BACKGROUND: it has been demonstrated in various experimental studies that radiation exposure produces a negative impact on the processes of spermatogenesis associated with the disturbances of the microcirculation processes in the testes and the development of cellular and intracellular disintegration expressed as destructive changes in the cells leading to their death. AIM: The objective of the present study was to detect the ultrastructural abnormalities in the cells of Sertoli and spermatogonia under conditions of their exposure to radiation and to identify the peculiarities of their regeneration under the influence of the therapeutic and prophylactic application of low-intensity ultra-high frequency (UHF) electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and low-intensity low-frequency magnetic field (MF). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The experiments were carried out on 28 non-pedigree mature male rats with the body weight 180-220 g that were divided into four groups. The first study group was comprised of the animals exposed to radiation followed by the application of low-intensity ultra-high frequency UHF electromagnetic radiation EMR. The rats in the second study group experienced effects of radiation and low-intensity low-frequency MF. The animals of the third (control) group were exposed to radiation alone, and those comprising the fourth group 1 (only radiation exposure) were considered to be intact. RESULTS: The studies with the use of electron microscopy showed that the therapeutic and prophylactic application of low-intensity ultra-high frequency (UHF) electromagnetic radiation and low-intensity low-frequency magnetic field caused the decrease in the number and the severity of post-radiation defects in the treated cells together with the increase of the number and size of mitochondria as well as hyperplasia of ribosomes; moreover, it promoted cellular and intracellular regeneration. UHF electromagnetic radiation had a more pronounced stimulating effect on the regeneration processes as compared with low-frequency MF. Particularly active processes of intracellular regeneration evolved in Sertoli cells; they were manifested as the increase in the number and size of mitochondria, enhanced hyperplasia of ribosomes, and formation of polysomes and new membranes of the granular endoplasmic reticulum. In spermatogonia, intracellular regeneration was less pronounced than in the Sertoli cells but was accompanied by enhanced cell regeneration and a greater number of reserve stem/progenitor cells. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study provide a rationale for the possibility of the application of a low-frequency magnetic field and especially UHF electromagnetic radiation for the further development of the promising therapeutic and preventive technologies with a view to their introduction into routine clinical practice dealing with radiation-induced pathology.

The review is concerned with the investigations into the influence of physiotherapeutic factors on the regeneration of the muscular, nervous, bone, and epidermal tissues; also, it analyses the publications pertaining to the influence of low-intensive physiotherapeutic modalities on the migration rate, proliferative activity, and differentiation of stem cells as well as physiological stability and viability of these cells following their transplantation. The currently available data give evidence of the possibility in principle of the combined application of physiotherapeutic factors and cellular technologies in regenerative medicine and the prospects opening for the development of the new direction of research in modern biomedicine, namely regenerative physical therapy. The importance of interdisciplinary basic and clinical investigations in this direction becomes especially evident in the light of the recent achievements and rapid progress in the development of modern regenerative medicine.

The experiments carried out on outbred male white rats with the use of optical, electron-microscopic, biochemical, and radioimmunological methods have demonstrated that the application of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation (LI-EMR) with a flow density of 1 mcW/cm2 and a frequency of around 1,000 MHz both in the primary prophylaxis regime and as the therapeuticpreventive modality arrested the development of post-stress disorders in the rat testicles, liver, and thymus; moreover, it promoted activation of the adaptive, preventive, and compensatory processes. The data obtained provide a rationale for the application of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation to protect the organism from negative effects of stressful factors.

The experiments carried out on outbred white male rats have demonstrated that twice repeated immobilization stress resulted in the destruction of intracellular organelles and interfered with the regeneration processes in the Sertoli cells and Leydig cells. The combination of the consumption of drinking mineral sulfate water (MW) with the application of a constant or alternating magnetic field (MF) caused stimulation of intracellular regenerative reactions that were especially pronounced in the Sertoli cells in the form of enhanced organoid and intra-organoid regeneration of mitochondria. This in turn increased biological potential of the cells and thereby provided a basis for the further development of biosynthetic processes. The results of the study expose to a certain degree the causes and mechanisms responsible for the higher effectiveness of the combined action of mineral water and magnetic fields compared with the monofactor treatment (mineral water alone).

