With the increase in global economic integration, high-quality economic development (HQED) has become a common goal of all countries. Based on these five development concepts, this paper uses the Gini coefficient, trend surface analysis, geographically weighted regression (GWR), the entropy weighting method, and standard deviation ellipse analysis to study the spatio-temporal pattern and driving mechanism of HQED in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). This paper examines the spatial and temporal patterns and driving mechanisms of HQED in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) based on five development concepts. The study revealed that (1) HQED is on the rise overall, but at the same time, it highlights the uneven development of multiple dimensions, especially in terms of significant differences in innovation, openness, and sharing. (2) HQED shows a clear center-periphery structure, with Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong as the core high-value areas; the growth rate of HQED capacity in the internal areas is significantly greater than that in the external areas, and HQED is prominent in the cities around Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. (3) Factors such as agglomeration level, human capital, foreign investment, infrastructure development, financial and environmental protection expenditures, and financial inputs, and scientific, and technological inputs have a significant positive effect on HQED, and their interactions are further strengthened. This study reveals the importance of the realization of HQED in the GBA and the promotion of the overall development of the region.

In the context of the digital information era, the impact of "The Internet Plus," "Big Data," and other technologies on urban social development has been far beyond any preceding era, under the influence of information technology, urban agglomeration space exhibits a new layout. Based on the search engine data of eleven cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area from 2012 to 2021, this research constructs the inter-city information network strength linkage matrix to examine the evolution characteristics of city network structure and its driving causes. The results reveal that (1) the overall information linkage strength exhibits a pattern of steadily growing the radiating effect from the leading cities of Guangdong, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong to the surrounding cities, and a closer and more balanced information linkage network is gradually built. (2) Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area information linkage absolute control advantage, four cities Foshan, Dongguan, Zhuhai, Macao regional hub position steadily highlighted. The entire information connection network of the urban agglomerations tends to be flat and polycentric at the same time. (3) The regional core-edge hierarchy is well established, with the four cities of Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong creating a northwest-southeast orientation. The core metropolis regions of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao in the Greater Bay Area increasingly exert a radiation spreading effect to the northeast and southwest. (4) The urban economy, transportation distance, and information infrastructure have substantial effects on the information connection intensity network of urban clusters.

In recent times, a new wave of scientific and technological advancements has significantly reshaped the global economic structure. This shift has redefined the role of regional innovation, particularly in its contribution to developing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area (GBA) into a renowned center for science, technology, and innovation. This study constructs a comprehensive evaluation system for the Regional Innovation Ecosystem (RIE). By applying the coupling coordination degree model and social network analysis, we have extensively analyzed the spatial structure and network attributes of the coupled and coordinated innovation ecosystem in the GBA from 2010 to 2019. Our findings reveal several key developments: (1) There has been a noticeable rightward shift in the kernel density curve, indicating an ongoing optimization of the overall coupling coordination level. Notably, the center of gravity for coupling coordination has progressively moved southeast. This shift has led to a reduction in the elliptical area each year, while the trend surface consistently shows a convex orientation toward the center. The most significant development is observed along the 'Guangdong-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Technology Innovation Corridor', where the level of coupling coordination has become increasingly pronounced. (2) The spatial linkages within the GBA have been strengthening. There are significant spatial transaction costs in the regional innovation ecological network. In the context of the 2019 US-China trade war, the cities of Jiangmen and Zhaoqing experienced a notable decrease in connectivity with other cities, raising concerns about their potential marginalization. (3) Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong have emerged as core nodes within the network. The network exhibits a distinctive "core-edge" spatial structure, characterized by both robustness and vulnerability in various aspects.

