PURPOSE: This meta-analysis aimed to review the safety and efficacy of topical cyclosporine A (CsA) and topical tacrolimus in allergic eye disease. METHODS: A systematic search identified thirteen studies and a total of 445 patients for inclusion, making this the largest meta-analysis published on the subject. The current review was performed in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). RESULTS: Thirteen randomized control trials were included in the meta-analysis. Eleven studies used CsA as the treatment, and two used Tacrolimus. In total, 445 participants were included, of whom 76.6% were male. The mean age of participants across the included studies was 14 years. All studies reported clinical signs as evaluated by an examining clinician. Signs were usually assessed by anatomical region, with the most common regions being the conjunctiva and the cornea, and the most common signs assessed were hyperemia and papillae. Three studies accounted for more than 50% of the meta-analysis's weight. Effect size (d) ranged from - 2.37 to - 0.03, negative values favoring immunomodulators. Fixed Effect Meta-Analysis returned an SMD of - 0.81 (95% CI [- 0.98, - 0.65]). However, there was significant heterogeneity (I2 = 61%, Qw = 30.76) in the outcome measure (P = 0.0021); therefore, a random-effect meta-analysis was also completed in which the pooled SMD was - 0.98 (95% CI [- 1.26, - 0.69], τ2 = 0.16). CONCLUSIONS: This study affirms the current scientific community's stance that immunomodulators effectively treat clinical signs, including blepharitis, conjunctival hyperemia, edema, papillae, and corneal damage in severe ocular allergic disease.

RESUMO

A novel species of the genus Moraxella was isolated from an ocular swab from a cow with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. 16S rRNA gene sequencing suggested this species was Moraxella bovis (99.59 % nucleotide identity). Average nucleotide identity was calculated using a draft whole genome sequence of this strain compared with type strains of closely related Moraxella species and results established that it represents a new species. The genome size was 2 006 474 nucleotides and the G+C content was 42.51 mol%. The species could not be identified by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry using a commercial database, confirming the novelty of the strain. We propose the name Moraxella oculi sp. nov. for this new species. The type strain is Tifton1T and has been deposited into the American Type Culture Collection (TSD-373T) and the National Collection of Type Cultures (NCTC), UK Health Security Agency (NCTC 14942T).

BACKGROUND: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) are complex and rare diseases. Thus, their diagnosis and treatment are often a challenge. OBJECTIVE: Discussion on the epidemiology, new pathogenetic concepts, interesting clinical findings, diagnostic possibilities and new treatment options and their side effects in severe ocular allergies. Analysis of the presentation of VKC in the internet. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Evaluation of recent review articles, original publications, and case reports on the topics of VKC and AKC over the past 5 years. RESULTS: Ocular allergies have significantly increased over the last decades. Recent concepts discussed in the pathogenesis of VKC and AKC are the role of the local and gut microbiome as well as the influence of neuroinflammation. Keratoconus is significantly more common in patients with VKC and AKC compared to the normal population. It is associated with faster progression and a more severe course of disease. A conjunctival provocation test is only rarely necessary in the diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis. Treatment of atopic dermatitis with dupilumab, an interleukin 4 receptor alpha (IL-4Ra) antagonist, can cause ocular side effects. Unfortunately, information available on the internet for patients and parents on the topic of VKC is sometimes dangerously incorrect. CONCLUSION: From the abovementioned new pathogenetic concepts, preventive and personalized treatment options could be developed in the future. Keratoconus in AKC/VKC must be recognized and treated early. Official guidelines are now available for a standardized conjunctival provocation test in the diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis. The unwanted ocular side effects of dupilumab are often difficult to discriminate from the actual underlying AKC and respond well to anti-inflammatory treatment. Patients with VKC must be informed about the incorrect information on the internet regarding their disease.

