RESUMO

Unfinished business (UB), when individuals appraise their relationship with others or themselves as incomplete or unresolved, entails difficult emotions such as regret, remorse, and guilt. UB is often associated with bereavement and is considered to be a predictor of complicated grief. Here we report two case studies describing the processing of the sudden death of a significant other in the context of a randomized controlled study of 12-week drama therapy groups for older adults. The intervention followed the format of Playback Theater, an improvised form of theater based on personal stories, and a life review paradigm. A mixed-methods approach explored the course of individual therapy within the group and potential mechanisms of change. The participants completed mental health questionnaires in a pre-post-follow-up design. The qualitative data included video recordings and postintervention interviews. One participant reported a clinically significant (CS) change in depressive symptoms and psychological well-being on the post and follow-up measurement indices. The second reported a CS change in self-esteem and relationship satisfaction at the end of the intervention, but not at follow-up. The findings suggest that the drama therapy contributed to the resolution of UB through restorative work in the three domains defined in meaning reconstruction theory: the "event story" of the loss, the "back story" of the relationship with the deceased, and the "personal story" of self. The results point to the need for additional research on meaning reconstruction in the context of drama therapy and encourage the broader application of performative techniques to treat complicated bereavement.

OBJECTIVE: This research was carried out to reduce the fear, anxiety and pain of 4-6 age circumcised children with therapeutic play and video animation interventions. METHODS: This research was conducted as a randomized controlled study between November 2019 and April 2021. Using block randomization, 30 (n = 30) children were assigned to the control group, 30 (n = 30) to the therapeutic puppet group and 30 (n = 30) to the video animation group. Before the circumcision surgery, therapeutic puppet and video animation interventions were applied to children with scenario prepared with psychodrama technique. Fear, anxiety, and pain findings of children before and after surgery were determined. RESULTS: The fear and anxiety scores of the children were similar before the nursing intervention in all groups, and that the fear and anxiety scores of therapeutic puppet play and video animation intervention groups had statistically lower than the control group after nursing intervention. The pain scores of the children from the therapeutic puppet play and video animation groups had lower pain scores than the control group after surgery (F = 5.24, p = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: Therapeutic play and video animation intervention can be effective in reducing fear and anxiety of children aged 4-6 before and after circumcision surgery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This paper explores a field training project of tele-drama therapy with community-dwelling older adults during COVID19. It merges three perspectives: the older participants' perspective, the students engaged in the field training, who conducted this remote therapy, and social workers. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 19 older adults. Focus groups were conducted with 10 drama therapy students and 4 social workers. The data were thematically analyzed. RESULTS: Three themes emerged: the role of drama therapy methods in the therapeutic process, attitudes toward psychotherapy for older adults, and the phone as a therapeutic setting. These themes coalesced into a triangular model associating dramatherapy, tele-psychotherapy and psychotherapy with the older population. A number of obstacles were identified. CONCLUSIONS: The field training project made a dual contribution to the older participants and the students. In addition, it promoted more positive attitudes among the students toward psychotherapy with the older population. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Tele-drama therapy methods appear to promote the therapeutic process with older adults. However, the phone session should be planned in advance in terms of time and place to ensure the participants' privacy. Field training of mental health students with older adults can promote more positive attitudes toward working with the older population.

The development of socio-emotional skills has been considered an essential component for a quality education, enabling significant benefits in the well-being and growth of children and adolescents. The promotion of such skills allows the ability to manage emotions, the promotion of positive interpersonal relationships, the acquisition of strategies for solving problems, making informed decision, the development of positive social behaviors and, consequently, the prevention of risky behaviors. Outlining intervention projects that promote the development of these skills from childhood has proven to be a priority topic and has been a frequent priority by various professionals when it comes to the prevention of mental illness. However, for the development of projects on this theme aimed at adolescence, the literature is less complete. One of the main goals of this intervention project was to evaluate the importance and possible effectiveness of implementing interventions that promote the development of socio- emotional skills through a group of adolescents in a situation of acute mental illness, in a hospital context, using dramatization techniques. The aim was to understand if this could constitute a need and be an integral part of each adolescent's individual therapeutic project, as a strategy and resource that facilitates and promotes behavior change and the integration of new strategies to deal with the various issues that lead teenagers to become mentally ill. For this intervention project, group sessions were planned and implemented in which psychotherapeutic interventions were developed.

