BACKGROUND: A plethora of weight management apps are available, but many individuals, especially those living with overweight and obesity, still struggle to achieve adequate weight loss. An emerging area in weight management is the support for one's self-regulation over momentary eating impulses. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of a novel artificial intelligence-assisted weight management app in improving eating behaviors in a Southeast Asian cohort. METHODS: A single-group pretest-posttest study was conducted. Participants completed the 1-week run-in period of a 12-week app-based weight management program called the Eating Trigger-Response Inhibition Program (eTRIP). This self-monitoring system was built upon 3 main components, namely, (1) chatbot-based check-ins on eating lapse triggers, (2) food-based computer vision image recognition (system built based on local food items), and (3) automated time-based nudges and meal stopwatch. At every mealtime, participants were prompted to take a picture of their food items, which were identified by a computer vision image recognition technology, thereby triggering a set of chatbot-initiated questions on eating triggers such as who the users were eating with. Paired 2-sided t tests were used to compare the differences in the psychobehavioral constructs before and after the 7-day program, including overeating habits, snacking habits, consideration of future consequences, self-regulation of eating behaviors, anxiety, depression, and physical activity. Qualitative feedback were analyzed by content analysis according to 4 steps, namely, decontextualization, recontextualization, categorization, and compilation. RESULTS: The mean age, self-reported BMI, and waist circumference of the participants were 31.25 (SD 9.98) years, 28.86 (SD 7.02) kg/m2, and 92.60 (SD 18.24) cm, respectively. There were significant improvements in all the 7 psychobehavioral constructs, except for anxiety. After adjusting for multiple comparisons, statistically significant improvements were found for overeating habits (mean -0.32, SD 1.16; P<.001), snacking habits (mean -0.22, SD 1.12; P<.002), self-regulation of eating behavior (mean 0.08, SD 0.49; P=.007), depression (mean -0.12, SD 0.74; P=.007), and physical activity (mean 1288.60, SD 3055.20 metabolic equivalent task-min/day; P<.001). Forty-one participants reported skipping at least 1 meal (ie, breakfast, lunch, or dinner), summing to 578 (67.1%) of the 862 meals skipped. Of the 230 participants, 80 (34.8%) provided textual feedback that indicated satisfactory user experience with eTRIP. Four themes emerged, namely, (1) becoming more mindful of self-monitoring, (2) personalized reminders with prompts and chatbot, (3) food logging with image recognition, and (4) engaging with a simple, easy, and appealing user interface. The attrition rate was 8.4% (21/251). CONCLUSIONS: eTRIP is a feasible and effective weight management program to be tested in a larger population for its effectiveness and sustainability as a personalized weight management program for people with overweight and obesity. Rationale & Objective: Limited data exist on longitudinal kidney outcomes after nonsurgical obesity treatments. We investigated the effects of intensive lifestyle intervention on kidney function over 10 years. Study Design: Post hoc analysis of Action for Health in Diabetes (Look AHEAD) randomized controlled trial. Setting & Participants: We studied 4,901 individuals with type 2 diabetes and body mass index of ≥25 kg/m2 enrolled in Look AHEAD (2001-2015). The original Look AHEAD trial excluded individuals with 4+ urine dipstick protein, serum creatinine level of >1.4 mg/dL (women), 1.5 mg/dL (men), or dialysis dependence. Exposures: Intensive lifestyle intervention versus diabetes support and education (ie, usual care). Outcome: Primary outcome was estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, mL/min/1.73 m2) slope. Secondary outcomes were mean eGFR, slope, and mean urine albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR, mg/mg). Analytical Approach: Linear mixed-effects models with random slopes and intercepts to evaluate the association between randomization arms and within-individual repeated measures of eGFR and UACR. We tested for effect modification by baseline eGFR. Results: At baseline, mean eGFR was 89, and 83% had a normal UACR. Over 10 years, there was no difference in eGFR slope (+0.064 per year; 95% CI: -0.036 to 0.16; P = 0.21) between arms. Slope or mean UACR did not differ between arms. Baseline eGFR, categorized as eGFR of <80, 80-100, or >100, did not modify the intervention's effect on eGFR slope or mean. Limitations: Loss of muscle may confound creatinine-based eGFR. Conclusions: In patients with type 2 diabetes and preserved kidney function, intensive lifestyle intervention did not change eGFR slope over 10 years. Among participants with baseline eGFR <80, lifestyle intervention had a slightly higher longitudinal mean eGFR than usual care. Further studies evaluating the effects of intensive lifestyle intervention in people with kidney disease are needed.


