Homeopathy was created in 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, before his dissatisfaction with the results of current medical attention at the time. Brought to Brazil in 1841 by Benedict Mure had its apogee period and decline always in the shadow of prejudice raised by the dominant allopathy, but at the same time managing to keep active because of its many examples of successful treatments. Incentive attempts to bring to light such bicentennial medicine has appeared increasingly on the need for a more holistic and educational assistance of health as opposed to mechanistic and invasive care presented today. In this sense, several norms of public policy have occurred, the main one being the National Policy on Integrative Practice Complementary and 2006. Purpose: To reflect on the potential of homeopathy and its future as an integrative practice. Method: Literature review of the latest literature on the subject, the experiences of public services in homeopathy and historical data of homeopathy in Brazil. Results: The space offered as a public policy of integrative practice is an opportunity for the expansion of homeopathy as primary care, for greater knowledge of his philosophy and means of achieving more resources for education and research. However, this medicine created by Hanhemann is much more complex and embrace and should not just be a complement of knowledge current hegemonic, but a valid and authentic medical specialty. (AU)

RESUMO

Background: Potentized medicines include, according to the Brazilian legislation, homeopathic, anthroposophic, and antihomotoxic medicine and are regulated by the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). Aim: This study aims to analyze and describe a profile of potentized medicines manufactured in Brazil, either registered or notified. Methodology: Information was obtained by data analysis related to ANVISA’s electronic medicine registration system. Results: The results, obtained as of September 2012, showed that 106 potentized medicines were registered and 519 were notified. Among the registered medicines, 92.0% were combined and 100.0% of the notified were simple medicines. For registered medicines, there were equivalent manufacturing scales among them, whereas for notified medicines, there was a predominance of centesimal scales. Active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) of vegetal origin were the most commonly used for potentized medicine manufacturing processes; the oral route was the most common form of administration. Potentized medicines manufacturing units are more often located in southeast region of Brazil. In addition, homeopathic medicines prevail as registered or notified medicines, followed by anthroposophic medicines. Conclusions: The results of the study are expected to be useful as reference material for ANVISA to improve its regulatory activity as well the industry sector and other stakeholders. (AU)

(AU)

Homeopathy establishes principles to understand living beings as wholes; this art involves the analysis of pathological signs and symptoms, and the manipulation of specific drugs to induce integral recovery of health in living beings. A resolution by the Brazilian Federal Council of Pharmacy (2005) establishes the minimum requirements for pharmacists to assume the task of preparing homeopathic medicines. To understand the ideas of undergraduate pharmacy students at Lutheran University Center of Ji-Paraná, Brazil (Centro Universitário Luterano de Ji,-Paraná (CEULJI/ULBRA), a questionnaire was applied to assess their understanding relative to some definitions and concepts used in homeopathy and integrative medicine as a whole. Out of the full sample (n = 120), a considerable proportion of participants (96%) declared to know what homeopathy is, and 30% had obtained this information from people close to them. less than half of the participants were able to characterize or define homeopathy correctly as a therapeutic tool, while some mistook it for Bach flower therapy (28.8%). Among the participants who reported having used homeopathy, 81% did it without a medical prescription, and a considerable part of them was unaware of the existence of the National Policy for Integrative and Complementary Practices (PNPIC) of the Unified Health System (SUS). We conclude that didactic interventions on this subject are needed looking to a better explanation about the definitions and concepts related to the practice of the homeopathy and the integrative therapies, for those future pharmacists.

