STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of sleep bruxism (SB) in adults with primary snoring (PS). METHODS: This study included 292 adults with PS (140 males, 152 females; mean age ± SD = 42.8 ±12.2 years; mean BMI ± SD = 26.7 ± 4.7 kg/m2) without previous treatment for snoring. SB was diagnosed based on the frequency of the biomarker of SB: rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA; SB when RMMA ≥ 2 episodes/hour). Logistic regression was performed, with SB as the dependent variable and with age, sex, BMI, and sleep- and respiratory-related polysomnographic parameters as the independent variables to identify the risk factors for SB. RESULTS: The prevalence of SB was 44.6% in adults with PS. Younger age (OR = 0.965 [0.944, 0.987]) and shorter total sleep time (OR = 0.760 [0.609, 0.948]) significantly increased the risk of SB (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: SB is highly prevalent in adults with PS. Younger age and shorter sleep time are significant risk factors for SB in adults with PS. BACKGROUND: Most of the respiratory events in adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs in supine position. It has been reported that the contraction of masseter muscles is dependent on the occurrence of arousals rather than on the occurrence of respiratory events. OBJECTIVES: This study had two aims: (1) to compare the rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) index in supine position (RMMA_sup) and in non-supine positions (RMMA_nsup) in adults with OSA; and (2) to determine the associations between RMMA index in both supine position and non-supine positions on the one hand, and several demographic and polysomnographic variables on the other hand. METHODS: One hundred OSA participants (36 females and 64 males; mean age = 50.3 years (SD = 10.5)) were selected randomly from among patients with a full-night polysomnographic recording. RMMA_sup index and RMMA_nsup index were compared using Mann-Whitney U-test. Multivariate linear regression analyses were used to predict RMMA index both in supine and non-supine positions based on several demographic and polysomnographic variables. RESULTS: In patients with OSA, the RMMA_sup index was significantly higher than the RMMA_nsup index (p < .001). RMMA_sup index was significantly associated with the arousal index (p = .002) and arousal index in supine position (p < .001). RMMA_nsup index was only significantly associated with the arousal index in non-supine positions (p = .004). CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, RMMAs occur more frequently in supine position than in non-supine positions in patients with OSA. In both sleep positions, RMMAs are associated with arousals.

OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to present and describe the Standardised Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism (STAB), an instrument that was developed to provide a multidimensional evaluation of bruxism status, comorbid conditions, aetiology and consequences. METHODS: The rationale for creating the tool and the road map that led to the selection of items included in the STAB has been discussed in previous publications. RESULTS: The tool consists of two axes, specifically dedicated to the evaluation of bruxism status and consequences (Axis A) and of bruxism risk and etiological factors and comorbid conditions (Axis B). The tool includes 14 domains, accounting for a total of 66 items. Axis A includes the self-reported information on bruxism status and possible consequences (subject-based report) together with the clinical (examiner report) and instrumental (technology report) assessment. The Subject-Based Assessment (SBA) includes domains on Sleep Bruxism (A1), Awake Bruxism (A2) and Patient's Complaints (A3), with information based on patients' self-report. The Clinically Based Assessment (CBA) includes domains on Joints and Muscles (A4), Intra- and Extra-Oral Tissues (A5) and Teeth and Restorations (A6), based on information collected by an examiner. The Instrumentally Based Assessment (IBA) includes domains on Sleep Bruxism (A7), Awake Bruxism (A8) and the use of Additional Instruments (A9), based on the information gathered with the use of technological devices. Axis B includes the self-reported information (subject-based report) on factors and conditions that may have an etiological or comorbid association with bruxism. It includes domains on Psychosocial Assessment (B1), Concurrent Sleep-related Conditions Assessment (B2), Concurrent Non-Sleep Conditions Assessment (B3), Prescribed Medications and Use of Substances Assessment (B4) and Additional Factors Assessment (B5). As a rule, whenever possible, existing instruments, either in full or partial form (i.e. specific subscales), are included. A user's guide for scoring the different items is also provided to ease administration. CONCLUSIONS: The instrument is now ready for on-field testing and further refinement. It can be anticipated that it will help in collecting data on bruxism in such a comprehensive way to have an impact on several clinical and research fields.