Lifestyle interventions can improve chronic kidney disease risk factors, specifically diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. But, the effects of lifestyle intervention on change in kidney function (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR]) over time are not well established. We studied Action for Health in Diabetes (Look AHEAD) trial data because all participants were affected by diabetes and overweight or obesity. Look AHEAD randomized participants to intensive lifestyle intervention or diabetes support and education (ie, usual care). We compared eGFR change over 10 years between groups, but found no difference. However, the intervention group maintained slightly higher eGFR than usual care, especially if eGFR was relatively low at baseline. Our study suggests lifestyle intervention may preserve eGFR, but dedicated studies in individuals with chronic kidney disease are needed.

Despite the existence of effective treatments, obesity continues to present a severe public health crisis. Limited access to treatments works against efforts to reduce obesity prevalence. A major barrier to treatment access is a lack of insurance coverage. This study focused on an important population of stakeholders: benefits managers. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between attitudes about insurance coverage of obesity treatments and obesity stigma. Benefits managers have the ability to advocate for insurance coverage of medical interventions. We assessed whether attitudes toward covering obesity benefits for employees could be modified by receiving targeted information or were associated with particular factors. We recruited participants from Dun & Bradstreet's employer database using emails. Participants were randomized to one of three conditions that provided written information about: (1) prevalence of obesity (control), (2) prevalence + financial implications of obesity, and (3) prevalence + physiology of obesity. Questionnaires were self-administered online. The response rate was 4.8%, with 404 participants meeting eligibility criteria. While attitudes toward coverage of obesity interventions did not differ significantly based on condition (p > 0.05), gender, history of previous obesity treatment, and an individual's likelihood to attribute obesity to biological and environmental factors showed significant associations with supporting coverage of obesity treatment (p < 0.05). Findings suggest that understanding obesity as a condition caused by biological factors as opposed to personal responsibility and behavior is associated with greater support for coverage of all its treatments.

Over the last century, hundreds of evaluations have been conducted to examine weight-management interventions related to diet, physical activity, and behavior therapy. These investigations have contributed to a growing body of knowledge that has consistently advanced the field of obesity treatment, while also revealing some persistent challenges. This narrative review summarizes key findings from randomized controlled trials conducted in adults that have combined diet, physical activity, and behavior therapy, an approach variously referred to as behavioral treatment, comprehensive lifestyle modification, or intensive lifestyle intervention. The review shows that current behavioral approaches induce average reductions in baseline body weight of 5 to 10% at 6 to 12 months. Such losses have proven effective in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes in persons with impaired glucose tolerance and in improving other obesity-related complications. These benefits have also been associated with reductions in healthcare costs. Despite these advances, behavioral treatment is challenged by the need for larger losses to achieve optimal improvements in health, by difficulties associated with maintaining weight loss, and by barriers limiting access to treatment. New anti-obesity medications, when combined with behavioral obesity treatment, hold promise of addressing the first two issues.

Background: Formula and breastfeeding are known factors associated with infant weight trajectories. Evidence exploring the effect of expressed human milk feeding on infant weight in the community setting has not been well synthesized. Objectives: This systematic review examined (1) weight changes among infants fed expressed human milk and (2) differences in weight change between infants fed expressed human milk and infants fed at the breast or infant formula via bottle. Methods: A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The quality of each study was appraised using the Joanna Briggs Critical Appraisal Tools. Results: A total of six studies met the eligibility criteria and included a total of 5,152 infants. The within-subject analysis identified only 31 infants strictly or predominantly fed expressed human milk. The between-subject analysis comparing expressed human milk feeding to the available comparison groups (formula-fed or direct at the breastfed) revealed that higher weight gains were observed in the weight trajectories among infants in the bottle or formula-fed conditions in four of the six included studies. Conclusions: Findings from the few studies included in this review found a difference in the infant weight gain patterns among expressed human milk-fed infants when compared with their respective feeding groups (directly breastfed or formula-fed). Further research is needed to corroborate these findings and elucidate the clinical significance of the differences in weight gain patterns observed across infant feeding groups.

