RESUMEN

Electrical injuries can occur in pregnant women but currently their incidence is not completely known. Notwithstanding, those represent clinical important events such maternal and fetal death, which can be avoided if properly managed. The objective of this paper is to describe the results of electrical injury (high and low voltage), in pregnant women in scientific reports. A systematic search was performed with keywords "electrical injuries", "lightning injuries", "lightning strike", "pregnant women" and "pregnancy", using the databases: MedLine, Scielo, Lilacs, Clinical key, Web of Science, Scopus, Springer, Science Direct, Embase and Medic Latina. Filters like language, time, design and availability of text were not used. Descriptive analyses were carried out for variables such as maternal-fetal consequences, voltage and type of exposure, based on the reports identified. From the total 74 cases identified, 71.1% survived after the exposition. From the total live-births 28.6% did not show any alteration, 7.1% presented maceration and burns, while 64.3% had another outcome. Electric injury leads to fetal compromise and death in exposed pregnant women, mainly in the first hours after the injury. However, monitoring should be continued for the risk of complications such as placenta abruption, oligohydramnios and fetal distress. It is possible an underreporting of these events.

RESUMEN

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is involved in cell growth, proliferation and differentiation in bone marrow in an autocrine-paracrine manner, and it modulates normal and neoplastic haematopoietic cell proliferation. This study aimed to assess expressions of the RAS components, renin, angiotensinogen and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), during imatinib mesylate treatment of patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). Expressions of RAS components were studied in patients with CML at the time of diagnosis (n = 83) and at 3, 6 and 12 months after diagnosis (n = 35) by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. De novo CML patients had increased ACE, angiotensinogen and renin mRNA levels and these expression levels decreased following administration of imatinib. The RAS activities were significantly different among Sokal risk groups of CML, highlighting the altered biological activity of RAS in neoplastic disorders. The results of this study confirm that haematopoietic RAS affects neoplastic cell production, which may be altered via administration of tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as imatinib mesylate.

RESUMEN

The content of α-glucoxidase in two varieties of honey covered by the Granada Honey Protected Denomination of Origin Regulatory Board is studied. The evolution of invertase activity was followed for 10 months, in 12 monofloral chestnut honey samples collected in the Alpujarra area of Granada and 9 monofloral rosemary honey samples collected in la Resinera, Valle de Lecrin and in the Sierra de Baza for 10 months. The invertase was measured in the months of June 2005, September 2005, January 2006 and finally in the month of April 2006. We obtained an invertase activity in fresh chestnut honey of 194.6±3.6 U/kg, with a range between 188.7 U/kg and 199.5 U/kg. After 10 months at ambient temperature, the chestnut honey lost between 28.3% and 39.8% of the initial values of α-glucosidase, with an average of 33.4%±3.3%. In the rosemary honey we obtained average invertase values of 69.4±14.9 U/kg, with a range between 56.9 U/kg and 91.9 U/kg. After 10 months at ambient temperature, the rosemary honey lost between 19.3% and 32.3% of the initial α-glucosidase values, with an average of 28.1%±4.4%(AU)

Intrathecal application of chemotherapeutics has been the mainstay of central nervous system prophylaxis in acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment. We describe a patient who developed acute cerebellar syndrome after prophylactic intrathecal methotrexate administration and recovered spontaneously. To our knowledge, this is the first case of methotrexate-related acute cerebellar syndrome.
