RESUMEN

Older spousal caregivers bear the dual burden of managing health changes and caring for their partners. This study aimed to investigate the association between spousal caregiving and frailty in older adults. A retrospective cohort study with a 4-year follow-up was conducted using seven waves of data from the Health and Retirement Study (2006-2018). The mean age of participants was 65.1 years. A significant correlation was found between spousal caregiving and frailty increase. Multilevel analysis demonstrated a significant difference in the changes in frailty index over 12 years between caregivers and non-caregivers. This study uncovered a significant association between spousal caregiving and frailty in older adults, suggesting that becoming a spousal caregiver is not only linked to higher levels of frailty but also accelerates its progression. Healthcare providers can tailor support services to assist caregivers in managing challenges and promoting healthy aging.

The study aimed to develop a synthetic microbial community capable of managing postharvest black spot disease in winter jujube. The research revealed that treatment with Debaryomyces nepalensis altered the surface microbial community, reducing the presence of harmful fungi such as Alternaria, Penicillium, Fusarium, and Botrytis, while boosting beneficial bacteria like Pantoea, Bacillus, Staphylococcus, and Pseudomonas, leading to a decreased decay rate in date fruits. A synthetic community was crafted, integrating D. nepalensis with seven other bacterial strains selected for their abundance, compatibility, culturability, and interactions. This community was refined through homo-pore damage experiments and safety assessments to a final formulation consisting of D. nepalensis and six other bacteria: Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis, Staphylococcus arlettae, Staphylococcus gallinarum, Pseudomonas sp., and Pseudomonas psychrotolerans. Fruit inoculation tests demonstrated that this synthetic community (6 + 1) significantly lowered the incidence and size of black spot lesions compared to single-strain treatments. By the 10th day of storage, the incidence was 69.23 % lower than the control and 52.94 % lower than the group treated solely with D. nepalensis. Mechanistic studies of the synthetic community's antibacterial effects showed that it can produce volatile compounds, proteases, and ß-1,3-glucanase to inhibit pathogen growth. Additionally, the community forms a biofilm to compete for nutrients and induce jujube resistance to disease.

Irisin is considered to be a promising therapeutic approach for cardiac depression and inflammatory disorders. The short half-life of irisin impeded its use and drug efficacy in the treatment. This study aimed to examine if pegylated gold nanoparticles-conjugated to irisin would improve therapeutic effects in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis in mice. Recombinant irisin were conjugated to a pegylated gold nanoparticle, which was given to mice exposed to CLP. The cecal ligation procedure and sham on mice were operated and assigned to one of following five groups: (I) CLP group: The mouse models underwent the CLP surgical procedure and received only vehicle saline treatment (n = 5); (II) CLP + soluble Irisin: The mouse underwent the CLP and received an intramuscular injection (i.m) (TA) injection of 1 ug of soluble irisin into each tibialis anterior (TA) leg (n = 5); (III) CLP + Gold nanoparticle-conjugated to Irisin: The mouse models underwent the CLP and received an i.m (TA) injection of 1 µg of Gold nanoparticle-irisin via intramuscular injection (TA) into each leg (n = 5); (IV) CLP + Gold nanoparticles- conjugated to IgG: The mouse underwent the CLP and received an i.m (TA) injection of gold nanoparticles conjugated to IgG (n = 5). (V) Sham: The mouse underwent the surgical operation without conducting the CLP (n = 10). The post-operated animals were observed for one week, and survival rates were estimated. Echocardiography was performed to measure cardiac function at 12 h following CLP. TUNEL was employed to detect apoptosis in both cardiac and skeletal muscles; histology was conducted to assess tissue injury in muscles. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was conducted to examine release of interleukin 6 (IL6) and the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha. Compared to the CLP control, soluble irisin treatment improved cardiac function recovery, as indicated by the fractional shortening (FS) and ejection fraction (EF). Irisin treatment exhibited reduced IL6 and TNF-alpha release in association with less apoptosis, lower muscle injury index and improved survival post-CLP. However, compared to soluble irisin treatment, gold nanoparticles-conjugated to irisin showed a significant improvement in cardiac function, suppression of apoptosis, reduced IL6 and TNF-alpha releases, decreased muscle injury and an improved survival rate of post-CLP. This study reveals that gold nanoparticles-conjugated irisin can serve to improve irisin's therapeutic effects over a longer course of treatment.

