RESUMO

At the end of March 2020, ivermectin was confirmed as a drug for COVID-19 treatment. A significant amount of ivermectin could deposit into sediments of the semi-closed Mediterranean Sea, where three European COVID-19 epicenters are located: Italy, Spain, and France. Meiobenthic nematodes were exposed to three ivermectin doses (1.8 ng.g-1, 9 ng.g-1, and 18 ng.g-1) for 10 days. Ivermectin caused a great reduction in abundance. However, the diversity indices decreased only at high doses. Ivermectin disadvantaged the 1B-Cr-Id functional type (non-selective deposit feeders and nematodes with circular or indistinct amphids) and benefited the 2A-REL-Sp type (epistrate feeders and nematodes with rounded or elongated loop amphids). Thus, Trophic Diversity and Amphideal Diversity index values increased with sedimentary ivermectin enrichment. Large amphideal foveas were more efficient for 2A-REL-Sp nematodes to avoid ivermectin. The responses of the functional type 2A-REL-Sp and corresponding taxa predict post-COVID-19 environmental concerns and the bioaccumulation of ivermectin in seafoods.

Bacillus sp. SMrs28, metabolites from which had significant nematicidal activity, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Stellera chamaejasme. To determine the optimal fermentation conditions of the strain and the resin type of preliminary purified active ingredient, fermentation conditions were optimized by single factor experiment, while the macroporous resin types were screened in a static adsorption experiment. The results showed that the optimal fermentation conditions of SMrs28 strain were as follows: glucose and yeast powder were the best carbon source and nitrogen source, fermentation for 48 h, inoculum volume of 10%, temperature at 28 ℃,a rotation speed of 180 r·min-1, liquid volume of 30 mL in 150 mL triangular flask, and with an initial pH of 7.2. The static adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption and desorption of active ingre-dients in the fermentation broth by the macroporous adsorption resin D101 was significantly better than that of XAD-4, HP20 and AB-8, with the nematicidal activity of the desorption liquid being significantly improved. The nematicidal activity of fermentation broth was significantly improved by the optimization of fermentation conditions and the screening of optimal macroporous adsorption resins. These results laid a foundation for the further isolation and purification of active ingredients from SMrs28 strain, and provided theoretical basis for the development and utilization of microbial nematicides.

The establishment of Medicago sativa artificial grasslands is an important practice of grassland vegetation restoration in the Loess Plateau. Understanding community characteristics of soil microbes and nematodes can provide important information for evaluating and controlling ecolo-gical and environmental effects of vegetation restoration. In this study, we used M. sativa artificial grasslands with four different cultivation years (1, 2, 6 and 12 years) in southern Ningxia mountainous region, with a farmland and a natural grassland as control, to explore changing trends of the two biological communities during artificial grassland restoration in semi-arid region of the Loess Plateau. The results showed that: 1) After the conversion of farmland to M. sativa grassland, Chao1, ACE and Shannon diversity indices of soil bacterial community increased firstly and then decreased, which reached the maximum after six years of M. sativa grassland establishment. For soil fungal community, Shannon diversity index was lower in 6 and 12 year-old M. sativa grasslands than in the other two artificial grasslands, and the community composition differed across restoration years. 2) With the increases of restoration years, the abundance of soil nematodes showed a similar changing trend with Shannon diversity index of bacterial community. The composition of nematode community did not greatly differ between the 6-year-old M. sativa grassland and farmland, while that in 12-year-old artificial grassland was more similar to that in natural grassland. The proportion of bacterivorous and plant-feeding nematodes, as well as plant parasitic index and nematode channel index of nematode community,were increased, while the proportion of fungivores and omnivores-predators and maturity index were decreased. 3) During the restoration, changes in soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and available phosphorus greatly affected soil microbial community, which could further influence soil nematode community. There were significant correlations between dominant microbial phyla and trophic groups of soil nematodes, implying the possible effects of soil microbes on nematode community. In M. sativa artificial grassland with different establishment years, changes in plant biomass and diversity might significantly affect soil nematode and microbial communities through affecting their food conditions.

