RESUMEN

Piezocatalysis has emerged as a sustainable alternative for hydrogen peroxide production. However, the current development of efficient piezocatalysts is predominantly focusing on those conventional piezoelectric ceramic oxides with high permittivity and limited catalytic activities. Therefore, innovative approaches to develop novel piezocatalysts in particular from these outstanding paraelectric semiconductors are highly required. In this work, by employing a feasible doping strategy, robust piezoelectric property is created on the Ba2Nb2-xFexO6-δ double perovskite oxides, typically characterized by a stable paraelectric cubic structure. Optimum Fe doping not only intensifies the double perovskite phase but also inspires a phase transition from a centrosymmetric cubic to a piezoelectric tetragonal phase, thereby achieving desirable piezoelectricity and enabling a series of favorable physical properties including redox activity, active sites of anion defects, reduced bandgap, and increased free charge density. All these are important factors to enhance piezocatalytic activity. As a result, Ba2NbFeO6-δ achieved by the optimum Fe doping demonstrated exceptional piezocatalytic H2O2 yield of 512 and 690 µmol g-1 h-1 under atmosphere and oxygen-purging conditions, respectively, without the presence of any sacrificial agents. Mechanistic investigations reveal that both water oxidation and oxygen reduction involve in the H2O2 production, wherein piezopotential plays a critical role not only in facilitating the charge carrier separation and transportation but also in modulating the band structure to enhance the catalyst redox capacity. This study offers a feasible and universal strategy for the design of novel piezocatalysts, expanding the windows for catalyst selection for piezocatalysis.

Two novel actinobacteria, designated as SYSU M7M538T and SYSU M7M531, were isolated from oral of Eumetopias jubatus in Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, China. The cells of these microorganisms stained Gram-positive and were rod shaped. These strains were facultative anaerobic, and catalase-positive. Optimal growth occurred at 37 °C and pH 7.0 over 7 days of cultivation. Both strains possessed diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphocholine as the major polar lipids. The main menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The major fatty acids were C16:0, C17:1w8c, C17:0, C18:1w9c and C18:0. Analyses of genome sequences revealed that the genome size of SYSU M7M538T was 2.1 Mbp with G + C content of 52.5 %, while the genome size of SYSU M7M531 was 2.3 Mbp with G + C content of 52.7 %. The ANI and 16S rRNA gene analysis results showed that the pairwise similarities between the two strains and other recognized Nitriliruptoria species were less than 64.9 % and 89.0 %, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strains SYSU M7M538T and SYSU M7M531 formed a well-separated phylogenetic branch distinct from other orders of Nitriliruptoria. Based on the data presented here, these two strains are considered to represent a novel species of a novel genus, for which the name Stomatohabitans albus gen. nov., sp. nov., with the type strain SYSU M7M538T (=KCTC 59113T = GDMCC 1.4286T), are proposed. We also propose that these organisms represent a novel family named Stomatohabitantaceae fam. nov. of a novel order Stomatohabitantales ord. nov.

The Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis) living in different environments display significant differences in behavior and physiology. To compare and analyze gene expression differences between an ex situ population and a controlled environment population of the Yangtze finless porpoise, we sequenced the transcriptome of blood tissues living in a semi-natural reserve and an artificial facility, respectively. We identified 6860 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), of which 6603 were up-regulated and 257 were down-regulated in the controlled environment vs ex situ comparison. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis showed that the up-regulated genes in the controlled environment population were significantly associated with glucose metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and the nervous system, while those up-regulated in the ex situ population were significantly associated with energy supply and biosynthesis. Further analysis showed that metabolic and hearing-related genes were significantly affected by changes in the environment, and key metabolic genes such as HK, PFK, IDH, and GLS and key hearing-related genes such as OTOA, OTOF, SLC38A1, and GABBR2 were identified. These results suggest that the controlled environment population may have enhanced glucose metabolic ability via activation of glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, the TCA cycle, and inositol phosphate metabolism, while the ex situ population may meet higher energy requirements via enhancement of the amino acid metabolism of the liver and muscle and oxidative phosphorylation. Additionally, the acoustic behavior and auditory-related genes of Yangtze finless porpoise may show responsive changes and differential expression under different environment conditions, and thus the auditory sensitivity may also show corresponding adaptive characteristics. This study provides a new perspective for further exploration of the responsive changes of the two populations to various environments and provides a theoretical reference for further improvements in conservation practices for the Yangtze finless porpoise.

The orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) is a high economic value aquacultural fish in China, however, it often suffers from the outbreak of parasitic ciliate Cryptocaryon irritans as well as bacterium Vibrio harveyi which bring great loss in grouper farming. In the present study, we established a high dose C. irritans local-infected model which caused the mortality of groupers which showed low vitality and histopathological analysis demonstrated inflammatory response and degeneration in infected skin, gill and liver. In addition, gene expression of inflammatory cytokines was detected to assist the estimate of inflammatory response. Furthermore, we also found that the activity of Na+/K+ ATPase in gill was decreased in groupers infected C. irritans and the concentration of Na+/Cl- in blood were varied. Base on the morbidity symptom occurring in noninfected organs, we hypothesized that the result of morbidity and mortality were due to secondary bacterial infection post parasitism of C. irritans. Moreover, four strains of bacteria were isolated from the infected site skin and liver of local-infected groupers which were identified as V. harveyi in accordance of phenotypic traits, biochemical characterization and molecular analysis of 16S rDNA genes, housekeeping genes (gyrB and cpn60) and species-specific gene Vhhp2. Regression tests of injecting the isolated strain V. harveyi has showed high pathogenicity to groupers. In conclusion, these findings provide the evidence of coinfections with C. irritans and V. harveyi in orange-spotted grouper.

