Background: Differences in the prevalence of four diabetes subgroups have been reported in Mexico compared to other populations, but factors that may contribute to these differences are poorly understood. Here, we estimate the prevalence of diabetes subgroups in Mexico and evaluate their correlates with indicators of social disadvantage using data from national representative surveys. Methods: We analyzed serial, cross-sectional Mexican National Health and Nutrition Surveys spanning 2016, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022, including 23,354 adults (>20 years). Diabetes subgroups (obesity-related [MOD], severe insulin-deficient [SIDD], severe insulin-resistant [SIRD], and age-related [MARD]) were classified using self-normalizing neural networks based on a previously validated algorithm. We used the density-independent social lag index (DISLI) as a proxy of state-level social disadvantage. Findings: We identified 4204 adults (median age: 57, IQR: 47-66, women: 64%) living with diabetes, yielding a pooled prevalence of 16.04% [95% CI: 14.92-17.17]. When stratified by diabetes subgroup, prevalence was 6.62% (5.69-7.55) for SIDD, 5.25% (4.52-5.97) for MOD, 2.39% (1.95-2.83) for MARD, and 1.27% (1.00-1.54) for SIRD. SIDD and MOD clustered in Southern Mexico, whereas MARD and SIRD clustered in Northern Mexico and Mexico City. Each standard deviation increase in DISLI was associated with higher odds of SIDD (OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.06-1.12) and lower odds of MOD (OR: 0.93, 0.88-0.99). Speaking an indigenous language was associated with higher odds of SIDD (OR: 1.35, 1.16-1.57) and lower odds of MARD (OR 0.58, 0.45-0.74). Interpretation: Diabetes prevalence in Mexico is rising in the context of regional and sociodemographic inequalities across distinct diabetes subgroups. SIDD is a subgroup of concern that may be associated with inadequate diabetes management, mainly in marginalized states. The objective was to identify the optimal stage of production to evaluate the resistance of Pelibuey ewes against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Faecal egg count (FEC) was used to classify the ewes as resistant, sensible or intermediate against GIN. Forty-seven ewes were mating during 30 d. The gestation was verified by ultrasonography, and the breeding date was used to calculate the productive stages. Faeces were taken weekly to determine the FEC. Blood samples were taken to determine the packed cell volume (PCV), the peripheral eosinophils count (PEC), plasma protein concentration (PP), and Immunoglobulin A (IgA) against Haemonchus contortus. The body condition score (BCS) was recorded at each visit. Six moments during the study (early, mid and late gestation; early, mid and late lactation) were considered. The ewes were classified according to FEC (mean FEC ± three standard errors). The higher FEC occurred during all lactation stages than during early and mid-gestation stages (P<0.05). PCV, PP, and BCS during early gestation stage were higher than shown during the lactation stages (P<0.01). The PEC and IgA were higher during all lactation stages than early and mid-gestation stages (P<0.05). Concerning the type of birth, double births showed higher FEC than single birth (P<0.01). The highest values of accuracy (100 %) and concordance (Youden's J = 1.0) were found during early lactation. Therefore, it is concluded that the optimal stage of production to evaluate phenotypic resistance against GIN infections in Pelibuey ewes was during the early lactation.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) active cases continue to demand the development of safe and effective treatments. This is the first clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of oral thymic peptides. ; We conducted a nonrandomized phase 2 trial with a historic control group to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a daily 250-mg oral dose of thymic peptides in the treatment of hospitalized Covid-19 patients. Comparisons based on standard care from registry data were performed after propensity score matching. The primary outcomes were survival, time to recovery, and number of participants with treatment-related adverse events or side effects by day 20. ; A total of 44 patients were analyzed in this study: 22 in the thymic peptide group and 22 in the standard care group. There were no deaths in the intervention group compared to 24% mortality in standard care by day 20 (log-rank P=0.02). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significantly shorter time to recovery by day 20 in the thymic peptide group than in the standard care group (median, 6 days vs. 12 days; hazard ratio for recovery, 2.75 [95% confidence interval, 1.34 to 5.62]; log-rank P=0.002). No side effects or adverse events were reported. ; In patients hospitalized with Covid-19, the use of thymic peptides resulted in no side effects, adverse events, or deaths by day 20. Compared with the registry data, a significantly shorter time to recovery and mortality reduction were measured.

