RESUMEN

The development of construction materials with the integration of phase change materials (PCMs) has been a topic of wide interest in the scientific community, especially in recent years, due to its positive impact on temperature regulation inside buildings. However, little is known about the behavior of materials doped with PCMs when exposed to accidental or severe environments. Currently, a large area of the planet experiences seasonal freeze-thaw effects, which impact the durability and performance of construction materials. Accordingly, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the damage caused by cyclic freeze-thaw actions on the behavior of a cement mortar, including a PEG-based form-stable PCM. An experimental methodology was developed based on the physical and mechanical characterization of mortars under normal operating conditions and after being subjected to freeze-thaw cycles. The results indicated that, under normal exposure conditions, the incorporation of aggregate functionalized with PCM led to a decrease in the mortar's water absorption capacity, compressive strength, and adhesion. However, its applicability has not been compromised. Exposure to freeze-thaw cycles caused a loss of mass in the specimens and a decrease in the compressive strength and adhesion capability of the mortar.

RESUMEN

To address the growing global water demand, it is imperative to implement advanced treatment systems and sustainable alternatives for managing the large amount of waste generated during the water purification process, known as water treatment sludge (WTS). Worldwide, researchers and companies are exploring alternatives and methods for the valorization of WTS as a raw material in other processes. It is urgent that all productive sectors, which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, adopt this management principle to ensure more sustainable production, contributing to the global goal of climate neutrality. Notably, in civil construction, incorporating WTS as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) shows great promise, considering that the industrial waste currently used for this purpose is increasingly restricted. The use of WTS as a raw material in the cement industry not only contributes to the reduction of the carbon footprint, but also reduces the high waste load still disposed of in landfills. The emerging applications for WTP sludge are reviewed, with emphasis on its valorization in the civil construction as an SCM. The main characteristics of this waste and their impacts on the environment are also addressed.

Enterococcus is a bacterial genus that is strongly associated with nosocomial infections and has a high capacity to transfer and acquire resistance genes. In this study, the main objective was to evaluate the presence of Enterococcus species in ornamental animal feed and characterize their antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using 14 antimicrobial agents by the disk diffusion method, complemented by genotypic analysis to identify Enterococcus species and the presence of 14 antimicrobial resistance and 10 virulence genes. From 57 samples of ornamental animal feed, 103 Enterococcus isolates were recovered from 15 bird, 9 fish and 4 reptile feed samples. Enterococcus isolates were highly resistance to rifampicin (78%) and erythromycin (48%), and 48% of isolates were classified as multidrug-resistant. Enterococcus faecalis (36.7%) and E. faecium (31.7%) were the species most frequently identified. Most isolates carried the resistance genes ermB (57%) and tetL (52%) and the virulence genes, cylL (52%) and esp (40%). Enterococcus gallinarum was the species with the highest number of multidrug-resistant isolates (50%) and virulence genes (80%). These results highlight the high levels of antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus spp. present in ornamental animal feed and the growing interaction of these animals with humans as a public health concern.

Increasing construction and demolition waste (CDW) and the large amount of energy consumption in the building operation process are high-profile issues at present. In the construction industry, recycled aggregated (RA) from CDW can be reutilized in construction, along with green materials, for example, as a road base layer, as aggregate in concrete, etc. Phase change materials (PCM) are often used as building materials due to their good latent heat storage properties. With the use of RA as a matrix to absorb PCM, a thermal performance aggregate can be obtained. This work studied the physical properties of RA from Portugal and combined PCM with RA to prepare a green thermal aggregate through two methodologies using a vacuum and atmospheric pressure. The green aggregate was used in concrete to observe its effect on the compressive strength of concrete. The results showed that the amount of PCM absorbed by the RA mainly depends on the porosity of the matrix material. At the same time, the volume expansion coefficient of PCM was 2.7%, which was not enough to destroy the RA. Ultimately, as the amount of green thermal aggregate increases, the compressive strength of concrete decreases. Green thermal aggregate prepared under vacuum conditions has a greater negative impact on the compressive strength of concrete.