Suicide is the second most common cause of death in young populations aged 10 to 24 years, with an estimated 4 million adolescents attempting suicide and 164,000 succeeding (Saunders & O'Connor, 2012 and WHO, 2014). This problem has an impact in terms of the biopsycho-socio-emotional and cultural dimensions of themselves, family, friends and society, and its etiology is complex and multifatorial. In this way, this problem lacks a thoughtfull and reflected therapeutic approach based on the needs felt and verbalized by the adolescents. Bearing these issues in mind, it is essential that, as specialist nurses in mental and psychiatric health, we focus on this issue to develop concrete and efficient action plans to promote the improvement of the mental health status of this population and their families. The objectives outlined for this project are related to the acquisition of specialized skills, with the identification and characterization of the pattern of suicidal behavior, as well as the implementation of an intervention program, with a total of 8 sessions, in an open group in the context of inpatient, with adolescents from 10 to 17 years old, using dramatic expression as an expressive-artistic mediator. The methodology used was qualitative, using instruments such as the intervention program with dramatic expression, direct observation, informal interviews, learning journals and consultation of documentation and clinical records, with the therapeutic relationship being the pillar of all interventions carried out. A review of the literature was also carried out, for the teorical foundation of the therapeutic interventions. The implementation of the intervention program using dramatization in adolescents with suicidal behaviors was a positive contribution to demonstrate the importance of dramatic expression as an expressive-artistic mediator, as it was found that it helps young people to know strategies to deal with their difficulties, becoming aware of themselves, reacquiring meaning for their experiences, stimulating their creativity and spontaneity, and providing a consequent improvement in their mental health status.

RESUMO

This study was designed to examine the potential benefit of the addition of psychodrama classes to antenatal education as a new technique to address fear of childbirth. This was a randomised controlled trial. A total of 150 women were initially enrolled in two groups. Psychodrama sessions were added to standard antenatal education in the experiment group. The control group participated only in routine antenatal education classes. Birth outcomes and fear of childbirth were measured and analysed to assess the impact. The analysis was completed with an experimental group of 50 women and a control group of 49 women. At the conclusion of the training, it was observed that there was a greater decrease in fear of childbirth in the experiment group than in the control group. Additionally, in the postpartum period, the experimental group had a higher rate of vaginal childbirth and a shorter childbirth time than the control group. Psychodrama may be an effective means of reducing fear of childbirth and reduced caesarean section childbirth. Psychoeducation should be added antenatal education programs. Thus, it may represent an important tool in the efforts to improve maternal mental health and also provide broader social benefits.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Studies examining means to reduce fear of childbirth have found that psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioural therapy, eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing, haptotherapy and art therapy were useful. What the results of this study add? Psychodrama as a new intervention may be beneficial decreased of fear of childbirth, increased of normal birth rate and at improving the experience of pregnancy and childbirth. What the implications are of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Protecting and caring for the mental health of the mother and child benefits the entire community. It has been reported that 1 in 5 mothers experience psychiatric difficulties during the postpartum period, and 7 of 10 do not receive treatment, which has a negative impact on the mother, the child and family. Assesment of the mental health of women during the postpartum period is not regularly performed in many countries and women are frequently left to struggle on their own. The identification of pregnant women who have a high fear of childbirth and who are at risk of developing a psychiatric disorder by nurses is an important element of providing of appropriate, high-quality care.

RESUMO

Spontaneity and its connections to mental health and wellbeing are a central issue in both theory and practice of psychodrama, and the specialized literature sometimes even associates the presence of pathology to a lack of spontaneity. This paper describes spontaneity in Moreno's theory, its assessment, its association with other measures and concepts, and scientific advances in the field. Specifically, we present results obtained with the English and Portuguese-language versions concerning its assessment. The main purpose of this work was to study the spontaneity measure (SAI-R) in a 3 first-order factors version for a Portuguese sample of 439 subjects, divided into two independent samples. The mean age of participants was 25.6 years (SD = 10.2), and ages ranged between 18 and 64 years. Data was collected through an online platform of a Portuguese market research company. The results revealed that the 3-factor model has acceptable validity for items 1 ("Creative") and 7 ("Euphoric"), confirming the composite reliability, the convergent validity, but not the discriminant validity. Through multi-group analysis, the model proved to be stable. Notwithstanding the need for complementary studies, including clinical samples, the SAI-R is a short and valid instrument in clinical and non-clinical contexts when evaluating spontaneity.

