Modelling human diseases serves as a crucial tool to unveil underlying mechanisms and pathophysiology. Takotsubo syndrome (TS), an acute form of heart failure resembling myocardial infarction, manifests with reversible regional wall motion abnormalities (RWMA) of the ventricles. Despite its mortality and clinical similarity to myocardial infarction, TS aetiology remains elusive, with stress and catecholamines playing central roles. This review delves into current animal models of TS, aiming to assess their ability to replicate key clinical traits and identifying limitations. An in-depth evaluation of published animal models reveals a variation in the definition of TS among studies. We notice a substantial prevalence of catecholamine-induced models, particularly in rodents. While these models shed light on TS, there remains potential for refinement. Translational success in TS research hinges on models that align with human TS features and exhibit the key features, including transient RWMA. Animal models should be comprehensively evaluated regarding the various systemic changes of the applied trigger(s) for a proper interpretation. This review acts as a guide for researchers, advocating for stringent TS model standards and enhancing translational validity.

Background and aims: Ischemic preconditioning (IPC), i.e., brief periods of ischemia, protect the heart from subsequent prolonged ischemic injury, and reduces infarction size. Myocardial stunning refers to transient loss of contractility in the heart after myocardial ischemia that recovers without permanent damage. The relationship between IPC and myocardial stunning remains incompletely understood. This study aimed primarily to examine the effects of IPC on the relationship between ischemia duration, stunning, and infarct size in an ischemia-reperfusion injury model. Secondarily, this study aimed to examine to which extent the phosphoproteomic changes induced by IPC relate to myocardial contractile function. Methods and results: Rats were subjected to different durations of left anterior descending artery (LAD) occlusion, with or without preceding IPC. Echocardiograms were acquired to assess cardiac contraction in the affected myocardial segment. Infarction size was evaluated using triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining. Phosphoproteomic analysis was performed in heart tissue from preconditioned and non-preconditioned animals. In contrast to rats without IPC, reversible akinesia was observed in a majority of the rats that were subjected to IPC and subsequently exposed to ischemia of 13.5 or 15 min of ischemia. Phosphoproteomic analysis revealed significant differential regulation of 786 phosphopeptides between IPC and non-IPC groups, with significant associations with the sarcomere, Z-disc, and actin binding. Conclusion: IPC induces changes in phosphosites of proteins involved in myocardial contraction; and both accentuates post-ischemic myocardial stunning and reduces infarct size.

Background & Aims: Spontaneous portosystemic shunts (SPSS) develop frequently in cirrhosis. Changes over time and the effect of aetiological interventions on SPSS are unknown, so we aimed to explore the effect of these variables on SPSS evolution. Methods: Patients with cirrhosis from the Baveno VI-SPSS cohort were selected provided a follow-up abdominal CT or MRI scan was available. Clinical and laboratory data were collected at baseline and follow-up. Imaging tests were reviewed to evaluate changes in the presence and size of SPSS (large (L)-SPSS was ≥8 mm) over time. Regarding alcohol- or HCV-related cirrhosis, two populations were defined: cured patients (abstinent from alcohol or successful HCV therapy), and non-cured patients. Results: A total of 617 patients were included. At baseline SPSS distribution was 22% L-SPSS, 30% small (S)-SPSS, and 48% without (W)-SPSS. During follow-up (median follow-up of 63 months), SPSS distribution worsened: L-SPSS 26%, S-SPSS 32%, and W-SPSS 42% (p <0.001). Patients with worse liver function during follow-up showed a simultaneous aggravation in SPSS distribution. Non-cured patients (n = 191) experienced a significant worsening in liver function, more episodes of liver decompensation and lower transplant-free survival compared to cured patients (n = 191). However, no differences were observed regarding SPSS distribution at inclusion and at follow-up, with both groups showing a trend to worsening. Total shunt diameter increased more in non-cured (52%) than in cured patients (28%). However, total shunt area (TSA) significantly increased only in non-cured patients (74 to 122 mm2, p <0.001). Conclusions: The presence of SPSS in cirrhosis increases over time and parallels liver function deterioration. Aetiological intervention in these patients reduces liver-related complications, but SPSS persist although progression is decreased. Impact and implications: There is no information regarding the evolution of spontaneous portosystemic shunts (SPSS) during the course of cirrhosis, and especially after disease regression with aetiological interventions, such as HCV treatment with direct-acting antivirals or alcohol abstinence. These results are relevant for clinicians dealing with patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension because they have important implications for the management of cirrhosis with SPSS after disease regression. From a practical point of view, physicians should be aware that in advanced cirrhosis with portal hypertension, after aetiological intervention, SPSS mostly persist despite liver function improvement, and complications related to SPSS may still develop.