The lost wax foundry industry has been rapidly expanding in recent years, generating a large amount of waste due to the fact that most of the durable goods include castings and the need for dimensional precision castings for specific purposes, such as the automotive and aeronautics sectors. The waste produced by this industry is currently being deposited in landfills because practical applications are not known and cannot be reused in a new production process, and recycling is also a challenge because of the economics of the process. Thus, the main objective of this study consists in the incorporation of the produced wastes by the lost wax casting foundry industry (ceramic molds shells and paraffin wax) as substitutes for natural aggregate in exterior coatings mortars, evaluating their behavior under normal operating conditions and against freeze-thaw actions. The obtained results revealed porosity, flexural strength, and compressive strength adequate under normal operating conditions. The freeze-thaw performance of the mortars with waste incorporation was similar to the mortars developed with natural aggregates. Thus, the potential of the ceramic mold shells and paraffinic waxes utilization in cementitious mortars for the construction sector was demonstrated.

There is a dearth of adhesive systems capable of forming stable bonds between restorative materials and tooth surfaces. To address the concern, this study determined the effects of using methacrylate-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) in a polymeric dental adhesive system. The bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate (BisGMA):2 hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) (60:40) adhesive monomer blend with a photoinitiator was filled with 0 wt% (control), 0.1 wt%, and 1 wt% BNNSs and light cured. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was performed to determine the conversion degree of monomer double bonds (DoC). Water absorption and solubility were measured. Flexural strength and Youngs's modulus were evaluated to determine the mechanical properties of the composite adhesive system. Finally, dentin bond strength degradation and fracture mode were quantified with a microtensile bond test to confirm the bonding ability of the developed adhesive system. Results showed that the incorporation of BNNSs increased DoC (9.8% and 5.4% for 0.1 and 1 wt%, respectively), but it did not affect water sorption (101.9-119.72 (µg/mm3)), solubility (2.62-5.54 (µg/mm3)), Young's modulus (529.1-1716.1 MPa), or microtensile bond strength (46.66-54.72 MPa). Further studies are needed with varying BNNS loading percentages from 0.1 wt% to 1 wt% in order to more comprehensively determine the effect of BNNSs on dental adhesives.

Enterococci are considered among the most prevalent global multidrug-resistant microorganisms globally. Their dissemination is a global concern, particularly by food-producing animals for both animals and humans. The aim of this study was to identify the species and investigate the antibiotic resistance and virulence profile of Enterococcus in bovine colostrum. Out of 88 presumptive Enterococcus isolates, species identification and susceptibility to 14 antimicrobials were tested using the disk diffusion method. An analysis of the antibiotic resistance and virulence genes was performed on the most prevalent species, using specific PCR assays. Enterococcus faecalis (54.5%), E. faecium (14.8%) and E. gallinarum (6.8%) were the identified species. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of E. gallinarum in bovine colostrum. The majority of the isolates showed resistance to quinupristin-dalfopristin (95.9%), erythromycin (80.7%), tetracycline (80.7%) and streptomycin (58%). Ninety-two percent of isolates were classified as multidrug-resistant. The most frequently detected resistance genes were tet(K) (61.1%), tet(M) (75.9%), tet(L) (90.7%), erm(B) (55.6%) and ant(6)-Ia (46.3%). The most prevalent virulence factors were cpd, esp, agg and cylLL. Enterococcus faecium showed a higher probability of carrying the erm(C), tet(M), ace and gel(E) genes (p < 0.05). These results demonstrated that colostrum can constitute an important reservoir and vehicle for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance and virulence genes to the three niches included in a One Health perspective (humans, animals and the environment), highlighting the importance of hygiene sanitary measures to mitigate colostrum microbial contamination.

AIMS: To conduct a systematic review to determine the efficacy of violet led in promoting dental bleaching by itself or accelerating dental bleaching when associated with peroxides. METHODS: Clinical and in vitro studies were identified by a search on November 27th 2020 in the PubMed and Scopus databases. Inclusion criteria were: 1) studies related to bleaching; 2) studies related to violet LED Light (405-410nm); and 3) studies that analyzed efficacy. The authors assessed the studies for risk of bias independently. Authors extracted outcomes including color change evaluation and pain assessment independently. RESULTS: During the search process, 895 articles were found in the previously cited databases. After the first screening consisting of title and abstract evaluations, 18 articles were selected. Finally, 13 articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in this review, being 5 clinical trial/case series and 8 in vitro studies. In vitro studies showed a high risk of bias and interventional studies showed a low risk of bias. CONCLUSION: The violet Led seems to have the potential to bleach teeth without peroxides, with a clinical perceptible color alteration. However, the effect is small in comparison to bleaching using peroxides. When Violet Led is used in association with peroxides, it seems to potentialize the bleaching result. However, due to the high heterogeneity between studies, a small number of clinical studies, and the high risk of bias of the in vitro included studies, the results are not definitive, and further well-designed studies are needed to reach safe evidence.