BACKGROUND: To assess awake and sleep bruxism, the Standardised Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism (STAB) is currently being developed. The STAB will be a comprehensive tool for the detailed assessment of bruxism behaviour itself as well as of its possible consequences, causes, and comorbid conditions. OBJECTIVE: Since the STAB cannot fully meet the 'A4 principle' for a bruxism assessment tool, i.e., being Accurate (reliable and valid), Applicable (feasible), Affordable (cost-effective), and Accessible (suitable for everyday clinical use), the Bruxism Screener (BruxScreen) has been developed to be used in large-scale epidemiological research projects and, especially, in general, dental practices. METHODS: The BruxScreen consists of two parts: a questionnaire (BruxScreen-Q) to be completed by patients, and a clinical assessment form (BruxScreen-C) to be completed by dentists. RESULTS: This paper describes the development of the BruxScreen and provides the outcomes of the pilot testing phase and the face validity assessment (i.e. that the first impressions of the tool indicate that it adequately reflects the construct to be measured). CONCLUSION: The resulting BruxScreen is considered ready for more profound psychometric testing in the general dental setting.

PURPOSE: To compare the anatomical balance and shape of the upper airway in the supine position between adults with positional obstructive sleep apnea (POSA) and adults with non-positional OSA (NPOSA). METHODS: Adults diagnosed with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) > 10 events/h) were assessed for eligibility. POSA was defined as the supine AHI more than twice the AHI in non-supine positions; otherwise, patients were classified as NPOSA. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging was performed for every participant while awake in the supine position. The anatomical balance was calculated as the ratio of the tongue size to the maxillomandibular enclosure size. The upper airway shape was calculated as the ratio of the anteroposterior dimension to the lateral dimension at the location of the minimal cross-sectional area of the upper airway (CSAmin-shape). RESULTS: Of 47 participants (28 males, median age [interquartile range] 56 [46 to 63] years, median AHI 27.8 [15.0 to 33.8]), 34 participants were classified as having POSA (72%). The POSA group tended to have a higher proportion of males and a lower AHI than the NPOSA group (P = 0.07 and 0.07, respectively). After controlling for both sex and AHI, the anatomical balance and CSAmin-shape were not significantly different between both groups (P = 0.18 and 0.73, respectively). CONCLUSION: Adults with POSA and adults with NPOSA have similar anatomical balance and shape of their upper airway in the supine position. PURPOSE: The existence of a bidirectional relationship between poor sleep and pain intensity has been studied, and good sleep quality has been found to be a key factor underlying pain control. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to observe if OSA treatment provides a reduction in temporo-mandibular disorder (TMD) pain and headache attributed to TMD in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after 18 months of OSA treatment. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted on consecutive patients suffering from OSA. Patients underwent polysomnography and TMD examination according to the DC/TMD protocol at baseline and after 18 months. Intensity of TMD pain and headache attributed to TMD were analyzed. RESULTS: Of 40 patients (31 men, mean age 51.3 ± 10.3 years), 33 underwent OSA treatment. At the follow-up examination after 18 months, significant improvements in the intensity of pain-related TMD and headache attributed to TMD were observed (p < 0.05). Seven patients did not start treatment for OSA or discontinued treatment. These patients did not show any significant difference in intensity of TMD-pain or headache attributed to TMD after 18 months (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Significant reductions in intensity of pain-related TMD and headache attributed to TMD were observed in patients with OSA after 18 months of OSA treatment onset, while no difference was observed in subjects not undergoing or discontinuing OSA treatment. BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent problem with significant consequences. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and oral mandibular advancement device (MAD) are considered the standard treatments for OSA. Patients may experience self-reported oral moistening disorders (OMDs) (i.e. xerostomia or drooling) at the beginning, throughout and after treatment. This affects oral health, quality of life and treatment effectiveness. The exact nature of the associations between OSA and self-reported OMD is still unknown. We aimed to provide an overview of the associations between self-reported OMD on the one hand and OSA and its treatment (namely CPAP and MAD) on the other hand. In addition, we sought to determine whether OMD affects treatment adherence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search in PubMed was performed up to 27 September 2022. Two researchers independently assessed studies for eligibility. RESULTS: In total, 48 studies were included. Thirteen papers investigated the association between OSA and self-reported OMD. They all suggested an association between OSA and xerostomia but not between OSA and drooling. The association between CPAP and OMD was addressed in 20 articles. The majority of studies have indicated xerostomia as a CPAP side effect; however, some have observed that xerostomia diminishes with CPAP therapy. In 15 papers, the association between MAD and OMD was investigated. In most publications, both xerostomia and drooling have been described as common side effects of MADs. These side effects are often mild and transient, and they improve as patients continue to use their appliance. Most studies found that these OMDs do not cause or are not a strong predictor of non-compliance. CONCLUSION: Xerostomia is a common side effect of CPAP and MAD, as well as a significant symptom of OSA. It may be regarded as one of the indicators of sleep apnoea. Moreover, MAD therapy can be associated with OMD. However, it seems that OMD may be mitigated by being adherent to the therapy.