(AU)

Since its introduction in Brazil in 1843, Homeopathy has presented a unique history with improvements and setbacks. In 2006 the Brazilian Ministry of Health finally introduces the National Policy on Integrative and Complementary Practices (PNPIC, in Portuguese), a set of guidelines aiming to standardize and formalize the practices of Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Hydrotherapy and Anthroposophy offered by the National Health System (SUS, in Portuguese). The aim of this study is to understand the impacts of those guidelines, already in process of consolidation, on Homeopathy service offered by SUS. This is a qualitative study that used the methodological framework of Content Analysis and collected data between 2012 and 2013 through the application of recorded semi-structured interviews that were later fully transcribed and analyzed. Those interviews were conducted with medical coordinator and/or managers of seven Homeopathy Services located in Southeastern Brazil. The analysis of the interviews unveiled themes relating to the formulated questions, revealing perceptions about the impact of each one of the seven PNPIC guidelines related to the homeopathic area. It is possible to observe that, given thepeculiar process of construction and structuring of SUS Homeopathic Services both progress and stagnation could be perceived after the introduction of PNPIC.Established goals, formatted templates, guiding actions, publicity and some specificevents could be mentioned as some of PNPIC's sensed benefits. [...]. This new scenario still presents several challenges to PNPIC's full potential in reaching an integrative medicine model within SUS, revealing its resources may be still underutilized. It is still necessary to find ways to transform all PNPIC potential into viable actions. (AU)

RESUMO

Introduction: The role played by minimum quantities, generating large scale effects, and even of catastrophic consequence, is very commonly observed in many areas of science. In Physics, for example, the doping of impurities in materials like silicon (as low as one atom per billion) results in spectacular semiconductor properties. In Biology, the effects of pheromones produced by insects and other animals are so dramatic that females of the emperor moth can attract mating males from kilometers away. And, concerning human health, severe body reactions may occur following the ingestion of very diminutive quantity of some allergic food. In this paper, the question of how Nature provides mechanisms for developing such dramatic and many times unexpected results, from very faint stimulus, will be proposed and discussed. In particular, a model for the controversial issue of how homeopathic remedies can influence and impose organic responses will also be addressed. This model particularly rely on the here named infotrans mechanism, which is based on a type of resonant property that may induce living organisms to promptly over-react after a pseudo environmental aggression. Finally, arguments will be provided to demonstrate that water, mainly due to its very high dielectric constant, can be considered a very good mediator for the infotrans. The Role of Water in Important Biological Mechanisms: Assuming that water molecules can indeed rearrange themselves to form larger clusters, it is reasonable to accept that different external excitations might induce these structures to assemble in distinctive ways. As matter of fact, experimental evidences already exist in literature showing that ultra-high dilutions of different substances, when compared to pure water, do exhibit relevant physico-chemical differences. More recently, investigations have shown that water plays a crucial role in biological systems such as the protein folding process or the twisting of DNA helixes. Thus, it is reasonable to accept that water, having the possibly of structuring itself in an almost endless variety of ways, it will impact in a unique and own peculiar way the individual cells and even entire organs. That is, the codified information related to the specific architecture of the water cluster, in result to previous stimulus (infotrans), will be passed on to the living organism through the nervous system and induce, in consequence, a prompt reaction. The specific type of response commanded by the mind, after detecting a particular infotrans, will depend on the array of experiences the living being had previously undergone. In some circumstances, however, the mind may mistake the information received from the nervous system, treating a harmless organic process as a dangerous attack. In this situation the overall body reaction can be very dramatic, as the reported cases of children that had to be hospitalized in serious health conditions (even with some fatal occurrences) after the ingestion of only residual amounts of allergic foods like peanut, wheat and milk. The Transfer of Information (InfoTrans) and the Placebo Effect: Interestingly, the mechanism of infotrans is much more extensive and does not restrict itself to transference of information by material means. All our five senses are channels that bring information to the mind and which might cause global bodyInt J High Dilution Res 2011; 10(36):97-100Proceedings of the XXV GIRI Symposium and VIII CBFH; 2011 Sep 04-07; Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil)98reactions. The picture of a grotesque insect, for example, may induce a sensitive (entomophobic) person to sweat, feel dizzy and, sometimes, even trigger severe emotional reactions like panic and terror. Moreover, different persons that listen to a playing music are observed to react in different ways. Of course, it is not the music being played that causes, by itself, these reactions. What happens is that each individual?s mind will process the same stimulus (the music) differently, based on the various situations experienced throughout the person?s existences, and which had been stored in his sub-conscience. To finalize, it is not difficult to conclude, from the discussion above, that the ?placebo effect? can be easily understood in terms of the here proposed infotrans mechanism. By accepting the suggestion from any health personnel, and/or truly believing that a prescribed healing procedure will be effective, the mind eventually triggers many sorts of organic reactions that turn out to be efficient enough to resolve a person?s medical problem. Conclusions: In this work the mechanism of infotrans (transferred information) is proposed as an explanation of how homeopathic remedies are very successful in restoring people?s health. It is based on the innumerous experiences a person has undergone throughout his lives and which have been imprinted in his sub-conscience. After receiving the information from an homeopathic preparation (codified by the way the water clusters structured themselves), if the corresponding infotrans does resonate with some archetypal experience the patient has stored in his sub-conscience (related to an ancient case in which he had suffered a type of illness which has caused the same kind of symptoms he is now experiencing), his defensive immune system will automatically receive from the mind a command to counterattack the (hypothetical) aggression by strongly intensifying the defensive measurements already on course and/or initiating new ones.(AU)

