RESUMEN

The eruption of the Hunga-Tonga volcano in the South Pacific Ocean on January 15, 2022, at about 4:15 UTC, generated a violent explosion, which created atmospheric pressure disturbances in the form of Rayleigh-Lamb waves detected all over the globe. Here we discuss the observation of the Hunga-Tonga shock-wave performed at the Ny-Ålesund Research Station on the Spitsbergen island, by the detectors of the PolarquEEEst experiment and their ancillary sensors. Online pressure data as well as the results of dedicated offline analysis are presented and discussed in details. Results include wave arrival times, wave amplitude measurements and wave velocity calculation. We observed five passages of the shock wave with a significance larger than 3 [Formula: see text] and an amplitude up to 1 hPa. The average propagation velocity resulted to be (308 ± 0.6) m/s. Possible effects of the atmospheric pressure variation associated with the shock-wave multiple passages on the cosmic-ray rate at ground level are also investigated. We did not find any significant evidence of this effect.

RESUMEN

From 1975 to 1986, 102 high tibial osteotomies for varus gonarthrosis were performed in 99 patients. Fifty-eight patients (60 knees) were reviewed at an average followup of 15 years (range, 10-21 years); of the remaining 41 patients, seven had a knee replacement, 18 had died, and 16 were lost to followup. The results, assessed according to the scoring system of the Hospital for Special Surgery and including the seven patients who underwent a knee replacement, were excellent or good in 37 (55%) knees and fair or poor in 30 (45%). Twenty-six patients of the current study previously were reviewed in 1986, with an average followup of 8 years, using the same clinical and radiographic criteria. In this group of 26 patients, excellent and good results decreased from 73% in 1986 to 46% in 1996. The knees in these 26 patients with a followup greater than 15 years had a statistically significant higher percentage of fair and poor results. No statistically significant differences in the results were found according to the amount of correction. Radiographic controls at followup were available for 45 of the 60 knees; a loss of correction greater than 5 degrees was observed in 11 knees. The results of this long-term followup study show that high tibial osteotomy for gonarthrosis allows a long period (range, 10-15 years) of relief of pain, good range of motion, and function in a large number of patients. Results tend to deteriorate with time, particularly after 15 years.

RESUMEN

We describe a disease, started in a female young adult patient as an apparent pulmonary siderosis, followed nine years later by an extracapillary proliferative nephritis, which developed to uremia in a few months. Later an intra-myocardial vasculitis, responsible of heart failure, appeared. Immune-histochemistry and serological tests exclude a disease mediated by anti-GMB antibodies, and pathologic features suggest a vasculitis mainly affecting lungs and kidneys.

RESUMEN

The chemiluminescence of alveolar macrophages was determined in presence of luminol or lucigenin, either before or after the macrophage isolation by adherence to plastic. In presence of luminol, the purified and non-purified macrophages behave almost in the same way, and their chemiluminescence activity is stimulated both by zymosan and phorbol ester. On the other hand, the lucigenin chemiluminescence of non-purified macrophages is considerably higher than that obtained in presence of luminol, but is almost completely insensitive to the zymosan or phorbol ester stimulation. Moreover, the adherence purification considerably inhibits the lucigenin chemiluminescence. These results can be indicative of functionally different macrophage states.
