RESUMEN

A 4 mo old female Staffordshire bull terrier puppy was presented with chronic Escherichia coli cystitis. Ultrasound and cystoscopic examination revealed innumerable, intraluminal, finger-like proliferations arising from the dorsal urinary bladder (UB) wall. Histological examination of mucosal biopsies obtained by cystoscopy was suggestive of granulomatous cystitis. The proliferative lesions were removed surgically and submitted for histological examination. The UB submucosa was heavily infiltrated by macrophages with periodic acid-Schiff-positive cytoplasm exhibiting rare Michaelis-Gutmann bodies, leading to the diagnosis of malakoplakia. The puppy was prescribed with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. The urinary signs disappeared despite the persistent UB wall thickening revealed by abdominal ultrasound. Urine culture performed during the ninth week of treatment showed a persistent infection by E coli resistant to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. The dog was switched to doxycycline but was then lost to follow-up. Malakoplakia is a chronic granulomatous inflammation well documented in humans. Its pathophysiology is not fully understood, but bacterial infection, immunodepression, and a defective lysosomal function may lead to the intracytoplasmic accumulation of partially degraded bacteria that can subsequently mineralize to form the Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. Malakoplakia should be suspected when UB mass lesions are identified in a young dog with bacterial cystitis.

RESUMEN

CASE DESCRIPTION A 7-year-old 44-kg (97-lb) neutered male Great Pyrenees was referred for evaluation because of episodic dyspnea with cyanosis of 1 to 2 weeks' duration. Three days prior to evaluation, the clinical signs had worsened, including 1 episode of collapse. CLINICAL FINDINGS Thoracic radiography and CT revealed a well-delineated soft tissue mass, located approximately 1.5 cm cranial to the carina and occupying almost 90% of the tracheal lumen. A CBC and serum biochemical analysis were performed, and all results were within reference limits. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME Tracheoscopy confirmed the presence of a broad-based bilobate mass that was protruding from the right dorsal aspect of the trachea and occupied almost the entire tracheal lumen. The mass was successfully resected by endoscopic-guided electrocautery ablation. Findings of histologic evaluation were consistent with a diagnosis of liposarcoma. Immediately following the ablation procedure, the previously noted clinical signs of respiratory tract disease resolved. On follow-up examination 12 months later, no regrowth of the mass was evident on thoracic helical CT and tracheoscopy. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Endoscopic-guided electrocautery ablation of tracheal liposarcoma was a safe and effective minimally invasive treatment for the dog of this report. The procedure was brief and appeared to be well tolerated, resulting in immediate improvement of clinical signs.

RESUMEN

Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate age, sex, breed, clinical signs, time between onset of signs and presentation, diagnostic procedures, method of extraction, location and nature of foreign bodies (FBs) in confirmed cases of tracheobronchial FBs in cats. We hypothesised that bronchoscopy was effective in extracting tracheobronchial FBs in cats. Methods A retrospective study was performed using clinical reports from three private practices in France between May 2009 and November 2014. Cats were included if an intraluminal tracheobronchial FB had been identified and extracted (either by bronchoscopy or surgery). Results Twelve cats (six male, six female) were included. Mean age was 3.75 ± 2.5 years. Coughing was the main complaint and was present in 9/12 (75%) of the cats. Thoracic radiographs were obtained in 12/12 cats (100%) and a FB was suspected in 11/12 (92%). Bronchoscopy was performed in all of the cats and enabled FB extraction in 10/12 (83%) of them. In 2/12 cats (17%), an additional surgical approach was required. In 6/12 (50%) cats, FBs were located in the trachea, while in 6/12 (50%) cats FBs were in the bronchial tree, particularly in the right caudal bronchus (4/6; 66%). Seven of 12 (58%) FBs were vegetal in nature, 3/12 (25%) were mineral and 2/12 (17%) were undetermined. All the mineral FBs were extracted from the trachea, while the majority of the vegetal ones (5/7; 71%) were found in the bronchi. Conclusions and relevance Feline respiratory FBs can be found in the trachea and in the bronchial tree, particularly in the right caudal bronchus. Vegetal FBs tend to migrate through the bronchial tree, whereas mineral ones tend to lodge in the trachea. Bronchoscopy seems to be a highly effective procedure for the extraction of tracheobronchial FBs in cats.

RESUMEN

A 16-year-old domestic shorthaired cat with chronic kidney disease was presented with a subacute history of weakness and anorexia. Severe hypercalcaemia was identified and attributed to a cervical mass, diagnosed as a parathyroid carcinoma after surgery. Renal function, as evaluated by plasma creatinine, initially worsened during hypercalcaemia but fully returned to previously documented values two months post-operatively.

RESUMEN

An atypical case of Mycoplasma pneumonia with an unusual radiographic and computed tomographic pattern was diagnosed in a Siamese kitten. The cat showed no response to broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy including enrofloxacin. The administration of doxycycline led to a dramatic clinical and radiographic improvement.

A 6-year-old Dachshund was presented with a 2-day history of lethargy, anorexia and cutaneous erythema, edema, and multifocal erythematous papules affecting the ventral abdomen, axillae, and groin. Microscopic examination revealed a sterile neutrophilic dermatitis resembling Sweet's syndrome; however, extracutaneous lesions were not present. The condition responded rapidly to corticosteroid therapy.