Sleep bruxism (SB) has been associated with biological and psychosocial factors. The assessment of SB includes self-report, clinical evaluation, and polysomnography. This study aimed to investigate the associations of self-reported SB with other sleep disorders and demographic, psychological, and lifestyle factors in the adult general population, and to investigate whether self-reported SB and polysomnographically (PSG) confirmed SB provide similar outcomes in terms of their associated factors. We recruited 915 adults from the general population in Sao Paulo, Brazil. All participants underwent a one-night PSG recording and answered questions about sex, age, BMI, insomnia, OSA risk, anxiety, depression, average caffeine consumption, smoking frequency, and alcohol consumption frequency. We investigated the link between SB and the other variables in univariate, multivariate, and network models, and we repeated each model once with self-reported SB and once with PSG-confirmed SB. Self-reported SB was only significantly associated with sex (p = 0.042), anxiety (p = 0.002), and depression (p = 0.03) in the univariate analysis, and was associated with insomnia in the univariate (p < 0.001) and multivariate (ß = 1.054, 95%CI 1.018-1.092, p = 0.003) analyses. Network analysis showed that self-reported SB had a direct positive edge to insomnia, while PSG-confirmed SB was not significantly associated with any of the other variables. Thus, sleep bruxism was positively associated with insomnia only when self-reported, while PSG-confirmed SB was not associated with any of the included factors.

Aging is related to a variety of physiological organ changes, including central and peripheral nervous systems. It has been reported that the orexin signaling has a potential analgesic effect in different models of pain, especially inflammatory pulpal pain. However, the age-induced alteration in dental pain perception and orexin analgesia has not yet been fully elucidated. Here, we tested that how aging may change the effect of orexin-A on nociceptive behaviors in a rat dental pulp pain model. The expression levels of orexin receptors and the nociceptive neuropeptides substance P (SP) and calcitonin-related gene peptide (CGRP) were also assessed in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) of young and aged rats. Dental pulp pain was induced by intradental application of capsaicin (100 µg). The immunofluorescence technique was used to evaluate the expression levels. The results show less efficiency of orexin-A to ameliorate pain perception in aged rats as compared to young rats. In addition, a significant decrease in the number of orexin 1 and 2 receptors was observed in the TNC of aged as compared to young rats. Dental pain-induced SP and CGRP overexpression was also significantly inhibited by orexin-A injection into the TNC of young animals. In contrast, orexin-A could not produce such effects in the aged animals. In conclusion, the older age-related reduction of the antinociceptive effect of orexin may be due to the downregulation of its receptors and inability of orexin signaling to inhibit the expression of nociceptive neuropeptides such as SP and CGRP in aged rats.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of the severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain and dysfunction with the frequency of self-reported awake bruxism (AB), sleep bruxism (SB), and stress in an adult TMD-patient population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 237 TMD patients based on the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. Age, sex, frequency of self-reported AB and SB, and stress were included as independent variables. TMD pain and TMD dysfunction were included as dependent variables in regression analyses. Univariate and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to predict TMD pain and TMD dysfunction in two separate models. Finally, network analysis was performed to investigate the associations between all variables. RESULTS: In the univariate analyses, TMD pain was significantly associated with self-reported AB-frequent (unstandardized coefficient (B) = 3.196, 95%CI 1.198-5.195, p = 0.002). TMD dysfunction was significantly associated with AB-frequent (B = 2.208, 95%CI 0.177-4.238, p = 0.033) and SB-sometimes (B = 1.698, 95%CI 0.001-3.394, p = 0.050). In the multivariable analyses, TMD pain was significantly associated with TMD dysfunction (B = 0.370, p < 0.001), stress (B=0.102, p < 0.001). TMD dysfunction was significantly associated with TMD pain (B = 0.410, p < 0.001) only. Network analysis showed that TMD pain is a bridge factor between AB, stress, and TMD dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: TMD pain is directly associated with AB, stress, and TMD dysfunction, while TMD dysfunction is only associated with TMD pain. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Reducing pain may improve pain-related dysfunction, and the management of AB and stress may improve TMD pain and dysfunction, and vice versa.