This study investigated the relationship between A body shape index (ABSI) and bone mineral density (BMD) in older Americans and found a negative linear association, which was particularly pronounced in diabetic population. An early focus on ABSI in the elderly population will help in the prevention of osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE: A body shape index (ABSI) is an abdominal obesity index developed based on epidemiological statistics and high ABSI indicates that waist circumference (WC) is higher than expected for a given height and weight and corresponds to a more central concentration of body volume. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a linear or nonlinear relationship between ABSI and total femur bone mineral density (BMD) in older Americans and whether the relationship between the ABSI and total femur BMD varies across populations. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was based on data from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Weighted multiple linear regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves, subgroup analysis, and interaction tests were used to examine the association between ABSI and total femur BMD. RESULTS: This study included 2505 older adults. This study found a negative linear correlation between ABSI and total femur BMD (ß = -3.2, 95%CI: -5.0, -1.4, p < 0.001). When participants were grouped according to quartiles of ABSI, those in the upper quartile had lower total femur BMD compared to those in the bottom quartile of ABSI. This negative association remained consistent across gender, age, education level, smoking, physical activity and BMI subgroups. However, in the diabetes subgroup, ABSI showed a stronger negative association with total femur BMD. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows a negative linear association between ABSI and total femur BMD in older Americans, with this negative association being stronger in the diabetic population.

INTRODUCTION: Insulin resistance (IR) is associated with multiple pathological features. Although p53- or TRIB3-orchestrated IR is extensively studied in adipose tissue and liver, the role of p53-TRIB3 axis in myocardial IR remains unknown, and more importantly target-directed therapies of myocardial IR are missing. OBJECTIVES: Considering the beneficial effects of sulforaphane (SFN) on cardiovascular health, it is of particular interest to explore whether SFN protects against myocardial IR with a focus on the regulatory role of p53-TRIB3 axis. METHODS: Mouse models including cardiac specific p53-overexpressing transgenic (p53-cTg) mice and Trib3 knockout (Trib3-KO) mice, combined with primary cardiomyocytes treated with p53 activator (nutlin-3a) and inhibitor (pifithrin-α, PFT-α), or transfected with p53-shRNA and Trib3-shRNA, followed by multiple molecular biological methodologies, were used to investigate the role of p53-TRIB3 axis in SFN actions on myocardial IR. RESULTS: Here, we report that knockdown of p53 rescued cardiac insulin-stimulated AKT phosphorylation, while up-regulation of p53 by nutlin-3a or p53-cTg mice blunted insulin sensitivity in cardiomyocytes under diabetic conditions. Diabetic attenuation of AKT-mediated cardiac insulin signaling was markedly reversed by SFN in p53-Tgfl/fl mice, but not in p53-cTg mice. Importantly, we identified TRIB3 was elevated in p53-cTg diabetic mice, and confirmed the physical interaction between p53 and TRIB3. Trib3-KO diabetic mice displayed improved insulin sensitivity in the heart. More specifically, the AMPKα-triggered CHOP phosphorylation and degradation were essential for p53 on the transcriptional regulation of Trib3. CONCLUSION: Overall, these results indicate that inhibiting the p53-TRIB3 pathway by SFN plays an unsuspected key role in the improvement of myocardial IR, which may be a promising strategy for attenuating diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) in diabetic patients.

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have emerged as promising technologies for diverse applications such as optical communication, biomedical imaging, surveillance, and machine vision. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are particularly attractive for SWIR LEDs due to their solution processability, compatibility with flexible substrates, and tunable absorption and luminescence. However, the presence of toxic elements or precious metals in most SWIR-emitting QDs poses health, environmental, and cost challenges. In this context, CuInS2 (CIS) QDs are known for low toxicity, cost-effective fabrication, and SWIR-light emitting capability. However, CIS QDs have not yet been directly utilized to fabricate SWIR LEDs to date, which is due to low particle stability, inefficient charge carrier recombination, and significantly blue-shifted luminescence after integrating into LED devices. To address challenges, we propose a dual-passivation strategy using ZnI2 as a chemical additive to enhance both the optical property of plain CIS QDs and charge carrier recombination upon LED device implementation. The resulting CIS-QD-based LEDs exhibit a stable SWIR electroluminescence (EL) peak (over 1000 nm) with a high EL radiance and a record external quantum efficiency in the SWIR region. Our study represents a significant step forward in SWIR-QLED technology, offering a pathway for the development of high-performance, low-cost, and nontoxic SWIR light sources.