Background: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by a reversible obstruction and hyperactivity of inferior aerial treat [1]. It is responsible for lifestyle modification and, considering its high frequency, it became an important issue in the budget of health services around the world. Aspects like the lack of definitive results and presence of adverse effects, observed for traditional therapy, as well as the search for better quality of life have increased patients? interest for complementary and alternative medicines (CAM), being homeopathy one of the most cited [2]. In 2001, asthma was between the 10 diagnostics most treated by homeopaths in USA [3]. Aims: In this work, a qualitative research was made focusing the evaluation of the real contribution that homeopathy can represent for asthma patients and the role of pharmacist in this therapy. Methodology: databases such as Medline, Sciencedirect and Bireme were used to find scientific articles, applying the expressions ?asthma?, ?homeopathy? and ?complementary and alternative medicine?. Results: At least six works demonstrate successful applications of homeopathic treatment in children or adults with asthma. The main benefits cited are the decrease of frequency and gravity of the crises, besides of some cure cases. Conclusions: Data available are still scanty about asthma homeopathic treatment. The few works found showed this kind of therapy is very adequate, mainly because of the emotional component of the disease, but also because it represents to be away from the adverse effects commonly related to the traditional therapy (e. g. corticoids). To ensure a correct therapy is being made, the pharmacist must be present and active in the patients? identification and documentation, giving them right orientations about the use and storage of homeopathic medicines, besides of stimulating a close and confidence relationship with the homeopath. Also, the manufacturing of remedies must be according to the official guidelines in order to guarantee their quality.(AU)

RESUMO

The World Health Organization states that deaths from cancer are increasing reaching an estimated 12 million deaths by 2030 [1]. In Brazil will be about 480,000 new cases by the end of 2011 [2]. For the treatment of cancer conventional therapies are used, such as chemotherapy[3] and radiotherapy [4] which can cause many adverse reactions. Complementary therapies such as homeopathy can be combined to traditional cancer treatment with the aim of minimizing these adverse reactions, relieving the symptoms of the disease itself and its treatment. Other complementary therapies which can aid in cancer treatment are electrotherapy, acupuncture and electroacupuncture, nutritional supplements, probiotics, phytotherapy, among others[5]. The literature shows the homeopathic medicines can be prescribed using the patient?s physical constitution as one strategy to help cancer patients [6-11]. This work aims to compile the literature review done with in vitro and in vivo models describing the mechanisms of action of homeopathic medicines used to treat different kinds of cancer. The research findings showed that homeopathy can help the patient to come to terms with the disease, after cancer diagnosis which often brings with itself denial, fear and a host of psychological disorders that cause an unbalance in the body. In addition, some works done with in vitro and in vivo models have shown that homeopathic medicines can modulate the immune system, activating macrophages and inducing the release of cytokines. These and other effects may help the body to overcome the cancer. The use of homeopathic therapy as complementary to conventional cancer treatment has promising results and should be further investigated.(AU)