Spirulina platensis, a microalga known for its exceptional nutritional value, especially its bioactive compounds and protein content, holds promise for incorporation into functional food products. Ricotta cheese whey is a byproduct of the production of ricotta cheese that is difficult to use in industries due to its low pH and less favorable processing qualities. This research aimed to create a unique fermented ricotta cheese whey-based beverage supplemented with various Spirulina powder concentrations (0.25 %, 0.5 %, and 0.75 % w/w) cooperated with a mixture of lemon and peppermint juice 10 % and fermented by probiotic (ABT) culture. The physicochemical, rheological, bioactive compounds, microbiological, and sensory properties were evaluated over a storage period of 21 days at cold storage. Spirulina-fermented whey-based beverages with a mixture of lemon and peppermint juice increased the concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and total phenolic compounds in the final product. The count of probiotic bacteria in all fermented beverage samples exceeded 7 log CFU/mL throughout storage, indicating that the fermented beverage kept its probiotic properties. The addition of 0.5 % Spirulina significantly improved the final product's structural qualities and sensory acceptance.

The white sapote tree is cultivated in Egypt on a limited scale owing to its dietary fruits. For its medical and functional characteristics, different levels of dried white sapote fruit (DWSF) were utilized in the manufacturing of probiotic goat yoghurt drinks as a milk fat replacer, as well as yoghurt cultures of Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 and Bifidobacterium bifidum Bb-11. The implications of DWSF on the rheological properties (apparent viscosity, flow behavior index, plastic viscosity, consistency coefficient, and yield stress), gross composition, color, sensory, bioactive, and microbiological properties of yoghurt drinks were studied throughout 15 days of storage at 4 °C. The addition of DWSF enhanced the bioactive compounds, water-holding capacity, sensory properties, rheological parameters, color, and bacterial growth. Furthermore, mold, yeast, and coliform were not found in any of the samples until the storage time was over. The total number of viable cells in probiotic treatments was kept at a functional level (>106 CFU/mL) for 15 days. The aggregate results showed that it is possible to generate high-quality bio-yoghurt drinks from goat milk with a delightful flavor, appearance, body & texture, and color by substituting goat milk fat with up to 75 % dried white sapote fruit. The successful creation of high-quality bio-yoghurt drinks from goat milk, enriched with DWSF, not only presents a delightful flavor, and pleasing texture but also signifies a health-conscious innovation. This research paves the way for further investigations into the integration of novel fruit-based ingredients in dairy products, offering new dimensions in the functional foods field.

