BACKGROUND: Clinical practice recommendations for macronutrient intake in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) are insufficiently grounded in the research, possibly due to a paucity of research in key areas necessary to support macronutrient recommendations. An initial scoping review, prior to any systematic review, was determined to be vital. OBJECTIVES: To identify topical areas in macronutrients and MBS with a sufficient evidence base to guide nutrition recommendations. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane, Ovid Medline, and Embase were initially searched in January 2019 (updated November 1, 2023) with terms encompassing current bariatric surgeries and macronutrients. Out of 757 records identified, 98 were included. A template was created. Five types of outcomes were identified for extraction: dietary intake, anthropometrics, adverse symptoms, health, and metabolic outcomes. All stages of screening and extraction were conducted independently by at least two authors and disagreements were resolved via team discussion. Macronutrient-related dietary treatments were classified as either innovative or standard of care. Descriptions of dietary arms were extracted in detail for a qualitatively generated typology of dietary or nutritional treatments. Heatmaps (treatments by outcomes) were produced to identify promising topics for further systematic analyses. RESULTS: We identified protein supplementation and "food-focused" (e.g., portion-controlled meals, particular foods in the diet, etc.) topical areas in MBS nutrition care with potentially sufficient evidence to create specific MBS Macronutrients guidelines and identified topical areas with little research. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical practice regarding macronutrient intake remains guided by consensus and indirect evidence. We detail ways that leadership at the profession level may remedy this.

BACKGROUND: Promoting habitual physical activity (PA) among bariatric patients is crucial for long-term surgery success, yet it poses a significant challenge for healthcare practitioners. OBJECTIVES: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to examine the effectiveness of a theory-based behavioral intervention on PA level in post-metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) patients. SETTING: University Hospital, Israel METHODS: Forty-four patients undergoing MBS were randomized to the intervention (n = 22) or control group (n = 22). The intervention group received a 6-month PA counseling program based on self-determination theory (SDT) and the 5 A's framework, while the control group received usual care. PA level and self-efficacy for exercise (SEE) were assessed pre- (baseline, preintervention) and postoperatively (14 and 28 weeks follow-ups). Anthropometrics, physical function, cardiovascular, and biochemical outcomes were measured at all time points. RESULTS: The intervention group showed greater increases in PA levels across time compared to the control group. A significant increase in step counts from baseline to 14 weeks was observed (P = .003). Significant differences favoring the intervention group were observed in self-reported PA changes from baseline to 14- and 28-week follow-ups (P = .020 and P = .024, respectively). Additionally, Physical function, as assessed by the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and the 5 sit-to-stand (5STS) test, significantly improved in the intervention group throughout the follow-up period (P < .05 for all), However, no between-group differences were observed in SEE, anthropometrics, cardiovascular, or biochemical parameters. CONCLUSIONS: A 6-month behavioral intervention post-MBS significantly enhanced patients' PA levels and physical function. Given its theory-based approach and structured protocol, this intervention could be disseminated to support MBS clinicians and centers. Further research with longer follow-up period is warranted to confirm these findings and assess the long-term effects.

Nutrition-focused interventions are essential to optimize the bariatric care process and improve health and weight outcomes over time. Clear and detailed reporting of these interventions in research reports is crucial for understanding and applying the findings effectively in clinical practice and research replication. Given the importance of reporting transparency in research, this study aimed to use the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) checklist to evaluate the completeness of intervention reporting in nutritional weight management interventions adjunct to metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS). The secondary aim was to examine the factors associated with better reporting. A literature search in PubMed, PsychINFO, EMBASE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials was conducted to include randomized controlled trials (RCT), quasi-RCTs and parallel group trials. A total of 22 trials were included in the final analysis. Among the TIDieR 12 items, 6.6 ± 1.9 items were fully reported by all studies. None of the studies completely reported all intervention descriptors. The main areas where reporting required improvement were providing adequate details of the materials and procedures of the interventions, intervention personalization, and intervention modifications during the study. The quality of intervention reporting remained the same after vs. before the release of the TIDieR guidelines. Receiving funds from industrial organizations (p = 0.02) and having the study recorded within a registry platform (p = 0.08) were associated with better intervention reporting. Nutritional weight management interventions in MBS care are still below the desirable standards for reporting. The present study highlights the need to improve adequate reporting of such interventions, which would allow for greater replicability, evaluation through evidence synthesis studies, and transferability into clinical practice.