Caterpillars can damage human health, including visual acuity, as a result of penetration of the setae into the eye or their layout on the eye tissue. However, the path of setae movement in the eye remains unclear. In this study, a 43-year-old woman was injured in the left eye by a caterpillar. Other than rubbing her eye, the patient did not attempt any type of treatment, and she visited our outpatient clinic 5 days after the accident. The patient's left eyelid was markedly swollen, with a visual acuity of 1.0 in the right eye and only 0.04 in the left eye. Images of the setae in the eye were taken using an oil lens microscope, which showed clearly their detailed characteristics. The setae were removed from the eye as much as possible. Topical eyedrops and oral steroids were used to reduce the inflammation. Vitritis and retinitis occurred at the 6-month follow-up and was classified as ophthalmia nodosa by the ophthalmologist. Before we did our study, some ophthalmologists believed that setae moved forward; however, we found that setae in the eye moved in a disorderly fashion. We also note that all setae should be removed. This case demonstrates that caterpillar setae in the eye move in a disorderly fashion and eventually caused ophthalmia nodosa.

Arthrinium phaeospermum is the major pathogen responsible for the significant stem disease "blight" in B. pervariabilis × D. grandis. The interacting proteins of the key pathogenic factor ApCtf1ß, BDUbc and BDSKL1, have previously been obtained by two-hybrid, BiFC, GST pull-down yeast assays. However, the functions of these interacting proteins remain unknown. This study successfully obtained transgenic plants overexpressing BDUbc, BDSKL1, and BDUbc + BDSKL1 via Agrobacterium-mediated gene overexpression. qRT-PCR analysis revealed significantly increased expression levels of BDUbc and BDSKL1 in the transgenic plants. After infection with the pathogenic spore suspension, the disease incidence and severity index significantly decreased across all three transgenic plants, accompanied by a marked increase in defense enzyme levels. Notably, the co-transformed plant, OE-BDUbc + BDSKL1, demonstrated the lowest disease incidence and severity index among the transgenic variants. These results not only indicate that BDUbc and BDSKL1 are disease-resistant genes, but also that these two genes may exhibit a synergistic enhancement effect, which further improves the resistance to blight in Bambusa pervariabilis × Dendrocalamopsis grandis.

AIMS: To identify the incidence, prevalence and risk factors of exposure keratopathy (EK) among critically ill patients. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis, in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 Statement. METHODS: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), Weipu Database (VIP) and WanFang Database were systematically searched from inception to June 2022. Observational studies that reported EK among paediatric and adult critically ill patients were screened and included original articles based on the inclusion criteria. Two reviewers independently completed data extraction and quality assessments. Subgroup analysis investigated potential causes of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Of the 4508 studies identified, 23 studies involving 3519 subjects were included. The pooled prevalence of EK was 34.0%, and the pooled incidence rate of EK was 23.0%. Risk factors associated with EK in critically ill patients included lagophthalmos, chemosis, eye blinks <5 times per minute, mechanical ventilation, sedation, lower Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score and higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score. CONCLUSION: This review shows that EK rates are high in critically ill patients and are influenced by multiple factors. Medical staff should pay more attention to EK in critically ill patients, conduct professional evaluations and implement targeted eye care protocols to reduce its occurrence. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study shows the frequency of and multiple risk factors for EK in critically ill patients, which provides evidence-based guidance for nurses to evaluate the risk of EK in critically ill patients and take appropriate precautions to reduce the risk. PURPOSE: Chronic keratoconjunctivitis is a rare presentation of autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 1 (APS-1) during the first year of life. Herein, We report a case of a 10-month-old baby girl with chronic bilateral keratoconjunctivitis, corneal scarring and neovascularization that was treated initially with topical immunosuppressants. METHODS: Detailed ophthalmological assessment followed by molecular testing using whole exome sequencing. RESULTS: In addition to the severe chronic bilateral keratoconjunctivitis, corneal scarring and neovascularization, patient weight was found to be low than 10th percentile. Further genetic testing revealed autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene variant that was only reported once in the literature confirming the diagnosis of APS-1. Further workup detected hypoparathyroidism that was treated with calcium supplementation. CONCLUSION: Our case represents the importance of multidisciplinary services and highlights the role of genetic testing in diagnosing such syndromic cases. We reviewed previous reports and found that available treatment for ocular involvement is usually nonsatisfactory; however, early detection and referral by ophthalmologists could result in treating previously undetected endocrine disorders that can be life threatening if left untreated.