OBJECTIVES: The weight-adjusted waist circumference index (WWI), a novel obesity indicator, gives better accuracy in assessing both muscle and fat mass. Our goal was to evaluate the relationship between WWI and the occurrence of hyperuricemia/gout among middle-aged and older adults in America. METHODS: We analyzed the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from the 2007-2014 cycles. Logistic regression analyses, subgroup analyses, and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were performed to evaluate the association between WWI and hyperuricemia/gout prevalence. RESULTS: A total of 5332 adults aged 50 years and above were included in this study. The prevalence of hyperuricemia and gout was 23.20% and 6.70% respectively. The fourth quartile of WWI was associated with a 56% higher risk for hyperuricemia, compared with the first quartile (OR = 1.56, 95% CI 1.07-2.27, P trend < 0.001). A similar association was found between continuous WWI increase and OR of hyperuricemia in the fully adjusted model (OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.13-1.61, P < 0.05). However, WWI was not significantly associated with the prevalence of gout. The RCS model suggested a significant linear relationship between WWI and the risk of hyperuricemia/gout. Stratification analysis showed that the positive associations of WWI with the risk of hyperuricemia were more pronounced in participants who were women, aged 50-59, smokers, no physical activity, non-diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a positive correlation between WWI and hyperuricemia among middle-aged and older adults in America. Employing WWI as a tool for hyperuricemia prevention may be meaningful. The cluster-based body-centered-cubic superlattice (cBCC SL) represents one of the most complicated structures among reported nanocrystal assemblies, comprised of 72 truncated tetrahedral quantum dots per unit cell. Our previous report revealed that truncated tetrahedral quantum dots within cBCC SLs possessed highly controlled translational and orientational order owing to an unusual energetic landscape based on the balancing of entropic and enthalpic contributions during the assembly process. However, the cBCC SL's structural transformability and mechanical properties, uniquely originating from such complicated nanostructures, have yet to be investigated. Herein, we report that cBCC SLs can undergo dynamic transformation to face-centered-cubic SLs in response to post-assembly molecular exposure. We monitored the dynamic transformation process using in situ synchrotron-based small-angle X-ray scattering, revealing a dynamic transformation involving multiple steps underpinned by interactions between incoming molecules and TTQDs' surface ligands. Furthermore, our mechanistic study demonstrated that the precise configuration of TTQDs' ligand molecules in cBCC SLs was key to their high structural transformability and unique jelly-like soft mechanical properties. While ligand molecular configurations in nanocrystal SLs are often considered minor features, our findings emphasize their significance in controlling weak van der Waals interactions between nanocrystals within assembled SLs, leading to previously unremarked superstructural transformability and unique mechanical properties. Our findings promote a facile route toward further creation of soft materials, nanorobotics, and out-of-equilibrium assemblies based on nanocrystal building blocks.

CuInS2 (CIS) quantum dots (QDs) represent an important class of colloidal materials with broad application potential, owing to their low toxicity and unique optical properties. Although coating with a ZnS shell has been identified as a crucial method to enhance optical performance, the occurrence of cation exchange has historically resulted in the unintended formation of Cu-In-Zn-S alloyed QDs, causing detrimental blueshifts in both absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectral profiles. In this study, we present a facile one-pot synthetic strategy aimed at impeding the cation exchange process and promoting ZnS shell growth on CIS core QDs. The suppression of both electron-phonon interaction and Auger recombination by the rigid ZnS shell results in CIS/ZnS core/shell QDs that exhibit a wide near-infrared (NIR) emission coverage and a remarkable PL quantum yield of 92.1%. This effect boosts the fabrication of high-performance, QD-based NIR light-emitting diodes with the best stability of such materials so far.