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that mediates immune modulation following exposure of animals to many environmental xenobiotics. However, its role in innate immune responses during viral infection is not fully understood, especially in invertebrates. In this study, a cDNA encoding an AhR homolog was cloned from an arthropod Litopenaeus vannamei (LvAhR). The expression of LvAhR was strongly upregulated in response to the challenge of white spot syndrome virus, a pathogen of highly contagious and fatal infectious disease of shrimp. The relevance of LvAhR to host defense was underlined by heightened susceptibility and elevated virus loads after AhR-silenced shrimp exposure to white spot syndrome virus. LvAhR could induce an apoptosis response through regulating the expression of L. vannamei caspase-1 (homologous to human caspase-3) by directly targeting its promoter that was required to couple with AhR nuclear translocator. Additionally, knockdown of L. vannamei caspase-1 resulted in elevated virus titers and a lower cell apoptotic rate. Thus, we demonstrate that an AhR-caspase axis restrains virus replication by promoting antiviral apoptosis, supporting a previously unidentified direct link between AhR signaling and caspase-mediated apoptosis signaling and, furthermore, suggests that the AhR-caspase axis could be a potential therapeutic target for enhancing antiviral responses in arthropods.

Phytoremediation is a promising and sustainable technology to remediate the risk of heavy metals (HMs) contaminated soils, however, this way is limited to some factors contributing to slow plant growth and low remediation efficiency. As soil beneficial microbe, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) assisted phytoremediation is an environment-friendly and high-efficiency bioremediation technology. However, AMF-symbiotic formation and their functional expression responsible for HMs-polluted remediation are significantly influenced by edaphic fauna. Earthworms as common soil fauna, may have various effects on formation of AMF symbiosis, and exhibit synergy with AMF for the combined remediation of HMs-contaminated soils. For now, AMF-assisted phytoremediation incorporating earthworm coexistence is scarcely reported. Therefore, the main focus of this review is to discuss the AMF effects under earthworm coexistence. Effects of AMF-symbiotic formation influenced by earthworms are fully reviewed. Moreover, underlying mechanisms and synergy of the two in HMs remediation, soil improvement, and plant growth were comprehensively elucidated. Phenomenon of "functional synergism" between earthworms and AMF may be a significant mechanism for HMs phytoremediation. Finally, this review analyses shortcomings and prescriptions in the practical application of the technology and provides new insights into AMF- earthworms synergistic remediation of HMs-contaminated soils.

Meiotic recombination 11 (MRE11), a key component of the MRE11-RAD50-NBS1 (MRN) complex, plays important roles in damaged DNA repair and immune response. In this study, we described the molecular cloning of a new member of MRE11 from Litopenaeus vannamei named as LvMRE11. The full length of LvMRE11 was 2999 bp, including a 1947 bp open reading frame (ORF) that encoded a putative protein of 648 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of ∼73.2 kDa LvMRE11 was universally expressed in all tested tissues and its expression in intestine was responsive to the challenge of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), poly (I: C), poly [dA:dT], CpG-ODN 2006 and IFN stimulatory DNA (ISD). The dsRNA-mediated knockdown of LvMRE11 enhanced the susceptibility of shrimps to WSSV infection, as manifested by a higher mortality and viral loads observed in LvMRE11 silenced shrimps. Besides, silencing of LvMRE11 resulted in decreased expression levels of IRF-Vago-JAK/STAT pathway components, and Dorsal but not the Relish, as well as several antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). In conclusion, we provided some evidences that the involvement of LvMRE11 in innate immune against virus infection probably through regulating the IRF and Dorsal mediated antiviral pathways.