The gray snapper Lutjanus griseus is a commercially important fish species along its distribution range in the western Atlantic Ocean. However, despite its importance, there is still little knowledge about its parasitic fauna for the Mexican coasts of the Gulf of Mexico. The aims of this research were to generate a list of the parasitic fauna present in juvenile gray snapper L. griseus from a coastal lagoon located in southeastern Mexico, to evaluate the infection levels of parasites and to determine the relationship between the abundance of parasites and the fish size and condition factor. Samples of L. griseus (12 - 29.2 mm) were obtained in two periods of the year (dry and rainy seasons) to examine the intra-annual variability of its parasitic fauna. A total of 17 parasite species were recorded belonging to six taxonomic groups (Myxozoa, Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda and Acanthocephala). The highest levels of infection (abundance, prevalence and intensity of infection) were found for the monogeneans Euryhaliotrema griseus and Euryhaliotrema fastigatum. There were no significant correlations between the total abundance of parasites and the fish condition and size (total length) in not any of the two seasons studied, suggesting that the body size and the biological condition index of the host did not directly influence the abundance of parasites in early life stages of L. griseus. Moreover, the species of parasites found that could be zoonotic for humans through the consumption of raw or inadequately cooked fish were the nematodes Contracaecum sp. type 1, Contracaecum sp. type 2, Cucullanus pargi and Pseudoterranova sp. The presence of the monogeneans E. griseus and E. fastigatum was also highlighted because these ectoparasite species are known to cause harm to fish under culture systems. All the parasite species found in this study, except nematodes, were new records of geographic distribution.

INTRODUCTION: LipStaT® lip repositioning surgery using a diode laser for the management of gummy smiles offers promising and consistent long-term results. OBJECTIVE: To describe the technique through a clinical case, including its indications, preoperative evaluation, surgical approach, and recommendations after the intervention. CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old woman with excessive gingival display (EGD) of 4 mm when smiling; the LipStaT® technique was performed with a 940 nm diode laser to remove a strip of mucosa by ablating the epithelial tissue, and thus, achieve aesthetic, harmonic and functional results. The inflammation and postoperative pain were treated with the diode laser assisted lymphatic drainage technique. After follow-up, a satisfactory tissue response was observed, and no pain or inflammation was reported. CONCLUSION: The use of a 940 nm diode laser proved to be an effective treatment option for patients with a gummy smile, allowing control of intraoperative bleeding and improvement of the healing process obtaining predictable long-term results.

AIMS: A culture medium based on apple bagasse was designed and tested as a substrate for biomass production of conventional and unconventional native wine yeasts. METHODS AND RESULTS: The physicochemical characterization of the apple bagasse was carried out and its potential utility as a constituent of a complete culture medium for the production of yeast biomass was analysed using the experimental statistical designs. Growth parameters of conventional and nonconventional Patagonian wine yeasts were analysed with Placket-Burman designs and response surface methodology, comparing in each assay the apple bagasse substrate with the commonly used substrate for biomass development, cane molasses. Culture media composition was optimized and models were validated. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that, both from a nutritional and from an economic point of view, apple bagasse constitutes a more advantageous substrate than cane molasses for the propagation of native yeasts from Patagonia. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: We used an alternate carbon-rich material, generously available in our region, originally generated as fruit industrial waste, to transform it into a source of sustainable, economically profitable and environmentally friendly energy resource.