A high-throughput sequencing approach was used to differentiate the nematode communities in the humus and soil surface layer (0-10 cm) in 20 hm2 plot located in the cold temperate coniferous and broadleaved mixed forest of Yulong Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, Lijiang, Yunnan. A total of 5744582 sequences were obtained, which were further annotated to 44 nematode families. In the humus layer, 37 families were recorded, with Tylenchidae (18.1%) being the most dominant family. For trophic groups, bacterivorous, fungivorous and herbivorous were predominant. The soil surface layer had 41 families, with Mononchidae (45.4%) being the most dominant family. The relative abundance of predatory nematode was highest in the soil surface layer. There was no significant difference in the α diversity indices (Shannon, Simpson and Chao1 index) of nematode communities at the OTU level between two habitats. At the family level, however, α diversity of nematode community in the humus layer was significantly lower than in soil surface layer. ß diversity of the nematode community was significantly different in the two habitats, with lower Cody index but high Sorensen non-similarity index in the humus habitat. Results of non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis showed that the internal structure difference of nematode community in the soil surface layer was higher than that in the humus layer.

Buteogallus schistaceus (Sundevall) is an endemic bird of prey from the Amazon region, with a declining population according to international conservation agencies. The objective of this study was to report the occurrence of a parasitic nematodes in an individual treated at the Ambulatório de Animais Silvestres of Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia, Belém campus. The animal was captured on campus and showed no resistance to capture. Fluid therapy and deworming were made, later the bird regurgited ten nematodes identified as belonging to the genus Procyrnea Chabaud (1958). Reviewing the scientific literature, it was found that so far there are no records on the helminth fauna of this bird species, which is therefore the first report of a nematode in B. schistaceus.

Efforts to identify new drugs for therapeutic and preventive treatments against parasitic nematodes have gained increasing interest with expanding pathogen omics databases and drug databases from which new anthelmintic compounds might be identified. Here, a novel approach focused on integrating a pan-Nematoda multi-omics data targeted to a specific nematode organ system (the intestinal tract) with evidence-based filtering and chemogenomic screening was undertaken. Based on de novo computational target prioritization of the 3,564 conserved intestine genes in A. suum, exocytosis was identified as a high priority pathway, and predicted inhibitors of exocytosis were tested using the large roundworm (Ascaris suum larval stages), a filarial worm (Brugia pahangi adult and L3), a whipworm (Trichuris muris adult), and the non-parasitic nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. 10 of 13 inhibitors were found to cause rapid immotility in A. suum L3 larvae, and five inhibitors were effective against the three phylogenetically diverse parasitic nematode species, indicating potential for a broad spectrum anthelmintics. Several distinct pathologic phenotypes were resolved related to molting, motility, or intestinal cell and tissue damage using conventional and novel histologic methods. Pathologic profiles characteristic for each inhibitor will guide future research to uncover mechanisms of the anthelmintic effects and improve on drug designs. This progress firmly validates the focus on intestinal cell biology as a useful resource to develop novel anthelmintic strategies.

This study examined over 20 fungal specimens of the Orbiliaceae (Orbiliomycetes) from different regions in China. Our analyses based on morphological traits and the ITS rDNA sequences revealed two new Orbilia species with drechslerella-like asexual morphs. These new species are able to trap nematodes with constricting rings. In addition, Orbilia cf. orientalis is reported as a new cryptic Chinese variant of European collections of O. orientalis. All three species are described and illustrated in detail in this paper. Their phylogenetic relationships with other orbiliaceous species were identified based on their ITS sequences.

An understanding of the forces controlling community structure in the deep sea is essential at a time when its pristineness is threatened by polymetallic nodule mining. Because abiotically defined communities are more sensitive to environmental change, we applied occurrence- and phylogeny-based metrics to determine the importance of biotic versus abiotic structuring processes in nematodes, the most abundant invertebrate taxon of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ), an area targeted for mining. We investigated the prevalence of rarity and the explanatory power of environmental parameters with respect to phylogenetic diversity (PD). We found evidence for aggregation and phylogenetic clustering in nematode amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) and the dominant genus Acantholaimus, indicating the influence of environmental filtering, sympatric speciation, affinity for overlapping habitats and facilitation for community structure. PD was associated with abiotic variables such as total organic carbon, chloroplastic pigments equivalents and/or mud content, explaining up to 57% of the observed variability and providing further support of the prominence of environmental structuring forces. Rarity was high throughout, ranging from 64 to 75% unique ASVs. Communities defined by environmental filtering with a prevalence of rarity in the CCFZ suggest taxa of these nodule-bearing abyssal plains will be especially vulnerable to the risk of extinction brought about by the efforts to extract them.