MAPK and NF-κB pathways are important components of innate immune system in multicellular animals. In some model organisms, the MAP3-kinase TGF-beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) have been shown to regulate both MAPK and NF-κB pathways activation to tailor immune responses to pathogens or infections. However, this process is not fully understood in shrimp. In this study, we investigated the effect of TAK1 on MAPK and NF-κB activation in shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei following Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection. We found that shrimp TAK1 could activate c-Jun and Relish, the transcription factors of MAPK pathway and NF-κB pathway, respectively. Specifically, over-expression of shrimp TAK1 was able to strongly induce the activities of both AP-1 and NF-κB reporters. TAK1 was shown to bind several MAP2-kinases, including MKK4, MKK6 and MKK7, and induced their phosphorylations, the hallmarks for MAPK pathways activation. TAK1 knockdown in vivo also inhibited the nuclear translocation of c-Jun and Relish during V. parahaemolyticus infection. Accordingly, ectopic expression of shrimp TAK1 in Drosophila S2 cells increased the cleavage of co-expressed shrimp Relish, and induced the promoter activity of Relish targeted gene Diptericin (Dpt). Furthermore, knockdown of c-Jun and Relish enhanced the sensitivity of shrimp to V. parahaemolyticus infection. These findings indicated that shrimp TAK1 conferred antibacterial protection through regulating the activation of both MAPK pathway and NF-κB pathway, and suggested that the TAK1-MAPK/NF-κB axis could be a potential therapeutic target for enhancing antibacterial responses in crustaceans.

Tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR)-associated factors (TRAFs) are vital signaling adaptor proteins for the innate immune response and are involved in many important pathways, such as the NF-κB- and interferon regulatory factor (IRF)-activated signaling pathways. In this study, the TRAF3 ortholog from the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (LvTRAF3) was cloned and characterized. LvTRAF3 has a transcript of 3,865 bp, with an open reading frame (ORF) of 1,002 bp and encodes a polypeptide of 333 amino acids, including a conserved TRAF-C domain. The expression of LvTRAF3 in the intestine and hemocyte was up-regulated in response to poly (I:C) challenge and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infection. RNAi knockdown of LvTRAF3 in vivo significantly increased WSSV gene transcription, viral loads, and mortality in WSSV-infected shrimp. Next, we found that LvTRAF3 was not able to induce the activation of the NF-κB pathway, which was crucial for synthesis of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which mediate antiviral immunity. Specifically, in dual-luciferase reporter assays, LvTRAF3 could not activate several types of promoters with NF-κB binding sites, including those from WSSV genes (wsv069, wsv056, and wsv403), Drosophila AMPs or shrimp AMPs. Accordingly, the mRNA levels of shrimp AMPs did not significantly change when TRAF3 was knocked down during WSSV infection. Instead, we found that LvTRAF3 signaled through the IRF-Vago antiviral cascade. LvTRAF3 functioned upstream of LvIRF to regulate the expression of LvVago4 and LvVago5 during WSSV infection in vivo. Taken together, these data provide experimental evidence of the participation of LvTRAF3 in the host defense to WSSV through the activation of the IRF-Vago pathway but not the NF-κB pathway.