BACKGROUND: Parenting is both a complex and stressful endeavor, so parents sometimes experience parenting burnout. The main objective of this study was to provide an overview of factors related to general parental burnout (PB) among parents with at least one child based on the Ecological Systems Theory (EST). METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, CNKI and WanFang were systematically searched for studies published from 2010 to July 2023 for peer-reviewed articles using keywords extracted from Medical Subject Headings such as "parenting", "parental", "burnout", "psychological burnout", "burn-out syndrome". Studies were included if they described associations between factors and PB among parents of children aged 0-18 years old in the general population, and published in an English or Chinese language peer-reviewed journal. The Quality Assessment Tool for Studies with Diverse Designs (QATSDD) was employed to assess the risk of bias of included studies. RESULTS: Of 2037 articles, 26 articles met the inclusion criteria. Based on the Ecological Systems Theory (EST), we found that microsystem-individual factors such as gender, educational level, income, parental personality, internalization of maternal parental motivation, unmitigated communion, self-compassion and concern for others, alexithymia, anxiety and depressive symptoms, parental perfectionism, resilience, low self-esteem and high need for control, mother's attachment style were identified as being associated with parenting burnout. Mesosystem-interpersonal factors involve parent-child relationship and marital satisfaction. The exosystem-organizational or community factors include the number of children in the household, neighborhood and the number of hours spent with children, child's illness, child's behavior problems and social support. The macrosystem-society/policy or culture factors are mainly personal values and cultural values. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review found several factors that have been investigated in relation to PB. However, the majority of the factors were reported by one or two studies often implementing a cross-sectional design. Nevertheless, we still recommend that health policymakers and administrators relieve parenting burnout among parents with children by adjusting these modifiable factors.

INTRODUCTION: The knowledge of barriers from the parental perspective is essential for facilitating shared decision-making in the field of pediatric asthma. METHOD: Participants who were parents of children with a diagnosis of asthma were recruited, and in-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted. The interview transcripts were analyzed thematically using framework methods. RESULTS: Seventeen participants undertook interviews. Three themes and nine subthemes emerged: (1) decision-making need level-limited understanding of decision-making knowledge, ambiguity regarding self-empowerment roles, and lack of family member support; (2) decision-making support level-insufficient ability to evaluate information, inefficient communication with health care professionals, and excessive use of professional terminology; and (3) decision-making outcome level-doubts about the final decision-making choices, time constraints on decision-making, and absence of mechanisms to track decisions made. DISCUSSION: The findings would serve as crucial foundations for the development of decision-aid programs within the context of pediatric asthma.

PURPOSE: Sleep problems are a significant issue in patients with lung cancer, and resilience is a closely related factor. However, few studies have identified subgroups of resilience and their relationship with sleep quality. This study aimed to investigate whether there are different profiles of resilience in patients with lung cancer, to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of each subgroup, and to determine the relationship between resilience and sleep quality in different subgroups. METHODS: A total of 303 patients with lung cancer from four tertiary hospitals in China completed the General Sociodemographic sheet, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Latent profile analysis was applied to explore the latent profiles of resilience. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the sociodemographic variables in each profile, and ANOVA was used to explore the relationships between resilience profiles and sleep quality. RESULTS: The following three latent profiles were identified: the "high-resilience group" (30.2%), the "moderate-resilience group" (46.0%), and the "low-resilience group" (23.8%). Gender, place of residence, and average monthly household income significantly influenced the distribution of resilience in patients with lung cancer. CONCLUSION: The resilience patterns of patients with lung cancer varied. It is suggested that health care providers screen out various types of patients with multiple levels of resilience and pay more attention to female, rural, and poor patients. Additionally, individual differences in resilience may provide an actionable means for addressing sleep problems.