Meiobenthic nematodes have been designated as sensitive global models in the development of biomonitoring and ecotoxicology monitoring programs howbeit the sensitivity of these organisms against oxidative stress biomarkers have never been addressed. The present study aimed to decipher this research axis after selecting and culturing a single nematode species from an entire community through original laboratory protocols. The purpose of this investigation was to change the grain size of the sediment into the immediate environment of nematodes by progressively adding a biosubstrate made from Sepia officinalis endoskeletton. At the end of the experiment, Metoncholaimus pristiurus became the unique component of the nematode species when the sediment was enriched with 80% of S. officinalis powder. After the mono-species level had been achieved, the selected species was fed on an another biosubstrate made from bodies of Porcellio scaber under the identical laboratory controlled conditions of light and temperature adopted during the selection process. Accordingly, the bioassay protocol this study layed new foundations for the study of meiobenthic nematodes in the biomarker field. Our results revealed that, in case of M. pritiurus, discernible oxidative stress responses are valid for catalase and gluthatione S-transferase. Indeed, for both enzymes, a clear increase in the activity was recorded, and the response was more reinforced when zinc and permethrin were administrated in combination. The relevance of the protocols proposed in this work parallels their global applicability to reach and maintain the monospecific level in laboratory by using biosubstrates made from animals widely distributed. It is true also that our data provided the first results in terms of biochemical biomarkers for meiobenthic nematodes and showed that the selected taxa, M. pristiurus, could be one of the first marine taxa responding early to the tested stressors, zinc and permethrin, even at very low concentrations.

During a survey conducted during 2013-2017, five known and two new species of Nothotylenchus Thorne, 1941 were collected from the southern provinces of Iran. N. brzeskii n. sp. is characterised by a body length of 774-922 µm, lateral fields with four incisures, delicate, short stylet (7-8 µm) with small rounded knobs, pyriform, offset or slightly overlapping basal pharyngeal bulb, posterior vulva position (V = 83.4-84.4), short PUS (5-10 µm), spicules 20.5-23 µm long, and thick tail with rounded to dull terminus. N. siddiqi n. sp. is characterised by a body length of 573-645 µm, six to nine incisures in lateral fields, delicate, short stylet (6.5-7.5 µm) with rounded knobs, pyriform or slightly elongate and offset basal pharyngeal bulb, V = 79.3-81.0, PUS = 26.5-40 µm, short spicules = 14.5-16.5 µm, and tail with rounded terminus. Morphometric data of the studied species are presented and intraspecific variation of their morphometrics and morphological characters is discussed. The list of world Nothotylenchus species is updated, and a dichotomous identification key and an updated tabular compendium for 41 valid species are provided.

Three new species of Cloacininae are described from Dorcopsis muelleri obtained from Salawati Island and Kaimana, Papua. Cloacina woworae sp. nov. differs from all congeners by having postero-lateral and medio-lateral rays not fused and the esophagus wider anterior to the nerve ring. Compared to its congeners, C. beveridgei sp. nov. resembles C. caballeroi Mawson, 1977, C. cretheis Beveridge, 2002, C. erigone Beveridge, 2002, and C. syphax Beveridge Speare, 1999 in the morphology of the dorsal ray.  However, C. beveridgei has distal segments of sub-median papillae longer than the proximal segments. This character differentiates it from C. caballeroi, C. cretheis, and C. erigone, which have the distal segment of the sub-median papilla shorter than the proximal. Furthermore, this new species can be distinguished with C. syphax in having a shorter vagina vera and in the shape of the anterior region of the vagina. Cervonemella kaimanaensis sp. nov. differs from Ce. reardoni, the sole species in the genus Cervonemella, in the shape and longer vagina, shorter and slender tail, shorter position of vulva from posterior end and longer spicules.

