentition models with zirconia restorations of different shades were fabricated by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM). The spectral reflectance and transmittance curves were collected with a spectrophotometer to determine color parameters (Rb, T, S+A, L*, a*, b*, C*, and h). Under 4 different lighting conditions: no light (ZL), natural light (NL), room light (RL), and chair light (CL), each model was scanned 10 times by using an IOS (TRIOS 3). Three-dimensional (3D) deviation analysis and a linear deviation analysis were performed for an accurate quantitative measurement of intraoral scanning. The multivariate test was used to determine significant differences in 3D deviation and linear deviation among groups. The multiple linear regression test was conducted to investigate the relevant independent factors of mean absolute 3D deviation. RESULTS: The 3D deviation analysis showed that the mean absolute 3D deviation of 3M2 model scanning was the lowest (P<.001). Moreover, under CL and RL, the accuracy results from the 3M2 model scan were demonstrated as significantly better than the tested scans under other light conditions (P=.021). The result of the linear deviation analysis indicated that the variation in distance was only significant between the bilateral canines (P=.032). Ambient light conditions, C*, and h were factors influencing mean absolute 3D deviation (R2=0.593, P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: Color change influenced the accuracy of intraoral mandibular complete arch scanning under different light conditions. This effect may be attributable to the interaction between the ambient light condition and color parameters such as C* and h.

INTRODUCTION: There is currently no consensus in the literature whether the aetiology of a Class II subdivision is dental, skeletal or both. The aim of this study was to identify and quantify skeletal and dental asymmetries in Class II subdivision malocclusions. METHODS: CBCTs from 33 Class II subdivision malocclusion patients were used to construct 3D volumetric label maps. Eighteen landmarks were identified. The original scan and associated 3D volumetric label map were mirrored. Registration of the original and mirrored images relative to the anterior cranial base, maxilla and mandible were performed. Surface models were generated, and 3D differences were quantified. Statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: Anterior cranial base registration showed significant differences for fossa vertical difference, fossa roll, mandibular yaw, mandibular lateral displacement and lower midline displacement. Regional registrations showed significant differences for antero-posterior (A-P) mandibular length, maxillary roll, A-P maxillary first molar position, maxillary first molar yaw and maxillary first molar roll. Class II subdivision patients also show an asymmetric mandibular length as well as an asymmetric gonial angle. Moderate correlations were found between the A-P molar relationship and fossa A-P difference, mandibular first molar A-P difference, maxillary first molar A-P difference and maxillary first molar yaw. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that Class II subdivisions can result from both significant skeletal and dental factors. Skeletal factors include a shorter mandible as well as posterior and higher displacement of the fossa on the Class II side, resulting in mandibular yaw. Dental factors include maxillary and mandibular first molar antero-posterior asymmetry.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the pre- and postorthodontic treatment volumetric changes of the oral cavity proper (OCP) in extraction and nonextraction patients and to identify influencing variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pre- and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed labial appliances and who satisfied the inclusion criteria were individually landmarked. Linear, angular, and volumetric measurements were determined. Descriptive statistics, repeated measure analyses of variance, correlations, and stepwise regression statistical analyses were applied. RESULTS: The CBCT scans of 54 patients who underwent the extraction of second premolars and/or extraction of second primary molars associated with agenic second premolars, and 59 nonextraction patients matched for crowding, were assessed. The mean age for both groups was 15 years. There was a statistically significant increase in the volume of the OCP for both the extraction and nonextraction groups, with the nonextraction group demonstrating a larger increase in the volume of the OCP. Gender, age, changes in mandibular and maxillary arch length, and changes in mandibular and maxillary intermolar width all influenced the change in the OCP volume. CONCLUSIONS: The volume of the OCP increased in growing patients with and without the extraction of the second premolars and/or extraction of second primary molars associated with agenic second premolars. Patients who did not have extractions as part of their orthodontic treatment demonstrated a greater overall increase in OCP volume.

