RESUMEN

In the present study, green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (VNE-AgNPs) via Verbascum nudatum extract was carried out for the first time. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by different spectral methods such as UV-vis, FTIR, XRD, TEM, and EDAX. According to TEM analyses, the average size range of AgNPs was 17-21 nm, and the dominant peaks in the 111°, 200°, 221°, and 311° planes in the XRD pattern indicated the Ag-NPs FCC crystal structure. FTIR data showed that VNE-AgNPs interacted with many reducing, capping, and stabilizing phytochemicals during green synthesis. VNE-AgNPs had higher antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli bacterial strains with a maximum inhibition zone of 21 and 18 mm, respectively, than penicillin 5 IU, used as a positive control in the study. The cytotoxic effect of VNE-AgNPs appeared at a concentration of 50 µg/mL in L929 cells and 5 µg/mL in cancer (A549) cells. When the impact of VNE-AgNPs and C-AgNPs on inflammation was compared, it was found that VNE-AgNPs increased TNF-α levels (333.45 ± 67.20 ng/mg-protein) statistically (p < 0.05) more than TNF-α levels (256.92 ± 27.88 ng/mg-protein) in cells treated with C-AgNPs. VNE-Ag-NPs were found to have a degradation efficiency of 65% against methylene blue (MB) dye within 3 h.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to produce new nanocomposites with antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer properties that can be used in biomedical research based on carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) biopolymer. First, poly(2-oxo-2-(pentafluorophenoxy)ethyl-2-methylprop-2-enoate) (PPFMA) was synthesized and characterized by FTIR and NMR techniques. It was then blended with NaCMC by in situ/hydrothermal method to produce a semi-synthetic functional material. Changes in the FTIR data of the blend and the single Tg value from DSC confirmed the compatibility of the blend. To enhance the thermal and biological properties of the NaCMC-PPFMA blend, biosynthesized Ag-ZnONPs were hydrothermally incorporated into the blend at different weight ratios. The prepared materials were characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD and FTIR. The thermal stability of the materials was determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and glass transition temperatures (Tg) was determined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The oxidant, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic properties of PPFMA, Ag-ZnONPs, PPFMA-NaCMC blend, and nanocomposites were investigated in detail. The total oxidant state (TOS) value of the NaCMC-PPFMA blend, which was 0.72 µmol equivalent H2O2/L, increased to 7.2-10.4 µmol equivalent H2O2/L with the addition of Ag-ZnONPs. Ag-ZnONPs decreased total antioxidant state (TAS) levels of the nanocomposites while increasing their oxidant activity. Therefore, an increase in the antimicrobial activity of the nanocomposites was observed. Adding Ag-ZnONPs to the NaCMC-PPFMA blend increased the thermal stability by 22 °C and the Tg value by 9 °C. Finally, the potential of Ag-ZnONPs containing nanocomposites in wound healing therapies was examined. The findings suggest that nanocomposites prepared by incorporating Ag-ZnONPs into the semi-synthetic NaCMC-PPFMA blend can be a source of bio-safe raw materials and can be used as potential wound healers.

RESUMEN

In this study, poly(2-(3,5-dichloroanilino)-2-oxoethyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate) (PDCOEMA), a new synthetic polymer based on methacrylate, was synthesized and characterized. The blend of PDCOEMA with chitosan (CS) was prepared by the hydrothermal method and the DSC technique confirmed its formation. It was observed that PDCOEMA increased the thermal stability and glass transition temperature (Tg) of CS. The Tg value of the PDCOEMA-CS blend was increased at about 7 °C with the highest ZnO NPs contribution rate. PDCOEMA-CS/ZnO nanocomposites were prepared by adding ZnO NPs produced by biosynthesis at different weight ratios to the PDCOEMA-CS blend by hydrothermal method. When the thermal stability of nanocomposites determined by TGA was examined, it was observed that it increased significantly compared to CS. While the initial decomposition temperature of CS was 270 °C, this value increased to 293 °C after blending with DCOEMA, and to 317 °C with the addition of 7 % ZnO NPs. Antimicrobial, anticancer, cytotoxic, antioxidant, and wound healing properties of PDCOEMA, CS, PDCOEMA-CS blend, and nanocomposites were determined. According to the obtained results, it was observed that nanocomposites containing 5 % and 7 % ZnO NPs showed good anticancer activity against A549 cells at a dose of 10 µg/mL. The results show that the produced nanocomposites can contribute to developing CS-based materials.