Bariatric surgery (BS) can have negative effects on bone health. Bone microarchitecture quality evaluation using the trabecular bone score (TBS) has not been described in patients after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). To test the hypothesis that the TBS is clinically useful for this population, we evaluated changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and the TBS in a longitudinal cohort study following SG. The measurements before surgery and after 12 and 24 postoperative months were as follows: weight, height, BMI, waist circumference (WC), BMD and TBS. The results at baseline showed the following: a mean BMI of 43 ± 0.56, TBS of 1.25 ± 0.02, lumbar spine BMD T-score of -0.4 ± 0.93, TBS T-score of -2.30 ± 0.21, significantly lower than BMD-T-score, and associated with a BMD-T-TBS-T gap (T-gap) of -2.05 ± 1.26 (-0.24 ± 0.13). One year after surgery, the TBS had significantly improved (+12.12% ± 1.5), leading to a T-gap of -0.296 ± 0.14, which remained stable at 2 years post-surgery. A correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between the T-gap and WC (r = -0.43 p = 0.004). Our interpretation is that abdominal fat may interfere with image acquisition via increased tissue thickness, leading to a false low TBS at baseline. In conclusion, TBS should be interpreted with caution in patients with obesity and elevated WC. Additionally, we show that after SG, the LS microarchitecture measured using the TBS is partially degraded in up to 25% of patients. Further studies are warranted to assess hip bone microarchitecture changes after bariatric surgery.

We aimed to explore the relationships between childhood maltreatment and changes in weight, depressive symptoms and eating behavior post-bariatric surgery (BS). Participants (n = 111, 85% females) were evaluated pre-surgery, and at 6 months (6 M) and 12 months (12 M) post-BS. History of maltreatment was assessed at baseline (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), and depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-II) and eating behavior (Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire) were assessed at all time points. Participants' mean age and median BMI were 45.1 ± 11.7 years and 46.7 (IQR 42.4-51.9) kg/m2, respectively. Histories of emotional (EA), physical (PA) and sexual abuse (SA) and emotional (EN) and physical (PN) neglect were reported by 47.7%, 25.2%, 39.6%, 51.4% and 40.5%, respectively, with 78.4% reporting at least one form of maltreatment. Changes in weight and depressive symptoms were not different between patients with vs. without a history of maltreatment. However, those with vs. without SA demonstrated limited changes in emotional eating (EE) at 12 M, while those without showed improvements. Conversely, patients with vs. without EN showed greater improvements in external eating (ExE) at 6 M, but differences were no longer observed by 12 M. Results indicate that histories of SA and EN are associated with changes in eating behaviors post-BS and have implications for assessment, monitoring and potential intervention development.