Background: Nutrition in pregnancy is a component of the Council on Resident Education in obstetrics and gynecology core curriculum; however, no studies currently examine adherence to this goal. Objectives: Our objective was to assess obstetrics and gynecology (Ob/Gyn) residents' education and knowledge surrounding nutrition in pregnancy, including (1) amount of dedicated didactic time to and attitudes toward, (2) subjective comfort in counseling patients on, and (3) objective knowledge of pregnancy-related nutrition. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional electronic survey-based study. A 28-item questionnaire was distributed to residents enrolled in Ob/Gyn training programs across the United States in 2022. Results: From 247 Ob/Gyn residency programs, 218 residents across postgraduate years and from geographically diverse locations consented to participation and completed all survey questions. Almost half (48%) of participants reported 0 hours per year of dedicated nutrition-related education, 49% reported 1-2 hours, and 3% reported >2 hours. Most residents (92%) strongly agreed or agreed that education regarding pregnancy-related nutrition guidelines would be useful for clinical practice. However, less than one-third (31%) of residents reported feeling comfortable counseling patients on nutrition in pregnancy. On assessment of residents' objective knowledge of pregnancy-related nutrition, mean percentage of correct responses was 74%. Conclusions: This study identifies a gap in graduate medical education, specifically a disconnect between the recognized impact of nutrition on pregnancy outcomes and residents' ability to confidently and effectively counsel patients on nutrition in pregnancy. Results demonstrate a need to develop curriculum and interventions to educate Ob/Gyn residents about pregnancy-related nutrition.

BACKGROUND: It is not known whether behavioral weight loss can attenuate blood oxygen level-dependent responses to food stimuli. OBJECTIVES: This randomized controlled trial assessed the effects of a commercially available behavioral weight loss program (WW, WeightWatchers) compared to a wait-list control on blood oxygen level-dependent response to food cues. METHODS: Females with obesity ( N = 61) were randomized to behavioral weight loss or wait-list control. At baseline and follow-up, participants completed assessments that included functional magnetic resonance imaging scans to assess response to images of high-calorie foods (HCF) or low-calorie foods (LCF), and neutral objects. RESULTS: There were no significant between-group differences in change from baseline to follow-up in any regions of the brain in response to viewing HCF or LCF. From baseline to follow-up, participants in behavioral weight loss, compared with wait-list control, reported significantly greater increases in desire for LCF. Changes in liking and palatability of LCF and liking, palatability, and desire for HCF did not differ between groups. DISCUSSION: Behavioral weight loss was associated with increased desire for LCF without changes in neural reactivity to food cues. These results suggest that alteration of neurological processes underlying responsiveness to food is difficult to achieve through behavioral weight management alone.

OBJECTIVE: Food insecurity is associated with reduced dietary quality and excess weight gain. However, interventions that are effective for obesity among individuals with food insecurity are unclear. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize studies in which authors examined interventions for obesity among adults with food insecurity. METHODS: PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and EMBASE were searched from inception to October 2022. Studies were included if their authors reported on nonpharmacological and nonsurgical interventions that focused on adults with food insecurity and overweight/obesity and reported weight loss. RESULTS: A total of 1360 titles were reviewed during the electronic search, and only 5 studies met inclusion criteria. There were 2 primary types of interventions that have been tested: first, behavioral weight loss counseling with or without tailoring for individuals with food insecurity and, second, subsidies for food. Findings of the benefits of one type of intervention over another are mixed. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review highlights that the current evidence for interventions that address food insecurity and obesity is mixed and limited in scope. There is a need for rigorous controlled trials to examine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of interventions for weight management among individuals with food insecurity and obesity while considering sustainability.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines lifestyle modification for obesity management with the goal of identifying treatment components that could support the use of a new generation of anti-obesity medications (AOMs). RECENT FINDINGS: Semaglutide reliably reduces baseline body weight by approximately 15% at 68 weeks, in contrast to 5-10% for lifestyle modification. Tirzepatide induces mean losses as great as 20.9%. Both medications reduce energy intake by markedly enhancing satiation and decreasing hunger, and they appear to lessen the need for traditional cognitive and behavioral strategies (e.g., monitoring food intake) to achieve calorie restriction. Little, however, is known about whether patients who lose weight with these AOMs adopt healthy diet and activity patterns needed to optimize body composition, cardiometabolic health, and quality of life. When used with the new AOMs, the focus of lifestyle modification is likely to change from inducing weight loss (through calorie restriction) to facilitating patients' adoption of dietary and activity patterns that will promote optimal changes in body composition and overall health.