Abstract Introduction Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting approximately 5% of the world population, with symptoms that may persist into adulthood. Despite the findings on the clinical course of this disorder, information regarding comorbidity patterns, psychosocial and executive functioning in adult life in those with and without ADHD in Latin American samples is scarce. Objective The aim of this study is to compare the comorbidity pattern, psychosocial, and executive functioning of adults with and without ADHD from a clinical sample. Method One hundred and fifty-one patients between 20 and 45 years, with screened positively on ASRS-V1.1, were invited to continue an evaluation process as part of clinical research program (PROMETEO): 1) K-SADS-PL Mx interview, 2) MINI-Plus interview, ASRS-V1-1 18 item version, BRIEF self-reported questionnaire, SCQA-ADHD, and 3) Individual case review by clinical expert in ADHD. Results Individuals in the ADHD group had a higher average of comorbid disorders (2.5 SD 1.1 vs. 1.3 SD 1.0 respectively, F = .439; t = -6.621; df = 149; p < .001), more likelihood of procrastinating (OR = 6.5; 95% CI[2.6, 16.2]; z = 4.0) and were more likely to present difficulties in both the behavior regulation index (OR = 104.9; 95% CI[31.8, 345.7]; z = 7.65) and the metacognitive index (OR = 94.79; 95% CI[29.10, 308.76]; z = 7.56) compared to the non-ADHD group, regardless of gender. Discussion and conclusions Our results indicate that the ADHD adult group presented with more comorbidity, and worse psychosocial and executive functioning than non-ADHD adults.


Resumen Introducción El trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH) es un trastorno del neurodesarrollo que afecta aproximadamente al 5% de la población mundial, persistiendo hasta la adultez. A pesar de los hallazgos acerca del curso clínico de este trastorno, la información es escasa con respecto a los patrones de comorbilidad, funcionamiento psicosocial y ejecutivo en la vida adulta entre aquellos con y sin TDAH en muestras latinoamericanas. Objetivo Comparar el patrón de comorbilidad, el funcionamiento psicosocial y ejecutivo de adultos con y sin TDAH de una muestra clínica. Método Ciento cincuenta y un pacientes entre 20 y 45 años, quienes inicialmente presentaron un tamizaje positivo del ASRS-V1.1, fueron evaluados dentro de un programa de investigación clínica (PROMETEO) con los siguientes instrumentos: 1) la entrevista K-SADS-PL-Mx, 2) la entrevista MINI-Plus, la version de 18 items del ASRS-V1-1, y los cuestionarios autoaplicados BRIEF y SCQA-ADHD y 3) Revisión de cada caso por un clínico experto en el diagnóstico de TDAH. Resultados El grupo de TDAH comparado con aquel sin TDAH presentó un mayor promedio de trastornos comórbidos (2.5 DE 1.1 vs 1.3 DE 1.0 respectivamente, F = .439; t = -6.621; gl = 149; p < .001), mayor probabilidad de procrastinar (OR = 6.5; 95% IC[2.6, 16.2]; z = 4.0), y mayor probabilidad de presentar dificultades tanto en el índice de regulación de la conducta (OR = 104.9; 95% IC[31.8, 345.7]; z = 7.65) como en el índice metacognitivo (OR = 94.79; 95% IC[29.10, 308.76]; z = 7.56) independientemente del sexo. Discusión y conclusión Nuestros resultados señalan que los adultos con TDAH presentan mayor comorbilidad y peor funcionamiento psicosocial y ejecutivo que los adultos sin TDAH.

The clinical and pathologic characterisation of two fatal cases of tick-borne rickettsiosis in rural (El Valle) and urban (City of Panama) Panama are described. Clinical and autopsy findings were non-specific, but the molecular analysis was used to identify Rickettsia rickettsii in both cases. No ticks were collected in El Valle, while in the urban case, R. rickettsii was detected in Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l., representing the first molecular finding in this tick in Panama and Central America.

This study compared the phenotypic susceptibility of Pelibuey and Katahdin female lambs against gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) under grazing conditions in the hot humid tropics of Mexico. The study was performed during the rainy season (August to October, 2014). It included 27 Pelibuey and 12 Katahdin female lambs from 6 months of age and live weight of 21.0 ± 3.7 and 23.3 ± 3.6 kg, respectively. Lambs were reared free of GIN infection before the study. The study lasted 91 days. Animals were weighed and sampled (blood and feces) on days 0 and 28 and every 7 days onwards. Fecal samples were obtained to determine fecal eggs of GIN per gram (EPG), and blood samples were used to determine the packed cell volume (PCV), the peripheral eosinophil counts (PECs), and optical densities (ODs) for IgA. The EPG counts were significantly lower for Pelibuey lambs compared to Katahdin throughout the study (P < 0.001). Similarly, Pelibuey lambs had higher mean PCV (P < 0.01) and PEC (P < 0.05) than Katahdin lambs during the study. The total weight gain and OD for IgA were similar between breeds (P > 0.05). Negative associations (P < 0.05) between EPG and PCV or PEC were moderate to strong for the lambs of both breeds. No association was found between EPG and IgA. In conclusion, Pelibuey lambs showed phenotypic evidence of higher resistance to natural GIN infections compared to Katahdin lambs sharing the same grazing conditions in the hot humid tropics. The most accurate phenotypic markers to identify a difference in susceptibility were EPG and PEC.