BACKGROUND: To clinically evaluate the effect of 35% hydrogen peroxide gel renewal in association with violet LED (405-410nm) through a split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial. METHODS: The treatment consisted in 3 bleaching sessions of 15 min each, with an interval of 7 days between them, using 35% hydrogen peroxide combined to violet LED irradiation. Selected patients had two experimental segments for the split-mouth design: No change of the bleaching gel during each session (NBGR) and 3 changes of the bleaching gel every 5 min for each session (BGR). During the 3 bleaching sessions, the selected quadrant received the same treatment. Patients had their upper canines and central incisors teeth color measured with a subjective (color scale - VITA Classical) and an objective (spectrophotometer - VITA Easyshade) method and their teeth sensitivity measured using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) before, immediately after each bleaching session, and 14 days and 2 months (60 days) after the end of the treatment. RESULTS: The protocol adopted in the present study reached satisfactory results regarding color change. No statistical difference between groups was observed immediately after the end of the treatment and in the follow-up analysis for both subjective and objective color evaluation. No difference in tooth sensitivity between segments was observed. CONCLUSION: There is no need for bleaching gel renewal when following the clinical protocol of 3 sessions of 15 min in a bleaching protocol of 35% hydrogen peroxide combined with violet LED.

The differential diagnosis of true aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms is challenging, and multimodality cardiac imaging is often necessary. We report a case in which the limitations of these techniques are exposed, showing that post-operative evaluation of tissue layers remains the gold standard in establishing this diagnosis. BACKGROUND: Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) is one of the most widespread infections that can effect the orofacial region. Recurrent infection is considered a life-long oral health problem, leading to pain, discomfort, and social restriction due to esthetic features when active. Effective therapies are needed. This study aimed to compare photodynamic therapy (PDT), Topical Acyclovir (AC), and the association of both in the healing process and self-reported symptomologies of HSV-1 recurrences. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned into 3 groups (n = 25): PDT (low-power laser, 660 nm, 40 mW, 120 J/cm2, 4.8 J, 120 s per point) and methylene blue (0.005 %) as photosensitizer; AC (5%); PDT + AC.Data concerning lesion size, healing time, and self-reported healing parameters, such as pain, tingling, and edema were taken every day up to complete healing for all studied groups. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in healing time and pain between groups. AC group showed a significant minor reduction of the lesion compared to the AC-PDT group on day 1. Regarding edema and tingling, the comparison of treatments showed a statistical difference only on day 1, where PDT showed better results. CONCLUSION: With all the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that only on day 1 PDT showed positive effects in the treatment of herpes lesions in comparison to AC.

OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated the effects of in vitro and in-vivo radiotherapy on endogenous enzymatic activity in dentin using gelatin zymography and in-situ zymography. METHODS: Gelatin zymographic assays were performed on protein extracts obtained from dentin powder of sound non-irradiated (NRT), in vitro irradiated (VTRT) and in vivo irradiated (VIRT) human teeth. Their proteolytic activities were quantified using band densitometric evaluation. For in-situ zymography, dentin specimens from NRT, VIRT and VTRT were covered with fluorescein-conjugated gelatin and examined with confocal laser-scanning microscopy. Fluorescence intensity emitted by the hydrolyzed fluorescein-conjugated gelatin was quantified and statistically analyzed. In-situ zymography data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA and Dunn's multiple comparison procedures (α = 0.05). RESULTS: No difference between in vitro and in vivo radiotherapy treatment was found. Both VTRT and VIRT groups showed increase in MMP-9 expression when compared to NRT group. Significant increases (p < 0.05) in gelatinolytic activity (26 % for VTRT; 55 % for VIRT) were observed when compared to the NRT group. CONCLUSION: Radiotherapy increase endogenous enzymatic activity in non-restored dentin.