The effects of tirzepatide, a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, on weight reduction after successful intensive lifestyle intervention are unknown. This double-blind, placebo-controlled trial randomized (1:1) adults with body mass index ≥30 or ≥27 kg/m2 and at least one obesity-related complication (excluding diabetes), who achieved ≥5.0% weight reduction after a 12-week intensive lifestyle intervention, to tirzepatide maximum tolerated dose (10 or 15 mg) or placebo once weekly for 72 weeks (n = 579). The treatment regimen estimand assessed effects regardless of treatment adherence in the intention-to-treat population. The coprimary endpoint of additional mean per cent weight change from randomization to week 72 was met with changes of -18.4% (standard error (s.e.) 0.7) with tirzepatide and 2.5% (s.e. 1.0) with placebo (estimated treatment difference -20.8 percentage points (95% confidence interval (CI) -23.2%, -18.5%; P < 0.001). The coprimary endpoint of the percentage of participants achieving additional weight reduction ≥5% was met with 87.5% (s.e. 2.2) with tirzepatide and 16.5% (s.e. 3.0) with placebo achieving this threshold (odds ratio 34.6%; 95% CI 19.2%, 62.6%; P < 0.001). The most common adverse events with tirzepatide were gastrointestinal, with most being mild to moderate in severity. Tirzepatide provided substantial additional reduction in body weight in participants who had achieved ≥5.0% weight reduction with intensive lifestyle intervention. Similarities have been reported between the diagnostic and associated characteristics of binge-eating disorder (BED) and substance-related and non-substance-related disorders. This has resulted in interest in using addiction models to inform clinical care for people with BED. The purpose of this paper was to review features of addiction in BED with a focus on clinical implications. First, we briefly summarize similarities and differences in diagnostic and mechanistic features and symptoms for BED and food addiction, substance-related disorders, and non-substance-related disorders. Then we review aspects of addiction in BED that have clinical implications for screening and treatment of this condition. Similarities in diagnostic criteria between BED and substance-related and non-substance-related disorders include loss of control, greater use than intended, continued use despite adverse consequences, and marked distress. Addiction models may help inform aspects of clinical care of BED, particularly for shared antecedents and mechanisms underlying both disorders and to enhance engagement in treatment. Yet, there are large gaps in evidence regarding the effects of many aspects of addiction models to BED. More research is needed to examine the safety and efficacy of using addiction theories and frameworks for clinical strategies for BED.

Food insecurity affects more than 40 million individuals in the United States and is linked to negative health outcomes due, in part, to poor dietary quality. Despite the emergence of metabolomics as a modality to objectively characterize nutritional biomarkers, it is unclear whether food security is associated with any biomarkers of dietary quality. This scoping review aims to summarize studies that examined associations between nutritional biomarkers and food security, as well as studies that investigated metabolomic differences between people with and without food insecurity. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and AGRICOLA were searched through August 2022 for studies describing food insecurity and metabolic markers in blood, urine, plasma, hair, or nails. The 78 studies included consisted of targeted assays quantifying lipids, dietary nutrients, heavy metals, and environmental xenobiotics as biochemical features associated with food insecurity. Among those biomarkers which were quantified in at least five studies, none showed a consistent association with food insecurity. Although three biomarkers of dietary quality have been assessed between food-insecure versus food-secure populations, no studies have utilized untargeted metabolomics to characterize patterns of small molecules that distinguish between these two populations. Further studies are needed to characterize the dietary quality profiles of individuals with and without food insecurity.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Obesity in midlife is an established risk factor for dementia. In middle-aged adults, elevated body mass index (BMI) is associated with lower neurocognition and smaller hippocampal volumes. It is unclear whether behavioral weight loss (BWL) can improve neurocognition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether BWL, compared to wait list control (WLC), improved hippocampal volume and neurocognition. We also examined if baseline hippocampal volume and neurocognition were associated with weight loss. METHODS: We randomly assigned women with obesity (N = 61; mean±SD age=41.1 ± 9.9 years; BMI=38.6 ± 6.2 kg/m2; and 50.8% Black) to BWL or WLC. Participants completed assessments at baseline and follow-up including T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging scans and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Toolbox Cognition Battery. RESULTS: The BWL group lost 4.7 ± 4.9% of initial body weight at 16-25 weeks, which was significantly more than the WLC group which gained 0.2 ± 3.5% (p < 0.001). The BWL and WLC groups did not differ significantly in changes in hippocampal volume or neurocognition (ps>0.05). Baseline hippocampal volume and neurocognition scores were not significantly associated with weight loss (ps>0.05). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Contrary to our hypothesis, we found no overall benefit of BWL relative to WLC on hippocampal volumes or cognition in young- and middle-aged women. Baseline hippocampal volume and neurocognition were not associated with weight loss.