This case report describes a 19-year-old man presented with a 5.7-mm deep overbite, Class II division 2 malocclusion with the right upper maxillary canine completely buccal ectopia, deviated midline in the upper arch, severe crowding and retroclination of the maxillary and mandibular incisors. The patient was treated with clear aligners to correct the Class II relationship and the deep overbite. A series of clear aligners were used to move bilateral maxillary molars distally with unilateral mini-screw anchorage. The final results showed that clear aligners with mini-screws could effectively achieve the required upper distal molar movement thanks to a reasonable design of the stages and anchorage. The treatment was completed in 19 months and the patient was satisfied with the treatment outcome in this context of mild to moderate Class II division 2 malocclusion.

This narrative review aims to study the accuracy of different intra-oral scanner (IOS) devices already available on the market. The accuracy emerged during in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo studies made with IOS devices during the scan of a full arch implant rehabilitation that have been analysed to evaluate which device may be the most suitable in this clinical situation. The literature review was performed by searching topics and keywords using the PubMed and Medline databases, for example, 'digital workflow', 'full arch', 'full arch implant rehabilitation' and 'accuracy of IOS'. Inclusion and exclusion criteria for studies were: correct IMRAD (introduction, methods, results and discussion) structure; article with clear and detailed objectives; consistency of the articles with the purpose of the review; two-year range from the year of publication of the article; reproducible materials and methods; and correct follow-up. Most of the intra-oral scanners employed in vitro provided acceptable accuracy (below a threshold of 150 µm). The main parameters identified for their influence on precision were interim plant distance, body scan design, scanning pattern and operator experience. Even though literature is limited, significant differences emerged between the different models of intra-oral scanners evaluated in the studies considered within this review.

Background and Objectives: According to the modified Williams theory, the shape of the maxillary central incisor corresponds to the shape of the maxillary alveolar ridge (dental arch) and the shape of the face. Moreover, the standards of beauty suggest that the center of the face of an individual with a full set of teeth should match the center of the maxillary and mandibular dental arches. The purpose of this study is to conduct a comparative cross-sectional study on the matching of the shape of the face, maxillary central incisor and maxillary dental arch as well as the matching of the midfacial line and dental arches in subjects with complete dentition. Materials and Methods: The study included 90 subjects of both sexes. The matching of the shape of the face and midfacial line, i.e., dental arches and maxillary incisors, was determined by analysing photographs, whereas the shape of the dental arch was determined by analysing plaster models. Results: No significant gender-related differences were found either in the shape of the maxillary central incisor that matched the shape of the maxillary dental arch (p = 0.349) or in the shape of the dental arch that matched the shape of the face (p = 0.697). However, a significant difference was noted in the shape of the teeth that matched the shape of the face (p = 0.043), which was more significantly impaired in men. In addition, the matching of the mid-face and the mid-dental arch was significantly greater in women (p = 0.016). Conclusions: The modified Williams theory was confirmed in most subjects, thus it can be considered a relevant guideline when determining the shape of teeth after their loss. The highest percentage of matching in both sexes was with the shape of the face and dental arch. There was no positive correlation between the middle of the maxillary and mandibular dental arch in most cases.