OBJECTIVES: To describe gastrointestinal-related side-effects reported following the One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB). METHODS: A multicenter study among OAGB patients across Israel (n = 277) and Portugal (n = 111) who were recruited to the study based on time elapsed since surgery was performed. An online survey with information on demographics, anthropometrics, medical conditions, and gastrointestinal outcomes was administered in both countries simultaneously. RESULTS: Respondents from Israel (pre-surgery age of 41.6 ± 11.0 years, 75.8% females) and Portugal (pre-surgery age of 45.6 ± 12.3 years, 79.3% females) presented mean excess weight loss of 51.0 ± 19.9 and 62.4 ± 26.5%, 89.0 ± 22.0 and 86.2 ± 21.4%, and 89.9 ± 23.6 and 98.2 ± 20.9% (P < 0.001 for both countries), at 1-6 months, 6-12 months, and 1-5 years post-surgery, respectively. Median Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale score was similar between time elapsed since surgery groups among respondents from Israel and Portugal (≤1.97 and ≤2.12). A notable proportion of respondents from Israel and Portugal at all time points reported 1-3 bowel movements per day (≤62.8 and ≤87.6%), Bristol stool scale categories which represent diarrhea-like stools (≤51.9 and ≤56.3%), having discomfort due to flatulence (≤79.4 and ≤90.2%), and mild to severe dyspepsia symptoms (≤50.5 and ≤73.0%). CONCLUSIONS: A notable proportion of OAGB patients might experience certain gastrointestinal symptoms postoperatively, including flatulence, dyspepsia, and diarrhea-like stools.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery leads to profound changes in gut microbiota and dietary patterns, both of which may interact to impact gut-brain communication. Though cognitive function improves postsurgery, there is a large variability in outcomes. How bariatric surgery-induced modifications in the gut microbiota and dietary patterns influence the variability in cognitive function is still unclear. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the associations between bariatric surgery-induced changes in dietary and gut microbiota patterns with cognition and brain structure. SETTING: University hospital. METHODS: A total of 120 adult patients (≥30 years) scheduled to undergo a primary bariatric surgery along with 60 age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched patients on the surgery waitlist will undergo assessments 3-months presurgery and 6- and 12-month postsurgery (or an equivalent time for the waitlist group). Additionally, 60 age-and sex-matched nonbariatric surgery eligible individuals will complete the presurgical assessments only. Evaluations will include sociodemographic and health behavior questionnaires, physiological assessments (anthropometrics, blood-, urine-, and fecal-based measures), neuropsychological cognitive tests, and structural magnetic resonance imaging. Cluster analyses of the dietary and gut microbiota changes will define the various dietary patterns and microbiota profiles, then using repeated measures mixed models, their associations with global cognitive and structural brain alterations will be explored. RESULTS: The coordinating study site (Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux du Nord-de-l'Île-de-Montréal, QC, Canada), provided the primary ethical approval (Research Ethics Board#: MP-32-2022-2412). CONCLUSIONS: The insights generated from this study can be used to develop individually-targeted neurodegenerative disease prevention strategies, as well as providing critical mechanistic information.