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of mandibular advancement device (MAD) therapy on upper airway dimensions between responders and non-responders with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: Thirty-one participants (21 men and 10 women) with a mean ± SD apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 16.6 ± 6.7 events/h, and aged 48.5 ± 13.9 years, were included in this study. Polysomnographic recordings and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans in supine position were performed for every participant at baseline and at 3-month follow-up with their MAD in situ. Responders were defined as having ≥ 50% reduction in baseline AHI with a residual AHI < 10 events/h. The primary outcome variable was the minimal cross-sectional area of the upper airway (CSAmin). RESULTS: No significant differences were found between responders (n = 15) and non-responders (n = 16) in age, gender distribution, body mass index, and neck circumference (P = 0.06-0.93), nor in AHI and CSAmin (P = 0.40 and 0.65, respectively) at baseline. The changes of the CSAmin with MAD in situ in the responder group were not significantly different compared to those in the non-responder group (P = 0.06). CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that the changes of the upper airway dimensions induced by MADs are not significantly different between responders and non-responders with mild to moderate OSA. BACKGROUND: Dental pain is a main clinical problem in the elderly population and its assessment and treatment make special challenges for health care services. However, the age-induced alteration in dental pain perception and the underlying molecular mechanism(s) has not yet been fully clarified. METHODS: Here, the effect of aging on nociceptive behaviors following inflammatory dental pulp pain was evaluated. Since prostaglandins, nociceptive neuropeptides, and inflammatory cytokines have critical roles in the development of aging as well as pain signaling, the expression levels of COX-2, CGRP, IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α and its converting enzyme TACE were assessed in the trigeminal ganglion of young and aged rats with dental pain. Dental pulp pain was induced by intradental application of capsaicin (100 µg). The immunofluorescence (COX-2 and CGRP) and western blot techniques were used. RESULTS: The data showed that aged animals have different pattern of pain. So that, the mean of nociceptive scores was significantly greater in aged rats at 10 and 15 min after capsaicin injection. In aged rats, dental pain was persisting over 7 h, while it was disappeared at 300 min in young rats. Molecular data showed that dental pain significantly increased the expression of COX-2, CGRP, IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α and TACE in the trigeminal ganglion of the young and aged rats. In addition, the amount of those parameters, except TACE, in capsaicin-treated aged animals were significantly (p < 0.05) greater than those in capsaicin-treated young rats. CONCLUSION: It seems that the induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in an acute inflammatory pulpal pain model may contribute, at least in part to the increased nociceptive behaviors and pain perception in aged rats.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is frequently treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or mandibular advancement devices (MADs). For various reasons, both treatment options are often affected by low adherence. While factors associated with low CPAP adherence are described in the literature extensively, less is known about adherence to MAD therapy. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the body of literature on the factors associated with adherence to MAD treatment. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using bibliographic databases PubMed, Embase.com , Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library (Wiley) to identify relevant studies that described factors associated with adherence to MAD in the treatment of OSA or snoring combined with OSA in adults. RESULTS: The literature search yielded a total of 694 references. Forty studies were found eligible for inclusion. The literature showed that factors with a possible negative influence on the adherence to MAD treatment are personality aspects; failing effectiveness of MAD; side effects during MAD therapy; using a thermoplastic MAD; dental treatments during MAD therapy; and a poor first experience with the MAD with inadequate guidance by professionals. Factors that may have a positive effect on MAD adherence include effectiveness of therapy, custom-made MAD, good communication skills of the practitioner, early recognition of side effects, stepwise titration of the MAD, and positive first experience with MAD. CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge of factors associated with MAD adherence can be used to provide further insight into individual adherence to OSA treatments.

