RESUMEN

Sprinting plays a significant role in determining the results of road cycling races worldwide. However, currently, there is a lack of systematic research into the kinematics of sprint cycling, especially in an outdoor, environmentally valid setting. This study aimed to describe selected joint kinematics during a cycling sprint outdoors. Three participants were recorded sprinting over 60 meters in both standing and seated sprinting positions on an outdoor course with a baseline condition of seated cycling at 20 km/h. The participants were recorded using array-based inertial measurement units to collect joint excursions of the upper and lower limbs including the trunk. A high-rate GPS unit was used to record velocity during each recorded condition. Kinematic data were analyzed in a similar fashion to running gait, where multiple pedal strokes were identified, delineated, and averaged to form a representative (average ± SD) waveform. Participants maintained stable kinematics in most joints studied during the baseline condition, but variations in ranges of movement were recorded during seated and standing sprinting. Discernable patterns started to emerge for several kinematic profiles during standing sprinting. Alternate sprinting strategies emerged between participants and bilateral asymmetries were also recorded in the individuals tested. This approach to studying road cycling holds substantial potential for researchers wishing to explore this sport.

PURPOSE: Uncertainty exists if post-resistance exercise hydrotherapy attenuates chronic inflammatory and hormone responses. The effects of repeated post-resistance exercise water immersion on inflammatory and hormone responses in athletes were investigated. METHODS: Male, academy Super Rugby players (n = 18, 19.9 ± 1.5 y, 1.85 ± 0.06 m, 98.3 ± 10.7 kg) participated in a 12-week programme divided into 3 × 4-week blocks of post-resistance exercise water immersion (either, no immersion control [CON]; cold [CWI]; or hot [HWI] water immersion), utilising a randomised cross-over pre-post design. Fasted, morning blood measures were collected prior to commencement of first intervention block, and every fourth week thereafter. Linear mixed-effects models were used to analyse main (treatment, time) and interaction effects. RESULTS: Repeated CWI (p = 0.025, g = 0.05) and HWI (p < 0.001, g = 0.62) reduced creatine kinase (CK), compared to CON. HWI decreased (p = 0.013, g = 0.59) interleukin (IL)-1ra, compared to CON. HWI increased (p < 0.001-0.026, g = 0.06-0.17) growth factors (PDGF-BB, IGF-1), compared to CON and CWI. CWI increased (p = 0.004, g = 0.46) heat shock protein-72 (HSP-72), compared to HWI. CONCLUSION: Post-resistance exercise CWI or HWI resulted in trivial and moderate reductions in CK, respectively, which may be partly due to hydrostatic effects of water immersion. Post-resistance exercise HWI moderately decreased IL-1ra, which may be associated with post-resistance exercise skeletal muscle inflammation influencing chronic resistance exercise adaptive responses. Following post-resistance exercise water immersion, CWI increased HSP-72 suggesting a thermoregulatory response indicating improved adaptive inflammatory responses to temperature changes, while HWI increased growth factors (PDGF-BB, IGF-1) indicating different systematic signalling pathway activation. Our data supports the continued use of post-resistance exercise water immersion recovery strategies of any temperature during in-season competition phases for improved inflammatory adaptive responses in athletes.

This study aimed to determine the association between pre-competition perceived player wellbeing measures and subsequent relative and peak running performance of developmental youth female soccer players (n = 15, age: 16 ± 1 years). Total distance (TD), high-speed (> 3.5 m/s) (HSRD) and very high-speed (> 5.3 m/s) running (VHSRD) were expressed using 1-, 2- and 5-minute epochs and relative (per minute) calculations. Fatigue, sleep quality, upper and lower-body muscle soreness, stress, and mood wellbeing measures were collected via a self-reported questionnaire (1-5 Likert scale). Menstrual cycle phase was collected via a calendar-based countback method. Results demonstrated that reductions in stress was associated with decreased relative and peak TD in all epochs (p = 0.008-0.040), relative and peak HSRD (p = 0.006-0.039) in 2- and 5-minute epochs as well as VHSRD in 2-minute epochs (p = 0.026). For example, a one-point reduction of 'normal' to 'relaxed' is associated with a decrease of 7 m/min in peak TD for 1-minute epochs. One-point increase in fatigue (e.g., 'normal' to 'more tired than normal') displayed a decrease of 7 m/min peak TD for 2-minute (p = 0.048) and 9 m/min for 5-minute (p = 0.007) rolling epochs. Likewise, one-point increase in lower-body muscle-soreness (e.g., 'normal' to 'increase in soreness/tightness') was associated with a reduction of 6 m/min peak VHSRD for 1-minute epochs (p = 0.034). Results suggest that perceived player wellbeing can influence running performance. However, the magnitude of the change in player wellbeing should be considered in a practical sense.