OBJECTIVE: Patients who are intubated and sedated are at risk for developing exposure keratopathy, which can lead to permanent vision loss. This retrospective study assesses the incidence of exposure keratopathy (EK) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients before and after implementation of an EK Prevention Order Set. METHODS: At one tertiary care hospital (Bronx, NY), an "Exposure Keratopathy Prevention Order Set" was implemented to ameliorate this risk which included the application of white petrolatum-mineral oil lubricating ointment every 6 hours in both eyes. This retrospective chart review study analyzed the incidence of EK diagnosis before and after implementation of this EK Prevention Order Set. Patients who were on mechanical ventilation at the time of ophthalmology consult request between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, were included. Ophthalmology consult notes of patients with EK diagnosis were reviewed for details regarding the consult request, examination findings, diagnosis, and treatment plan. RESULTS: There were 247 and 361 ventilated ICU patients before and after the order set, respectively. The number of ophthalmology consults decreased slightly after the order set from 15 of 247 to 20 of 361 ventilated patients. In addition, the rate of EK among ventilated patients decreased from 4.5% (11 of 247 patients over 151 days) to 2.2% (8 of 361 patients over 212 days; P =0.154) with a risk ratio of 0.50 (95% CI 0.20-1.22). CONCLUSION: The number of patients diagnosed with EK trended down after implementation of the EK Prevention Order Set.

PURPOSE: To investigate the virucidal effects of a polyvinyl alcohol iodine, Saniode, against 16 types of human mastadenovirus (HAdV) causing ophthalmic, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, and systemic infections. STUDY DESIGN: Laboratory investigation METHODS: Fifty microliters of Saniode were exposed to 10 µL each containing HAdV virus stock solution of 1 × 106 copies/µL of HAdV-1, -2, -3, -4, 5, -6, -7, -8, -11, -37, -53, -54, -56, -64, -81, and -85 for 10 s, 30 s, 1 min, and 3 min. After neutralization with 0.5% sodium thiosulfate, the mixture was diluted by ten-fold serial dilution and inoculated into 24 wells containing confluent A549 cell monolayers. Virucidal effects were calculated relative to the positive control on days 7-10 and observed until 30 days post-infection. RESULTS: Saniode satisfied the EN-14476 criterion for virucidal effects (>99.99%) for all HAdV types at all exposure times, including at 10 s on days 7 to 10 post-infection. All types of HAdVs that reacted for > 1 min achieved 99.99% reduction, including after 30 days. CONCLUSION: Saniode displayed virucidal effects against all tested HAdV types. Currently, with no specific medication available for HAdVs in ocular infection, this could be an option to prevent the spread of keratoconjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: To clarify the ocular surface features of patients with recent history of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) and the relation between corneal dendritic cells (DCs) and ocular discomfort. METHODS: Normal controls (NC) and dry eye (DE) patients without EKC were recruited. Patients with recent EKC history (onset >4 weeks, but <20 weeks) were recruited as EKC + DE group (with dry eye) or EKC-DE group (without dry eye). Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, tear film parameters including lipid layer thickness, first tear break-up time (fBUT), average tear break-up time (aBUT), tear meniscus height and Schirmer I test, meibomian gland parameters, and in vivo corneal confocal microscopy were evaluated. RESULTS: 50 subjects in the NC group, 83 patients in the DE group, 76 patients in the EKC + DE group, and 38 patients in the EKC-DE group were included. Compared with the NC, DE, and EKC-DE groups, the EKC + DE group represented higher OSDI, lid margin, and meibum score (p < 0.05). In the EKC + DE group, the tear volume (10.5 ± 3.7 mm) was significantly higher than in the DE group (8.1 ± 2.8 mm, p < 0.001). The DC density in the EKC + DE group (29.98 ± 15.38 cells/image) was significantly higher than in NC, DE, and EKC-DE groups (4.68 ± 4.05 cells/image) (p < 0.001). The DC density was positively correlated with OSDI, lid margin, and meibum score (all p < 0.01) while inversely correlated with fBUT, aBUT (all p < 0.001) in the EKC + DE group. CONCLUSIONS: Corneal DC density significantly correlates to ocular discomfort and tear film instability in patients with recent EKC history who suffer from DE without aqueous tear deficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Since early January 2017, a new measles outbreak in Italy has been observed. The aim of the study was to compare features between adults and children measles cases and evaluate the effect of steroid treatment on the above parameters. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter, descriptive study was performed. We analyzed all patients admitted to the Department of Public Health and Infectious Diseases, Sapienza University, Rome and Latina, from January 2017 to December 2017 and discharged with diagnosis of measles. RESULTS: We identified 113 patients discharged with the diagnosis of measles infection cases of which 59 adults and 54 children (≤16 years). In adult population 32 patients (54 %) were males, with a median age of 30.5 years old and all unvaccinated (100 %). Keratoconjunctivitis 30 (50 %) was the most frequent complication. In pediatric population 27 (50 %) patients were males, with a median age of 3 years old. Information on measles vaccination status was available for only 21 (38.8 %) of cases. Keratoconjunctivitis 40 (74 %) was the most frequent complication. Analyzing the differences between adult and pediatric patients we found that children were significantly more likely to have keratoconjunctivitis and diarrhea as complications than adults in which the rate of thrombocytopenia and hepatitis was highest. Thirty-nine adult subjects (66 %) have been treated with systemic corticosteroids. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients differ from adults in complications and liver involvement. Regarding steroids use, although there is no clear indication of steroid use during measles, there is no evidence of a worse outcome in our cases series.