The family Sphaerolaimidae Filipjev, 1918 combines nematodes characterized by finely striated cuticle, round amphids, broad buccal cavity with longitudinal ribs, and females with one anterior ovary. Sphaerolaimus Bastian, 1865 species from this family are found in intertidal and subtidal sediments and have also been reported from mangroves and estuary. Three new species of Sphaerolaimus were found and described from the South China Sea. Sphaerolaimus callisto sp. nov. is characterized by the relatively long body, small amphids and long spicules. Sphaerolaimus callisto sp. nov. is similar to S. cuneatus Paramonov, 1929, but differs by the longer body (2350-2690 µm vs 1980-1990 µm), index b (5.1-5.6 vs 3.9-4.1), absence of precolacal supplements, and longer spicules (321-356 µm vs 270 µm). Sphaerolaimus ganymede sp. nov. is characterized by large amphids and the presence of sexual dimorphism in amphid size. Sphaerolaimus ganymede sp. nov. is close to Sphaerolaimus maeoticus Filipjev, 1922, but differs by the presence of lateral alae, indexes a (12.3-17.5 vs 20-27) and c (7.9 vs 9-10), bigger amphids in male (14.6-15.7 µm vs 11 µm). Sphaerolaimus io sp. nov. is characterized by small amphids and short apophyses of gubernaculum. Sphaerolaimus io sp. nov. is similar to Sphaerolaimus pacificus Allgen, 1947, but differs by bigger size (1480-1525 µm vs 1140 µm), presence of lateral alae, and index c (7.5-8 µm vs 14.3 µm). After critical evaluation of the genus we recognize 35 valid species and provide dichotomous and pictorial keys to species.

The present work is a compilation of the systematics of the genus Tylolaimophorus (Nematoda: Diphtherophoridae). These nematodes are soil inhabitants that occur mostly in the vicinity of plant roots. An historical taxonomy, amended diagnosis and several taxonomic remarks on the genus are discussed here. A list of all 13 globally known species (and their synonyms) is given and all of them are treated here. For each species, taxonomic information including morphometric data reported worldwide, amended descriptions of females and males, diagnosis of the species and its relationships with closely related species, as well as its distribution and associated plants are discussed. Moreover, based on the most important morphological and morphometric characters, an identification key and a diagnostic compendium to the species are included. Two populations of T. minor are described and illustrated for the first time from Iran. Comparing morphological and morphometric characteristics of the Iranian populations with other populations worldwide reveals that these populations share almost all diagnostic characters except spear length, which is slightly longer in the Russian populations as compared with populations from USA, Poland and Iran.

RESUMO

Two nematode species isolated from sediments of the littoral zone of the South China Sea on the coast of Vietnam are described and illustrated. Microlaimus capitatus sp. n. is closely related to M. affinis Gerlach, 1958 and M. amphidius Kamran et al., 2009, but differs by having a thin, poorly developed pharyngostom, more posterior vulva and presence of terminal setae on the tail. The female of Dichromadora simplex Timm, 1961 is described and illustrated for the first time.

The diversity of free-living aquatic nematodes is largely unknown for the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. The Cuban Archipelago is an important part of this because of its large area and diversity of habitats. We analyzed the free-living nematodes from 83 sites from seven aquatic habitats around Cuba, to produce a checklist for many habitats, including seagrass meadows, coral degradation zones, algal turf, bare sands, unvegetated muds, freshwater and anchihaline caves, and deep-sea sediments. The checklist contains 469 species, 229 genera, 50 families, and 9 orders. Chromadorida, Enoplida, and Monhysterida were the best represented orders with 112, 100, and 83 species respectively. The most abundant species were Euchromadora vulgaris, Terschellingia longicaudata, Desmodora pontica, Sabatieria pulchra , and Epsilonema sp. Most of the listed species were new records for the region. There were differences in the number of species recorded in each habitat type, with seagrass meadows having 280 species, coral degradation zones having 139 species, deep waters having 116 species, algal turf having 114 species, bare sands having 100 species, unvegetated muds having 78 species, freshwater caves having 19 species, anchihaline caves having 16 species, and freshwater streams having 6 species. The checklist is the most comprehensive recent report of the diversity of free-living nematodes in the regions of Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. The reported diversity is higher than many other regional checklists likely reflecting the intense sampling effort and the variety of microhabitats in Cuban Archipelago.