RESUMO

The impact of drama therapy on mental health recovery remains poorly understood. We examined the effects of a pilot remote drama therapy program for community members living with serious mental illness. The entire intervention was delivered remotely. Participants with serious mental illness completed a 12-week drama therapy program which included an online performance open to the public. Four quantitative scales were administered pre- and post-program. A focus group was conducted 1 week after the performance. Six participants completed the program and crafted a public performance themed around hope. No significant differences were identified in the quantitative measures. Five themes were identified in the post-performance focus group. Drama therapy presents an opportunity for individuals with serious mental illness to process and share their journeys with their diagnoses and re-create a healthy sense of self with increased community awareness.

RESUMO

COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns created a global public health crisis generating mental health problems including social isolation, stress, and anxiety especially for persons with dementia and their carers. This article reports on the use of digital technology to maintain social connectivity via a virtual group session that focused on the topic of "what is home." Participants in this session included 16 day-care center clients representing an immigrant community identified with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. A trained psychodrama therapist conducted the virtual group meeting based on five key techniques: spectrogram, role reversal, doubling, mirroring, and soliloquy. The NVivo software was used for the qualitative analysis of the transcribed video recording to identify key themes based on grounded theory methodology. Zooming from home, clients engaged in significant social interaction. Findings of the NVivo analysis identified the following themes of "what is home": Emotions and home, Home is family, Home is community, and Reminiscence (with objects and traditions). Findings suggest that digital interactive technologies, like Zoom, enhance social connectivity thus mitigating the negative impact of social isolation for persons with dementia especially during pandemic lockdowns. Our pilot findings based on virtual group meetings from home demonstrate that participants can express significant emotive capacity and enhanced connectivity with one another despite a diagnosis of mild to moderate dementia. While larger studies are needed to confirm these findings, we suggest that this methodology may be used to support persons with dementia not only in times of pandemics but also as an addition to other community and home care services. Changes in reimbursement policies to include these innovative home services may be helpful in building more resilient communities for the more highly vulnerable populations.

RESUMO

Jacob Levy Moreno, the well-known creator of psychodrama, had a close epistolary relationship with the Spanish psychiatrist Ramón Sarró; a collection of these letters has been located in the Sarró personal archive, deposited in the Library of Catalonia. After locating and arranging this correspondence, we proceeded to analyze and contextualize its contents. The analysis of this collection serves as a basis to outline the context in which the relationship between Moreno and Sarró developed, the role played by certain psychotherapy congresses in strengthening their relationships, and the process that resulted in the University of Barcelona awarding Moreno Doctor Honoris Causa. This study has allowed us to identify certain areas of how psychodrama was received in Spain during the 1960s and reflect on the creation of international collaboration networks and the creation of schools and professional and academic legitimation strategies in the wake of the approaches to group psychotherapy and psychodrama that Moreno developed while based in New York. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Group psychodrama for children is one of the methods of group therapy in treatment of many behavioral and emotional disorders of children. However, it has been used very few in hospital settings. So, in this study, the group psychodrama was applied to evaluate its effectiveness for. METHOD: Sixteen children with leukemia aged 6-9 years participated in the present randomized controlled trial. Eight children in the intervention group and eight children in the control group were randomly assigned. The intervention group participated in eight sessions of group psychodrama (during the hospitalization time) and the control group waited for the treatment. The score of the bio-psycho-social expressions of incompatibility in hospital (BPSEIH) checklist was the criterion of evaluation of the group psychodrama effectiveness. RESULTS: The results showed that group psychodrama was significantly effective in modifying the BPSEIH. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate the effectiveness of group psychodrama to moderate the psychological consequences of cancer and showed the feasibility of using this method in the hospital settings.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the effects of a psychodrama-based risk management training program on nurses' knowledge and practices. This study used a mixed methods design; quantitative and qualitative methods were used together with a single group pretest, post-test, and follow-up. The training program, in which the nurses took part, comprised six lessons that were designed using psychodrama methods. The result showed that risk management scores increased significantly after the training. RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the effects of psychodrama group practices on nursing students' levels of self-liking, self-competence, and self-acceptance. DESIGN AND METHOD: This study was a non-randomized quasi-experimental study with a control group including pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test procedures. The study was carried out with 29 participants, including 15 experimental and 14 control group participants. The study data were collected using the sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, the Self-Liking/Self-Competence Scale, and the Unconditional Self-Acceptance Scale. FINDING: It was found that the self-liking sub-dimension, self-liking/self-competence, and unconditional self-acceptance total scores in the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group in the post-test measurements. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Psychodrama group practices have significant positive effects on students' self-liking, self-competence, and self-acceptance among nursing students.
