RESUMEN

AIM: In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to test a new carvacrol-based product designed to delay the carvacrol release so that it could reach the caeca of broiler chickens in order to control Campylobacter jejuni. METHODS AND RESULTS: Antimicrobial activity of carvacrol, a constituent of oregano and thyme essential oil, has been demonstrated against C. jejuni in vitro, and this compound was found beneficial for broiler growth. Here, we tested a new liquid formulation that did not change the antibacterial efficacy of carvacrol against C. jejuni in vitro, as assessed by broth microdilution. The mode of action of carvacrol also remained unchanged as illustrated by electronic microscopy. A pharmacokinetic assay monitored carvacrol of the solid galenic formulation in the avian digestive tract and this showed that this compound was mainly found in the last part (caeca, large intestine) and in the droppings. Extremely low concentrations of free carvacrol were present in blood plasma, with larger amounts of carvacrol metabolites: carvacrol glucuronide and sulphate. A qPCR analysis showed that the solid galenic form of carvacrol added at 5 kg per tonne of food (i.e. 9·5 mg of carvacrol per kg of bodyweight per day) significantly decreased the C. jejuni caecal load by 1·5 log. CONCLUSIONS: The new liquid formulation was as effective as unformulated carvacrol in vitro. In vivo the solid galenic form seems to delay the carvacrol release into the caeca and presented interesting results on C. jejuni load after 35 days. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Results suggested that this product could be promising to control Campylobacter contamination of broilers.

OBJECTIVES: To explore relationships between scuba diving activity, brain, and behaviour, and more specifically between global cerebral blood flow (CBF) or cognitive performance and total, annual, or last 6 months' frequencies, for standard dives or dives performed below 40 m, in cold water or warm sea geographical environments. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was used to examine divers from diving clubs around Lac Léman and Geneva University Hospital. The subjects were 215 healthy recreational divers (diving with self-contained underwater breathing apparatus). Main outcome measures were: measurement of global CBF by (133)Xe SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography); psychometric and neuropsychological tests to assess perceptual-motor abilities, spatial discrimination, attentional resources, executive functioning, and memory; evaluation of scuba diving activity by questionnaire focusing on number and maximum depth of dives and geographical site of the diving activity (cold water v warm water); and body composition analyses (BMI). RESULTS: (1) A negative influence of depth of dives on CBF and its combined effect with BMI and age was found. (2) A specific diving environment (more than 80% of dives in lakes) had a negative effect on CBF. (3) Depth and number of dives had a negative influence on cognitive performance (speed, flexibility and inhibition processing in attentional tasks). (4) A negative effect of a specific diving environment on cognitive performance (flexibility and inhibition components) was found. CONCLUSIONS: Scuba diving may have long-term negative neurofunctional effects when performed in extreme conditions, namely cold water, with more than 100 dives per year, and maximal depth below 40 m.

Amputation of the lower leg is not uncommon in elderly patients with chronic infections or vascular problems of the leg and foot, and most often it is performed below the knee or on the distal part of the lower leg (i.e., Syme's amputation). After operation, healing disorders with or without infection can occur, and usually structural imaging methods are performed for diagnosis. Radionuclide imaging using a combination of bone scans and infection scintigraphy can help to identify bone and soft tissue infection. Interpreting radionuclide scans is difficult, because imaging findings after amputation may depend not only on the level of resection and the disease investigated but also on the time that has elapsed since surgery. Typical imaging patterns of bone or infection scintigraphy of five patients are described

AIM: The objective of this study was to compare screening ultrasound (US) obtained in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck with F-18-FDG PET and to evaluate if US obtained before F-18-FDG PET has the potential to enhance patient management by the detection of additional lesions. METHOD: 28 patients were prospectively included in the study (7 females and 21 males; range: 28-82 years). All had one follow-up examination after surgical treatment and/or radiotherapy using a combination of US and F-18-FDG PET on the same day (6-35 months after the end of treatment). Outcome was determined by either biopsyproven cancer recurrence or negative clinical follow-up for additional 6 months after this examination. RESULTS: Regarding only the regions of the neck evaluated with both methods, US detected 25 suspect lesions vs. 9 lesions detected by F-18-FDG PET. Descriptive statistical analysis showed better sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of F-18-FDG PET. Only in 3 patients a lesion was detected in the same anatomical region using both methods. One patient was false positive with both methods. In another patient US detected a calcified right carotid artery plaque that lead to surgical therapy. CONCLUSION: F-18-FDG PET is better for the detection of clinically relevant lesions in the follow-up of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. In this study, the additional value of morphological information obtained by screening US performed before the PET scan is limited. US may not be a suitable test to improve interpretation of PET examinations.
