Burns affect 11 million people worldwide annually. Electrical burns are renowned for inflicting extensive harm and long-term consequences that can lead to severe illnesses and fatalities. People in both occupational and non-occupational settings may be exposed to electrical burns, leading to functional or anatomical consequences. We identified sociodemographic features related to electrical burns in both settings. A cross sectional design, using an open dataset of electrical shock injuries occurred in Colombia during 2010-2021 period, was carried out. Sociodemographic features of people injured in occupational and non-occupational settings were described in counts (%), incidence per 100.000 people (I0;95% CI). To identify related factors (age-sex adjusted) with injuries in occupational and non-occupational settings, we applied a Binary Logistic Regression. Over the 12-year period, there were 1.274 electrical burns (I0: 2.47;2.34-2.61), 287 in the occupational setting (I0: 1.35;1.20-1.51) and 987 in the non-occupational setting (I0: 3.25;3.05-3.46). Age median was 31 years, most cases distributed in middle adulthood (52.8%), males (88.1%), high school/technician (42.8%), urban location (73.7%), weekdays (95.3%), and daytime hours (85.5%). Factors related to electrical burns in the occupational setting were males, middle adulthood, high school/technician, Thursday, and daytime hours. Otherwise, factors related to electrical burns in the non-occupational setting were early childhood, primary school, urban location, and weekends. Both settings pose a risk of injuries to individuals. We have identified sociodemographic factors related to these injuries in both occupational and non-occupational settings, which could aid in preventing damages and long-term complications, especially among vulnerable subgroups such as determined above.

In this case study, the authors discuss a special situation infectious disease alert process for first responders. Issues explored include the development of this infectious disease alert process and legal issues that the DuPage County Health Department addressed to share protected health information between public health and public safety. The authors illustrate the important relationship between a local health department and its legal counsel as they balanced the needs of different stakeholder groups and identified a solution that satisfied both without infringing on individual privacy. The case study closes with a discussion regarding the value of multisector collaborations and opportunities to improve information sharing between sectors.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory and multifactorial disease that affects the periodontal structures and can cause alterations in the hepatic tissue. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether a diet with food restriction can decrease oral and liver alterations associated with ligature-induced periodontitis. METHODS: Twenty-four female Wistar rats were used in this study, randomized into three groups (n = 8 for each group): control (regular food); periodontitis (regular food + periodontitis induced with ligatures); and food restriction (diet with food restriction and periodontitis induction). The following periodontium parameters were analyzed tooth mobility (TM), probing pocket depth (PPD), gingival bleeding index (GBI), and alveolar bone height (ABH). In the liver, the levels of oxidative stress markers-malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), total cholesterol, and levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity were measured. Liver samples were analyzed for histopathological score. In the blood tissue, the levels of enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), glucose, total cholesterol, and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were also evaluated. RESULTS: The animals that received a diet with food restriction + periodontitis showed a decrease in hepatic histopathological score (P < 0.05) when compared with the periodontitis group, the same for glucose, total cholesterol, ALT, AST, and ABH data. The group with food restriction + periodontitis showed a decrease in the histopathological liver score (P < 0.05) compared with the group with periodontitis. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that food restriction reduced oral damages, as well as hepatic, blood and alveolar bone alterations associated with ligature-induced periodontitis in rats.

INTRODUCTION: As part of a quality improvement (QI) project undertaken during the 2018 edition of the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Quality Training Program (QTP), we evaluated our practice's compliance to 70 measures regarding the Core, Symptom/Toxicity and Breast Cancer modules from the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) database. Thirteen measures were identified as being consistently low in documentation rate in our medical records (MR). METHODS: After establishing a multidisciplinary QI team, we defined to accomplish 100% documentation rate of these 13 QOPI measures in ≥ 80% of the monthly new patient MRs during the 6-month QTP. We designed a Microsoft Word MR template and implemented a new pre-consultation process. Monthly Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles were conducted to assess the performance of the intervention. RESULTS: After the 6-month QI intervention, > 80% of our monthly MRs achieved 100% compliance to the aimed-for 13 QOPI measures. Furthermore, our new pre-consultation process proved to be valuable in facilitating the documentation of data without interfering with the oncology appointment. CONCLUSION: The development of a systematic QI approach effectively enhanced our compliance to 13 QOPI measures over a 6-month period. These results led to the standardization of the current model of care at our institution. To our knowledge, Hospital Zambrano Hellion's Breast Cancer Center is the first Mexican cancer center to pursue a QOPI certified practice.
