Currently commercial fixed-concomitant three agents have multiple problems such as multiple dosing administration, poor efficacy and side effects. Once-daily fixed-combination timolol-netarsudil-latanoprost ophthalmic solution (FC-TNL) has the ability to treat glaucoma by lowering the intraocular pressure (IOP) with great efficacy and improving patient compliance. However, the commercialized netarsudil dimesylate precipitated when the pH of the solution was above 5.4, or when maleic acid, the salt of commercial timolol maleate, was mixed with netarsudil dimesylate. Consequently, the homologous salt engineering strategy was used to make netarsudil dimesylate soluble in pH 4.8-5.2 solution by synthesizing timolol mesylate. Next, the morphology of timolol mesylate was observed by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction. The prepared FC-TNL showed good stability during refrigeration storage. Additionally, FC-TNL exerted no influence on the intraocular penetration of each active compounds in the pharmacokinetic study. Importantly, once-daily FC-TNL exerted potent IOP-lowering effect and protective effect on retinal ganglion cells. The FC-TNL was stable, safe and effective, being a promising glaucoma therapeutic.

A convenient and promising alternative to surface modification of carbon mesh anode was fulfilled by electrochemical oxidation in the electrolyte of nitric acid or ammonium nitrate at ambient temperature. It was confirmed that such an anode modification method was low cost and effective not only in improving the efficiency of power generation in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for synthetic wastewater treatment, but also helping to reduce the period for MFCs start-up. The MFCs with anode modification in electrolyte of nitric acid performed the best, achieving a Coulombic efficiency enhancement of 71 %. As characterized, the electrochemical modification resulted in the decrease of the anode potential and internal resistance but the increase of current response and nitrogen-containing and oxygen-containing functional groups on the carbon surface, which might contribute to the enhancement on the performances of MFCs.

To improve denitrification performance and effective degradation of organic pollutants from micro-polluted groundwater simultaneously, a novel three-dimensional (3D) bio-electrochemical reactor was developed, which introduced activated carbon into a traditional two-dimensional (2D) reactor as the third electrode. The static and dynamic characteristics of the reactor were investigated with special attentions paid to the performance comparison of these two reactors. In the 3D reactor both TOC and nitrate removal efficiency were greatly improved, and the formation of nitrite byproduct is considerably reduced, comparing with that of the 2D reactor. The role of activated carbon biofilm was explored and possible remediation mechanisms for the 2D and 3D reactors were suggested. In such a 3D reactor, the denitrification rate improved greatly to 0.288 mg NO(3)-N/cm(2)/d and the current efficiency could reach as high as 285%. Further, it demonstrated good performance stably against variable conditions, indicating very promising in application for groundwater remediation.