Abstract To evaluate the accuracy of complete arch scanning with multiple implant titanium scan bodies using laboratory scanners. A master model of an edentulous maxillary arch with 6 implants was fabricated. Titanium scan bodies were inserted into the model. Three laboratory scanners were used: D2000 (3Shape), Vinyl High Resolution (Smart Optics), and inEos X5 (Dentsply Sirona). The master model was consecutively scanned ten times using dental laboratory scanners (LS) without detaching and repositioning the scan bodies. Linear and angular accuracy between adjacent implants was measured using inspection software (Control X, Geomagic). The accuracy of the complete arch scans was calculated. Implant regions were defined as; parallel (R1: #24-26 and #16-14), angled (R2: #22-24 and #14-12), angled to occlusal plane (R3: #12-22), and cross-arch (R4: #16-26). The effect of LS and implant region on accuracy was compared using two-Way ANOVA (α=0.05). Significant greater linear distortion was noted in R4 (61.2±17.9µm) compared to R1 (23.4±15.5µm) and R2 (26±17.7µm) (p<0.01). Greater linear distortions were noted in R4 with D2000 (0.07±0.016 degrees) and Vinyl High Resolution (0.067±0.02 degrees) than inEos X5 (0.032±0.021 degrees) (p>0.05). Greater mean linear precisions were noted in R1 (9±8µm) and R3 (9.3±8.3µm) than R4 (12.6±10.3µm) (p<0.05). The highest linear precision was noted in D2000 (7.2±7.6µm) (p<0.05). The angular precision of D2000 (0.02±0.015 degrees) was the highest (p<0.01). The angular precisión of R4 (0.036±0.018 degrees) was the lowest (p<0.01). This study revealed that the trueness was affected by the implant region and the precision was affected by both LS and implant region.


Resumen Evaluar la precisión del escaneado de la arcada completa con cuerpos de escaneado de titanio de múltiples implantes utilizando escáneres de laboratorio. Se fabricó un modelo maestro de una arcada maxilar edéntula con 6 implantes. Se insertaron cuerpos de escaneo de titanio en el modelo. Se utilizaron tres escáneres de laboratorio: D2000 (3Shape), Vinyl High Resolution (Smart Optics) e inEos X5 (Dentsply Sirona). El modelo maestro se escaneó consecutivamente diez veces usando escáneres de laboratorio dental (LS) sin separar y reposicionar los cuerpos de escaneo. La precisión lineal y angular entre implantes adyacentes se midió utilizando un software de inspección (Control X, Geomagic). Se calculó la precisión de los escaneos completos del arco. Las regiones del implante se definieron como; paralelo (R1: #24-26 y #16-14), angulado (R2: #22-24 y #14-12), angulado al plano oclusal (R3: #12-22) y cruzado (R4: #16-26). El efecto de LS y la región del implante en la precisión se comparó mediante ANOVA de dos vías (α=0,05). PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of a novel scanning strategy-using two new intraoral scanner devices with different operators-on the full-arch scanning accuracy for a dentate maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two scanning strategies, a test and a control strategy, were used to produce full-arch impressions of the dentate maxilla of a study patient. Two intraoral scanning (IOS) devices were used. Five expert operators performed a total of 40 scans. The scan time was recorded for each. A reference model was obtained from the patient's maxillary arch with an analog impression. The model was later scanned with a high-precision laboratory scanner to create a digital reference model (DRM). The scanning accuracy was analyzed with 3D-analysis software using a root mean square (RMS) calculation method, and qualitative analysis was executed using machine learning software. RESULTS: The mean RMS result for the test strategy was 82.8 ± 16 µm compared to 81.5 ± 16 µm for the control strategy. The mean RMS results were 84.7 ± 15 µm for Primescan (PS) and 79.6 ± 17 µm for 3Shape (3S). As such, the scanning strategies and IOS devices did not influence the scanning accuracy. Yet, a significant difference was found when the two strategies' scanning times were compared (P = .001), as well as the IOS devices (P = .001). The operator was found to have no influence on the scanning strategy. CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of digital impressions is not influenced by different strategies, devices, or operators, in contrast with the scanning time, which is influenced by both strategies and devices.