A novel diagnostic scheme that includes pancreatic ß­cell dysfunction analysis for the diagnosis of traumatic multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) was investigated to assist in the early diagnosis and detection of MODS. Early intervention and treatment of MODS has been associated with a reduced mortality rate. A total of 2,876 trauma patients (including patients post­major surgery) were admitted to the intensive care unit of the authors' hospital between December 2010 and December 2015 and enrolled in the present study. There were 205 cases where the patient succumbed to their injuries. In addition to the conventional diagnostic scheme for traumatic MODS, indexes of pancreatic ß­cell dysfunction [fasting blood­glucose (FBG), homeostatic model assessment­ß and (blood insulin concentration 30 min following glucose loading­fasting insulin concentration)/(blood glucose concentration 30 min following glucose loading­FBG concentration)] were included to establish an improved diagnostic scheme for traumatic MODS. The novel scheme was subsequently used in clinical practice alongside the conventional scheme and its effect was evaluated. The novel scheme had a significantly higher positive number of MODS diagnoses for all trauma patients compared with the conventional scheme (12.48 vs. 8.87%; P<0.01). No significant difference was identified in the final percentage of positive of MODS diagnoses for trauma­associated mortality patients between the novel (88.30%) and the conventional scheme (86.34%). The novel scheme had a significantly higher positive number of MODS diagnoses for trauma­associated mortality patients 3 days prior to patients succumbing to MODS compared with the conventional scheme (80.98 vs. 64.39%; P<0.01). The consensus of the MODS diagnosis of all trauma patients between the novel scheme and the conventional scheme was 100%; however, out of the patients diagnosed as positive by novel scheme 71.03% were positive by the conventional scheme. The consensus between the final MODS diagnosis and the MODS diagnosis 3 days prior to patients succumbing to their injuries between the novel scheme and the conventional scheme was 100%; however, out of the patients diagnosed as positive by novel scheme 97.79 were positive by the conventional scheme of the 205 patients who succumbed to MODS and out of the patients diagnosed as positive for MODS by novel scheme 3 days prior to succumbing, 79.52% were positive by the conventional scheme. The results of the present study demonstrated that the novel diagnostic scheme using the relevant indexes of pancreatic ß­cell dysfunction for diagnosis of traumatic MODS, was able to diagnose MODS early without excessively extending the diagnostic scope. Its clinical application should be promoted.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation response and oxidative stress promote the occurrence and development of multiple-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). METHODS: Eighty MODS rats with third-degree burns were divided randomly into 4 groups: insulin, ethyl pyruvate (EP), insulin combined with EP, and control. Blood levels of glucose, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatine (CRE), creatine kinase (CK), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) before as well as 1, 3, 5, and 7 days after burns were measured. RESULTS: Blood levels of ALT, CRE, CK, TNF-α, HMGB-1, and MDA in INS, EP, and INS+EP groups at different time points were significantly lower, and TAC was significantly higher than that in the control group (C) (P<.01). These parameters in the INS+EP group were significantly lower, and TAC was significantly higher than that in INS and EP groups (P<.01). Blood levels of TNF-α, HMGB-1, and TAC in the INS group at different time points after burns were significantly lower, and MDA was significantly higher than that in the EP group (P<.01). CONCLUSIONS: Insulin combined with EP can effectively reduce the inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and main organ dysfunctions in MODS rats after severe burns. The therapeutic effect of insulin combined with EP is superior to single-agent treatment. The insulin anti-inflammatory effect is better than that of pyruvic acid ethyl ester, and the ethyl pyruvate antioxidation effect is better than that of insulin. The insulin can treat inflammation, whereas EP can reduce oxidative stress in MODS rats.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of rare mesenchymal neoplasms. The PEComas, composed of epithelioid and spindle cells, have the same cellular and immunohistochemical features but are found in different visceral and soft tissue sites. Here, we report the histological and immunohistochemical features of one case of PEComa restricted in the pelvic visceral peritoneum of a male patient. The patient was treated with radical surgery, and was well and on follow-up visits without tumor recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the penile erectile function, urinary continence and voiding, and cancer recurrence in 18 bladder cancer patients after sexuality preserving cystectomy and Roux-y sigmoid neobladder reconstruction. METHODS: Eighteen male patients with bladder cancer underwent sexuality preserving cystectomy and Roux-y sigmoid neobladder reconstruction, and were followed up for cancer recurrence and such clinical outcomes as erectile function and urinary continence and voiding. RESULTS: The patients were followed up for an average of 41 months, of whom, all achieved day- and night-time urinary continence, but 2 with positive lymph nodes died of extensive metastasis at 10 and 15 months, respectively, after surgery. Among the total number, potency was maintained in 11 patients (61.1%), impaired in 2 and lost in 5, and the post-operative IIEF-5 score was (10.83 +/- 8.25) as compared with (13.72 +/- 6.39) before the operation, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Erectile function and urinary continence are fairly good in bladder cancer patients after sexuality preserving cystectomy and Roux-y sigmoid neobladder reconstruction, and the oncological results are fairly acceptable, but still need to be confirmed by longer follow-ups and larger trials.