Dietary selenium (Se) sources affects the structure of the rumen microbial community and rumen fermentation. This study evaluated the effects of sodium selenite (SS) and bio-nanostructured selenium (SeNSM) on rumen fermentation and structure of rumen microbial community of lactating Barki ewes. Twenty one lactating Barki ewes were assigned into three groups based on their body weight and milk yield. The experiment lasted for 50 days, whenever, the control group was fed basal diet; group SS received basal diets plus sodium selenite as inorganic source of Se; and group SeNSM received basal diet plus organic selenium bio-nanostructured. Ruminal pH and volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) was lower (P < 0.05) in SeNSM group compared to control. Principle Coordinate Analysis separated the microbial communities into three clusters based on feeding treatment. The bacterial community was dominated by phylum Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes that were affected (P < 0.05) by Se sources. Specifically Bacteriodetes was higher (P < 0.05) in SS and SeNSM groups; and Firmicutes was higher (P < 0.05) in the control group. Moreover, the predominant bacterial genera were Prevotella, Rikenellaceae RC9 gut group, Unclassified_Bacteroidales, which were higher (P < 0.05) in SeNSM group. The methanogenic community belonged to phylum Euryarchaeota and was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) by Se supplementation. Principal component analysis based on rumen fermentation parameters, and relative abundances of bacteria and methanogens revealed three distinct clusters. These findings suggest that Se supplementation affected the relative abundances of dominant bacterial groups, declined rumen methanogens and SeNSM supplementation showed some positive impacts on some fibrolytic bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is a major health problem that results in tooth loss and thus affects oral health, which affects quality of life. In particular, schizophrenic patients are at higher risk for periodontal disease due to several factors, including the effect of antipsychotic medications received by those patients. Accordingly, the aim of the present cohort retrospective study is to explore the effect of antipsychotics on periodontal health and the possible effect of antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia as a risk factor for periodontal disease progression in schizophrenic patients. METHODS AND OUTCOMES: The study population consisted of three groups: Group A (n = 21): schizophrenic patients that have been taking "prolactin-inducing" antipsychotics for at least 1 year; Group B (n = 21): schizophrenic patients who have been taking "prolactin-sparing" antipsychotics for at least 1 year; and Group C (n = 22): newly diagnosed schizophrenic patients and/or patients who did not receive any psychiatric treatment for at least 1 year. The study groups underwent assessment of periodontal conditions in terms of pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), gingival recession, tooth mobility, and bleeding on probing (BOP). Also, bone mineral density was evaluated using DEXA scans, and the serum prolactin level was measured by automated immunoassay. RESULTS: Results revealed a statistically significant difference in PD, CAL, and serum prolactin levels (P ≤ 0.001, P = 0.001, and P ≤ 0.001, respectively) among the 3 study groups. For both PD and CAL measurements, group A has shown significantly higher values than both groups B and C, whereas there was no statistically significant difference between the values of groups C and B. Concerning serum prolactin levels, group A had significantly higher values than groups B and C (P ≤ 0.001 and P ≤ 0.001 respectively). There was a statistically significant difference (P ≤ 0.001) between the 3 study groups in terms of bone mineral density. Moreover, there was a statistically significant direct relation between serum prolactin level and other parameters including clinical attachment loss, pocket depth measurements and bone mineral density. CONCLUSION: According to our results, it could be concluded that all antipsychotics contribute to the progression of periodontal disease, with a higher risk for prolactin-inducing antipsychotics. However, further long term, large sampled, interventional and controlled studies are required to reach definitive guidelines to allow clinicians properly manage this group of patients.

Background: Nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) is characterized by epiphora and recurrent episodes of acute dacryocystitis. Despite the temporary effect of antibiotics in the acute phase, it is primarily managed by dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). There is a new modification of external DCR that is performed without either anterior or posterior flaps. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of flapless and single-flap external DCR in adult patients with chronic symptomatic dacryocystitis secondary to NLDO. Methods: In this retrospective, non-randomized, interventional, comparative study of patients with chronic dacryocystitis secondary to primary acquired NLDO, we compared the surgical outcomes and complication rates of flapless external DCR to those of external DCR with only anterior flap suturing. We excluded patients who declined participation and those with soft stops, nasal problems, lid margin abnormalities, lid malposition or laxity, previous lacrimal surgery, lacrimal fistula, trauma involving the lacrimal drainage system, lack of adequate follow-up, or severe septal deviation or turbinate hypertrophy. Anatomical and functional success rates were determined at the last follow-up visit and were compared. Postoperative complications were recorded and compared between groups. Results: We included 53 patients with a male-to-female ratio of 16 (30.2%) to 37 (69.8%); 25 eyes underwent flapless DCR (group 1) and 28 eyes underwent anterior flap suturing DCR (group 2). The two groups had comparable demographic characteristics (all P > 0.05). Furthermore, anatomical (92.0% in group 1 and 92.9% in group 2) and functional (84.0% in group 1 and 92.9% in group 2) success rates at final follow-up were comparable between groups (both P > 0.05). At the one-month postoperative examination, premature tube extrusion was more often reported in group 1 (12.0%) compared to group 2 (7.1%). At the two-month follow-up examination, tube extrusion was noted in 4.0% in group 1 and 0.0% in group 2, yet the difference failed to attain statistical significance (P > 0.05). Conclusions: We found that neither surgical method was superior in terms of anatomical or functional success rate at a maximum of one year after external DCR. Flapless DCR is a simple, effective, and reproducible alternative to the single anterior flap suturing technique for managing NLDO in adults with chronic dacryocystitis. However, further randomized clinical trials with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are recommended before generalization can be justified.