RESUMEN

La esclerodermia pertenece a un grupo de enfermedades autoinmunes del tejido conectivo, que produce: inflamación, disfunción vascular y fibrosis excesiva del tejido conectivo de soporte de la piel y los órganos viscerales. A nivel bucal se evidencian afecciones como xerostomía, microstomía, caries y enfermedad periodontal. El tratamiento odontológico requiere un manejo integral por parte de los profesionales, que comprenda las patologías orales presentes y los síntomas permanentes característicos de la enfermedad sistémica de base. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar dos casos de esclerodermia resaltando sus manifestaciones orales presentes.


Scleroderma belongs to a group of autoimmune connective tissue diseases that causes inflammation, vascular dysfunction and excessive fibrosis of the connective tissue supporting the skin and visceral organs. A level oral conditions such as xerostomia, microstomia, caries and periodontal disease are evident. Dental treatment requires a comprehensive management by professionals who understand oral pathologies and permanent characteristic symptoms of systemic disease. The aim of this paper is to present two cases of scleroderma highlighting present oral manifestations.

Introducción: El objetivo del estudio es describir y analizar la función tiroidea en el paciente crítico. Describir si algún patrón se asocia a una mayor tasa de mortalidad. Métodos: Se analizó a todos los pacientes ingresados en nuestra Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos, entre enero de 2015 y agosto de 2016, y que permanecieron allí, al menos, siete días. Resultados: Se incluyeron 242 pacientes. Se hallaron diferencias significativas en los valores medios de los índices de gravedad entre los no supervivientes y los supervivientes: SOFA (10,45 vs. 7,9); APACHE II (24,42 vs. 20,71); SAPS II (63,14 vs. 50,69). Se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en los valores medios de T3 en el grupo de supervivientes y no supervivientes: 1,5 pg/ml vs. 1,15 pg/ml (p <0,001; IC95% 0,224 ± 0,487). No hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas en los valores medios de T4 y TSH. Al realizar el subanálisis según grupo de ingreso, no se hallaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre las cifras de TSH, T3 o T4. Sí hubo diferencias significativas en los valores medios de T3 en la mayor parte de los subgrupos. Conclusiones: Se hallaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los valores medios de T3 en el grupo de supervivientes y no supervivientes. Los valores de T3 parecen asociarse a la mortalidad. Su descenso no parece asociarse a la enfermedad subyacente, sino a su gravedad.(AU)


Introduction: The aim of this study is to describe and analyse the thyroid function in the critically ill patient, and to describe if any pattern is associated with a higher mortality rate. Methods: Patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, between January 2015 and August 2016, with a stay of seven days or more, were enrolled. Results: Two hundred and forty-two patients were included. Significant differences were observed in the severity scores related to mortality during their stay in the Intensive Care Unit (no survivors vs. survivors): SOFA (10.45 vs. 7.9); APACHE II (24.42 vs. 20.71); SAPS II (63.14 vs. 50.69). Statistically significant differences were observed in the mean values of T3 between survivors and non-survivors: 1.5 pg/ml vs. 1.15 pg/ml (p <0.001; CI95% 0.224 ± 0.487). There were no statistically significant differences in the mean values of T4 and TSH. After subgroup analysis according to the admission group, no significant differences among the TSH, T3 and T4 values were detected. However a statistically difference in T3 average value was found in most subgroups. Conclusions: A statistically significant difference was found in mean T3 values in survivors and non-survivors. T3 concentration appears to be associated with mortality. Decrease of this thyroid hormone does not seem to associate with the underlying disease, but with its severity.(AU)