Importance: Pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis (PBKC) is a chronic, sight-threatening inflammatory ocular surface disease. Due to the lack of unified terminology and diagnostic criteria, nonspecific symptoms and signs, and the challenge of differentiation from similar ocular surface disorders, PBKC may be frequently unrecognized or diagnosed late. Objective: To establish a consensus on the nomenclature, definition, and diagnostic criteria of PBKC. Design, Setting, and Participants: This quality improvement study used expert panel and agreement applying the non-RAND modified Delphi method and open discussions to identify unified nomenclature, definition, and definitive diagnostic criteria for PBKC. The study was conducted between September 1, 2021, and August 14, 2022. Consensus activities were carried out through electronic surveys via email and online virtual meetings. Results: Of 16 expert international panelists (pediatric ophthalmologists or cornea and external diseases specialists) chosen by specific inclusion criteria, including their contribution to scientific leadership and research in PBKC, 14 (87.5%) participated in the consensus. The name proposed was "pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis," and the agreed-on definition was "Pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis is a frequently underdiagnosed, sight-threatening, chronic, and recurrent inflammatory eyelid margin disease associated with ocular surface involvement affecting children and adolescents. Its clinical spectrum includes chronic blepharitis, meibomitis, conjunctivitis, and corneal involvement ranging from superficial punctate keratitis to corneal infiltrates with vascularization and scarring." The diagnostic criteria included 1 or more suggestive symptoms accompanied by clinical signs from 3 anatomical regions: the eyelid margin, conjunctiva, and cornea. For PBKC suspect, the same criteria were included except for corneal involvement. Conclusions and Relevance: The agreements on the name, definition, and proposed diagnostic criteria of PBKC may help ophthalmologists avoid diagnostic confusion and recognize the disease early to establish adequate therapy and avoid sight-threatening complications. The diagnostic criteria rely on published evidence, analysis of simulated clinical cases, and the expert panel's clinical experience, requiring further validation with real patient data analysis.