This study aimed to compare the accuracy of full-arch digital implant impressions using seven different scanbodies and four intraoral scanners. A 3D-printed maxillary model with six implants and their respective multi-unit abutments was used for this study. Seven scanbodies (SB1, SB2, SB3, SB4, SB5, SB6, and SB7) and four intraoral scanners (Primescan®, Omnican®, Trios 3®, and Trios 4®) were assessed. Each combination group was scanned ten times and a dental lab scanner (D2000, 3Shape) was used as a reference. All scans were exported as STL files, imported into Convince software (3Shape) for alignment, and later into Blender software, where their 3D positions were analyzed using a Python script. The 3D deviation, angular deviation, and linear distance between implants #3 and #14 were also measured. Accuracy was measured in terms of "trueness" (scanbody 3D deviation between intraoral scan and desktop scan). Kruskal-Wallis followed by the Bonferroni correction was used to analyze the data (⍺ = .05). The study found statistically significant differences in digital impression accuracy among the scanners and scanbodies (p<0.001). When comparing different intraoral scanners, the Primescan system showed the smallest 3D deviation (median 110.59 µm) and differed statistically from the others, while Trios 4 (median 122.35 µm) and Trios 3 (median 130.62 µm) did not differ from each other (p = .284). No differences were found in the linear distance between implants #3 and #14 between Trios 4, Primescan, and Trios 3 systems. When comparing different scanbodies, the lowest median values for 3D deviation were obtained by SB2 (72.27µm) and SB7 (93.31µm), and they did not differ from each other (p = .116). The implant scanbody and intraoral scanner influenced the accuracy of digital impressions on completely edentulous arches.

Unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCCLP) is one of the most severe clinical subphenotypes among nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P), that complicates surgical repair operations. Presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) is a technique used to reshape the nose, lip and alveolar bone of infants with UCCLP before surgery (the modified Mohler rotation advancement cheiloplasty and two flap palatoplasty), with the potential to facilitate surgical repair. However, the effectiveness of PNAM treatment is still a matter of debate. In this paper, the 3Shape scanning system and 3dMD stereophotography were used to assess the short-term and long-term effects of PNAM treatment on the dental arch morphology and nasolabial features of patients with UCCLP, respectively. The findings indicated that PNAM treatment negatively affects both short-term and long-term dental arch shape compared to the treatment without PNAM, particularly in terms of limiting the transverse width of the maxillary canine-to-midline. Regarding the nasal and labial symmetry, PNAM improves the symmetry of the nasal alae in patients over 7 years old and the symmetry of the lip in patients under 7 years old. Moreover, UCCLP patients who received PNAM treatment exhibited a shorter and wider shape of the nostril on the cleft side compared to those without PNAM treatment. In clinical practice, the multidisciplinary team should carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of the outcomes of PNAM treatment when treating infants with cleft lip and palate.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the mandibular arch shape and the vertical skeletal pattern in growing patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 73 Caucasian patients (33 males and 40 females; mean age 9.4) were retrospectively enrolled from a pool of patients treated in chronological order at the Department of Orthodontics, University of Foggia, Italy, from April 2018 to December 2021. Each patient received a laterolateral radiograph and a digital scan of the dental arch. Eight cephalometric parameters (lower gonial angle, intermaxillary angle, divergence angle, Wits index, Jarabak ratio, OP-MP angle, PP-OP angle, and ANB) and five dental measurements (posterior mandibular arch width, anterior mandibular arch width, mandibular occlusal angle, posterior width on distobuccal molar cusps, and molar angle) were analyzed and then compared. A Spearman's rho correlation test between the cephalometric measurements and the dental measurements was performed. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: A negative statistically significant correlation was found between the Jarabak ratio and the intermolar angle; a statistically significant correlation was also observed between the Wits index, the posterior mandibular width, and the occlusal mandibular angle; the ANB angle and the occlusal mandibular angle; the intermaxillary angle (PP-PM) and the mandibular occlusal angle, posterior mandibular width on the disto-vestibular cusp, and the intermolar angle; and the OP-MP angle and mandibular occlusal angle and the posterior mandibular width on the disto-vestibular cusp. Conclusions: The mandibular arch form may be related to certain predisposing features in craniofacial morphology, such as jaw divergence, the Jarabak ratio, and the intermaxillary angle.