OBJECTIVE: The INTER-Change program aims to use systematic frameworks to develop adjunct behavioral interventions to enhance long-term behavior change and improve outcomes in patients undergoing bariatric surgery (BS). This paper details the program strategies and how engagement of interested parties is shaping the research. METHOD: The core elements of this work include: (a) A living systematic review of behavioral weight management (BWM) interventions adjunct to BS; (b) Focus groups of interested parties, including patients, healthcare professionals, and administrators, on different aspects of designing and implementing adjunct behavioral interventions; (c) A patient-generated survey to assess needs for behavioral interventions to support BWM; (d) An international eDelphi study involving interested parties to prioritize intervention components and delivery structures; and (e) An international consensus meeting to construct testing intervention protocol(s). RESULTS: The systematic review revealed that delivering BWM interventions during the postoperative period resulted in better weight maintenance; however, most interventions reviewed were poorly developed, and none included interested parties. Initial themes from ongoing focus groups highlighted nonweight-related outcomes as being key goals of adjunct behavior change interventions, with a strong emphasis on psychological well-being and health-related behaviors. The patient survey will add patients' feedback on current interventions and expectations. Finally, the eDelphi process and international consensus meeting will integrate all the findings to develop more efficient behavioral interventions and appropriate testing protocol(s). CONCLUSIONS: This integrated knowledge translation approach will help ensure that the behavioral adjunct interventions are relevant to interested parties' needs, well-designed, effective, and more likely to be implemented successfully. This study aimed to describe nutritional and lifestyle parameters following one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB). A multicenter study among OAGB patients across Israel (n = 277) and Portugal (n = 111) was performed. Patients were approached according to the time elapsed since surgery. An online survey with information regarding demographics, anthropometrics, and nutritional and lifestyle aspects was administered in both countries simultaneously. Respondents from Israel (pre-surgery age of 41.6 ± 11.0 years, 75.8% females) and Portugal (pre-surgery age of 45.6 ± 12.3 years, 79.3% females) reported changes in their appetite (≤94.0% and ≤94.6%), changes in their taste (≤51.0 and ≤51.4%), and intolerance to specific foods (i.e., red meat, pasta, bread, and rice). Bariatric surgery-related eating recommendations were generally followed well, but a trend toward lower adherence was evident in groups with longer time elapsed since surgery in both countries. Most respondents from Israel and Portugal reported participation in follow-up meetings with a surgeon (≤94.0% and 100%) and a dietitian (≤92.6% and ≤100%), while far fewer reported participation in any follow-up meeting with a psychologist/social worker (≤37.9% and ≤56.1%). Patients following OAGB might experience changes in appetite, taste, and intolerance to specific foods. Adherence to bariatric surgery-related eating recommendations is not always satisfying, especially in the longer term post-surgery.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggest that problematic eating behaviors such as food addiction (FA) and binge eating (BE) may alter following bariatric surgery (BS) and impact weight outcomes. We aimed to examine the prevalence of FA and BE and their associations with weight outcomes 2 years post-sleeve gastrectomy (SG). METHODS: Forty-five women (mean age 32.4 ± 10.9 years) who underwent SG and completed 24 months of follow-up were evaluated prospectively at pre-, 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-month post-SG. Data collected included anthropometrics, nutritional intake, and lifestyle patterns. The Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) and the Binge Eating Scale (BES) were used to characterize FA and BE, respectively. RESULTS: Pre-surgery FA and BE were identified in 40.0% and 46.7% of participants, respectively. Following SG, FA and BE prevalence was 10.0%, 5.0%, 29.4%, and 14.2% (P = 0.007), and 12.5%, 4.9%, 18.4%, and 19.4% (P < 0.001) at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months, respectively. Women with BE at baseline gained significantly more weight from the nadir compared to non-BE women at baseline (P = 0.009). There was no relationship between FA at baseline and weight (P = 0.090). Weight regained from the nadir positively correlated with BES scores at baseline (r = 0.374, P = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: FA and BE tend to decrease during the early postoperative period, but remains in a notable rates return by 2 years post-SG. Moreover, pre-surgical BE was related to higher weight-regain. Proper management pre-BS should include a comprehensive eating pathologies assessment, as these pathologies may remain or re-emerge post-surgery and lead to worse weight outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that sleeve gastrectomy (SG) leads to significant bone mineral density (BMD) losses, but there is a paucity of studies evaluating skeletal consequences beyond 12-months post-operatively. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate BMD changes 2 years postoperatively. SETTING: A university hospital. METHODS: Thirty-three women (mean age: 34.4 ± 12.3 years) who underwent SG and completed 24 months of follow-up were evaluated prospectively at baseline and at 3 (M3), 6 (M6), 12 (M12), and 24 (M24) months postoperatively. Data collected included BMD at the total hip, femoral neck, and lumbar spine measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and anthropometrics, biochemical, nutritional, and physical activity parameters. RESULTS: At M24, patients achieved a mean body mass index and excess weight loss of 32.4 ± 5.1 kg/m2 and 64.5 ± 21.4%, respectively; however, weight stabilized at M12. Femoral neck BMD decreased significantly from baseline to M24 (.924 ± .124 versus .870 ± .129 g/cm2, P < .001), with no change between M12 and M24 (P = .273). Total hip BMD decreased significantly from baseline to M24 (1.004 ± .105 versus .965 ± .132 g/cm2, P < .001) but increased between M12 and M24 (P = .001). No significant changes were noted in lumbar spine BMD. The percentage of changes in the femoral neck and the total hip BMD from baseline to M24 positively correlated with postoperative excess weight loss (r = .352, P = .045, and r = .416, P = .018, respectively). CONCLUSION: Despite notable weight loss, women who underwent SG experienced significant bone loss at the total hip and femoral neck more than 2 years postoperatively. Future studies should investigate intervention strategies to attenuate skeletal deterioration after SG.