RESUMO

Artificial intelligence (AI) was developed to distinguish cattle by their muzzle patterns and identify early cases of disease, including infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). It was tested on 870 cattle in four locations, with 170 developing IBK. The AI identified 169 of the 170 cases prior to their identification by veterinarians, and another 17 cases that remained free of IBK signs (sensitivity = 99.4%, specificity = 97.6%). These results indicate the AI can detect emerging IBK cases by muzzle images very early in the disease process and be used as an intervention tool in the prevention of IBK outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis are found in the Southern hemisphere. Our purpose was to investigate the first outbreak of microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in Japan among healthy, immunocompetent soccer players from the same team during a 1-month period. CASE PRESENTATION: This study is an observational case series. The medical records were analyzed for five cases with microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis who presented within September 2022. All five cases were males between 28 and 36 years old. These previously healthy individuals belonged to the same football team. Their eyes were considered susceptible to contaminated water or dirt from the turf at game and practice sites. All cases involved unilateral conjunctivitis, with scattered round white lesions that showed positive fluorescein staining in the corneal epithelium. All cases experienced diminution of vision in the affected eye. In three cases, direct smears showed spores of approximately 2-3 µm in diameter. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of corneal scrapes revealed partial amplification of microsporidial 18 S ribosomal RNA gene in four cases. Sequences of PCR products from all four cases showed 100% identity with strains of Vittaforma corneae previously reported from an outbreak in Singapore. All cases were treated with topical therapy, including voriconazole, fluorometholone, and levofloxacin. Four eyes underwent corneal scraping. After treatment, all eyes healed without residual opacities. CONCLUSIONS: Only a few sporadic case reports of this disease have previously been reported in Japan. We detected V. corneae in our case series, representing what appears to be the first outbreak of microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in Japan. Exposure to contaminated water or soil, in addition to inadequate sanitary facilities, represents a potential source of infection. Further investigations to clarify the characteristics of microsporidia seem warranted.

In this survey, the symptomatic leaves of Clivia miniata were collected from a greenhouse in Karaj city of Iran. The isolation and morphological investigation showed Scytalidium-like fungus associated with leaf blight symptom. The phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer along with partial sequences of rDNA large subunit and translation elongation factor 1-α (tef-1α) genomic regions confirmed the identification of the recovered isolate as Neoscytalidium dimidiatum. The pycnidial morph of the fungus didn't observe both in vitro and in vivo. The pathogenicity test on C. miniata and C. nobilis was also conducted to fulfill the Koch's postulates. To our Knowledges, this is the first report of N. dimidiatum causing leaf blight disease on C. miniata and C. nobilis worldwide, as well as these host plants are new for N. dimidiatum in the world.

Background: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a disease affecting wheat spikes caused by some Fusarium species and leads to cases of severe yield reduction and seed contamination. Identifying resistance genes/QTLs from wheat germplasm may help to improve FHB resistance in wheat production. Methods: Our study evaluated 205 elite winter wheat cultivars for FHB resistance. A high-density 90K SNP array was used for genotyping the panel. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) from cultivars from three different environments was performed using a mixed linear model (MLM). Results: Sixty-six significant marker-trait associations (MTAs) were identified (P < 0.001) on fifteen chromosomes that explained the phenotypic variation ranging from 5.4 to 11.2%. Some important new MTAs in genomic regions involving FHB resistance were found on chromosomes 2A, 3B, 5B, 6A, and 7B. Six MTAs at 92 cM on chromosome 7B were found in cultivars from two different environments. Moreover, there were 11 MTAs consistently associated with diseased spikelet rate and diseased rachis rate as pleiotropic effect loci and D_contig74317_533 on chromosome 5D was novel for FHB resistance. Eight new candidate genes of FHB resistance were predicated in wheat in this study. Three candidate genes, TraesCS5D02G006700, TraesCS6A02G013600, and TraesCS7B02G370700 on chromosome 5DS, 6AS, and 7BL, respectively, were perhaps important in defending against FHB by regulating intramolecular transferase activity, GTP binding, or chitinase activity in wheat, but further validation in needed. In addition, a total of five favorable alleles associated with wheat FHB resistance were discovered. These results provide important genes/loci for enhancing FHB resistance in wheat breeding by marker-assisted selection.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a global cereal disease caused by a complex of Fusarium species. Both Fusarium graminearum and F. asiaticum are the causal agents of FHB in China. F. asiaticum is the predominant species in the Middle-Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River (MLRYR) and southwest China. Therefore, detecting F. asiaticum in a timely manner is crucial for controlling the disease and preventing mycotoxins from entering the food chain. Here, we combined rapid genomic DNA extraction, recombinase polymerase amplification, Cas12a cleavage, and lateral flow detection techniques to develop a method for the rapid detection of F. asiaticum. The reaction conditions were optimized to provide a rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective method for F. asiaticum detection. The optimized method demonstrated exceptional specificity in detecting F. asiaticum while not detecting any of the 14 other Fusarium strains and 3 non-Fusarium species. Additionally, it could detect F. asiaticum DNA at concentrations as low as 20 ag/µL, allowing for the diagnosis of F. asiaticum infection in maize and wheat kernels even after 3 days of inoculation. The developed assay will provide an efficient and robust detection platform to accelerate plant pathogen detection.