PURPOSE: To describe the temporal association between leg movements (LMs) and respiratory events in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and to quantify the difference in scoring respiratory-related leg movement (RRLM) between the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) criterion and the criterion recommended by the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM). METHODS: Patients with OSA who presented with > 10 LMs of any type per hour of sleep were included in this study. For each participant, RRLMs were scored using both the AASM criterion and the recommended WASM criterion. The occurrence of LMs in relation to respiratory events and the difference in scoring RRLM between the AASM criterion and the criterion recommended by the WASM were quantified. RESULTS: In 32 patients enrolled, mean age was 48.1 ± 11.0 years and 78% were men. LMs were significantly more frequent after respiratory events, followed by before respiratory events, and were rare during respiratory events (P < 0.01). Compared with the AASM criterion, more LMs were classified as RRLMs based on the recommended WASM criterion (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: LMs are more frequent after respiratory events than before and during respiratory events, and more LMs are scored as RRLMs based on the recommended WASM criterion than based on the AASM criterion.

This study aims to assess (i) which acoustic characteristics of snoring sounds are associated with the annoying nature of snoring sounds; (ii) whether listeners' heart rates correlate with their perceived annoyance; and (iii) whether perceived annoyance is different between listeners with different experiences with their bedpartners' snoring sounds. Six snoring epochs with distinct acoustic characteristics (viz., reference, high pitch, high intensity, short interval, irregular intensity, and irregular intervals) were collected from snoring patients. Twenty physicians and technicians were involved in the healthcare of snoring patients, and were divided into three groups based on personal experience with their bedpartners' snoring sounds (viz., non-snoring, snoring but not annoying, and snoring and annoying). The test subjects listened to each epoch and rated its level of annoyance. Listeners' heart rates were also recorded during the test using a finger plethysmograph. Within the limitations of this study, it was found that, compared with other snoring sounds, snoring sounds with high intensity and irregularity were associated with higher perceived annoyance. However, higher perceived annoyance of snoring sound was not reflected in heart rate-related parameters. In addition, listeners' personal experiences do not seem to affect their perceived annoyance.

PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is complex and may vary between different races. It has been suggested that the anatomical balance between skeletal tissues and soft tissues around the upper airway is a key pathophysiologic factor of OSA. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the anatomical balance of the upper airway between Dutch and Chinese patients with OSA based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study performed in two centers and included Dutch and Chinese adults with OSA. CBCT scans in the supine position were obtained for both Dutch and Chinese OSA groups. The primary outcome variable was the anatomical balance of the upper airway, defined as the ratio of the tongue area and the maxillomandibular enclosure area. RESULTS: A total of 28 Dutch adults (mean age ± SD of 46.6 ± 14.1 years, body mass index [BMI] of 26.8 ± 3.5 kg/m2, and apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] of 15.7 ± 7.1 events/h) and 24 Chinese adults (age 41.0 ± 12.4 years, BMI 26.5 ± 3.3 kg/m2, and AHI 16.5 ± 7.8 events/h). There were no significant differences in AHI, age, BMI, and sex between the two groups (P = 0.14-0.76). The Dutch group had a significantly larger tongue area and tongue length compared to the Chinese group (P = 0.01 and P < 0.01). On the other hand, the Chinese group had a smaller maxilla length compared to the Dutch group (P < 0.01). However, the anatomical balance of the upper airway of both groups was not significantly different (P = 0.16). CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, no significant difference was found in the anatomical balance of the upper airway between Dutch and Chinese patients with mild to moderate OSA. STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and mandibular advancement appliance (MAA) therapy on rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA), a biomarker of sleep bruxism (SB), and to compare the effects of CPAP with MAA in adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: This cohort study included individuals with OSA who received treatment with CPAP or MAA. Polysomnographic recordings with and without therapy were performed in each individual. Statistical analyses were performed with repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: A total of 38 individuals with OSA were enrolled, 13 on CPAP and 25 with MAA, mean age 52.6 ± 10.6 years, 32 men, mean baseline apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) 26.5 ± 15.2 events/hour, mean RMMA index 3.5 ±events/hour. In the total group, the RMMA index decreased significantly with CPAP and MAA therapies (P < 0.05). The changes in the RMMA index with therapy did not differ significantly between CPAP and MAA (P > 0.05). The RMMA index decreased in 60% of the individuals with OSA, and the changes ranged widely, with a median of 52% and an interquartile range of 107%. CONCLUSIONS: Both CPAP and MAA therapies significantly reduce SB in individuals with OSA. However, the interindividual differences in the effects of these therapies on SB are large. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of two types of titratable mandibular advancement devices (MADs), namely MAD-H (allowing limited vertical opening) and MAD-S (allowing free vertical opening), on respiratory parameters and upper airway dimensions in patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with mild to moderate OSA (5 ≤ apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) < 30 /h) were randomly assigned to two parallel MAD groups. All MADs were subjectively titrated according to a standardized protocol during a 3-month follow-up. Every patient underwent two polysomnographic recordings, and two cone beam computed tomography scans in supine position: one at baseline and another one after 3 months with the MAD in situ. The primary outcome variables were the AHI in supine position (AHI-supine) and the minimal cross-sectional area of the upper airway in supine position (CSAmin-supine). RESULTS: A total of 49 patients were recruited, and 31 patients (21 men and 10 women) with a mean (± SD) age of 48.5 (± 13.9) years and a mean AHI of 16.6 (± 6.7) /h completed the study. In the per-protocol analysis, there was no significant difference between MAD-H (n = 16) and MAD-S (n = 15) in their effects on AHI-supine (P = 0.14) and CSAmin-supine (P = 0.59). Similar results were found in the intention-to-treat analysis (P = 0.47 and 0.57, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that there is no significant difference in the effects of an MAD allowing limited vertical opening and an MAD allowing free vertical opening on respiratory parameters and upper airway dimensions in patients with mild to moderate OSA. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: MADs allowing limited vertical opening and allowing free vertical opening have similar effects on respiratory parameters and upper airway dimensions in patients with mild to moderate OSA. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of frequently reported between-individual (viz., age, gender, body mass index [BMI], and apnea-hypopnea index [AHI]) and within-individual (viz., sleep stage and sleep position) snoring sound-related factors on snoring sound parameters in temporal, intensity, and frequency domains. METHODS: This study included 83 adult snorers (mean ± SD age: 42.2 ± 11.3 yrs; male gender: 59%) who underwent an overnight polysomnography (PSG) and simultaneous sound recording, from which a total of 131,745 snoring events were extracted and analyzed. Data on both between-individual and within-individual factors were extracted from the participants' PSG reports. RESULTS: Gender did not have any significant effect on snoring sound parameters. The fundamental frequency (FF; coefficient = -0.31; P = 0.02) and dominant frequency (DF; coefficient = -12.43; P < 0.01) of snoring sounds decreased with the increase of age, and the second formant increased (coefficient = 22.91; P = 0.02) with the increase of BMI. Severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA; AHI ≥30 events/hour), non-rapid eye movement sleep stage 3 (N3), and supine position were all associated with more, longer, and louder snoring events (P < 0.05). Supine position was associated with higher FF and DF, and lateral decubitus positions were associated with higher formants. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of the current patient profile and included factors, AHI was found to have greater effects on snoring sound parameters than the other between-individual factors. The included within-individual factors were found to have greater effects on snoring sound parameters than the between-individual factors under study.