PURPOSE: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is an effective treatment for extreme obesity; however, long-term weight loss outcomes remain largely understudied. We aimed to examine the long-term weight changes following SG and patient characteristics and lifestyle patterns related to weight loss outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from medical records of patients operated in a tertiary university medical center between 2008 and 2014 were reviewed, along with information derived from a telephone questionnaire. Information included the following: current medical status, medications, side effects, behavior, lifestyle habits, and weight changes. RESULTS: A total of 212 patients (69.3% females) were included, with a median follow-up duration of 8 years post-SG. Mean age and baseline body mass index (BMI) of participants were 39.7 ± 12.0 years and 42.2 ± 4.9 kg/m2, respectively. Mean BMI, percentage excess weight loss, and percentage total body weight loss were 33.1 ± 6.1, 55.5 ± 27.5%, and 21.7 ± 10.7%, respectively. Higher baseline BMI was found to be the strongest independent predictor for insufficient weight loss (OR = 0.90, P = 0.001, 95% CI 0.85, 0.96). Sweetened beverage intake, usage of psychiatric medications, higher initial BMI, and lower age were significant predictors for increased weight gain from nadir weight (P < 0.0001, P = 0.005, P = 0.035, and P < 0.0001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: SG patients were found to maintain a notable long-term weight loss. Nevertheless, weight regain and insufficient weight loss were prevalent in the long-term post-operative period, and were related to certain lifestyle patterns. Clinical practice should emphasize the relationship between post-operative weight loss outcomes and specific behaviors. Efforts should be made to educate patients on the need for lifelong follow-up and support.

Bariatric surgery is gaining acceptance as an efficient treatment modality for adults and adolescents with morbid obesity. The early postbariatric period has the potential to induce an immunomodulatory imbalance due to the development or worsening of nutritional deficiencies, changes in hormonal balance (specifically after sleeve gastrectomy), and a shift in the proinflammatory cytokine profile along with a major change in the gut microbiome and permeability. These changes may induce encephalomyelitic T cell activity, change neural barrier permeability, and induce gut dysbioisis, favoring a proinflammatory metabolic profile. Such changes, in genetically prone individuals or those with additional risk factors, may lead to the development of myelopathy, particularly MS. Key Message: Postbariatric myelopathy is rare but should be considered in bariatric patients with relevant complaints in the postoperative period.

Hospitalized patients are dependent on the hospital menu to meet their nutritional needs; thus, errors in the meals provided can have a substantial impact on patients' health outcomes. In Israel, no specific policy protocol exists to ensure food allergy safety in the setting of a hospital foodservice system. OBJECTIVES: This paper has two aims: 1) to provide an in-depth review of food allergy as a major public health concern and 2) to report actions taken in a single large medical center, as an ongoing project that aimed to ensure patients' safety, and which ended in developing policy on this matter. RESULTS: During the years 2017-2019, we initiated several interventions with the goal of achieving food allergy safety and ensuring quality of care for patients with food allergies at Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center. These included integrating food management safety into the computerized foodservice system, highlighting labels on patients' food trays, introducing safety checks into the process of food delivery to hospitalized patients; and ensuring the nutritional requirements of patients with allergy restrictions. Moreover, changes were made in specialized menus for patients with various types of food allergy, and specific procedures were implemented regarding enteral feeding, to prevent accidental allergen exposure. All the procedures were incorporated into a written protocol that applies to all hospital employees, and the staff received the relevant training. CONCLUSIONS: Our experience suggests that methods for food allergy safety should be promoted, and that an established policy and suitable set of guidelines on this matter is required. This clearly mandates collaboration between the various sectors of the hospital, including management and the computer department; and the medical, nursing, dietetics and kitchen staffs. Furthermore, routine ongoing knowledge training programs for medical teams and kitchen staff are crucial for such implementational changes. In a technological world, computerized systems delivering food to hospitalized patients must be adapted such as to create a uniformly safe food environment of healthcare systems, and developing a suitable policy should be prioritized accordingly by hospitals across Israel, with collaboration and synergy between institutions management and the departments of nutrition and patient safety and risk management.

