The roles of the veterinary sciences in disasters and emergencies related too esposures of the environment to harmful chemicals are reviewed. Characteristics of chemical emergencies which require the use of the veterinary sciences are discussed. Veterinary services are important in the 1) definition of the kind and severity of the pollution through biological monitoring 2) use of animals as monitors of the environment; 3) use of changes in the health status of animals for identification of pathophysiologic changes to man and other animals 4)maintenance of the hygiene of elements of the food chain. 5) evacuation and management of animal populations 6) disponsal of carcasses and 7)treatment and follow-up of involved animals populations. Veterinay services are important compoments of reponses to incidents marked by chemical pollution and must be included in the development of contingency plans to meet the demands created by chemical pollution (AU)

RESUMO

This report describes animal emergencies that may be caused by epizootic and zoonotic diseases and the related role that veterinarians have as protectors of a safe supply of foods of animal origin, guardians of public health providers of medical assistance following disasters and advisors on the management and disposal of affected livestock, poultry, and companion animals

RESUMO

This report attempts to identify the major biological agents which could bring disaster to both man and animal and offers various methods to prevent and/or combat a biological catastrophe. Because the veterinarian is trained to deal with diseases that often may involve entire herds of flocks instead of the individual, he is uniquely qualified to deal with populations in disaster

RESUMO

After the initial period of assessment of damages and the application of emergency treatments to animals, veterinarians must aid in the safeguarding of food and water supplies, as authorized and directed by the responsible disaster services officials or military government

RESUMO

The responsabilities of veterinarians during a conventional war would include assisting in the care of mass casualties, the disposal and treatment of dead and injured animals, the determination of food acceptible for consumption, and the detection and reporting of increases in animal diseases that are common to man and those that are communicable to man

RESUMO

This report describes chemical disaster situations in which human risk is the overriding consideration. Emphasis is placed on hazards to persons who may deal with contaminated people or animals. Precautions and response designed to reduce some life- threatening consequences of various chemical emergencies are discussed

RESUMO

The veterinary practitioner has both the proficiency and the responsibility for dealing with exposure of animals to chemicals that have accidently or covertly polluted the environment. This responsibility requires maintaining animal health and preserving a wholesome human food supply, monitoring companion animals and food animals for evidence of hazardous amounts of chemicals in the environment, addressing the sanitation and public health aspects of catastrophic pollution problems, and supervising the confinement and evacuation of livestock and companion animals

RESUMO

During december 1983 and early January 1984, about 200 Canada geese (Branta canadensis) died of lead poisoning at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island, massachusetts. In an effort to determine the source of lead, 100 bottom samples were taken from a refuge impoundment where much of the mortality/morbidity occurred. An average of 157,150 pellets/ha was found with a range of 64,582 to 322,910 pellets/ha. Water levels in this impoundment were low when Canada geese arrived, making shot more readily available to the geese and contributing to the outbreak. To minimize the risk of Canada geese being exposed to lead shot poisoning at this location in the future, we recommend several corrective manipulation of habitat

RESUMO

This study was conducted to improve speculation of changes in breathing which might be expected while inhaling a dust like Mt. St. Helens volcanic ash. Effects of fine volcanic ash aerosol on pulmonary mechanical properties of awake Guinea pigs were evaluated during exposure by in halation. Ash penetration into the lung as well as tissue response to ash were determinated by transmission electron mycroscopy. The reactivity of airway epithelial irritant receptors following ash exposure was assessed using a histamine bronchoprovocation test. Airways of Guinea pigs exposed to ash were significantly less responsible to histamine tan were the airways of animals exposed only to air (AU)