Background: The repeat power ability (RPA) assessment is used to test the ability to repeatedly produce maximal ballistic efforts with an external load. The underpinning physical qualities influencing RPA are undetermined. This study aimed to gain further insight into the physical qualities that determine RPA by analysing the association between physical qualities and an assessment of RPA. Materials and methods: Ten well-trained male field hockey players performed an RPA assessment consisting of 20 repetitions of loaded countermovement jumps (LCMJ20), with a percent decrement score of peak power output calculated. Over a two-week period, each participant performed the YoYo Intermittent Recovery Test 2 (IRT2), a repeated speed ability assessment incorporating a 180° change of direction (RSA180), a 40-meter linear speed test (40 mST), an isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP), a countermovement jump (CMJ), and a 3-repetition maximum half squat (HS) assessment. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to determine the strength of relationships between each assessment variable and the LCMJ20. The assessment variables with the strongest relationships within each assessment were used in a stepwise multiple linear regression analysis to determine the best predictor model of LCMJ20. Results: RSA180percent decrement score (RSA180% had a very strong, significant relationship with LCMJ20 (r = 0.736: p < 0.05). HS relative strength (HSrel) was found to have a significant and very strong, negative relationship with LCMJ20 (r =  - 0.728: p < 0.05). Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis showed RSA180 to explain 48.4% of LCMJ20 variance (Adjusted R2 = 0.484) as the only covariate included in the model. Conclusion: The findings indicate that RSA180 as a repeated high intensity effort (RHIE) task is strongly related to LCMJ20 and is also the best predictor of LCMJ20. This may suggest that RPA can provide practitioners with information on RHIE performance. The variance between assessment methods indicates that RPA may be a distinct physical quality, future research should assess other physical capacities to better understand the factors contributing to RPA.

Background: Repeat power ability (RPA) assessments are a valuable evaluation of an athlete's ability to repeatedly perform high intensity movements. Establishing the most reliable and valid loaded jump RPA assessment and method to quantify RPA has yet to be determined. This study aimed to compare the reliability and validity of an RPA assessment performed with loaded squat jumps (SJ) or countermovement jumps (CMJ) using force-time derived mean and peak power output. Materials and Methods: RPA was quantified using calculations of average power output, a fatigue index and a percent decrement score for all repetitions and with the first and last repetitions removed. Validity was established by comparing to a 30 second Bosco repeated jump test (30BJT). Eleven well-trained male field hockey players performed one set of 20 repetitions of both SJs (20SJ) and CMJs (20CMJ) on separate occasions using a 30% one repetition maximum half squat load. These assessments were repeated 7 days apart to establish inter-test reliability. On a separate occasion, each participant performed the 30BJT. Results: The reliability of average peak power for 20SJ and 20CMJ was acceptable (CV < 5%; ICC > 0.9), while average mean power reliability for 20CMJ (CV < 5%; ICC > 0.9) was better than 20SJ (CV > 5%; ICC > 0.8). Percent decrement of 20CMJ peak power, with the first and final jump removed from the percent decrement calculation (PD%CMJpeak18), was the most reliable measurement of power output decline (CV < 5 %; ICC > 0.8). Average mean and peak power for both RPA protocols had moderate to strong correlations with 30BJT average mean and peak power (r = 0.5-0.8; p< 0.05-0.01). No RPA measurements of power decline were significantly related to BJT measurements of power decline. Conclusions: These findings indicate that PD%CMJpeak18 is the most reliable measure of RPA power decline. The lack of relationship between power decline in the loaded RPA and the 30BJT assessment suggest that each assessment may be measuring a different physical quality. These results provide sport science practitioners with additional methods to assess RPA and provide useful information on the reliability and validity of these outcome measures. Additional research needs to be performed to examine the reliability and validity of the novel RPA assessments in other athletic populations and to determine the sensitivity of these measurements to training and injury.