In recent years, petal blight disease caused by pathogens has become increasingly epidemic in Rhododendron. Breeding disease-resistant rhododendron is considered to be a more environmentally friendly strategy than is the use of chemical reagents. In this study, we aimed to investigate the response mechanisms of rhododendron varieties to petal blight, using transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses. Specifically, we monitored changes in gene expression and metabolite accumulation in Rhododendron 'Xiaotaohong' petals infected with the Alternaria sp. strain (MR-9). The infection of MR-9 led to the development of petal blight and induced significant changes in gene transcription. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were predominantly enriched in the plant-pathogen interaction pathway. These DEGs were involved in carrying out stress responses, with genes associated with H2O2 production being up-regulated during the early and late stages of infection. Correspondingly, H2O2 accumulation was detected in the vicinity of the blight lesions. In addition, defense-related genes, including PR and FRK, exhibited significant up-regulated expression during the infection by MR-9. In the late stage of the infection, we also observed significant changes in differentially abundant metabolites (DAMs), including flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, and terpenes. Notably, the levels of euscaphic acid, ganoderol A, (-)-cinchonidine, and theophylline in infected petals were 21.8, 8.5, 4.5, and 4.3 times higher, respectively, compared to the control. Our results suggest that H2O2, defense-related genes, and DAM accumulation are involved in the complex response mechanisms of Rhododendron 'Xiaotaohong' petals to MR-9 infection. These insights provide a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of petal blight disease and may have practical implications for developing disease-resistant rhododendron varieties.

BackgroundEpidemics of keratoconjunctivitis may involve various aetiological agents. Microsporidia are an uncommon difficult-to-diagnose cause of such outbreaks.AimDuring the third quarter of 2022, a keratoconjunctivitis outbreak was reported across Israel, related to common water exposure to the Sea of Galilee. We report a comprehensive diagnostic approach that identified Vittaforma corneae as the aetiology, serving as proof of concept for using real-time metagenomics for outbreak investigation.MethodsCorneal scraping samples from a clinical case were subjected to standard microbiological testing. Samples were tested by calcofluor white staining and metagenomic short-read sequencing. We analysed the metagenome for taxonomical assignment and isolation of metagenome-assembled genome (MAG). Targets for a novel PCR were identified, and the assay was applied to clinical and environmental samples and confirmed by long-read metagenomic sequencing.ResultsFluorescent microscopy was suggestive of microsporidiosis. The most abundant species (96.5%) on metagenomics analysis was V. corneae. Annotation of the MAG confirmed the species assignment. A unique PCR target in the microsporidian rRNA gene was identified and validated against the clinical sample. The assay and metagenomic sequencing confirmed V. corneae in an environmental sludge sample collected at the exposure site.ConclusionsThe real-time utilisation of metagenomics allowed species detection and development of diagnostic tools, which aided in outbreak source tracking and can be applied for future cases. Metagenomics allows a fully culture-independent investigation and is an important modality for public health microbiology.