The adaptive mechanisms of action of reflexotherapy are analysed. It was shown in physiological and biochemical experiments on the whole organism, the isolated hearts and strips of resistive arteries of animals that stimulation of acupuncture points by different physical factors increased the activity of opioid, antioxidative, and other stress-limiting systems, reduced secretion of corticosteron during stress, stimulated biosynthesis of stress proteins, induced cyto- and cardioprotective effects, prevented or limited functional and structural hyperadrenal damages. Clinical investigations demonstrated significant hypothensive, anti-ishemic and anti-arrhythmic effects of reflexotherapy, improved resistance of healthy subjects and patients with cardiovascular diseases to physical and emotional loadings.

The social implications of the estimation of health reserves and their monitoring becomes increasingly important for early diagnostics of dysfunctional problems associated with the social and occupational activities as well as for the prevention of the development of pathological processes. Taking this fact into consideration, we have designed a diagnostic technology called "health reserves" for the identification of subjects with risk factors of the development of the most widespread diseases that enables the users to perform qualitative assessment of the risks, evaluate functional reserves of the organism, and prognosticate the efficacy of application of non-medicamental technologies for the improvement of the patients' health status. We studied 79 patients aged from 18 to 73 years including 33 (42.8%) men and 44 (57.2%) women at their admittance to the clinic and within 2-3 days after discharge. The patients were treated using non-medicamental rehabilitative techniques, such as remedial gymnastics, massage, iodine-bromine baths. The results of the treatment were subjected to the mathematical analysis. The study permitted to determine predictors of efficacy of the non-medicamental treatment and individualized rehabilitation programs.

The existing system of preventive medical examination of the population engaged in economic activities with the purpose of early diagnostics of a variety of disorders and pathological conditions practically does not use the technologies for the assessment of health reserves and identification of the groups at risk of developing common diseases and premorbid conditions. We examined a total of 67 subjects (32 men and 35 women) and treated the data obtained by using the mathematical methods of statistics. The results were used to develop the "Health Reserves" hardware and software complex whose diagnostic potential and informational content permit to identify individuals at high risk of developing common diseases, quantitatively evaluate functional reserves of the human organism, and predict the efficacy of application of non-medicamental technologies for their enhancement.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of serial irradiation of experimental animals with a visible light flow showing spectral lines of copper and manganese on the rate of reparative processes and the associated metabolic events. The cathode of the lamp that contained both microelements generated the light flux possessed of significant biological activity. Specifically, it accelerated reduction of the wound surface area and optimized regulation of carbohydrate metabolism in the lipid peroxidation system by insulin and cotisol. The light flux emitted by the cathode containing only one of the two elements (either copper or manganese) produced a similar but less pronounced effect.

Biochemical effects of phytoinhalation and oral administration of biologically active additives containing beta-carotene (e.g. vetoron) are evaluated with special reference to changes in lipid peroxidation. Systemic analysis of the mechanisms of antioxidative effects of phytotherapy demonstrated the leading role of activation of vegetative homeostasis-regulating centres and central stress-limiting systems as well as direct action of antioxidative ingredients comprising the formulation. The study showed that combination of phytotherapy and vetoron allowed the overall antioxidative efficiency of these treatments to be considerably increased due to their action on different targets. It is concluded that the proposed method promotes effectiveness of combined rehabilitative treatment in patients with arterial hypertension due to correction of disturbed lipid peroxidation.

Efficiency of different phytotherapeutic modalities (per os, baths, inhalation) in patients with arterial hypertension was evaluated under conditions of balneologic treatment. Modes of their curative action and mechanisms of the disease are considered. Comparative analysis of non-medicamentous technologies used in balneologic practice is presented. It is shown that hormonal regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism plays the key role in the realization of therapeutic effects of phytopreparations. The improvement of functional activity of the cardiovascular system turns out to correlate with reduced clinical manifestations of metabolic syndrome.