The current cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the effects of psychosocial factors and technology use on disordered eating in college students (aged 18 to 23 years) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. An online survey was distributed between February and April 2021. Participants completed questionnaires on eating disorder behaviors and cognitions, depressive symptoms, anxiety, impacts of the pandemic across personal and social domains, social media use, and screen time. Of all participants (N = 202), 40.1% of students reported moderate or greater depressive symptoms and 34.7% endorsed moderate or greater anxiety symptoms. Higher depressive symptoms were associated with increased odds of bulimia nervosa (BN) (p = 0.03) and binge eating disorder (p = 0.02). People with higher COVID-19 infection scores were at increased odds of reporting BN (p = 0.01). Mood disturbances and COVID-19 infection history were associated with increased eating disorder psychopathology in college students during the pandemic. Objective: To assess the efficacy of liraglutide 3.0 mg, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, for binge eating disorder (BED). Methods: Adults with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 kg/m2 enrolled in a pilot, 17-week double-blind, randomized controlled trial of liraglutide 3.0 mg/day for BED. The primary outcome was number of objective binge episodes (OBEs)/week. Binge remission, weight change, and psychosocial variables were secondary outcomes. Mixed effect models were used for continuous variables, and generalized estimating equations were used for remission rates. Results: Participants (n = 27) were 44.2 ± 10.6 years; BMI = 37.9 ± 11.8 kg/m2; 63% women; and 59% White and 41% Black. At baseline, the liraglutide group (n = 13) reported 4.7 ± 0.7 OBEs/week, compared with 3.0 ± 0.7 OBEs/week for the placebo group, p = 0.07. At week 17, OBEs/week decreased by 4.0 ± 0.6 in liraglutide participants and by 2.5 ± 0.5 in placebo participants (p = 0.37, mean difference = 1.2, 95% confidence interval 1.3, 2.0). BED remission rates of 44% and 36%, respectively, did not differ. Percent weight loss was significantly greater in the liraglutide versus the placebo group (5.2 ± 1.0% vs. 0.9 ± 0.7%, p = 0.005). Conclusion: Participants in both groups reported reductions in OBEs, with the liraglutide group showing clinically meaningful weight loss. A pharmacy medication dispensing error was a significant limitation of this study. Further research on liraglutide and other GLP-1 agonists for BED is warranted.

OBJECTIVE: This review synthesized literature on the relationship between food insecurity and binge eating. METHODS: Relevant studies were identified by searching PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and gray literature from inception to October 2022. Eligible studies included primary research that assessed the relationship between food insecurity and binge eating. Data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers. Pooled odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were obtained from random effect models with the R package meta. Analyses were stratified by binge eating versus binge-eating disorder (BED), study type (cross-sectional vs. longitudinal), and age (adults vs. adolescents). RESULTS: We included 24 articles that reported on 20 studies, and 13 articles were included in the meta-analysis. Based on the random effects meta-analysis, the odds of adults in the food insecure group having binge eating were 1.66 (95% CI = 1.42, 1.93) times the odds of adults in the food secure group having binge eating. The odds of adults in the food insecure group having BED were 2.70 (95% CI = 1.47, 4.96) times the odds of adults in the food secure group having BED. Insufficient data were available for a meta-analysis on adolescents or longitudinal relationships. CONCLUSIONS: These findings support that food insecurity is associated with binge eating in adults. There is a need for research to investigate the mechanisms underlying this relationship. Results highlight the importance of screening participants with food insecurity for disordered eating behaviors and vice versa. Future research is needed to examine whether interventions targeting food insecurity may help to mitigate disordered eating behaviors. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE: Food insecurity is a common but under-recognized contributor to binge eating. In this article, we systematically reviewed research that has been published on the relationship between food insecurity and binge eating. We found support that food insecurity should be considered in the prevention and treatment of binge eating.