La Aspergilosis es una infección micótica oportunista que afecta principalmente a pacientes inmunodeprimidos con neutropenia, en quienes produce a menudo enfermedad invasiva de curso fulminante. Las manifestaciones cutáneas de la Aspergilosis son infrecuentes, apareciendo en el 5 a 10% de los casos diseminados. Comunicamos un caso de Aspergilosis en una mujer adulta con neutropenia severa por enfermedad hematológica, con afectación pulmonar y sinusal, que presenta múltiples lesiones ulceronecróticas en piel y mucosas, con evolución fatal. Las lesiones mucocutáneas de la Aspergilosis no son específicas, obligan a varios diagnósticos diferenciales y, como en este caso, la biopsia para estudio histopatológico y micológico es necesaria para el diagnóstico.


Aspergillosis is an opportunistic fungal infection that primarily affects immunocompromised patients with neutropenia, in whom invasive disease often results in fulminant course. Cutaneous manifestations of aspergillosis are rare, occurring in 5-10% of cases scattered. We report a case of aspergillosis in an adult woman with severe neutropenia for hematologic disease, lung and sinus disease, having multiple ulceronecróticas skin lesions and mucous membranes, with fatal outcome. The mucocutaneous lesions of aspergillosis are nonspecific, forcing several differential diagnoses, and as in this case, the biopsy for histopathological and mycological study is required for diagnosis.

Sheep have been suggested to use their senses to perceive plant properties and associate their intake with consequences after ingestion. However, sheep with browsing experience do not seem to select against tannin-rich browsing materials in cafeteria trials. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between the chemical composition, selectivity index (SI), preference and intake rate (IR) of tannin-containing forage trees offered to sheep in cafeteria experiments. Four trees were selected for their condensed tannin content and their varying biological activities. Havardia albicans (high biological activity), Leucaena leucocephala (medium biological activity), Acacia gaumeri (low biological activity) and Brosimum alicastrum (very low biological activity) were used in this study. Ten hair sheep (23.7kg±1.43LW) with eight months of browsing experience in native vegetation were used in this study. Polyethylene glycol (PEG 3600MW) was administered to five sheep during all experiments. In experiment 1, fresh foliage from all trees was offered ad libitum for 4h. In experiment 2, B. alicastrum was withdrawn and the preference was determined again. The forage preference in experiment 1 was A. gaumeri (14.77gDM/kgLW)>B. alicastrum (11.77gDM/kgLW)>H. albicans (3.71gDM/kgLW)=L. leucocephala (1.87gDM/kgLW) (P<0.05). The preference in experiment 2 was A. gaumeri>H. albicans=L. leucocephala. PEG administration had no effect on the preference or IR. The intake rate seemed to have been affected by the plant density. Moreover, fiber compounds were found to be better predictors of DM intake than polyphenolic compounds at levels typically found in the evaluated forages. It was concluded that tannins and PEG did not modify the preferences of sheep in cafeteria trials. Thus, tannins are not involved in the preference regulation of animals with browsing experience.

Three non-Newtonian blood viscosity models plus the Newtonian one are analysed for a patient-specific thoracic aorta anatomical model under steady-state flow conditions via wall shear stress (WSS) distribution, non-Newtonian importance factors, blood viscosity and shear rate. All blood viscosity models yield a consistent WSS distribution pattern. The WSS magnitude, however, is influenced by the model used. WSS is found to be the lowest in the vicinity of the three arch branches and along the distal walls of the branches themselves. In this region, the local non-Newtonian importance factor and the blood viscosity are elevated, and the shear rate is low. The present study revealed that the Newtonian assumption is a good approximation at mid-and-high flow velocities, as the greater the blood flow, the higher the shear rate near the arterial wall. Furthermore, the capabilities of the applied non-Newtonian models appeared at low-flow velocities. It is concluded that, while the non-Newtonian power-law model approximates the blood viscosity and WSS calculations in a more satisfactory way than the other non-Newtonian models at low shear rates, a cautious approach is given in the use of this blood viscosity model. Finally, some preliminary transient results are presented.