Acute performance, daily well-being and hormone responses to water immersion after resistance exercise in junior international and subelite male volleyball athletes. J Strength Cond Res 37(8): 1643-1653, 2023-Athletes use postexercise hydrotherapy strategies to improve recovery and competition performance and to enhance adaptative responses to training. Using a randomized cross-over design, the acute effects of 3 postresistance exercise water immersion strategies on perceived recovery, neuromuscular performance, and hormone concentrations in junior international and subelite male volleyball athletes ( n = 18) were investigated. After resistance exercise, subjects randomly completed either 15-minute passive control (CON), contrast water therapy (CWT), cold (CWI), or hot water immersion (HWI) interventions. A treatment effect occurred after HWI; reducing perceptions of fatigue (HWI > CWT: p = 0.05, g = 0.43); improved sleep quality, compared with CON ( p < 0.001, g = 1.15), CWI ( p = 0.017, g = 0.70), and CWT ( p = 0.018, g = 0.51); as well as increasing testosterone concentration (HWI > CWT: p = 0.038, g = 0.24). There were trivial to small ( p < 0.001-0.039, g = 0.02-0.34) improvements (treatment effect) in jump performance (i.e., squat jump and countermovement jump) after all water immersion strategies, as compared with CON, with high variability in the individual responses. There were no significant differences (interaction effect, p > 0.05) observed between the water immersion intervention strategies and CON in performance ( p = 0.153-0.99), hormone ( p = 0.207-0.938), nor perceptual ( p = 0.368-0.955) measures. To optimize recovery and performance responses, e.g., during an in-season competition phase, postresistance exercise HWI may assist with providing small-to-large improvements for up to 38 hours in perceived recovery (i.e., increased sleep quality and reduced fatigue) and increases in circulating testosterone concentration. Practitioners should consider individual athlete neuromuscular performance responses when prescribing postexercise hydrotherapy. These findings apply to athletes who aim to improve their recovery status, where postresistance exercise HWI optimizes sleep quality and next-day perceptions of fatigue.

PURPOSE: Following resistance exercise, uncertainty exists as to whether the regular application of cold water immersion attenuates lean muscle mass increases in athletes. The effects of repeated post-resistance exercise cold versus hot water immersion on body composition and neuromuscular jump performance responses in athletes were investigated. METHODS: Male, academy Super Rugby players (n = 18, 19.9 ± 1.5 y, 1.85 ± 0.06 m, 98.3 ± 10.7 kg) participated in a 12-week (4-week × 3-intervention, i.e., control [CON], cold [CWI] or hot [HWI] water immersion) resistance exercise programme, utilising a randomised cross-over pre-post-design. Body composition measures were collected using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry prior to commencement and every fourth week thereafter. Neuromuscular squat (SJ) and counter-movement jump (CMJ) performance were measured weekly. Linear mixed-effects models were used to analyse main (treatment, time) and interaction effects. RESULTS: There were no changes in lean (p = 0.960) nor fat mass (p = 0.801) between interventions. CON (p = 0.004) and CWI (p = 0.003) increased (g = 0.08-0.19) SJ height, compared to HWI. There were no changes in CMJ height (p = 0.482) between interventions. CONCLUSION: Repeated post-resistance exercise whole-body CWI or HWI does not attenuate (nor promote) increases in lean muscle mass in athletes. Post-resistance exercise CON or CWI results in trivial increases in SJ height, compared to HWI. During an in-season competition phase, our data support the continued use of post-resistance exercise whole-body CWI by athletes as a recovery strategy which does not attenuate body composition increases in lean muscle mass, while promoting trivial increases in neuromuscular concentric-only squat jump performance.

Relative metrics (i.e. distance covered per minute of match time) are regularly used to quantify soccer player movement demands. However, limited literature is available concerning the peak player demands during training. This study aimed to compare the relative and peak demands of conditioning-focused various-sided training games (VSG) to competition matches in elite youth male soccer players according to playing position. Data from twenty-nine competition matches (national) and twenty-two VSGs (small, medium, and large) were collected for twenty-three elite under-17 soccer players using 15-Hz portable global positioning system tracking devices (GPSports, Canberra, Australia). Relative player movements were reported as total distance (TD) and high-speed running distance (HSRD) (> 5.0 m/s) per minute of total playing time. Peak player movements were calculated using a 1-minute rolling epoch length, reported as the maximum TD and HSRD. Linear mixed models demonstrated interactions between VSG type and player position for relative TD (p < 0.001) and HSRD (p < 0.001), and peak TD (p = 0.010) and HSRD (p = 0.003). The relative TD of VSGs were greater than match-play for all player positions. However, only Central Defenders demonstrated similar HSRD in MSGs and LSGs compared to match-play when analysed using relative calculations. External Attackers also replicated match-play relative HSRD demands in LSGs. No VSG type was found to replicate or supersede the peak player movements of match-play across any playing position. Consequently, VSGs should be supplemented with high-speed running training to prepare players for the peak running requirements of match-play.