AIMS: Cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and troponin I (cTnI) are expressed as an obligate 1:1 complex in the myocardium. However, blood levels of cTnI often rise much higher than that of cTnT in myocardial infarction (MI), whereas cTnT is often higher in patients with stable conditions such as atrial fibrillation. Here we examine high-sensitive (hs) cTnI and hs-cTnT after different durations of experimental cardiac ischaemia. METHODS AND RESULTS: hs-cTnI, hs-cTnT, and the hs-cTnT/hs-cTnI ratio were measured in plasma samples from rats before and at 30 and 120 min after 5, 10, 15, and 30 min of myocardial ischaemia. The animals were killed after 120 min of reperfusion, and the infarct volume and volume at risk were measured. hs-cTnI, hs-cTnT, and the hs-cTnT/hs-cTnI ratio were also measured in plasma samples collected from patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). hs-cTnT and hs-cTnI increased over 10-fold in all rats subjected to ischaemia. The increase of hs-cTnI and hs-cTnT after 30 min was similar, resulting in a hs-cTnI/hs-cTnT ratio around 1. The hs-cTnI/hs-cTnT ratio was also around 1 in blood samples collected at 120 min in rats subjected to 5 or 10 min of ischaemia where no localized necrosis was observed. In contrast, the hs-cTnI/hs-cTnT ratio at 2 h was 3.6-5.5 after longer ischaemia that induced cardiac necrosis. The large hs-cTnI/hs-cTnT ratio was confirmed in patients with anterior STEMI. CONCLUSION: Both hs-cTnI and hs-cTnT increased similarly after brief periods of ischaemia that did not cause overt necrosis, whereas the hs-cTnI/hs-cTnT ratio tended to increase following longer ischaemia that induced substantial necrosis. A low hs-cTnI/hs-cTnT ratio around 1 may signify non-necrotic cTn release.

Wilms' tumor, the most prevalent renal tumor in children, is known for its aggressive prognosis and recurrence. Treatment of Wilms' tumor is multimodal, including surgery, chemotherapy, and occasionally, radiation therapy. Preoperative chemotherapy is used routinely in European studies and in select indications in North American trials. The objective of this study was to build a novel computer-aided prediction system for preoperative chemotherapy response in Wilms' tumors. A total of 63 patients (age range: 6 months-14 years) were included in this study, after receiving their guardians' informed consent. We incorporated contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging to extract the texture, shape, and functionality-based features from Wilms' tumors before chemotherapy. The proposed system consists of six steps: (i) delineate the tumors' images across the three contrast phases; (ii) characterize the texture of the tumors using first- and second-order textural features; (iii) extract the shape features by applying a parametric spherical harmonics model, sphericity, and elongation; (iv) capture the intensity changes across the contrast phases to describe the tumors' functionality; (v) apply features fusion based on the extracted features; and (vi) determine the final prediction as responsive or non-responsive via a tuned support vector machine classifier. The system achieved an overall accuracy of 95.24%, with 95.65% sensitivity and 94.12% specificity. Using the support vector machine along with the integrated features led to superior results compared with other classification models. This study integrates novel imaging markers with a machine learning classification model to make early predictions about how a Wilms' tumor will respond to preoperative chemotherapy. This can lead to personalized management plans for Wilms' tumors.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this work is to assess progression of diabetic macular edema (DME) following intravitreal ranibizumab injection compared to subtenon triamcinolone acetonide injection at cataract operation. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 73 eyes of 65 participant with DME, with central macular thickness (CMT) ≥ 300 µm. The included eyes were separated into three groups; phacoemulsification with intravitreal Ranibizumab injection group, phacoemulsification with subtenon Triamcinolone acetonide injection group and phacoemulsification only group. Main measures involved best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) one week, one month and three months post-operative. The CMT was compared preoperative and postoperative (one and three months). RESULTS: After 1 month of operation, there was a statistical substantial distinction in the median of CMT between ranibizumab & control group (p < 0.001), between subtenon TA & control group (p < 0.001) and in ranibizumab and subtenon TA group (p = 0.023). After 3 months, the variance between ranibizumab & control group was considerable (p < 0.0001) and the variance between subtenon TA & control group was considerable (p = 0.030). CONCLUSIONS: Combined phacoemulsification with intravitreal injections of ranibizumab or subtenon triamcinolone acetonide may prevent further progression in CMT in individuals with DME following cataract operation.