Background and Objectives: Orthodontics is a field that has seen significant advancements in recent years, with technology playing a crucial role in improving diagnosis and treatment planning. The study aimed to implement artificial intelligence to predict the arch width as a preventive measure to avoid future crowding in growing patients or even in adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment as a tool for orthodontic diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Four hundred and fifty intraoral scan (IOS) images were selected from orthodontic patients seeking treatment in private orthodontic centers. Real inter-canine, inter-premolar, and inter-molar widths were measured digitally. Two of the main machine learning models were used: the Python programming language and machine learning algorithms, implementing the data on k-nearest neighbor and linear regression. Results: After the dataset had been implemented on the two ML algorithms, linear regression and k-nearest neighbor, the evaluation metric shows that KNN gives better prediction accuracy than LR does. The resulting accuracy was around 99%. Conclusions: it is possible to leverage machine learning to enhance orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning by predicting linear dental arch measurements and preventing anterior segment malocclusion.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the relative contributions of genetic and environmental influences on variation in dental arch form in individuals who have largely completed their craniofacial growth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The subjects of this study comprised dental casts of 50 monozygotic twins and 24 dizygotic twins from the collection of records of twins housed at the Adelaide Dental School, Australia. The subjects were of Western European descent, with an average age of 20.93 ±â€…5.58 years. Dental casts were scanned using a 3D scanner to analyse the dental arch form. Landmark-based inter-arch and intra-arch measurements were performed. Structural equation modelling was employed to analyse the quantitative data using the normal assumptions of the twin model. RESULTS: Genetic modelling revealed that additive genetic and unique environmental factors best explained the observed variation for all occlusal traits measured, except for mandibular intercanine width. High heritability was observed for most intra-arch occlusal variables (0.61-0.85) including the maxillary and mandibular intercanine and intermolar widths, arch depth and perimeter. In contrast, moderate heritability was found for inter-arch occlusal variables (0.52-0.59) such as overjet and overbite. Sexual dimorphism was evident, with males displaying larger posterior arch width than females (P < 0.05). LIMITATIONS: Our sample was limited to individuals of Western European ancestry. CONCLUSION: The predominant source of occlusal variation within this group of Australian twins of Western European descent was controlled by genetic effects, and most were highly heritable. Generally, intra-arch occlusal variables showed greater heritability compared with inter-arch occlusal variables.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to compare the trueness and precision of five intraoral scanners (Emerald S, iTero Element 5D, Medit i700, Primescan, and Trios 4) and two indirect digitization techniques for both teeth and soft tissues on fresh mandibular and maxillary cadaver jaws. METHODS: The maxilla and mandible of a fully dentate cadaver were scanned by the ATOS industrial scanner to create a master model. Then, the specimens were scanned eight times by each intraoral scanner (IOS). In addition, 8 polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) impressions were made and digitized with a Medit T710 desktop scanner. Stone models were then poured and again scanned with the desktop scanner. All IOS, PVS, and stone models were compared to the master model to calculate the mean absolute surface deviation for mandibular teeth, maxillary teeth, and palate. RESULTS: For mandibular teeth, the PVS trueness was only significantly better than the Medit i700 (p < 0.001) and Primescan (p < 0.05). In maxillary teeth, the PVS trueness was significantly better than all IOSs (p < 0.05-0.001); the stone trueness was significantly better than Emerald S (p < 0.01), Medit i700 (p < 0.001) and Primescan (p < 0.01). In the palate, PVS and stone trueness were significantly lower than the iTero Element 5D (p < 0.01) and Trios 4 (p < p < 0.01). Stone trueness was significantly lower than the Medit i700 (p < 0.05). The precision in the palate was significantly lower for PVS and stone than for Emerald S (p < 0.01, p < 0.05), iTero Element 5D (p < 0.01, p < 0.01), Primescan (p < 0.001, p < 0.001), and Trios 4 (p < 0.001, p < 0.01). Significant differences in trueness between the IOSs were observed only in the mandibular teeth. The Medit i700 performed worse than Emerald S (p < 0.01) and iTero Element 5D (p < 0.01). For mandibular teeth, the Medit i700 was significantly more precise than Primescan (p < 0.01) and the Emerald S (p < 0.05). The Trios 4 was significantly less precise than Emerald S (p < 0.05). The precision of Medit i700 was significantly worse than iTero Element 5D (p < 0.01) for maxillary teeth, as well as the Primescan (p < 0.01) and Trios 4 (p < 0.05) for the palate. CONCLUSIONS: In general, indirectly digitized models from PVS impressions had higher trueness than IOS for maxillary teeth; precision between the two methods was similar. IOS was more accurate for palatal tissues. The differences in trueness and precision for mandibular teeth between the various techniques were negligible. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: All investigated IOSs and indirect digitization could be used for complete arch scanning in mandibular and maxillary dentate arches. However, direct optical digitization is preferable for the palate due to the low accuracy of physical impression techniques for soft tissues.