BACKGROUND: Lipid metabolism plays a pivotal role in asthma pathogenesis. However, a comprehensive analysis of the importance of lipid metabolism-related genes (LMRGs) in regulating the immune microenvironment in asthma remains lacking. The transcriptome matrix was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset. Differentially expressed analysis and weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) were conducted on the GSE74986 dataset to select hub LMRGs, and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was conducted to explore their biological functions. The CIBERSORT algorithm was used to determine immune infiltration in the asthma and control groups, and the correlation of diagnostic biomarkers and immune cells was performed via Spearman correlation analysis. Subsequently, a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was constructed to investigate the hidden molecular mechanism of asthma. The expression levels of the hub genes were further validated in the GSE143192 dataset, and RT‒qPCR and immunofluorescence were performed to verify the reliability of the results in the OVA asthma model. Lastly, the ceRNA network was confirmed by qRT-PCR and RNAi experiments in the characteristic cytokine (IL-13)-induced asthma cellular model. RESULTS: ASAH1, ACER3 and SGPP1 were identified as hub LMRGs and were mainly involved in protein secretion, mTORC1 signaling, and fatty acid metabolism. We found more infiltration of CD8+ T cells, activated NK cells, and monocytes and less M0 macrophage infiltration in the asthma group than in the healthy control group. In addition, ASAH1, ACER3, and SGPP1 were negatively correlated with CD8+ T cells and activated NK cells, but positively correlated with M0 macrophages. Within the ceRNA network, SNHG9-hsa-miR-615-3p-ACER3, hsa-miR-212-5p and hsa-miR-5682 may play crucial roles in asthma pathogenesis. The low expression of ASAH1 and SGPP1 in asthma was also validated in the GSE74075 dataset. After SNHG9 knockdown, miR-615-3p expression was significantly upregulated, while that of ACER3 was significantly downregulated. CONCLUSION: ASAH1, ACER3 and SGPP1 might be diagnostic biomarkers for asthma, and are associated with increased immune system activation. In addition, SNHG9-hsa-miR-615-3p-ACER3 may be viewed as effective therapeutic targets for asthma. Our findings might provide a novel perspective for future research on asthma.

The introduction of lanthanide ions (Ln3+) into all-inorganic lead-free halide perovskites has captured significant attention in optoelectronic applications. However, doping Ln3+ ions into heterometallic halide layered double perovskite (LDP) nanocrystals (NCs) and their associated doping mechanisms remain unexplored. Herein, we report the first colloidal synthesis of Ln3+ (Yb3+, Er3+)-doped LDP NCs utilizing a modified hot-injection method. The resulting NCs exhibit efficient near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence in both NIR-I and NIR-II regions, achieved through energy transfer down-conversion mechanisms. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Ln3+ dopants preferentially occupy the Sb3+ cation positions, resulting in a disruption of local site symmetry of the LDP lattices. By leveraging sensitizations of intermediate energy levels, we delved into a series of Ln3+-doped Cs4M(II)Sb2Cl12 (M(II): Cd2+ or Mn2+) LDP NCs via co-doping strategies. Remarkably, we observe a brightening effect of the predark states of Er3+ dopant in the Er3+-doped Cs4M(II)Sb2Cl12 LDP NCs owing to the Mn component acting as an intermediate energy bridge. This study not only advances our understanding of energy transfer mechanisms in doped NCs but also propels all-inorganic LDP NCs for a wider range of optoelectronic applications.

Alu exonization, or the recruitment of intronic Alu elements into gene sequences, has contributed to functional diversification; however, its extent and the ways in which it influences gene regulation are not fully understood. We developed an unbiased approach to predict Alu exonization events from genomic sequences implemented in a deep learning model, eXAlu, that overcomes the limitations of tissue or condition specificity and the computational burden of RNA-seq analysis. The model captures previously reported characteristics of exonized Alu sequences and can predict sequence elements important for Alu exonization. Using eXAlu, we estimate the number of Alu elements in the human genome undergoing exonization to be between 55-110K, 11-21 fold more than represented in the GENCODE gene database. Using RT-PCR we were able to validate selected predicted Alu exonization events, supporting the accuracy of our method. Lastly, we highlight a potential application of our method to identify polymorphic Alu insertion exonizations in individuals and in the population from whole genome sequencing data.

OBJECTIVES: Self-perception of aging (SPA) and social functioning are two important variables in the process of healthy aging, but the relationship between them is still unclear. This study aimed to explore the association between SPA and social functioning in older adults. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study utilizing data from the Health and Retirement Study. The sample comprised individuals aged 50 and above. Socio-demographic, psychosocial, and lifestyle information of study participants was systematically collected at baseline (2012 and 2014) and during follow-up four years later (2016 and 2018). SPA was measured using a scale assessing individuals' attitudes toward their aging process. Social functioning was evaluated through 22 questions, reflecting individuals' abilities to engage in and perform various roles and tasks in their daily lives. Multilevel modeling was employed to analyze the relationship between SPA and social functioning. Differences in social functioning changes among various SPA groups were assessed through the Generalized Estimating Equations methodology. RESULTS: The study included 8,454 participants with an average age of 68.3 years (SD = 9.92). The multilevel model revealed a significant correlation between SPA and social functioning (ß = 0.131; P < 0.001). This relationship persisted after adjusting the model (ß = 0.088; P < 0.001). Generalized Estimating Equations indicated noteworthy differences in social functioning changes among distinct SPA groups (P = 0.034). DISCUSSION: Positive SPA is associated with the healthy social functioning of older adults. Healthcare providers could target modifiable aspects of SPA to enhance the social function of older adults and promote successful aging.