RESUMEN

Hesperidin (HSP) is considered to be the most effective antimicrobial agent against SARS-CoV2 virus. The HSP was loaded onto ZnO nanoparticles that were successfully incorporated, via the hydrothermal method, into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for use as food packaging material. The hydrothermal method enabled the bioactive ZnO-HSP to be homogeneously dispersed in the PVA, which significantly increased the thermal stability of the matrix, while decreasing the softening temperature. The water holding capacity and water solubility of the obtained nanocomposites was reduced compared to the PVA. Finally, the ZnO-HSP antimicrobial agent contributed important antibacterial properties to the PVA and increased its antioxidant capacity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli pathogens. In addition, the nanocomposites had no cytotoxic/proliferative effects on cancer cells. All results showed promise that the PVA/ZnO-HSP nanocomposites would be an excellent alternative for food packaging applications.

RESUMEN

Objective: The present study was aimed to determine the effect of penile prosthesis implantation (PPI) surgery on penile sensation by evaluating the penile electromyography (EMG) variables. Methods: The research was designed as a prospective study. Thirty patients who were diagnosed with organic erectile dysfunction and had underwent PPI surgery between January 2017 and January 2018 in the Urology Clinic of Antalya Training and Research Hospital were included in this study. Penile sensory EMG was performed on each patient 1 day prior to the surgery by the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation clinic. Additionally, the control EMG study was also performed in the 3rd and 6th postoperative months. Results: We included 27 patients in this study who attended regular follow-ups and had complete EMG results. Out of the 27 patients, 23 (85.2%) patients had received malleable (ProMedon) penile prosthesis, one (3.7%) patient had received a two-piece inflatable (Ambicor) penile prosthesis, and three (11.1%) patients had received a three-piece inflatable (AMS 700 CXR) penile prosthesis. The mean nerve conduction value (NCV) of the patients was 29.85 (standard derivation: 22.54; range: 0-78.4) m/s during the preoperative period, whereas it was 27.64 (standard derivation: 24.72; range: 0-83.3) m/s in the 3rd postoperative month and 24.80 (standard derivation: 22.31; range: 0-88.4) m/s in the 6th postoperative month. There was no significant difference between preoperative NCV and 3rd postoperative month NCV (p=0.607). Similarly, no significant difference was observed between preoperative NCV and 6th postoperative month NCV (p=0.276). Additionally, the change between NCV values at postoperative 3rd and 6th months was not statistically significant (p=0.553). Conclusion: Significant loss of penile sensation does not occur in patients who undergo PPI surgery.