J Strength Cond Res 36(10): 2752-2761, 2022-This study aimed to reanalyze previously published discrete force data from countermovement jumps (CMJs) and squat jumps (SJs) using statistical parametric mapping (SPM), a statistical method that enables analysis of data in its native, complete state. Statistical parametric mapping analysis of 1-dimensional (1D) force-time curves was compared with previous zero-dimensional (0D) analysis of peak force to assess sensitivity of 1D analysis. Thirty-two subjects completed CMJs and SJs at baseline, 15 minutes, 1, 24, and 48 hours following fatigue and control conditions in a pseudo random cross-over design. Absolute (CMJ ABS /SJ ABS ) and time-normalized (CMJ NORM /SJ NORM ) force-time data were analyzed using SPM 2-way repeated measures analysis of variance with significance accepted at α = 0.05. The SPM indicated a magnitude of difference between force-time data with main effects for time ( p < 0.001) and interaction ( p < 0.001) observed in CMJ ABS , SJ ABS, and SJ NORM, whereas previously published 0D analysis reported no 2-way interaction in CMJ and SJ peak force. This exploratory research demonstrates the strength of SPM to identify changes between entire movement force-time curves. Continued development and use of SPM analysis techniques could present the opportunity for refined assessment of athlete fatigue and readiness with the analysis of complete force-time curves.

ABSTRACT: Everett, KLA, Chapman, DW, Mitchell, JA, and Ball, N. Changes in loaded countermovement jumps during precompetition and competition training mesocycles in elite rowers. J Strength Cond Res 36(9): 2622-2627, 2022-To assess changes in velocity, displacement, and power as an indicator of neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) within and between precompetition and competition mesocycles in elite male rowers using loaded countermovement jumps (CMJs). Twenty highly trained rowers completed regular training (on-water rowing, rowing ergometer, and resistance training sessions) in 2 consecutive mesocycles. Athletes completed a single set of 6 loaded (20 kg) CMJs in the first and final week of each mesocycle. Countermovement jumps were assessed for jump height (JH), eccentric displacement, mean velocity (MV), eccentric MV (EMV), and mean power. Changes between time points were reported as Cohen's d effect sizes (95% confidence interval [CI]). The magnitude of the differences was also considered based on their relative strength levels using a linear mixed model. Within the precompetition mesocycle, trivial-to-small reductions for all variables (0.5-4.1%) were observed. During the competition mesocycle, trivial-to-small increases were shown for EMV (1.4%) and eccentric displacement (2.0%) with no change in JH and small reductions in MV (0.5%) and mean power (2.8%). No differences between the precompetition and competition mesocycles were shown. Only mean power showed a significant reduction in weaker athletes (3.2%) compared with stronger athletes (2.3%). Training completed during a precompetition and competitive mesocycle did not result in significant decreases in athlete's loaded CMJ performance, indicating that NMF was minimized. Alternatively, use of a loaded CMJ may not be sensitive enough to observe NMF in elite rowers during the mesocycle immediately leading into and during a competition mesocycle.

ABSTRACT: Everett, KLA, Chapman, DW, Mitchell, JA, and Ball, N. Effects of westbound trans-meridian travel on countermovement jump performance in international-level rowers. J Strength Cond Res 36(7): 1961-1965, 2022-International long-haul air travel is a necessity for many athletes as part of their training or competition schedules. However, long-haul travel is also associated with impaired neuromuscular function. An athlete's lower body neuromuscular status is frequently assessed and monitored using countermovement jump (CMJ). This study assessed the impact of westbound trans-meridian travel on changes in CMJ performance in highly trained aerobic athletes. Highly trained male rowers (n = 21, 23.7 ± 1.4 years, 1.91 ± 0.07 m, 86.9 ± 9.9 kg) undertook a westbound flight incurring 22 hours of flight time with 30 hours of total travel time across 9 time zones. Athletes completed a single set of 6 loaded CMJ repetitions before and after travel with performance measured using a digital optical encoder attached to a 20 kg barbell. Each CMJ repetition was assessed for mean concentric velocity, jump height (JH), eccentric displacement, JH:dip ratio, mean power, and mean eccentric velocity, with comparisons made between mean set changes before and after travel. Changes were compared using a one tail paired t-test and characterized using Cohen's d (95% confidence interval) effect sizes. Significance was accepted at p ≤ 0.05. Small-to-moderate changes were observed in all variables following westbound travel. These changes may be because of retention of high training loads before travel resulting in the athletes being in a fatigued state, whereas travel time worked as a forced recovery period. Reductions in CMJ performance are likely following westbound travel, however, may be affected by training fatigue before travel that may confound CMJ performance as a monitoring metric.

