BACKGROUND: According to the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative, Sri Lanka ranked as number one and only country to achieve green status. Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for six months is current practice with a rate of 75.5% among 0-5 months. AIM: Identify factors contributing early cessation of breastfeeding in a single centre of Eastern province Sri Lanka. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in Sammanthurai Medical officer of Health area. Consecutive mother-infant days with the infant ageing < 6 months were included from 25 public health midwife areas using an interviewer administered questionnaire. Missing values imputed using 'missForest' algorithm. RESULTS: The mean age of the sample was 28.4(SD ± 5.6). Of the 257 mothers recruited, 15(5.8%) were teenagers and 42(16.3%) > 35 years. 251(97.6%) had children 1-5 and 86(33.5%) were first born. 140 (54.5%) had tertiary education, 28 (10.9%).31(12.1%) were employed. EBF rates 0-6 months was 79.8% (n = 205). 239(93.0%) started breastfeeding within an hour. EBF was not associated with maternal age, birth order or income. 18 employed mothers and 186 unemployed mothers continued EBF. Regarding the factors associated with EBF, having a tertiary education (p < .001), being employed (p = .004) and having less than 3 children (p = .03) were associated with non-exclusive breastfeeding. Tertiary education was the significant predictor of non-exclusive breastfeeding in this population with an odds ratio of 4.50 (95% CI 1.331-15.215). CONCLUSION: Employment identified as a risk factor for early cessation of EBF needs well planned further research to overcome this practical issue. Also might need revision of workplace policies, establishment of lactation areas in office premises to overcome some of these issues.

We investigated the physicochemical properties and the biotic interactions of breeding sites of tropical mosquito species. Field sampling was done in 12 study areas in Sri Lanka covering areas with secondary natural forests and human settlements. A total of 226 breeding sites were investigated to determine the biotic interactions and physiochemical properties of breeding water (pH, Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen, Total Dissolved Solids and Temperature). A total of 80.5% of breeding sites from both habitats were positive for mosquito larvae of seven genera and 24 species. Orthopodomyia flavithorax (297) and Aedes albopictus (295) were dominated in tree holes of Alstonia macrophylla, Vateria copallifera and Artocarpus nobilis. Diversity indices showed that the diversity of mosquitoes is high in wet zone habitats of Sri Lanka compared to dry and intermediate zone habitats. Aedes albopictus coexisted with 11 different mosquito species while it avoided larvae of Culex fuscanus, Cx. uniformis and Tripteroides affinis. Strong positive associations were reported between Ae. albopictus and Ar. subalbatus while larvae of Or. flavithorax mosquitoes were not co-occurred with the larvae of Ae. vittatus, Ae. aegypti, Cx. sitiens, Ar. subalbatus, Anopheles spp and Tr. affinis. The findings identified the breeding adaptability and tolerance to a wide range of physiochemical properties of tropical mosquito communities.

The purpose of this research was to study chemical characteristics of precipitation in Peradeniya (Latitude 6.973701, Longitude 79.915256), Kandy District in Sri Lanka. This study was conducted during 2012 to 2014, and wet precipitation was analyzed for pH, conductivity, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, F-, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, Pb, Cu, Mn, Al, Zn, and Fe for a total of 125 samples. Less than 2% events of acidic precipitation were recorded, and the VWA of the major ionic species present in precipitation samples were in the order of Ca2+ > Na+ > Cl- > NH4+ > SO42- > K+ > NO3- > Mg2+. Neutralization of acidity of precipitation is much more related to CaCO3 than NH3, and the presence of high content of Ca2+ strongly supports this fact. When considering marine contribution, SO42-/Na+, Ca2+/Na+, Mg2+/Na+, and K+/Na+ ratios are higher than the reference value suggesting that contribution of sources other than marine. Concentration of Zn is the highest while that of Mn is the lowest. Principal component analysis identified probable sources for major ionic and elemental sources as both natural and anthropogenic sources such as vehicular emission due to heavy traffic, waste incineration, bio mass burning, brass industry, and construction.
