RESUMEN

The fermentation process for Jiang-flavored baijiu using sorghum as the raw material involves a variety of microorganisms. However, the specific physicochemical characteristics of sorghum and microbial composition on its surface have not been fully elucidated. We aimed to perform a comprehensive comparative analysis of the variations in physicochemical properties and surface microflora in waxy sorghum samples from three prominent production regions in China (Renhuai, Jinsha, and Duyun). Multivariate statistical assessments were conducted that incorporated local soil and climate variables. The results showed that Cyanobacteria, unclassified bacteria, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidota were the dominant bacteria in these regions. These bacteria were associated with ethyl acetate, ethyl caprylate, ethyl lactate, and butyl groups, which synergistically produce flavorful compounds. The surface bacterial communities were affected by soil total phosphorus, altitude, diurnal temperature range, monthly mean temperature, precipitation, and effective accumulated temperature. The findings of this study provide a new perspective on microorganisms related to Jiang-flavored baijiu and can help establish a reference for the stability of liquor quality.

RESUMEN

Irreversible interfacial reactions at the anodes pose a significant challenge to the long-term stability and lifespan of zinc (Zn) metal batteries, impeding their practical application as energy storage devices. The plating and stripping behavior of Zn ions on polycrystalline surfaces is inherently influenced by the microscopic structure of Zn anodes, a comprehensive understanding of which is crucial but often overlooked. Herein, commercial Zn foils were remodeled through the incorporation of cerium (Ce) elements via the 'pinning effect' during the electrodeposition process. By leveraging the electron-donating effect of Ce atoms segregated at grain boundaries (GBs), the electronic configuration of Zn is restructured to increase active sites for Zn nucleation. This facilitates continuous nucleation throughout the growth stage, leading to a high-rate instantaneous-progressive composite nucleation model that achieves a spatially uniform distribution of Zn nuclei and induces spontaneous grain refinement. Moreover, the incorporation of Ce elements elevates the site energy of GBs, mitigating detrimental parasitic reactions by enhancing the GB stability. Consequently, the remodeled ZnCe electrode exhibits highly reversible Zn plating/stripping with an accumulated capacity of up to 4.0 Ah cm-2 in a Zn symmetric cell over 4000 h without short-circuit behavior. Notably, a ∼0.4 Ah Zn||NH4V4O10 pouch cell runs over 110 cycles with 83% capacity retention with the high-areal-loading cathode (≈20 mg cm-2). This refining-grains strategy offers new insights into designing dendrite-free metal anodes in rechargeable batteries.

RESUMEN

The molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying left atrial (LA) enlargement and atrial fibrosis following right ventricular (RV) dependent pacing remain unclear. Our objective was to investigate genetic expressions in the LA of pigs subjected to RV pacing for atrioventricular block (AVB), as well as to identify the differential gene expressions affected by biventricular (BiV) pacing. We established an AVB pig model and divided the subjects into three groups: a sham control group, an RV pacing group, and a BiV pacing group. Differential expression genes (DEGs) analyses conducted through next-generation sequencing (NGS) and enrichment analyses were employed to identify genes with altered expression in the LA myocardium. The RV pacing group showed a significant increase in extracellular fibrosis in the LA myocardium compared to the control group. NGS analysis revealed suppressed expression of the sirtuin signaling pathway in the RV pacing group. Among the DEGs within this pathway, GADD45G was found to be downregulated in the RV pacing group and upregulated in the BiV pacing group. Remarkably, the BiV pacing group exhibited elevated levels of GADD45G protein. In our study, we observed significant downregulation of SIRT1 and GADD45G genes, which are associated with the sirtuin signaling pathway, in the LA myocardium of the RV pacing group when compared to the control group. Moreover, these genes, which were downregulated in the RV pacing group, displayed a noteworthy upregulation in the BiV pacing group when compared to the RV pacing group.

RESUMEN

The detrimental parasitic reactions and uncontrolled deposition behavior derived from inherently unstable interface have largely impeded the practical application of aqueous zinc batteries. So far, tremendous efforts have been devoted to tailoring interfaces, while stabilization of grain boundaries has received less attention. Here, we demonstrate that preferential distribution of intermetallic compounds at grain boundaries via an alloying strategy can substantially suppress intergranular corrosion. In-depth morphology analysis reveals their thermodynamic stability, ensuring sustainable potency. Furthermore, the hybrid nucleation and growth mode resulting from reduced Gibbs free energy contributes to the spatially uniform distribution of Zn nuclei, promoting the dense Zn deposition. These integrated merits enable a high Zn reversibility of 99.85% for over 4000 cycles, steady charge-discharge at 10 mA cm-2, and impressive cyclability for roughly 3500 cycles in Zn-Ti//NH4V4O10 full cell. Notably, the multi-layer pouch cell of 34 mAh maintains stable cycling for 500 cycles. This work highlights a fundamental understanding of microstructure and motivates the precise tuning of grain boundary characteristics to achieve highly reversible Zn anodes.

RESUMEN

Mutations in the gene ankyrin repeat domain containing 11 (ANKRD11/ANCO1) play a role in neurodegenerative disorders, and its loss of heterozygosity and low expression are seen in some cancers. Here, we show that low ANCO1 mRNA and protein expression levels are prognostic markers for poor clinical outcomes in breast cancer and that loss of nuclear ANCO1 protein expression predicts lower overall survival of patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Knockdown of ANCO1 in early-stage TNBC cells led to aneuploidy, cellular senescence, and enhanced invasion in a 3D matrix. The presence of a subpopulation of ANCO1-depleted cells enabled invasion of the overall cell population in vitro and they converted more rapidly to invasive lesions in a xenograft mouse model. In ANCO1-depleted cells, ChIP-seq analysis showed a global increase in H3K27Ac signals that were enriched for AP-1, TEAD, STAT3, and NFκB motifs. ANCO1-regulated H3K27Ac peaks had a significantly higher overlap with known breast cancer enhancers compared to ANCO1-independent ones. H3K27Ac engagement was associated with transcriptional activation of genes in the PI3K-AKT, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and senescence pathways. In conclusion, ANCO1 has hallmarks of a tumor suppressor whose loss of expression activates breast-cancer-specific enhancers and oncogenic pathways that can accelerate the early-stage progression of breast cancer.