PURPOSE: This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of generation change on accuracy of IOSs on full-arch scans and the inter-operator reliability. METHODS: In this study, 6 different IOS were tested: 3Shape Trios 3 (20.1.2.), 3Shape Trios 4 (20.1.1.), Medit i500 (2.3.6.), Medit i700 (2.4.6.), Planmeca Emerald (6.0.1.) and Planmeca Emerald S (6.0.1.). Eighteen dental students, inexperienced in scanning, took part in this study as operators. Each operator made 10 digital impressions; altogether, 30 impressions were made by each scanner. The 30 STL files were imported to the Geomagic Control X program, where they were compared to a reference STL file; the surface point's deviation of the full arch and the distance between the second molars' distobuccal cusps were measured, the inter-operator reliability was also investigated. RESULTS: A significant increase in accuracy was found between Trios 3 and 4 in the case of both parameters and between Medit i500 and i700 in the case of full arch. There was no significant difference between Planmeca generations. In case of the inter-operator reliability no significant difference was detected. CONCLUSION: Within this current study's limitation, it can be concluded that surface digitalization's accuracy can be modified with generation changes and that digital technology is less technique sensitive than traditional impression taking.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a new post-processing strategy that utilizes an auxiliary device to adjust intraoral scans and improve the accuracy of 3D models of complete-arch dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An edentulous resin model with 6 dental implants was prepared. An auxiliary device, consisting of an opaque base and artificial landmarks, was fabricated and mounted onto the resin model. Twenty intraoral scans (raw scans) were taken using this setup. A new post-processing strategy was proposed to adjust the raw scans using reverse engineering software (verified group). Additionally, ten conventional gypsum casts were duplicated and digitized using a laboratory scanner. The linear and angular trueness and precision of the models were evaluated and compared. The effect of the proposed strategy on the accuracy of complete-arch intraoral scans was analyzed using one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: The linear trueness (29.7 µm) and precision (24.8 µm) of the verified group were significantly better than the raw scans (46.6 µm, 44.7 µm) and conventional casts (51.3 µm, 36.5 µm), particularly in cross-arch sites. However, the angular trueness (0.114°) and precision (0.085°) of the conventional casts were significantly better than both the verified models (0.298°, 0.168°) and the raw scans (0.288°, 0.202°). CONCLUSIONS: The novel post-processing strategy is effective in enhancing the linear accuracy of complete-arch implant IO scans, especially in cross-arch sites. However, further improvement is needed to eliminate the angular deviations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Errors generated from intraoral scanning in complete edentulous arches exceed the clinical threshold. The elimination of stitching errors in the raw scans particularly in the cross-arch sites, through the proposed post-processing strategy would enhance the accuracy of complete-arch implant prostheses.
