RESUMEN

In this study, the copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) bimetallic electrocatalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction(CO2RR) are fabricated by taking the finely designed poly(ionic liquids) (PIL) containing abundant Salen and imidazolium chelating sites as the surficial layer, wherein Cu-Ni, PIL-Cu and PIL-Ni interaction can be readily regulated by different synthetic scheme. As a proof of concept, Cu@Salen-PIL@Ni(NO3)2 and Cu@Salen-PIL(Ni) hybrids differ significantly in the types and distribution of Ni species and Cu species at the surface, thereby delivering distinct Cu-Ni cooperation fashion for the CO2RR. Remarkably, Cu@Salen-PIL@Ni(NO3)2 provides a C2+ faradaic efficiency (FEC2+) of 80.9% with partial current density (jC 2+) of 262.9 mA cm-2 at -0.80 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) in 1 m KOH in a flow cell, while Cu@Salen-PIL(Ni) delivers the optimal FEC2+ of 63.8% at jC2+ of 146.7 mA cm-2 at -0.78 V. Mechanistic studies indicates that the presence of Cu-Ni interfaces in Cu@Salen-PIL@Ni(NO3)2 accounts for the preserve of high-valence Cu(I) species under CO2RR conditions. It results in a high activity of both CO2-to-CO conversion and C-C coupling while inhibition of the competitive HER.

BACKGROUND: Many children experience serious symptoms when they are diagnosed with and treated for cancer. Through appropriate parent-child communication, parents were able to identify children's physical and psychological problems, adjust their behavior, and help them cope with the disease. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically search for and integrate evidence from qualitative studies on communication between parents and children with nonterminal cancer from parents' perspectives. METHODS: A thorough systematic review and metasynthesis of qualitative studies were conducted. Articles were searched from PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and PsycArticles from the database inception to November 6, 2022. After screening and quality appraisal, 14 articles were finally included in the metasynthesis. RESULTS: Three themes and 11 subthemes were identified: (1) communication content, including diagnosis, treatment, health management, health risk, and emotion; (2) factors influencing communication, including ages of children, parents' experience of communication, parents' awareness of protection, and culture; and (3) children's responses, including acceptance and resistance. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review found that parents were influenced by various factors during the decision-making process of parent-child communication about childhood cancer and its related issues. Parents tended to adjust their communication content and style to protect their children. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Future research should be conducted to explore children's experiences of communicating with their parents and analyze the similarities and differences between the communication needs of parents and children. Healthcare professionals should provide professional communication guidance to facilitate the parent-child relationship and improve the mental health of both children and their parents.

It is evident that sarcasm can be interpreted differently due to various factors, However, rare research was conducted to investigate the influence of national culture on sarcasm comprehension despite its valuable theoretical implication. This study used an online rating task to explore how national culture impacts the comprehension of sarcasm, focusing on the differences between Chinese and American cultural values (i.e., power distance, uncertainty avoidance, collectivism, long-term orientation, and masculinity) and their influence on comprehending sarcastic praise and criticism. The study showed that Chinese participants tend to understand sarcasm less than Americans. It also found that Power Distance is linked to better sarcasm comprehension in both cultures, while Uncertainty Avoidance has a negative effect on it, especially in Chinese participants. Collectivism is also associated with improved sarcasm comprehension, especially in Chinese participants. However, Masculinity and Long-Term Orientation do not seem to have a significant impact on sarcasm comprehension, regardless of nationality or the type of comment (praise or criticism). Overall, the study reveals nuanced differences in how cultural values shape the comprehension of sarcasm in Chinese and American contexts, underscoring the complex interplay between culture and communication.

RESUMEN

The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO with high efficiency is one of the most promising approaches for CO2 conversion due to its considerable economic feasibility and broad application prospects. In this study, three Ag@COF-R (R = -H, -OCH3, -OH) hybrids were facilely fabricated by impregnating silver acetate (AgOAc) into respective covalent organic frameworks (COFs) prepared in advance. They differ significantly in the crystallinity, porosity, distribution, size, and electronic configuration of AgOAc species, which thereby influences both the activity and the selectivity of electrolytic CO2-to-CO transformation. Impressively, Ag@COF-OCH3 provided a high FECO of 93.0% with a high jCO of 213.9 mA cm-2 at -0.87 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) in 1 M KOH using a flow cell. In addition, it exhibited long-term durability at 100 mA cm-2 for 30 h.