RESUMEN

In this study, hesperidin (HSP) biological agent, which has strong antioxidant properties, was successfully transferred to ZnO nanoparticles, which were first synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Then, chitosan (CS)/ZnO-HSP nanocomposites were produced by adding different ratios of the ZnO-HSPs to the biodegradable CS biopolymer by hydrothermal method. The resulting materials were characterized using various biophysical strategies, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The mean particle size of ZnO was estimated to be 29 nm from the XRD calculations and SEM measurements. The effect of the ZnO-HSPs on the thermal properties of pure CS was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry techniques, and improvements were noted in the thermal properties of CS. While the Tg value of CS was 81 °C, this value increased by 13-94 °C with the addition of 6 wt% by weight of the ZnO-HSP. The antibacterial effect of materials was determined by the disc diffusion method. The ZnO-HSPs added to the CS caused the nanocomposites to have a remarkable effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus microorganisms. While the inhibition diameter of the CS against E. coli was 18.3, the same value increased to 22.3 for the composite containing 6 wt% the ZnO-HSP. The HSP increased the antioxidant capacity of both the ZnO-HSP particles and the CS/ZnO-HSP nanocomposites, reducing the toxic effects of ZnO nanoparticles. Thus, it was determined that the CS/ZnO-HSP nanocomposites did not have any cytotoxicity in healthy human cells. The fact that the produced nanocomposites exhibit antibacterial activity and do not harm human cells shows that they can be a safe product for health. From all these results, this triple hybrid system is hoped that it will be used in biomedical applications as a naturally-sourced, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective composite biomaterial by combining its antimicrobial and strong antioxidant properties.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Comparing the two different drainage methods of percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) versus retrograde ureteral double - J (DJ) stent insertion in patients with obstructive pyelonephritis cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients with obstructive pyelonephritis secondary to urolithiasis who underwent PCN or DJ insertion were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to drainage method. After exclusion criteria, the study included 105 patients. The groups were compared for intraoperative outcomes, duration of fluoroscopy usage, the time needed for normalization of infection parameters (white blood cells (WBC), C - reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin), and complications were observed. RESULTS: From 105 patients, 56 patients were in DJ stent group and 49 patients were in PCN group. According to intraoperative data, operative time and fluoroscopy duration were significantly shorter in the DJ ureteral stent group (P < .001). WBC returned to normal range in mean 3.5 ± 1.3 days in the DJ stent group and 3.2 ± 1.1 days in the PCN group (95% CI: -0.76-0.21, P = .268). There were no statistically significant differences identified for the duration for CRP, PCT and fever to return to normal range between the drainage methods. The complication rates was 51.8% for DJ stent group and, 30.6% in PCN group (P = .028). CONCLUSION: Both methods are effective and safe in obstructive pyelonephritis. Despite the higher complication rate in DJ stent group, these complications were minor.

RESUMEN

Firstly, silver nanoparticles were synthesized by green synthesis method from Moringa oleifera extract. Nanocomposites containing newly synthesized methacrylate polymer, poly 2-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-oxoethyl-2-methylprop-2-enoate (PFPAMA) and Ag nanoparticles from M. oleifera in different mass ratios (1, 3, and 5 wt%) were synthesized using the hydrothermal method. The morphological and structural properties of the materials have been examined by SEM, FTIR, UV, TGA, and XRD techniques. The activation energies (Ea) related to thermal decomposition of the nanocomposites were estimated by the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose methods by using non-isothermal TGA experiments. The thermal stability, glass transition temperature (Tg), and the thermal decomposition activation energy (Ea) values of nanocomposites were increased by increasing the Ag nanoparticles amount on the composite. The dielectric constant (ε'), the dielectric loss factor (ε″) and ac conductivity of neat PFPAMA and nanocomposites were also measured for the frequency range of 100 Hz to 2 kHz at 25 °C. It was seen that the frequency dependence of the dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor decreased with increasing frequency. The biological activities of nanocomposites against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus), gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria and Candida krusei yeast were also tested. The antibacterial effect increased against both bacterial species as the amount of Ag nanoparticles from M. oleifera in the nanocomposites increased. In addition, the wound healing properties of nanocomposites were investigated by the scratch wound test.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Treatment recommendations for kidney or ureteral stones are based on stone size; however, this is uncertain for bladder stones. This study aims to determine the best approach to bladder stones based on their size. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 401 patients with bladder stones. Patients were divided into three different groups according to stone size (11-20 mm, 21-30 mm, 31-40 mm as groups 1, 2, and 3 respectively). Patients had transurethral cystolithotripsy (TUCL), percutaneous cystolithotripsy (PCCL), and open cystolithotomy (OCL) performed. RESULTS: Stone fragments were removed completely in all patients. When catheter time, postoperative stay, and hematocrit decrease values were compared, the results were significantly higher for OCL in all three groups (p: 0.001). When the relationship between stone sizes and operation time is evaluated, TUCL had shorter operation times (34.1 ± 10.6 min) in group 1. However, TUCL had longer operation times in group 2 and group 3 compared to OCL and PCCL. CONCLUSION: TUCL may be preferable due to better postoperative outcomes and shorter operative time for ⩽2 cm stones. As the stone size increases, PCCL is more favorable in terms of operation time.

