RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to analyze oral health actions in four municipalities in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic according to a theoretical framework model on oral healthcare management. It was a qualitative study carried out in two stages. A theoretical-empirical model on the significance of oral healthcare management was developed, following the Grounded Theory method. Fourteen dentists and five healthcare managers participated, through open interview. Subsequently, collaborative research was performed, and the model was applied to analyze the documents produced to address the pandemic by each of four municipalities in Santa Catarina State. The model provided a framework for analyzing actions for coping with the pandemic regarding oral health services. Actions were identified in all dimensions of the model: reduction in supply of dental care due to restricted access to elective services; search for biosafety care standards; dissemination of standardized science-based guidelines; attempt to maintain comprehensive dental assistance through re-adaptation of specialized services and collective actions; and relocation of oral health professionals to assist in other sectors. The oral health care management framework can serve as a reference for redesigning oral health actions and services in other municipalities during the COVID-19 pandemic, in a broader perspective.

Objective: To understand the feasibility of using telehealth for mental health services among college students. Participants: College students (N = 16) attending a university in Southern California, 18 years or older, and living in the residential halls. Methods: Two face-to-face semi-structured focus groups were conducted using a semi-structured moderator guide. Written consent and a demographic survey were completed. Descriptive thematic analysis was conducted independently by members of the research team. Results: Participants reported mixed feelings about their level of comfort using technology to access mental health services. Some participants acknowledged the value of using technology, while many voiced issues of distrust and privacy, in addition to the loss of empathy and personal connection with the mental health practitioner. Conclusion: Offering a menu of telehealth options including a hybrid approach (in-person/telehealth) may be necessary to address the issues of comfort, privacy, and trust to effectively reach college students with technology-based mental health services.

RESUMEN

Objective: To examine the effect of receiving daily motivational text messages on the change in college students' nutritional choices and levels of physical activity. Participants: Two hundred and one university students participated in an eight-week experimental/control group study. Methods: All participants received a brochure that contained nutritional and physical-activity information. The survey consisted of three parts: demographic information, health and diet, and physical activity. All participants completed a self-administered survey at the beginning and the end of the eight-week study. The experimental group participants received a daily motivational-text message. Results: There were significant interactions between group and time on most of the health and diet items, but there were no significant interactions on the physical activity items. Conclusions: It is crucial to monitor and promote college students' nutrition and physical activity behaviors. The study findings will be vital in designing interventions that enhance college students' general health.

RESUMEN

Management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders require provider skill, rapport, and referral acumen to treat patients across the life span. Incidence and prevalence have increased in the United States and globally. There are innovative models of evidence-informed screening techniques, treatment strategies to help providers work with patients and their families. Diplomatic management of highly charged treatment controversies, drug diversion, and risk factor reduction helps to ethically address this growing public health phenomenon. This article examines risk factors and treatment considerations in the United States for evidence-informed care, with a focus on affordable and readily accessible treatment in primary care settings.

RESUMEN

Human trafficking is the intentional exploitation of vulnerable individuals for the personal gain of the exploiter and is now recognized as an emerging public health care priority. Health care providers are well positioned to identify and assist trafficked individuals as well as those who may be at risk for exploitation. Trauma informed care is essential to identify victims and evaluate the impact of traumatic stress while highlighting survivors' strengths and supporting their resiliency. Human trafficking demographics, including mental and physical health problems, health considerations, risk factors, screening, implications for practice, and national resources, are reviewed.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Examine the importance of feedback, specifically the perception of parental autonomy support, to reduce youths' premature treatment dropout. DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted, utilizing the convenience-purposive sample of 60 patient charts. Individuals were seen between October 2014 and July 2015 in a community clinic utilizing a treatment approach known as feedback-informed treatment (FIT). FINDINGS: Clients found to have high paternal involvement reported better overall well-being and lower levels of distress. CONCLUSIONS: The construct of parental autonomy support, when combined with a FIT treatment model, is a promising approach to lower the rate of early treatment termination.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of orthorexia nervosa (ON) has been noted by clinicians since 1996 and described in the scientific literature, and yet there is no formal recognition of ON as a psychiatric diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: Review the latest available literature regarding diagnoses similarities, presentation uniqueness, assessment/assessment tools, and suggested treatments of ON. METHOD/DESIGN: A literature search of four databases focusing on articles published between 2000 and 2016 was conducted to evaluate the status of the literature on Orthorexia. RESULTS: Among the 15 articles selected for this review, similarities with other psychiatric disorders emerged, confusion about use of assessment tools existed, and the lack of evidence based treatments for ON was pronounced. CONCLUSION: More research is needed to determine the prevalence of pathologically unhealthy, obsessive, "self-defined healthy," eating behaviors, and to determine if ON is a unique eating disorder or just a subset of another disorder.
