Renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) represent 2-3% of cancer cases in Denmark, with increasing incidence. RCCs invading the inferior vena cava (IVC) with tumour thrombus (TT) are associated with poor prognosis. Classification is based on tumour extent in the IVC. Surgical treatment involves radical nephrectomy and thrombectomy, with different approaches depending on TT level. Complications are significant, with a mortality rate of 2-13%. Additional therapies may improve outcomes. This review finds that all patients with RCC and IVC TT should be considered for surgery.

Introduction For many Danes, Christmas is a traditional celebration linked with food, and Christmas dinner might be the most important dinner of the year. Whether the correct meal includes roast pork or roast duck is a deeply personal question. Methods We asked all patients who were admitted to the surgical gastrointestinal emergency clinics of the Capital Region in Denmark on Christmas Eve and Christmas Night what they have had for Christmas dinner. Results A total of 30 patients presented to the hospital, and 17 of these were successfully included. 71% had eaten roast duck and 65% had eaten roast pork. This result was non-significant compared with the general Danish population tested with chi-square (p = 0.955). Conclusion We found no significance in the ingestion of roast duck and roast pork between patients at surgical gastrointestinal emergency clinics and the Danish background population. Funding none. Trial registration none.

This case report describes Fournier's gangrene in a 35-year-old male following elective inguinal orchiectomy for testicular cancer. The aetiology was unknown, possibly beginning in the bottom of the scrotum following orchiectomy, alternatively through the scrotal skin after hair removal prior to surgery. Survivors from Fournier's gangrene often suffer from severe long-term morbidity, and multidisciplinary treatment is important for outcome optimization.

BACKGROUND: Despite treatment advances, trauma laparotomy continuous to be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Most of the literature originates from high volume centers, whereas patient characteristics and outcomes in a Scandinavian setting is not well described. The objective of this study is to characterize treatments and outcomes of patients undergoing trauma laparotomy in a Scandinavian setting and compare this to international reports. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in the Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet (CUHR). All patients undergoing a trauma laparotomy within the first 24 h of admission between January 1st 2019 and December 31st 2020 were included. Collected data included demographics, trauma mechanism, injuries, procedures performed and outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 1713 trauma patients were admitted to CUHR of which 98 patients underwent trauma laparotomy. Penetrating trauma accounted for 16.6% of the trauma population and 66.3% of trauma laparotomies. Median time to surgery after arrival at the trauma center (TC) was 12 min for surgeries performed in the Emergency Department (ED) and 103 min for surgeries performed in the operating room (OR). A total of 14.3% of the procedures were performed in the ED. A damage control strategy (DCS) approach was chosen in 18.4% of cases. Our rate of negative laparotomies was 17.3%. We found a mortality rate of 8.2%. The total median length of stay was 6.1 days. CONCLUSION: The overall rates, findings, and outcomes of trauma laparotomies in this Danish cohort is comparable to reports from similar Western European trauma systems.