BACKGROUND: The appropriate strategies to minimize skeletal deterioration following bariatric surgeries are inconclusive. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effect of preoperative vitamin supplementation on bone mineral density (BMD) and biochemical parameters in females post-sleeve gastrectomy (SG). METHODS: Participants were randomized to a 2-month preoperative treatment with a multivitamin and vitamin D 4000 IU/d (intervention arm) or 1200 IU/d (control arm). Preoperative and 12-month postoperative follow-up evaluations included anthropometrics, biochemical parameters, and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). RESULTS: Sixty-two females (median age 29.7 years and median BMI 43.4 kg/m2) were recruited, 87% completed the 12-month follow-up. For the intervention and control arms, significant and similar reductions at 12-months post-surgery were observed in BMD of the hip (-6.8 ± 3.7% vs. -6.0 ± 3.6%; P = 0.646) and of the femoral neck (-7.1 ± 5.8% vs. -7.2 ± 5.5%; P = 0.973). For the intervention compared to the control arm, the 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) increment was greater after 2 months treatment, and vitamin D deficiency rates were lower at 3 and 6-months follow-up (P < 0.016). However, at 12-months postoperative, 25(OH)D values and vitamin D deficiency were comparable between the arms (P > 0.339). Predictors for BMD decline in the total hip were the percentage of excess weight-loss, age>50 years, and lower initial BMI (P ≤ 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: SG was associated with a significant decline in BMD of the hip and femoral neck in young and middle-aged women, and was unaffected by preoperative vitamin D supplementation. Females who are peri-menopausal or with greater postoperative weight-loss should be particularly followed for BMD decline.

BACKGROUND: Food addiction and binge eating are common among individuals with obesity. However, a paucity of studies prospectively examined the prevalence and implications of food addiction before and post-bariatric surgery. We aimed to examine the prevalence of food addiction and binge eating before and after sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and to assess their associations with behavioral and weight loss outcomes. METHODS: We followed at 3 (M3), 6 (M6), and 12 (M12) months postoperative, 54 women who underwent SG. Data collected including anthropometrics, nutritional intake, food tolerance, and physical activity measures. The Yale Food Addiction Scale and the Binge Eating Scale were used to characterize food addiction and binge eating, respectively. RESULTS: The mean baseline age and BMI were 32.1 ± 11.1 years and 44.9 ± 4.9 kg/m2, respectively. Pre-surgery, food addiction, and binge eating were identified in 40.7% and 48.1% of patients, respectively. The prevalence of food addiction decreased significantly up to M6, but increased to 29.3% at M12. The prevalence of binge eating decreased significantly through the follow-up up to 17.4% at M12. Those who met criteria for food addiction at M12 achieved significantly lower excess weight loss at M12 compared with those not meeting this criterion (P = 0.005). Food addiction scores at M12 negatively correlated with weekly physical activity (r = - 0.559; P < 0.001) and food tolerance scores (r = - 0.428; P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The reduction in food addiction observed at M6 was not maintained at M12. Food addiction at M12 was associated with poorer weight loss, eating, and lifestyle behaviors. Clinical practice should focus on the psychological aspects associated with obesity.

Bariatric surgery (BS) has proven to be highly efficacious in the treatment of obesity and its comorbidities. However, careful patient selection is critical for its success. Thus, patients should undergo medical, behavioral, and nutritional assessment by a multidisciplinary team. From the nutritional point of view, BS candidates should undergo nutritional assessment, preparation, and education by a registered dietitian in the preoperative period. Currently, detailed specified and comprehensive information on these topics is lacking. The present narrative review aimed to summarize the available literature concerning both the preoperative nutritional assessment components and the preoperative nutritional preparation and education components of patients planning to undergo BS. Current literature indicates that proper management before BS should include a comprehensive nutritional assessment, in which it is advisable to perform a clinical interview to assess patients' medical background, weight management history, eating patterns and pathologies, oral health, physical activity habits, nutritional status, supplementation usage, BS knowledge, surgery expectations and anthropometric measurements. Nutritional preparation and educational strategies should include an individualized preoperative weight-loss nutrition program, improvement of glycemic control, micronutrients deficiencies correction, eating and lifestyle habits adaptation, physical activity initiation, and strengthening knowledge on obesity and BS. At this stage, more well-designed intervention and long-term cohort studies are needed in order to formulate uniform evidence-based nutritional guidelines for patients who plan to undergo BS, including populations at higher nutritional risk. Moreover, postoperative outcomes of presurgical nutritional intervention programs should be studied.