Inculcating the capacity to adapt successfully to failures is essential for talent development in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Despite its importance, this capacity to learn from failure is among the least understood processes in the field of talent development. This study aims to investigate how students conceptualize and react to failures and whether there is a correlation between students' conceptualizations of failure, emotional reactions to it, and academic performance. We invited 150 high-achieving high school students to share, interpret, and label their most memorable struggles in their STEM classes. Most of their struggles focused on the learning process itself, such as poor understanding of the subject matter, insufficient motivation or effort, or adopting ineffective learning strategies. Poor performance outcomes, such as poor test scores and bad grades, were not mentioned as frequently as the learning process. Students who labeled their struggle experiences as failures tended to focus more on performance outcomes, whereas students who labeled their struggle experiences as neither failures nor successes focused more on the learning process. Higher-achieving students were also less likely to label their struggles as failures than less-high achievers. Implications for classroom instruction are discussed with a particular focus on talent development in STEM fields.

The Pd(cod)Cl2-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation of conjugated dienes to ß,γ-unsaturated esters was approached by both intramolecular phosphinesulfonate L1 and intermolecular PPh3/PTSA in this study. However, the poor solubility of the Pd/L1 complex and the labile monodentate Pd/PPh3 structure restricts the system efficiency, especially for the scale-up application. By contrast, the stable and well-soluble bidentate Xantphos system allows for the quantitative formation of 3-pentenoate (96%) on a gram scale within 6 h in weakly alkaline N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), which also functions as a basic site to promote the rate-limiting alcoholysis step while reducing the dosage of ligand to a theoretical value.

We investigated the effects of serum estrogen levels before frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer on pregnancy outcomes in hormone replacement cycles. Clinical data of 708 hormone replacement cycles with frozen-thawed blastocyst were retrospectively analyzed. According to quartile (P25) of serum estrogen levels on the endometrium transformation day, the 708 cycles were divided into group A1 (E2 < 157.5 pg/ml), group A2 (157.5 pg/ml ≤ E2 < 206.4 pg/ml), group A3 (206.4 pg/ml ≤ E2 < 302.3 pg/ml) and group A4 (E2 ≥ 302.3 pg/ml). According to quartile (P25) of serum estrogen levels on the frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer day, the 708 cycles were divided into group B1 (E2 < 147 pg/ml), group B2 (147 pg/ml ≤ E2 < 200.4 pg/ml), group B3 (200.4 pg/ml ≤ E2 < 323 pg/ml) and group B4 (E2 ≥ 323 pg/ml). According to different clinical outcomes, the 708 cycles were divided into clinical pregnant group and non-clinical pregnant group. The group A4 (E2 ≥ 302.3 pg/ml on the endometrium transformation day) was significantly lower than other groups in blastocyst implantation rate and multiple-pregnancy rate (P < 0.05). The days of taking progynova was significantly different among groups on both endometrium transformation day and frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer day (P < 0.05), but there were no statistical differences in the mean age, endometrial thickness and number of high-quality blastocysts transferred among groups (P > 0.05). The mean age was significantly younger and the number of high-quality blastocysts transferred was significantly higher in the clinical pregnant group than in the non-clinical pregnant group (P < 0.05), but endometrial thickness, days of taking progynova, progesterone level on the blastocyst transfer day, and E2 level were not significantly different between both groups (P > 0.05). Multivariate regression analysis indicated that age was an independent factor affecting clinical pregnancy (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis displayed that the serum estrogen levels did not affect clinical pregnancy (P > 0.05). The days of taking progynova and serum estrogen levels before frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer do not affect pregnancy outcomes in hormone replacement cycles.