Increasing concerns about climate change and global warming bring about technical steps for the development of several energy-efficient technologies. Since the building sector is one of the largest energy users for cooling and heating necessities, the incorporation of a proper energy-efficient material into the building envelopes could be an interesting solution for saving energy. Phase change material (PCM)-based thermal energy storage (TES) seems suitable to provide efficient energy redistribution. This is possible because the PCM is able to store and release its latent heat during the phase change processes that occurs according to the environmental temperature. The purpose of this paper was the characterization of the thermal properties of a composite PCM (i.e., Lecce stone/poly-ethylene glycol, previously developed) incorporated into mortar compositions based on different binders (i.e., hydraulic lime and cement). The study was carried out using an experimental set up through which it was possible to simulate the different seasons of the years. It was observed that the addition of PCM in mortars leads to a decrease of the maximum temperatures and increase of the minimum temperatures. Furthermore, the results shown a reduction of the heating and cooling needs, thus confirming the capability of this material to save energy.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of 0.1% chitosan (Ch) solution as an additional primer on the mechanical durability and enzymatic activity on dentine using an etch-and-rinse (E&R) adhesive and a universal self-etch (SE) adhesive. Microtensile bond strength and interfacial nanoleakage expression of the bonded interfaces for all adhesives (with or without pretreatment with 0.1% Ch solution for 1 min and air-dried for 5 seconds) were analyzed immediately and after 10,000 thermocycles. Zymograms of protein extracts from human dentine powder incubated with Optibond FL and Scotchbond Universal on untreated or Ch-treated dentine were obtained to examine dentine matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activities. The use of 0.1% Ch solution as an additional primer in conjunction with the E&R or SE adhesive did not appear to have influenced the immediate bond strength (T0) or bond strength after thermocycling (T1). Zymography showed a reduction in MMP activities only for mineralized and demineralized dentine powder after the application of Ch. Application of 0.1% Ch solution does not increase the longevity of resin-dentine bonds. Nonetheless, the procedure appears to be proficient in reducing dentine MMP activities within groups without adhesive treatments. Further studies are required to comprehend the cross-linking of Ch with dentine collagen.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the ability of a chlorhexidine (CHX)-containing primer (0.2% aqueous solution) to inhibit dentinal enzymes, preserve the hybrid layer (HL) and remain within the HL, after 10 years of aging in artificial saliva at 37°C. METHODS: Non-carious extracted molars were assigned to two groups, cut into slabs exposing middle/deep dentin, etched and bonded with Adper Scotchbond 1XT (SB1XT) with or without 0.2% CHX aqueous solution pretreatment. Composite build-ups were made, and the specimens were cut in 1-mm thick bonded sticks. In situ zymography was performed on freshly prepared specimens (T0) and specimens aged for 10 years (T10-yr) at 37°C in artificial saliva, to investigate endogenous gelatinolytic activity within the HL. At T10-yr, specimens were also decalcified and embedded in epoxy resin for TEM analysis. Micro-Raman spectroscopy was performed at T0 and T10-yr to evaluate the chemical profiles in intertubular dentin and the HL. RESULTS: In situ zymography showed less pronounced enzymatic activity in the CHX-pretreated group (p<0.05) regardless of aging, maintaining a similar level of fluorescence at T0 and T10-yr (p>0.05). TEM results showed that 98% of the HL had been degraded in the control group, while 95% of the HL was intact in the experimental group. Moreover, all the Raman spectra peaks assigned to CHX could be identified only in the CHX-pretreated group (T0 and T10-yr). SIGNIFICANCE: In vitro, CHX remains in the HL after 10 years with its inhibitory effect preserved. This may be the underlying factor for HL preservation after this long aging period.