RESUMO

Introduction: Influenza viruses have been responsible for highly contagious acute respiratory illnesses with high mortality, mainly in the elderly, which encourages the development of new drugs for the treatment of human flu. The biotherapics are medicines prepared from biological products, which are not chemically defined. They are compounded following the homeopathic procedures indicated for infectious diseases with known etiology [1]. Aim: The purpose of the present study is to verify cellular alterations induced by a biotherapic prepared from the infectious influenza A virus. Methodology: This biotherapic was prepared for this study in the homeopathic potency of 30X according to the Brazilian Homeopathic Pharmacopeia [2]. The concentration of 10% was not cytotoxic to cells, as verified by neutral red assay. The cellular alterations observed in MDCK cells were analyzed by optical microscopy for the quantification of mitosis, nucleoli and lipid bodies. The mitochondrial activity was assessed by MTT assay and the phosphosfructokinase-1 (PFK-1) enzyme activity was analyzed on the MDCK cells treated for 5, 10 and 30 days. Macrophages J778.G8 were treated with this biotherapic to evaluate the immunostimulatory cytokine release. Results: The cellular alterations observed in MDCK cells were verified by optical microscopy. The number of lipid bodies present in MDCK cells stimulated for 10 days was significantly lower (p <0.05) when compared to controls. The biotherapic significantly increased (p <0.05) the number of mitosis and the mitochondrial activity of MDCK cells stimulated for 10 and 30 days. These changes were confirmed by a significant reduction (p <0.05) on the PFK-1 activity. These results suggest that the biotherapic was able to activate the Krebs cycle and pentosephosphate metabolism to the generation of amino acids and nucleotides, situations common to cells whose rate of mitosis is increased. The quantification of immunostimulatory cytokines by macrophages J774.G8 indicated that the tumor necrosis factor (TNF-?) production was higher (p <0.05) in the supernatant of the macrophages pre-treated with this biotherapic and infected with influenza virus, suggesting an activation of the macrophages by this biotherapic. Conclusion: This biotherapic is able to induce some cellular alterations, which show strong evidence that it might be a promising option for the human flu. New experiments are being developed to understand the mechanisms of action of this biotherapic.(AU)

RESUMO

The paradigm of corporeal signifiers of Madeleine Bastide and Agnès Lagache is very close to the informational paradigm of Claude Levy-Strauss. We will show that this paradigm is compatible with the main results of the research on High Dilution. It can be a very good tool to locate the differents studies on HD and can be of great help for the researcher. The paradigm shows us that the future must also be part of basic research; but it seems important to differentiate experimental studies and basic research. This basic research has to be organized along with conventional researchers, experts in their own areas.(AU)

RESUMO

Since the 80´s Madeleine Bastide and Agnès Lagache have worked on the idea of the Body Signifier Theory, in which the living systems could be defined as ?sensible? systems not only able to self-organize, but also to receive and process non-molecular information according to the Pierce semiotic triad: matrix, receiver and carrier. These ideas were built along 20 years of experimental observations, whose results presented some kind of stereotyped pattern that emerged from cells or animals exposed to high dilutions, according to the similia principle. Curiously, at the same time, classical scientific communities have developed the concept of biosemiotics after the observation that living systems are semiotics entities able to deal with codes and meanings, even in molecule-driven processes. Not only the genetic code, but all regulatory functions in living systems represent coding processes. The development of methodologies to identify and understand these codes and its outputs is the aim of biosemiotic science. Putting both concepts together (body signifiers and biosemiotics), it is possible to recognize strong similarities between their approaches and methodology, allowing logical connections between non-molecular signals and changes in cell interactions patterns. Thus, the general concept of biosemiotic could be a theoretical platform on which the construction of a solid phenomenological description of high dilutions effects could be done.(AU)

The issue around whether there is a “new” variety of medical pluralism is quite recent. To discuss it, restricted to the German and Indian settings, a conference was carried out in 2011 at the Institute for the History of Medicine of the Robert Bosch Foundation, Stuttgart, Germany. A multidisciplinary approach was selected: participants included practicing homeopathic physicians, historians, anthropologists and philosophers. This articles summarizes the individual presentations and the conclusions reached.(AU)