OBJETIVO: Esta revisión sintetizó la literatura sobre la relación entre la inseguridad alimentaria y comer en atracones. MÉTODOS: Los estudios relevantes se identificaron mediante búsquedas en PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO y literatura gris desde su inicio hasta octubre de 2022. Los estudios elegibles incluyeron estudios primarios que evaluaron la relación entre la inseguridad alimentaria y los atracones. La extracción de datos fue realizada de forma independiente por 2 revisores. Los odds ratios agrupados y los intervalos de confianza (IC) del 95% se obtuvieron de modelos de efectos aleatorios con el paquete R meta. Los análisis se estratificaron por comer en atracones versus trastorno por atracón (TpA), tipo de estudio (transversal vs longitudinal) y edad (adultos vs adolescentes). While various influencing factors of overweight and obesity have been identified, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We examined the relationships among sociodemographic, behavioral, and psychological factors on anthropometry in a multi-ethnic population with overweight and obesity. Participants (N = 251) were recruited from January to October 2022. Mean age and self-reported BMI were 31.7 ± 10.1 years and 29.2 ± 7.2 kg/m2. Participants were mostly female (52.4%) and overweight (58.2%). Multivariate multiple regression was performed using maximum likelihood estimation. Body mass index was associated with waist circumference, age, sex, race, marital status, education level, residential region, overeating habit, immediate thinking, self-regulation, and physical activity, but not anxiety, depression, or the intention to change eating habits. Final model indicated good fit: χ2 (30, N = 250) = 33.5, p = 0.32, CFI = 0.993, TLI = 0.988, RMSEA = 0.022, and SRMR = 0.041. Direct effects were found between BMI and overeating (ß = 0.10, p = 0.004), race (ß = -0.82, p < 0.001), marital status (ß = -0.42, p = 0.001), and education level (ß = -0.28, p = 0.019). Crisps (68.8%), cake (66.8%) and chocolate (65.6%) were identified as the most tempting foods. Immediate thinking indirectly increased overeating habits through poor self-regulation, although sociodemographic characteristics better predicted anthropometry than psycho-behavioral constructs.

BACKGROUND: Disordered eating is common but underrecognized in people with obesity and the relationship of food insecurity, mood, and binge-spectrum eating disorders has not been well addressed in samples with higher weight. Young adults are particularly vulnerable to developing disordered eating. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence of food insecurity, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and loneliness among young adults (aged 18-35 years) who screened positive for binge-spectrum eating disorders (i.e., binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa), those with subthreshold forms of these disorders, and individuals who did not screen positive for these conditions. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study of young adults with a self-reported body mass index ≥30 kg/m2 from the United States who were recruited online. Participants (N = 1,331; M ± SD age = 28.0 ± 3.4 years; body mass index [BMI] = 36.5 ± 6.2 kg/m2; 73.9% male; 56.3% White) completed surveys that evaluated disordered eating behaviors, food insecurity, mood, and lifestyle factors. RESULTS: In the sample, 8.0% of participants screened positive for binge-spectrum eating disorder and 16.0% had probable subthreshold symptoms. Higher depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR] = 1.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.03, 1.20], p = .01), perceived stress (OR = 1.13, 95% CI = [1.07, 1.19], p < .001), and food insecurity scores (OR = 1.12, 95% CI = [1.03, 1.21], p = .01) were associated with an increased likelihood of threshold binge-spectrum eating disorders. CONCLUSION: People with disordered eating should also be evaluated for mood disorders and food insecurity and vice versa. Further research is needed to evaluate interventions that address food insecurity and mood disorders, which may help to decrease disordered eating.