PURPOSE: This study aims to asses a cancer fast-track programme (CFP) to shorten the time since a patient with suspicion of cancer is referred by the primary care (PC) physician to the specialized medical team. METHODS: Guidelines for main suspected tumours were designed to help PC physicians to detect and rapidly refer cases to the CFP oncology coordinator, who sent them to the appropriate department to accelerate diagnosis, staging and therapy. All patients analysed in this report were referred from June 2009 to July 2012. RESULTS: A total of 897 suspected cancer cases were submitted and finally 705 were studied. In 205 (29 %) a cancer diagnosis was confirmed within 23 days (median). Therapy was initiated within 46 days after referral (median). Early diagnoses with a potential curative approach were made in 166 (82 %). CONCLUSIONS: This CFP decreased the waiting time for cancer diagnosis, by improving communication between PC physician and specialized care teams. Most patients included in this program could get therapy with curative intent.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to select autochthonous yeasts with metabolic ability to degrade L-malic acid for its potential use in young wine deacidification. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty seven Patagonian nonSaccharomyces yeast of oenological origin were identified by conventional molecular methods and tested in their capability to grow at the expense of L-malic acid. Only four isolates belonging to Pichia kudriavzevii species showed this property, and one of them was selected to continue with the study. This isolate, named as P. kudriavzevii ÑNI15, was able to degrade L-malic acid in microvinifications, increasing the pH 0·2-0·3 units with a minimal effect on the acid structure of wine. Additionally, this isolate produced low levels of ethanol, important levels of glycerol (10·41 ± 0·48 g l(-1) ) and acceptable amounts of acetic acid (0·86 ± 0·13 g l(-1) ). In addition, it improved the sensorial attributes of wine increasing its fruity aroma. CONCLUSIONS: The selection of yeasts for oenological use among nonSaccharomyces species led to the finding of a yeast strain with novel and interesting oenological characteristics which could have significant implications in the production of well-balanced and more physicochemical and microbiological stable young wines. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The use of P. kudriavzevii ÑNI15 as mixed starter with S. cerevisiae would eliminate the cultural and cellar operations undertaken to adjust the musts acidity, therefore improving wine quality and reducing production costs.

We evaluated the effect of feeding dietary tannins from Lysiloma latisiliquum fresh forage on the saliva tannin-binding capacity of hair sheep lambs without previous exposure to tannin-rich (TR) fodder. Twenty-four hair sheep lambs (13.6±3.04 kg LW) were fed a tannin-free diet at the beginning of the experimental period (from day 10 to 13). On day 14, lambs were distributed into three groups (n=8): control group (CG), fed with the tannin-free diet (from D10 to D112); tannin short-term group (TST), fed the basal diet and 650 g of L. latisiliquum forage (from D14 to D55); tannin long-term group (TLT), fed the basal diet and 650 g of L. latisiliquum forage (from D14 to D112). Saliva samples were collected from the mouth of each lamb in the morning before feeding time on D10 and D14 (baseline period), on D49 and D56 (period 1) and on D97 and D112 (period 2). The tannin binding response of salivary protein (∆% turbidity) was determined with the haze development test (HDT) using either tannic acid or L. latisiliquum forage acetone extract. A turbidity protein index (TPI) was calculated as (∆% turbidity/[salivary protein (mg)]). Differences in HDT and TPI in the different groups were compared by repeated measures ANOVA using Proc Mixed. All groups had similar ∆% turbidity throughout the experiment (P>0.05). At baseline and period 1, the TPI of the different groups was similar (P>0.05). On period 2 the TLT group showed higher TPI compared with CG (P<0.05). Meanwhile, CG and TST showed similar salivary TPI. The saliva of hair sheep lambs consuming TR L. latisiliquum fresh fodder (TLT group) increased their TPI compared with control lambs not exposed to tannins.

Múltiples son los factores que pueden desencadenar fracturas de porcelana en una prótesis parcial fija metal-cerámica, aunque esta situación no siempre determina un reemplazo. La reparación de porcelana mediante el uso de resina compuesta es una alternativa con ventajas de una fácil manipulación y bajo costo. El objetivo del presente artículo es presentar a la resina compuesta como una opción con resultados considerables en la reparación de prótesis metal-cerámicas fracturadas, con alto compromiso estético. Se presenta un caso clínico de reparación intraoral de una prótesis fija metal-cerámica de seis unidades en el sector anterior superior. El tratamiento realizado incluyó fresado de la superficie de porcelana, aislamiento absoluto, grabado ácido con fluoruro de fosfato acidulado, microarenado con óxido de aluminio, silanización, aplicación del adhesivo convencional y tres tipos de resinas compuestas, resina opaca, microhíbrida y resina de nanorelleno. A los 8 meses se evaluó la adaptación de la reparación mediante un explorador e inspección visual, secando con una jeringa triple donde no se observó signos de percolación alguna. Basado en los resultados se puede considerar a esta combinación de resinas compuestas como una alternativa útil en la reparación de porcelana fracturada.