The processing of faba beans generates great quantities of hulls, which are high in bioactive compounds with demonstrated radical-inhibiting properties. There is no research on the impact of using faba bean hull nanoparticles (FBH-NPs) to improve the quality and extend the shelf-life of beef products. Hence, the target of this investigation was to assess the inhibiting influence of adding FBH-NPs at two different concentrations (1 and 1.5%) on the physical attributes, lipid and protein oxidation, colour degradation, and microbiological safety of burgers during refrigerated storage (4 ± 1 °C/12 days). The FBH-NPs presented great phenolic content (103.14 ± 0.98 mg GAE/g dw) and antioxidant potential. The water holding capacity and cooking properties in burgers including FBH-NPs were improved during storage. The FBH-NPs significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the reduction rate of redness and lightness during the burger refrigerated storage and the FBH-NPs were more beneficial in preventing cold burger discolouration. In the FBH-NPs-treated burgers, peroxide values, TBARS, and protein carbonyl content were lower than in the control (up to 12 days). The microbiological load of burgers including FBH-NPs was lower than the load of the control during refrigerated storage. The findings revealed that FBH-NPs were more efficient in enhancing the cooking characteristics, retarding lipid or protein oxidation, preventing colour detrition and improving the microbial safety of burgers.

The aim of this paper is to study the effect of strain rate on the compressive behavior of the highly cross-linked RTM6 epoxy resin used in advanced aerospace composites. Dynamic compression tests were performed using a split Hopkinson pressure bar, along with reference quasi-static compression tests, to cover a strain rate range from 0.001 to 1035 s-1. Special attention was paid to the optimization of the test methodologies in order to obtain material data free of bias related to the use of different load introduction techniques and sample geometries over the considered strain rate range. In addition, the use of full-field 3D deformation measurements allowed the validation of traditional test and material assumptions. A novel self-alignment tool was developed to enable perfect interfacial contact during compression loading. The 3D digital image correlation technique was used to measure the instantaneous deformation of the sample during compression at different strain rates. Results showed a pronounced strain rate sensitivity of the RTM6 epoxy in compression. The peak yield strength increased with increasing strain rate, while the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio in compression were independent of the strain rate. The barreling of the sample in compression, quantified by the barreling ratio, showed an increase during the progression of the compression tests. However, the barreling ratio significantly decreased with the increasing strain rate. Finally, it was shown that neglecting the significant volume change in the yield stages gave rise to a non-negligible underestimation of the strength of the material.