This investigation sought to quantify the level of measurement agreement in system force, velocity and power values derived across three commonly applied assessment techniques during a countermovement jump (CMJ). Twenty-five male national representative athletes completed three CMJs under unloaded (0%1RM) and loaded (40%1RM) jump conditions. Associated values of force, velocity and power were captured simultaneously from either a linear optical encoder (LOE) or force plate (FP) and then compared to the gold-standard reference values derived from a combined force plate and three-dimensional motion capture system (FPMC). The LOE significantly (p < 0.001) overestimated and failed to meet the minimum level of relatedness (<0.80) for measures of peak velocity, peak force, peak power and mean power across both conditions compared to the FPMC reference values. A reduction in measurement dispersion and bias was, however, evident during the loaded condition. The FP significantly (p < 0.05) underestimated mean and peak power across both conditions, yet measurement bias and dispersion remained consistent. These findings highlight a disparity in measurement agreement in force, velocity and power values across alternative assessment techniques and loads. Such variance in measurement agreement will uniquely alter derived force-velocity profiles, and thus the prescription of training loads to maximise system power during unrestricted CMJs.

J Strength Cond Res 36(12): 3473-3484, 2022-Athletes use water immersion strategies to recover from training and competition. This study investigated the acute effects of postexercise water immersion after resistance exercise. Eighteen elite and subelite male volleyball athletes participated in an intervention using a randomized cross-over design. On separate occasions after resistance exercise, subjects completed 1 of 4 15-minute interventions: control (CON), cold water immersion (CWI), contrast water therapy (CWT), or hot water immersion (HWI). Significance was accepted at p ≤ 0.05. Resistance exercise induced significant temporal changes (time effect) for inflammatory, anthropometric, perceptual, and performance measures. Serum creatine kinase was reduced ( g = 0.02-0.30) after CWI ( p = 0.007), CWT ( p = 0.006), or HWI ( p < 0.001) vs. CON, whereas it increased significantly ( g = 0.50) after CWI vs. HWI. Contrast water therapy resulted in significantly higher ( g = 0.56) interleukin-6 concentrations vs. HWI. Thigh girth increased ( g = 0.06-0.16) after CWI vs. CON ( p = 0.013) and HWI ( p < 0.001) and between CWT vs. HWI ( p = 0.050). Similarly, calf girth increased ( g = 0.01-0.12) after CWI vs. CON ( p = 0.039) and CWT ( p = 0.018), and HWI vs. CON ( p = 0.041) and CWT ( p = 0.018). Subject belief in a postexercise intervention strategy was associated with HSP72 ("believer">"nonbeliever," p = 0.026), muscle soreness ("believer">"nonbeliever," p = 0.002), and interleukin-4 ("nonbeliever">"believer," p = 0.002). There were no significant treatment × time (interaction effect) pairwise comparisons. Choice of postexercise water immersion strategy (i.e., cold, contrast, or hot) combined with a belief in the efficacy of that strategy to enhance recovery or performance improves biological and perceptual markers of muscle damage and soreness. On same or subsequent days where resistance exercise bouts are performed, practitioners should consider athlete beliefs when prescribing postexercise water immersion, to reduce muscle soreness.