In-office dental bleaching allows the dentist to have greater control of the procedure and prevents patients from ingesting chemicals. To obtain optimum results, in-office bleaching usually requires a longer period of application as well as changes of the bleaching agent applied to the tooth surfaces at each appointment. The objective of this case report was to assess, by means of a split-mouth design in a single patient, the final tooth color and tooth sensitivity resulting from 2 different bleaching protocols: 1 application of 35% hydrogen peroxide for 45 minutes and 3 applications of 35% hydrogen peroxide for 15 minutes each. Neither the patient nor 5 individuals who were blinded to the techniques noted a difference in the final esthetic results of the 2 protocols immediately after the procedure. In addition, the patient reported that no tooth sensitivity was associated with either protocol. The results of dental bleaching on both sides were maintained after 15 days. The results shown in the present case report suggest that there may be no need to renew the gel during in-office dental bleaching.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study evaluated at baseline (T0) and over time (T12 months), the effect of a multi-mode universal adhesive compared with two experimental formulations blended with different concentrations of benzalkonium chloride (BAC), on bond strength and endogenous enzymatic activity. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Specimens were assigned to the following groups according to the adhesive protocol: G1) All-Bond Universal (ABU) self-etch (SE); G2) ABU + 0.5% BAC SE; G3) ABU + 1% methacrylate BAC SE; G4) ABU etch-and-rinse (E&R); G5) ABU + 0.5% BAC E&R; G6) ABU + 1% methacrylate BAC E&R. Gelatin zymography was performed on dentin powder obtained from eight human third molars. Endogenous enzymatic activity within the hybrid layer was examined using in situ zymography after 24 h (T0) or 1-year storage in artificial saliva (T12). Forty intact molars were prepared for microtensile bond strength test at T0 and T12. Results were statistically analyzed with three-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Gelatin zymography assay and in situ zymography quantification analyses indicated that all the BAC-containing formulations decreased matrix metalloproteinase expression. However, in situ zymography showed a general trend of enzymatic activity increase after aging. Microtensile bond-strength testing showed decrease in bond strength over time in all the tested groups; performances of the 1% methacrylate BAC experimental groups were worse than the control. CONCLUSIONS: BAC-containing adhesives reduce endogenous enzymatic activity both immediately and over time. However, independently from the adhesive employed, increase in the gelatinolytic activity over time and decrease in bond strength was found (especially in the BAC + 1% methacrylate groups), probably due to impaired polymerization properties. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Adhesives containing protease inhibitors are practical and efficient tools in clinical practice for enhancement of the longevity of dental restorations. However, extensive investigation of the mechanical and adhesive properties of the material is necessary prior to their clinical use.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate, by the means of microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test, gelatin and in situ zymography, the influence of 0.2% CHX contained within a commercially available adhesive on long-term bond strength and endogenous enzymatic activity. METHODS: Non-carious teeth were subjected to µTBS test (N = 15 for each group) and stressed until failure. µTBS was evaluated immediately and after 12-month storage in artificial saliva at 37 °C. Dentin powder was obtained from additional teeth (N = 7) for gelatin zymography, while for in situ zymography, 3 teeth for each group were selected. Gelatin and in situ zymography were performed in dentin powder and slices of dentin, respectively, to assess the ability of 0.2% CHX blended within the adhesive to inhibit endogenous enzymatic activity. RESULTS: µTBS bond strength was higher in the CHX-containing groups, immediately as well as after aging. The bond strength significantly decreased after 12-month aging. The activation of endogenous MMPs was found to be related to the presence of CHX within the adhesive system and the bonding strategy employed. CONCLUSIONS: Under this perspective 0.2% CHX blended within Peak Universal adhesive monomer seems to increase immediate bond strength, to preserve bond strength over time and to efficiently inhibit endogenous enzymatic activity in dentin. Hence, blending the CHX in low concentrations within the adhesive could be recommended as a feasible technique in every-day clinical practice. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Using CHX-containing adhesives could be recommended due to several benefits: it seems to increase the longevity of the hybrid layer; the inhibitor appears to be efficiently delivered to the dentinal substrate and to inhibit endogenous enzymatic activity, without prolonging chair time.

OBJECTIVES: The present in vitro study evaluated the effect of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), a cross-linking agent used as an additional therapeutic primer for luting fiber posts to radicular dentine to prevent hybrid layer degradation. METHODS: Root canal treatment was performed on 80 extracted single-rooted human teeth. A 10-mm post space was prepared and pecimens were randomly assigned to four groups (n=20) according to the bonding system: 1) All Bond 3 (Bisco); 2) All Bond 3 + 0.3M EDC; 3) Prime&Bond XP (Dentsply Sirona); 4) Prime&Bond XP + 0.3M EDC. In groups 2 and 4, EDC was applied on phosphoric acid-etched dentine for 1 min. Fiber posts (RelyX Fiber Post, 3M ESPE) were luted with a dual-cured resin cement (Core-X flow, Dentsply Sirona). Slices were prepared for micro push-out test and interfacial nanoleakage evaluation of the coronal and apical region of the canal space after 24 h and 1 year storage in artificial saliva. In-situ zymography was performed to investigate endogenous matrix metalloproteinase activities within the hybrid layer. Results were statistically analysed with three-way ANOVA test or Chi Square test. Statistical significance was set at α=0.05. RESULTS: No significant influence was identified between the two adhesives. The use of EDC significantly improved fiber post bond strength at 1 year but not at 24 h. Application of 0.3 M EDC prior to bonding significantly reduced gelatinolytic activities within the radicular hybrid layers. CONCLUSIONS: Carbodiimide was effective in preserving fibre post bond strength over time, through reducing the activities of intra-radicular endogenous proteases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases using EDC over radicular dentin could play an important role in bond strength preservation. However, the clinical relevance of these findings needs to be proven.