Background: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR) correlates positively with elevated serum chemerin levels. This study was aimed at investigating the probable association between the serum chemerin level and the development of DR in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included Egyptians and classified them into four groups: group 1, including healthy individuals; group 2, including patients with T1DM without DR; group 3, including patients with T1DM with non-proliferative DR (NPDR); and group 4, including patients with T1DM with proliferative DR (PDR). The assessment included best-corrected distance visual acuity assessment, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, funduscopy, fundus fluorescein angiography, and macular ocular coherence tomography. Fasting blood samples were obtained from all participants to measure serum chemerin, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol, triglyceride, and creatinine levels. Serum chemerin levels were compared among the groups, and their correlations with age, duration of diabetes, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and creatinine levels were analyzed. Results: We recruited 209 participants, including 46 healthy individuals in group 1, 52 patients (T1DM and no DR) in group 2, 61 patients (T1DM and NPDR) in group 3, and 50 patients (T1DM and PDR) in group 4, with comparable mean ages and sex ratios among groups. The diabetes duration, body mass index, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and serum chemerin levels differed significantly among the groups (all P < 0.001), whereas the creatinine level did not (P > 0.05). The serum chemerin level was significantly higher in group 4 than in groups 3 and 2, in group 3 than in group 2, and in groups 3 and 4 than in group 1 (all P < 0.001). However, it was comparable between groups 1 and 2 (P > 0.05). It correlated with the duration of T1DM and HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and creatinine levels but not with age. Conclusions: Patients with T1DM with DR showed higher serum chemerin levels than those with T1DM without DR or healthy individuals. Serum chemerin levels were higher in those with PDR than in those with NPDR. Thus, serum chemerin levels are a potential biomarker of the development and severity of DR in patients with T1DM. Nevertheless, future diagnostic accuracy studies are required to confirm these potential applications.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of strain rate and filler content on the compressive behavior of the aeronautical grade RTM6 epoxy-based nanocomposites. Silica nanoparticles with different sizes, weight concentrations and surface functionalization were used as fillers. Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to study the glass transition temperature and storage modulus of the nanocomposites. Using quasi-static and split Hopkinson bar tests, strain rates of 0.001 s-1 to 1100 s-1 were imposed. Sample deformation was measured using stereo digital image correlation techniques. Results showed a significant increase in the compressive strength with increasing strain rate. The elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio showed strain rate independency. The addition of silica nanoparticles marginally increased the glass transition temperature of the resin, and improved its storage and elastic moduli and peak yield strength for all filler concentrations. Increasing the weight percentage of the filler slightly improved the peak yield strength. Moreover, the filler's size and surface functionalization did not affect the resin's compressive behavior at different strain rates.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common and a highly aggressive type of malignant renal tumor. In this manuscript, we aim to identify and integrate the optimal discriminating morphological, textural, and functional features that best describe the malignancy status of a given renal tumor. The integrated discriminating features may lead to the development of a novel comprehensive renal cancer computer-assisted diagnosis (RC-CAD) system with the ability to discriminate between benign and malignant renal tumors and specify the malignancy subtypes for optimal medical management. Informed consent was obtained from a total of 140 biopsy-proven patients to participate in the study (male = 72 and female = 68, age range = 15 to 87 years). There were 70 patients who had RCC (40 clear cell RCC (ccRCC), 30 nonclear cell RCC (nccRCC)), while the other 70 had benign angiomyolipoma tumors. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) images were acquired, and renal tumors were segmented for all patients to allow the extraction of discriminating imaging features. The RC-CAD system incorporates the following major steps: (i) applying a new parametric spherical harmonic technique to estimate the morphological features, (ii) modeling a novel angular invariant gray-level co-occurrence matrix to estimate the textural features, and (iii) constructing wash-in/wash-out slopes to estimate the functional features by quantifying enhancement variations across different CE-CT phases. These features were subsequently combined and processed using a two-stage multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) classifier to classify the renal tumor as benign or malignant and identify the malignancy subtype as well. Using the combined features and a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation approach, the developed RC-CAD system achieved a sensitivity of 95.3%±2.0%, a specificity of 99.9%±0.4%, and Dice similarity coefficient of 0.98±0.01 in differentiating malignant from benign tumors, as well as an overall accuracy of 89.6%±5.0% in discriminating ccRCC from nccRCC. The diagnostic abilities of the developed RC-CAD system were further validated using a randomly stratified 10-fold cross-validation approach. The obtained results using the proposed MLP-ANN classification model outperformed other machine learning classifiers (e.g., support vector machine, random forests, relational functional gradient boosting, etc.). Hence, integrating morphological, textural, and functional features enhances the diagnostic performance, making the proposal a reliable noninvasive diagnostic tool for renal tumors.

The effects of the addition of an aromatic hyperbranched polyester (AHBP) on thermal, mechanical, and fracture toughness properties of a thermosetting resin system were investigated. AHBP filler, synthesized by using a bulk poly-condensation reaction, reveals a glassy state at room temperature. Indeed, according to differential scanning calorimetry measurements, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of AHBP is 95 °C. Three different adduct weight percentages were employed to manufacture the AHBP/epoxy samples, respectively, 0.1, 1, and 5 wt%. Dynamical Mechanical Analysis tests revealed that the addition of AHBP induces a negligible variation in terms of conservative modulus, whereas a slight Tg reduction of about 4 °C was observed at 5 wt% of filler content. Fracture toughness results showed an improvement of both critical stress intensity factor (+18%) and critical strain energy release rate (+83%) by adding 5 wt% of AHBP compared to the neat epoxy matrix. Static and dynamic compression tests covering strain rates ranging from 0.0008 to 1000 s-1 revealed a pronounced strain rate sensitivity for all AHBP/epoxy systems. The AHBP composites all showed an increase of the true peak yield compressive strength with the best improvement associated with the sample with 0.1 wt% of AHBP.