Sport science and medicine practitioners are interested in the relationships between training load, injury, and illness. The extent to which training preparedness is associated with workload-related injury and illness risk is debated. Therefore, this study applied multi-level mixed effect logistic regression to investigate time-dependent (±7- and ±28-day) relationships between training preparedness (fatigue, mood, motivation, soreness, stress, sleep duration, and quality), training load, injury, and illness in 536 elite and pre-elite female netball athletes. Absolute risk (AR ± 95% CI) of sustaining an injury (0.98 ± 0.06%, n = 1122 injuries, N = 254 athletes) or illness (1.09 ± 0.10%, n = 2881, N = 432 athletes) was calculated. All training preparedness variables combined resulted in an absolute risk of 0.88%-5.88% and 0.87%-20% for injury and illness, respectively. Injury and illness had significant (P < .05) bidirectional (ie, both increased and decreased) associations with physical (soreness) and physiological (sleep duration and quality), while illness also had negative (mood, motivation) and positive (stress) associations with psychological training preparedness variables. Low sleep duration in the 48-h period prior was associated (P = .005) with increased injury risk (OR = 0.91 ± 0.03; AR = 4.00%), while "very poor" sleep quality (OR = 0.59 ± 0.02; AR = 7.83%) or extremes of too little (<5 hours, OR = 1.01 ± 0.03; AR = 3.13%-14.29%) and too much (>10 hours, OR = 1.01 ± 0.03; AR = 2.61%-10.98%) sleep had bidirectional associations (P < .001) with an increased illness risk. Changes in training preparedness variables demonstrated bidirectional associations with injury and illness. These outcomes suggest that sport science and medicine practitioners should monitor sleep, physical, and psychological recovery status, to aid early detection and intervention regarding injury and illness symptomology.

The purpose of this study was to relate the shape of countermovement jump (CMJ) vertical ground reaction force waveforms to discrete parameters and determine if waveform shape could enhance CMJ analysis. Vertical ground reaction forces during CMJs were collected for 394 male and female collegiate athletes competing at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) levels. Jump parameters were calculated for each athlete and principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on normalized force-time waveforms consisting of the eccentric braking and concentric phases. A K-means clustering of PCA scores placed athletes into three groups based on their waveform shape. The overall average waveforms of all athletes in each cluster produced three distinct vertical ground reaction force waveform patterns. There were significant differences across clusters for all calculated jump parameters. Athletes with a rounded single hump shape jumped highest and quickest. Athletes with a plateau at the transition between the eccentric braking and concentric phase (amortization) followed by a peak in force near the end of the concentric phase had the lowest jump height and slowest jump time. Analysis of force-time waveform shape can identify differences in CMJ strategies in collegiate athletes.

BACKGROUND: Despite a substantial body of research, no clear best practice guidelines exist for the assessment of hydration in athletes. Body water is stored in and shifted between different sites throughout the body complicating hydration assessment. This review seeks to highlight the unique strengths and limitations of various hydration assessment methods described in the literature as well as providing best practice guidelines. MAIN BODY: There is a plethora of methods that range in validity and reliability, including complicated and invasive methods (i.e. neutron activation analysis and stable isotope dilution), to moderately invasive blood, urine and salivary variables, progressing to non-invasive metrics such as tear osmolality, body mass, bioimpedance analysis, and sensation of thirst. Any single assessment of hydration status is problematic. Instead, the recommended approach is to use a combination, which have complementary strengths, which increase accuracy and validity. If methods such as salivary variables, urine colour, vital signs and sensation of thirst are utilised in isolation, great care must be taken due to their lack of sensitivity, reliability and/or accuracy. Detailed assessments such as neutron activation and stable isotope dilution analysis are highly accurate but expensive, with significant time delays due to data analysis providing little potential for immediate action. While alternative variables such as hormonal and electrolyte concentration, bioimpedance and tear osmolality require further research to determine their validity and reliability before inclusion into any test battery. CONCLUSION: To improve best practice additional comprehensive research is required to further the scientific understanding of evaluating hydration status.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the practicality of using functional principal components analysis (fPCA) and intra-athlete z-score changes for individual athlete monitoring post-ACL injury and surgery. DESIGN: A single athlete case study using within-athlete repeated measures in the context of applied athlete monitoring. METHODS: Using single leg (left) drop landing (3 landings per session) onto a force plate, the athlete completed 6 sessions prior (healthy) and 3 sessions post-ACL injury/surgery. Maximum vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), time to stabilisation (TTS) and outputs from fPCA (fPC scores) for the healthy sessions were used to develop intra-athlete means and standard deviations for each variable. Post-surgery measures were given z-scores relative to the healthy mean and standard deviation for each variable. The standard normal deviate (z = 1.96) was used as a threshold to flag landings that could be indicative of changes in movement behaviour. RESULTS: Maximum vGRF revealed no post-surgery trials that exceeded the standard normal deviate threshold based on the healthy data. TTS identified one landing post-surgery that exceeded the threshold. Scores for fPC2, fPC3 and fPC4 revealed landings that exceeded the threshold, with fPC4 demonstrating landings greater than the threshold for every trial (except two) post-surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Including fPCA identified significant and stable changes to the landing strategy (particularly within fPC4). When used in conjunction with other measures such as maximum vGRF and TTS, fPCA has the potential to provide meaningful insights into athlete monitoring models regarding changes to movement characteristics after injury.

