RESUMEN

We describe the development and analysis of a new teletherapy modality that, through a novel approach to targeted radiation delivery, has the potential to provide greater conformality than conventional photon-based treatments. The proposed system uses an X-ray lens to reflect photons from a conventional X-ray tube toward a focal spot. The resulting dose distributions have a highly localized peak dose, with lower doses in the converging radiation cone. Physical principles governing the design of this system are presented, along with a series of measurements analyzing various characteristics of the converging beam. The beam was designed to be nearly monoenergetic (~ 59 keV), with an energy bandwidth of approximately 10 keV allowing for treatment energies lower than conventional therapies. The focal spot was measured to be approximately 2.5 cm long and 4 mm wide. Mounting the proposed X-ray delivery system on a robotic arm would allow sub-millimeter accuracy in focal spot positioning, resulting in highly conformal dose distribution via the optimal placement of individual focal spots within the target volume. Aspects of this novel radiation beam are discussed considering their possible clinical application as a treatment approach that takes maximum advantage of the unique properties afforded by converging X-ray beam therapy.

RESUMEN

We have measured the fluorescence quantum efficiency in Ti3+:sapphire single crystals between 150 K and 550 K. Using literature-given effective fluorescence lifetime temperature dependence, we show that the zero temperature radiative lifetime is (4.44 ± 0.04) µs, compared to the 3.85 µs of the fluorescence lifetime. Fluorescence lifetime thermal shortening resolves into two parallel effects: radiative lifetime shortening, and non-radiative transition rate enhancement. The first is due to thermally enhanced occupation of a ΔE = 1,700 cm-1 higher (top) electronic state of the upper multiplet, exhibiting a transition oscillator strength of f = 0.62, compared to only 0.013 of the bottom electronic state of the same multiplet. The non-radiative rate relates to multi-phonon decay transitions stimulated by the thermal phonon occupation. Thermal enhancement of the configuration potential anharmonicity is also observed. An empiric expression for the figure-of-anharmonicity temperature dependence is given as [Formula: see text] (T) = [Formula: see text] (0)(1 + ß exp(-ℏωco /kBT )), where [Formula: see text] (0) = 0.276, ß = 5.2, ℏωco = 908 cm-1, and kB is the Boltzmann constant.

RESUMEN

The saturable optical absorption properties of PbSe core nanocrystals (NCs), and their corresponding PbSe/PbScore/shell and PbSe/PbSexS(1-x) core/alloyed-shell NCs, were examined at lambda = 1.54 microm. Saturation intensities of approximately 100 MW/cm2 were obtained. The NCs act as passive Q switches in near-infrared pulsed lasers. Q-switched output pulse energies up to 3 mJ, with a pulse duration of 40-55 ns were demonstrated. Analysis of the optical transmission versus pulse light intensity was carried out according to a model that includes ground-state as well as excited-state absorption. For pulses approximately 10 ns long, the NCs act as fast saturable absorbers. The theoretical fits yield a ground-state absorption cross section of 10-16-10-15 cm2, an excited-state absorption cross section of sigma(es) is congruent to 10(-16) cm2, and an effective lifetime of tau(eff) is congruent to 5 x 10(-12) s.