Biodegradation of chicken feathers waste directed by Bacillus subtilis DB 100 (p5.2) cells was successfully carried out in 14L Bio Flo 110 laboratory scale fermentor. Seven liters of feathers-based modified basal medium II, feathers-based tap water and feathers-based distilled water separately in the fermentor were inoculated with activated bacterial cells. The fermentation processes were conducted at 37°C, 700 rpm agitation speed and 0.7 vvm air flow rate in the absence of kanamycin. Highest net levels of released feathers hydrolysis end products [soluble proteins and NH(2)-free amino groups] and keratinolytic alkaline protease activity in the fermentor were greatly comparable to those of shake flasks. Interestingly, the plasmid (p5.2) inside the recombinant B. subtilis cells growing in the fermentor displayed 100% stability till the fifth day of incubation and this presents a great challenge. Data certainly would encourage the transfer to larger scale fermentors to carry out feathers biodegradation process.

OVAT (one variable at a time) approach was applied in this study to screen the most important physicochemical key determinants involved in the process of sheep wool biodegradation. The process was directed by a keratinase-producing Bacillus subtilis DB 100 (p5.2) recombinant strain. Data indicate that, sheep wool could be degraded efficiently in cultures incubated at 30°C, with initial pH of 7 with agitation at 150 rpm. Two times autoclaved alkali treated and undefatted chopped sheep wool is more accessible to biodegradation. B. subtilis recombinant cells could utilize sheep wool as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Sheep wool-based modified basal medium II, lacking NH4Cl and yeast extract, could greatly support the growth of these bacterial cells. Sheep wool biodegradation was conducted efficiently in the absence of kanamycin consequently; high stability of the recombinant plasmid (p5.2) represents a great challenge upon scaling up this process. Three key determinants (sheep wool concentration, incubation time and inoculum size) imposing considerable constraints on the process are highlighted. Sheep wool-based tap water medium and sheep wool-based distilled water medium were formulated in this study. High levels of released end products, produced from sheep wool biodegradation are achieved upon using these two sheep wool-based water media. Data indicate that, sheep wool hydrolysate is rich in some amino acids, such as tyrosine, phenylalanine, lysine, proline, isoleucine, leucine, valine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid. Moreover, the resulting sheep wool hydrolysate contains soluble proteins of high and intermediate molecular weights. The present study demonstrates a feasible, cheap, reproducible, efficient and rapid biotechnological approach towards utilization of raw sheep wool waste through a recombinant bacterium.

Statistical optimization of the biodegradation of two keratinous wastes directed by Bacillus subtilis recombinant cells was carried out by means of a response surface methodology. A Box-Behnken design was employed to predict the optimal levels of three variables namely, keratin percent, incubation time and inoculum size. Analysis of variance revealed that, only keratin percent had the highest significant effect. Canonical analysis and ridge max analysis were used to get the optimal levels of the three predictors along with the optimum levels of the responses. The optimal sets of predicted and validated levels of the three variables were [7.69% (w/v) feathers, 96.58 h and 1.28% (v/v) inoculum size] and [8% (w/v) feathers, 98.45 h, 3.9% (v/v) inoculum size] to achieve the highest levels of soluble proteins (1.25-1.7 mg/ml) and NH(2)-free amino groups (245.82-270.0 µmol leucine/ml), respectively upon using three optimized feathers-based media. These values represented 83.67-100% and 100% adequacy for the models of soluble proteins and NH(2)-free amino groups, respectively. While, [8.23% (w/v) sheep wool, 5.52% (v/v) inoculum size and 46.58 h] and [8.33% (w/v) sheep wool, 5.89% (v/v) inoculum size and 63.46 h] were the optimal sets of predicted and validated levels of the above variables to achieve the highest yields of soluble proteins (3.4-4.6 mg/ml) and NH(2)-free amino groups (290.9-302.0 µmol leucine/ml), respectively upon using three optimized sheep wool-based media. These values represented 100% adequacy for the models of soluble proteins and NH(2)-free amino groups. By the end of the optimization strategy, a fold enhancement (2.14-2.43 and 1.78-2.12) in the levels of released soluble proteins and NH(2)-free amino groups, respectively was obtained upon using three optimized feathers-based media. However, a fold enhancement (4.25-5.75 and 2.42-2.5) in the levels of soluble proteins and NH(2)-free amino groups, respectively was obtained upon using three optimized sheep wool-based media. Data would encourage pilot scale optimization of the biodegradation of these wastes.