A captive adult male giant panda (Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park, CHINA) presented with azoospermia and enlarged left testicle. A tentative diagnosis of testicular neoplasia was made, and confirmed as testicular seminoma cases by testicular ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), testicular biopsy, and tumor marker examination findings. Based on the diagnostic results, the treatment of choice was surgical resection of the testicular tumor under general anesthesia. And the histopathological findings of the excised neoplasm were consistent with those of testicular seminoma. In addition, no tumor recurrence was observed after surgery, which indicates that our surgical and post-operative treatments were effective. The surgical treatment adopted in this case report is safe for patients and provides the best solution for the diagnosis and treatment of giant panda testicular seminoma. To our knowledge this is the first detailed report of surgical resection of testicular seminoma in the giant panda.

Shift of ingestive behavior is an important strategy for animals to adapt to change of the environment. We knew that shifts in animal dietary habits lead to changes in the structure of the gut microbiota, but we are not sure about if changes in the composition and function of the gut microbiota respond to changes in the nutrient intake or food items. To investigate how animal feeding strategies affect nutrient intakes and thus alter the composition and digestion function of gut microbiota, we selected a group of wild primate group for the study. We quantified their diet and macronutrients intake in four seasons of a year, and instant fecal samples were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and metagenomics. These results demonstrated that the main reason that causes seasonal shifts of gut microbiota is the macronutrient variation induced by seasonal dietary differences. Gut microbes can help to compensate for insufficient macronutrients intake of the host through microbial metabolic functions. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the causes of seasonal variation in host-microbial variation in wild primates.

Gut microbiota is one of the major elements in the control of host health. However, the composition of gut microbiota in koalas has rarely been investigated. Here, we performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing to determine the individual and environmental determinants of gut microbiota diversity and function in 35 fecal samples collected from captive koalas. Meanwhile, blood immune-related cytokine levels were examined by quantitative reverse transcription-PCR to initially explore the relationship between the gut microbiota and the immune system in koalas. The relative abundance of many bacteria, such as Lonepinella koalarum, varies at different ages in koalas and decreases with age. Conversely, Ruminococcus flavefaciens increases with age. Moreover, bacterial pathways involved in lipid metabolism, the biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites, and infectious disease show a significant correlation with age. Age affects the relationship between the microbiota and the host immune system. Among them, the gut microbiota of subadult and aged koalas was closely correlated with CD8ß and CD4, whereas adult koalas were correlated with CLEC4E. We also found that sex, reproductive status, and living environment have little impact on the koala gut microbiota and immune system. These results shed suggest age is a key factor affecting gut microbiota and immunity in captive koalas and thus provide new insight into its role in host development and the host immune system. IMPORTANCE Although we have a preliminary understanding of the gut microbiota of koalas, we lack insight into which factors potentially impact captive koalas. This study creates the largest koala gut microbiota data set in China to date and describes several factors that may affect gut microbiota and the immune system in captive koalas, highlighting that age may be a key factor affecting captive koalas. Moreover, this study is the first to characterize the correlation between gut microbiota and cytokines in koalas. Better treatment strategies for infectious disorders may be possible if we can better understand the interactions between the immune system and the microbiota.

Glycome in urine could be promising biomarkers for detecting pregnancy diagnosis and sex noninvasively for animals, especially for rare species. We explore the applicability of grouping golden snub-nosed monkeys by sex or diagnosing pregnancy based on their urinary glycopatterns, which are determined via lectin microarray combining mass spectrometry analysis. Sprague-Dawley rats are used to verify whether this approach and whether the glycomic biomarkers can be generalized to other mammalian species. The results show that, for both species, lectin microarray combining mass spectrometry can distinguish individuals' pregnancy status and sex; significant differences are found in the types, amounts, and terminal modification of glycans between pregnant and non-pregnant females and between females and males. This indicates the approach could be generalized to other mammalian species to group sex and detect pregnancy, yet the glycopatterns appear to be species-specific and markers developed from one species may not be directly applicable to another.

The white tiger, an elusive Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) variant with white fur and dark stripes, has fascinated humans for centuries ever since its discovery in the jungles of India. Many white tigers in captivity are inbred in order to maintain this autosomal recessive trait and consequently suffer some health problems, leading to the controversial speculation that the white tiger mutation is perhaps a genetic defect. However, the genetic basis of this phenotype remains unknown. Here, we conducted genome-wide association mapping with restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq) in a pedigree of 16 captive tigers segregating at the putative white locus, followed by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of the three parents. Validation in 130 unrelated tigers identified the causative mutation to be an amino acid change (A477V) in the transporter protein SLC45A2. Three-dimensional homology modeling suggests that the substitution may partially block the transporter channel cavity and thus affect melanogenesis. We demonstrate the feasibility of combining RAD-seq and WGS to rapidly map exotic variants in nonmodel organisms. Our results identify the basis of the longstanding white tiger mystery as the same gene underlying color variation in human, horse, and chicken and highlight its significance as part of the species' natural polymorphism that is viable in the wild.