There are multiple factors that can trigger a fracture of porcelain in a metal-ceramic fixed partial denture, although a replacement is not always required. The porcelain repair using composite resin is an alternative with advantages such as easy handling and low cost. The aim of this paper is to present the composite as an option with significant results in the repair of fractured metal-ceramic prostheses, with a high aesthetic commitment. We report a case of intraoral repair of a six-unit metal-ceramic fixed prosthesis in the anterior superior sector. The treatment provided included milling of the surface of porcelain, absolute isolation, acid etching with acidulated phosphate fluoride, aluminium oxide sandblasting, silanization, conventional adhesive application and three types of composite resins: opaque resin, micro-hybrid resin and nanofilled resin. After 8 months we assessed the adaptation of the repair using a surface explorer and visual inspection, drying with a triple syringe. No signs of seepage were observed. Based on the results, this combination of composite resins can be considered as a useful alternative in the repair of broken porcelain.

Los biomateriales son sustancias naturales, sintéticas o una combinación de ambas que sustituyen partes u órganos completos del cuerpo humano con una apropiada respuesta por parte del hospedador basado en los principios de biocompatibilidad y biofuncionalidad; la periodoncia como parte de las ciencias médicas se beneficia del uso y aplicación de los mismos para mejorar y simplificar los resultados de la reparación de tejidos, teniendo como meta principal la regeneración de éstos. Por su versatilidad y buenos resultados, los injertos gingivales son los procedimientos más usados dentro de la práctica clínica para recubrir raíces denudadas; sin embargo, requieren de tejidos donantes, por lo que se afectan dos sitios quirúrgicos. Cuando dentro de los diferentes tipos de tratamientos se cuenta con biomateriales que pueden sustituir esos tejidos donantes y lograr resultados similares, se puede simplificar entonces el acto quirúrgico y el post operatorio del paciente. Este artículo muestra como la combinación del Apafill-G, el Membracel y el Tisuacryl®, fueron efectivos en el tratamiento de dos recesiones periodontales bilaterales de los dientes 13 y 23 en un paciente de 35 años, con antecedentes de buena salud, que fue tratado en la Clínica Estomatológica de Varadero mediante la técnica quirúrgica de regeneración tisular guiada, utilizada para lograr recubrimiento radicular. La realización de la misma simplificó el procedimiento, sin la necesidad de extracción de tejidos donadores, se logró una cantidad adecuada de tejido adherido coronal y una cobertura radicular completa , sin que estuvieran presentes las molestias post operatorias comunes que se generan cuando se utilizan injertos gingivales


Biomaterials are natural substances, synthetic or a combination of both to replace parts or whole organs of the human body with an appropriate response by the host based on the principles of biocompatibility and biofunctionality, periodontics as part of medical science benefits from the use and applying them to improve and simplify the results of tissue repair, having as main goal the regeneration of these. Because of its versatility and good results, gingival grafts are the procedures used in clinical practice to cover denuded roots, however, require donor tissue, so it involved two surgical sites. When within the different types of treatments with biomaterials that can replace those tissues donors and achieve similar results, then you can simplify the surgery and the postoperative patient. This article shows how the combination of Apafill-G, and MEMBRACEL Tisuacryl ® were effective in the treatment of periodontal recessions bilateral two teeth 13 and 23 in a 35 year old patient with a history of good health, which was treated Dental Clinic in Varadero by the surgical technique of guided tissue regeneration, used to achieve root coverage. The simplified embodiment of the same procedure, without the need for removal of tissue donors, was obtained an adequate amount of adhering tissue and coronal complete root coverage, without the presence common postoperative discomfort generated when using gingival grafts