The generation of bioactive truncated oxidized phospholipids (Tr-OxPLs) from oxidation of cell-membrane or circulating lipoproteins is a common feature of various pathological states. Scavenger receptor CD36 is involved in lipid transport and acts as a receptor for Tr-OxPLs. Interestingly, Tr-OxPLs and CD36 are involved in endothelial dysfunction-derived acute lung injury, but the precise mechanistic connections remain unexplored. In the present study, we investigated the role of CD36 in mediating pulmonary endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction caused by Tr-OxPLs. Our results demonstrated that the Tr-OxPLs KOdia-PC, Paz-PC, PGPC, PON-PC, POV-PC, and lysophosphocholine caused an acute EC barrier disruption as revealed by measurements of transendothelial electrical resistance and VE-cadherin immunostaining. More importantly, a synthetic amphipathic helical peptide, L37pA, targeting human CD36 strongly attenuated Tr-OxPL-induced EC permeability. L37pA also suppressed Tr-OxPL-induced endothelial inflammatory activation monitored by mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines/chemokines and adhesion molecules. In addition, L37pA blocked Tr-OxPL-induced NF-κB activation and tyrosine phosphorylation of Src kinase and VE-cadherin. The Src inhibitor SU6656 attenuated KOdia-PC-induced EC permeability and inflammation, but inhibition of the Toll-like receptors (TLRs) TLR1, TLR2, TLR4, and TLR6 had no such protective effects. CD36-knockout mice were more resistant to Tr-OxPL-induced lung injury. Treatment with L37pA was equally effective in ameliorating Tr-OxPL-induced vascular leak and lung inflammation as determined by an Evans blue extravasation assay and total cell and protein content in BAL fluid. Altogether, these results demonstrate an essential role of CD36 in mediating Tr-OxPL-induced EC dysfunction and suggest a strong therapeutic potential of CD36 inhibitory peptides in mitigating lung injury and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mental disorders where the gut-brain axis acts as a bidirectional communication network. METHODS: Herein, we investigated the compositional and functional differences of gut microbiome between patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) (n = 26) and healthy control participants (n = 22) using whole-genome shotgun sequencing. In addition, we assessed the oral microbiome in patients with FEP (n = 13) and listed their taxonomic diversity. RESULTS: Our findings suggest that there is a dysbiosis of gut microbiota in patients with FEP. Relative abundance of Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Prevotella copri, and Turicibacter sanguinis was markedly increased (linear discriminant analysis scores [log10] > 1, and Mann-Whitney U test; false discovery rate-adjusted p values < .05) in the FEP group compared with the healthy control participants. Pathway analysis indicated that several metabolic pathways, particularly deoxyribonucleotide biosynthesis, branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and fatty acid elongation and biosynthesis, were dysregulated in the FEP group compared with the healthy control group. In addition, this preliminary study was able to identify specific gut microbes (at baseline) that were predictive of weight gain in the FEP group at a 1-year follow-up. Bacteroides dorei, Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Turicibacter sanguinis, Roseburia spp., and Ruminococcus lactaris were positively associated (eXtreme gradient boosting, XGBoost regression model, Shapley additive explanations, R2 = 0.82) with weight gain. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings may suggest the involvement of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of psychosis. The benefit of modulation of the gut microbiome in the treatment of psychotic disorders should be explored further.

Despite intensive studies for decades, the common mechanistic correlations among the underlying pathology of diabetes mellitus (DM), its complications, and effective clinical treatments remain poorly characterized. High-quality diets and nutrition therapy have played an indispensable role in the management of DM. More importantly, tribbles homolog 3 (TRIB3), a nutrient-sensing and glucose-responsive regulator, might be an important stress-regulatory switch, linking glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance. Therefore, this review aimed to introduce the latest research progress on the crosstalk between dietary nutrition intervention and TRIB3 in the development and treatment of DM. This study also summarized the possible mechanisms involved in the signaling pathways of TRIB3 action in DM, in order to gain an in-depth understanding of dietary nutrition intervention and TRIB3 in the pathogenesis of DM at the organism level.