PURPOSE: To examine the influence of fluid intake on heat acclimation and the subsequent effects on exercise performance following acute hypohydration. METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups, either able to consume water ad libitum (n = 10; age 23 [3] y, height 1.81 [0.09] m, body mass 87 [13] kg; HAW) or not allowed fluid (n = 10; age 26 [5] y, height 1.76 [0.05] m, body mass 79 [10] kg; HANW) throughout 12 × 1.5-h passive heat-acclimation sessions. Experimental trials were completed on 2 occasions before (2 baseline trials) and 1 following the heat-acclimation sessions. These sessions involved 3 h of passive heating (45°C, 38% relative humidity) to induce hypohydration followed by 3 h of ad libitum food and fluid intake after which participants performed a repeat sled-push test to assess physical performance. Urine and blood samples were collected before, immediately, and 3 h following hypohydration to assess hydration status. Mood was also assessed at the same time points. RESULTS: No meaningful differences in physiological or performance variables were observed between HANW and HAW at any time point. Using pooled data, mean sprint speed was significantly (P < .001) faster following heat acclimation (4.6 [0.7] s compared with 5.1 [0.8] s). Furthermore, heat acclimation appeared to improve mood following hypohydration. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that passive heat-acclimation protocols may be effective at improving short-duration repeat-effort performance following acute hypohydration.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationship between the ground reaction force-time profile of a countermovement jump (CMJ) and fatigue, specifically focusing on predicting the onset of neuromuscular versus metabolic fatigue using the CMJ. METHOD: Ten recreational athletes performed 5 CMJs at time points prior to, immediately following, and at 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 24 and 48 h after training, which comprised repeated sprint sessions of low, moderate, or high workloads. Features of the concentric portion of the CMJ force-time signature at the measurement time points were analysed using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and functional PCA (fPCA) to better understand fatigue onset given training workload. In addition, Linear Mixed Effects (LME) models were developed to predict the onset of fatigue. RESULTS: The first two Principal Components (PCs) using PCA explained 68% of the variation in CMJ features, capturing variation between athletes through weighted combinations of force, concentric time and power. The next two PCs explained 9.9% of the variation and revealed fatigue effects between 6 to 48 h after training for PC3, and contrasting neuromuscular and metabolic fatigue effects in PC4. fPCA supported these findings and further revealed contrasts between metabolic and neuromuscular fatigue effects in the first and second half of the force-time curve in PC3, and a double peak effect in PC4. Subsequently, CMJ measurements up to 0.5 h after training were used to predict relative peak CMJ force, with mean squared errors of 0.013 and 0.015 at 6 and 48 h corresponding to metabolic and neuromuscular fatigue. CONCLUSION: The CMJ was found to provide a strong predictor of neuromuscular and metabolic fatigue, after accounting for force, concentric time and power. This method can be used to assist coaches to individualise future training based on CMJ response to the immediate session.

In combat sports, athletes are divided into categories based on gender and body mass. Athletes attempt to compete against a lighter opponent by losing body mass prior to being weighed (i.e., 'weight-cutting'). The purpose of this narrative review was to explore the current body of literature on weight-cutting and outline gaps for further research. Methods of weight-loss include energy intake restriction, total body fluid reduction and pseudo extreme/abusive medical practice (e.g., diuretics). The influence of weight-cutting on performance is unclear, with studies suggesting a negative or no effect. However, larger weight-cuts (~5% of body mass in <24 h) do impair repeat-effort performance. It is unclear if the benefit from competing against a smaller opponent outweighs the observed reduction in physical capacity. Many mechanisms have been proposed for the observed reductions in performance, ranging from reduced glycogen availability to increased perceptions of fatigue. Athletes undertaking weight-cutting may be able to utilise strategies around glycogen, total body water and electrolyte replenishment to prepare for competition. Despite substantial discussion on managing weight-cutting in combat sports, no clear solution has been offered. Given the prevalence of weight-cutting, it is important to develop a deeper understanding of such practices so appropriate advice can be given.