BACKGROUND: Novel nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) are noted for their potential cardiorenal benefits for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney diseases; however, the effect of this regimen on renal outcomes remains uncertain. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of nonsteroidal MRAs focusing primarily on renal outcomes and safety in randomized, controlled trials. The MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases were systemically searched for trials published through April 2022. We included randomized, controlled trials assessing the effects of nonsteroidal MRAs on renal outcomes, as well as cardiovascular disease (CVD) effects in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Summary estimates of risk ratios (RRs) reductions were calculated with a random-effects model. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to evaluate the certainty of evidence. This study is registered with PROSPERO under number CRD42022335464. FINDINGS: In total, 11 trials and 1 pooled analysis including a total of 17,517 participants were enrolled. Nonsteroidal MRAs reduced renal composite endpoints by 17 % [HR = 0.83, 95 % (0.75, 0.91); low quality] with 16 % in kidney failure (high quality), 23 % in ESRD (high quality), 20 % in eGFR decreased to less than 15 mL/min/1.73 m2 (high quality), and 17 % with more than a 40 % decrease in eGFR (high quality); 14 % with cardiovascular composite endpoints [HR = 0.86, 95 % (0.78, 0.94); moderate quality]; and 13 % of all-cause mortality [HR = 0.87, 95 % (0.76, 0.98); moderate quality]. Nonsteroidal MRAs were also associated with additional benefits in lowering UACR levels (moderate quality) and lowering BP levels (moderate quality) compared with the control groups. However, nonsteroidal MRAs did not show a statistically significant effect on the risk of renal death (moderate quality), hospitalization for any cause (moderate quality) or change in GFR (low quality). Regarding safety, there was no significant difference in the risk of adverse events between the participants receiving nonsteroidal MRAs and the control group. INTERPRETATION: Nonsteroidal MRAs had a statistically beneficial effect on reducing the risk of the composite kidney outcome, the composite of cardiovascular outcomes, and all-cause mortality. Nonsteroidal MRAs were also associated with benefits of proteinuria remission and blood pressure lowering. Although these findings provided positive evidence for the use of nonsteroidal MRAs for cardiorenal protection in patients with or without CKD, the quality of this evidence is potentially uncertain.

Bacterial wilt, caused by the plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum, occurs more severely in acidified soil according to previous reports. However, R. solanacearum cannot grow well in acidic environments under barren nutrient culture conditions, especially when the pH is lower than 5. With the worsening acidification of farmland, further determination of how R. solanacearum adapts to the long-term acidic environment is worthwhile. In this study, experimental evolution was applied to evaluate the adaptability and mechanism of the R. solanacearum experimental population responding to long-term acid stress. We chose the CQPS-1 strain as the ancestor, and minimal medium (MM medium) with different pH values as the culture environment to simulate poor soil. After 1500 generations of serial passage experiments in pH 4.9 MM, acid-adapted experimental strains (denoted as C49 strains) were obtained, showing significantly higher growth rates than the growth rates of control experimental strains (serial passage experiment in pH 6.5 MM, denoted as C65 strains). Competition experiments showed that the competitive indices (CIs) of all selected clones from C49 strains were superior to the ancestor in acidic environment competitiveness. Based on the genome variation analysis and functional verification, we confirmed that loss of function in the phcA gene was associated with the acid fitness gain of R. solanacearum, which meant that the inactivation of the PhcA regulator caused by gene mutation mediated the population expansion of R. solanacearum when growing in an acidic stress environment. Moreover, the swimming motility of acid evolution strains and the phcA deletion mutant was significantly enhanced compared to CQPS-1. This work provided evidence for understanding the adaptive strategy of R. solanacearum to the long-term acidic environment.

In this study, the covalent bonding of linear poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) with covalent organic frameworks (COFs) was accessed by copolymerization of a vinyl-decorated COF with 4-vinylbenzyl chloride, followed by quaternization with tertiary amines. The resultant PIL-COF composite by anchoring a proper content of vinyl sites on the COF-based comonomer retains the crystallinity and porosity, thereby facilitating access of the reactants to the catalytic active sites. As a proof of concept, the dehydrative transformation of sorbitol into isosorbide was selected as a benchmark reaction, whose rate improved significantly in the presence of PIL-COF-0.33 compared with those of individual components and the mesoporous PIL counterpart due to uniform pore sizes and flexible linear catalytic chains. In addition, the hybrids bearing a chemical cross-linkage between PILs and COFs are robust, and PIL-COF-0.33 can be recovered and reused for 10 runs without significant reactivity loss. These findings provide the basis for a novel design concept for achieving both efficient and stable IL catalysis.

The combination of tris(pyrazolyl)borate cobalt complexes and Lewis base is developed as an efficient catalyst precursor in the homogeneous hydrogenation. A broad substrate scope including carbonyls, alkenes, enamines, and imines is reduced with 60 atm of H2 at 60 °C. Mechanistic studies support the hydrogenation operates through a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP)-like reduction process. These results highlight the development of novel non-noble metal catalytic processes, when combined with the diverse small molecule activation chemistry associated with FLPs.