A new species of the genus Cephalanticoma is described for the Atlantic Ocean in the Potiguar Basin off the continental shelf of northeast Brazil. Cephalanticoma rugatusa sp. n. is characterized by bearing head capsule ending on the level of amphideal fovea, a tubular precloacal supplement and two rows of thin precloacal setae. Cephalanticoma rugatusa sp. n. differs from all other species of the genus by having a precloacal cuticular papilla in front of the cloaca and a cuticular transversal wrinkle which extends from the papilla elevation to the conical-cylindrical portion of the tail occupying both subventral regions. An emended diagnosis and a dichotomous key to species based on both genders are provided.

A new species of the genus Pratylenchoides has been described. It was found in Polish Jurassic Highland, in Ojców National Park. Pratylenchoides ojcowensis sp. nov. was isolated from the soil located around tangled roots of Elymus sp. and Trifolium sp. This species is marked by a conical head in both females and males which is not separated from the body contour and has with 4-5 annuli; a relatively short stylet (20.3-21.3 µm females, 17.7-20.9 µm males) with oval knobs directed posteriorly; the dorsal pharyngeal nucleus located anterior to the cardia (the subventral pharyngeal nuclei located posterior; a pharyngeal lobe of length about two body widths (1.8-2.6); a lateral field with 6 lines in the middle part of body and sometimes with partially areolated outer bands; intestinal fasciculi present; round sperm in the spermatheca in females; a female tail with a maximum of 29 annuli, and an annulated tail terminus. The status of the new species has been verifiied by DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the 28S rDNA region. The results obtained in the study indicated that P. ojcowensis sp. nov. is most related to P. alkani, P. ritteri and P. nevadensis from which is distinguished by the shape of the female head (conoid vs rounded), shorter stylet in females (20.3-21.3 µm vs 22.0-25.0 µm, 21.0-25.0 µm, 22.0-26.0 µm) and differences in 28S rDNA sequences. In addition (as per the original descriptions Yüksel 1977, Sher 1970, Talavera Tobar 1996) it is distinguished from P. alkani by smaller number of male's head annuli (4-5 vs 7-9), from P. ritteri it is distinguished by posteriorly directed stylet knobs (vs directed laterally), from P. nevadensis it is distinguished by oval and posteriorly directed stylet knobs (vs rounded and directed laterally).

Polkepsilonema arabicensis sp. n. is discovered from the coralline sand of Lakshadweep island, located off the south-western coast of India. The species differs from other congeners by its unique combination of characters: presence of fine spines along the body curvatures, 5-6 rows of bisinuous ambulatory setae, male with two clusters of ventral copulatory thorns and 14 subcephalic sensilla. The novel species is the fourth discovery of the genus and first record from the coastal areas of Indian subcontinent. A key to species level is provided.

RESUMO

One unrecorded species of free-living marine nematodes from the South China Sea is described as Wieseria bicepes sp. nov. The present species is characterized by three circles of anterior sensilla nearly equal in length; four cephalic setae just behind the outer labial setae; oblong amphideal fovea with double contours and a handle-like protrusion at the base; tail tip bifurcate; spicules slightly curved with proximally cephalated and distally tapered; gubernaculum absent. The species is easily distinguished from the congeneric species by tail with a bifurcate tip and cephalic setae closely adjacent to labial setae.

RESUMO

Males of Enterobius (Colobenterobius) serratus Hasegawa et al., 2003 (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) are described for the first time based on six individuals collected from the feces of proboscis monkeys, Nasalis larvatus, in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. The males show identical cephalic morphology to females, being readily distinguishable from their congeners by the serrated inner margins of the lips. The bicolored esophageal corpus, long thin spicule and developed spicular pouch with paired muscular bands are also remarkable characteristics, presumably shared by other Asian members of the subgenus.