RESUMEN

The present study aimed to determine the antibacterial, antioxidant, cytotoxic activities and element levels of Verbascum lasianthum Boiss. ex Bentham. The free radical scavenging activity, total phenolic content, total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant capacity levels were analyzed as the antioxidant parameters. Seven bacteria and one yeast strains were used to determine the antimicrobial activity. The cytotoxic effects of plant extracts were determined using A549, MCF-7, HepG2 and SH-SY5Y cell lines. The findings demonstrated that the antioxidant activity increased with an increase in the phenolic content of extracts. This species is rich in bio-elements such as Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, and Mg. Different concentrations of extracts could have antibacterial activity. This plant had an apparent cytotoxic effect only in the A549 cell line and increased the proliferation in other cell lines. The findings demonstrated that plant could be used alone or as a supplement to the current treatment protocols in diseases due to their antioxidant, antibacterial and cytotoxic effects. However, it is recommended that Verbascum L. species intended for use in therapy should be procured from areas where there is no soil pollution or organic farming is preferred.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the changes in penile sensation by electrophysiological tests in patients who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) and to demonstrate the role of dorsal penile nerve injury in postoperative erectile dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six volunteer patients who were eligible for RP were included in the study. Preoperative penile sensory electromyography and the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) questionnaire were done for each patient. Erectile function assessment and electrophysiological evaluation of penile sensation were repeated at postoperative 3rd and 6th months. RESULTS: Postoperative IIEF-5 scores and electromyography values were significantly lower than preoperative findings (p < 0.05). The IIEF-5 scores in the nerve sparing-RP (NS-RP) group were significantly higher than the non-nerve sparing-RP (NNS-RP) group in the postoperative period. Nerve conduction velocity values in the NS-RP group were also higher than the NNS-RP group at the postoperative 3rd and 6th months. However, these changes were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Patients who underwent RP have decreased penile sensation due to cavernous nerve damage and a possible dorsal penile nerve injury. The decrease of penile sensation may be associated with postoperative erectile dysfunction.

RESUMEN

In the first step of this study, 2-oxo-2-[(2,4,6-trifluorophenyl)amino]ethyl-2-methylprop-2-enoate(OTFAMA) monomer was synthesized and characterized. Then, a series copolymers were obtained by free-radical copolymerization method of OTFAMA and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), which is a commercial monomer at 65 °C in 1,4-dioxane solvent. Structural characterizations of synthesized monomer and copolymers were carried out using FTIR, 1H-13C-NMR instruments. The composition of the copolymers was estimated by elemental analysis. The reactivity ratios (r1 and r2) were obtained from the various linear graphical methods. The values of r1 (OTFAMA) = 0.33 and r2 (GMA) = 0.45 were found from the same graphical methods. The thermal behaviors of all the polymers have been investigated using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). A kinetic study of the thermal decompostion of copolymers was investigated using thermogravimetric analyzer with non-isothermal methods selected for analyzing solid-state kinetics data. The average activation energy values were calculated via Kissinger and Ozawa models in a period of α = 0.10-0.80. Photo stability of the copolymers was investigated. Also, the biological activity of the copolymers against different bacterial and fungal species has been investigated.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the utility of the radius, exophytic/endophytic, nearness, anterior/posterior, location (RENAL); preoperative aspects and dimensions used for an anatomic evaluation (PADUA), and centrality index (C-index) scores for the outcomes of partial nephrectomy (PN). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients who underwent PN with contrast-enhanced preoperative imaging from January 2015 to June 2018 were identified. The RENAL, PADUA, and C-index scores were assigned. The correlation between these scoring systems and perioperative and long-term renal functional outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 78 patients were included in the study (58 men and 20 women; age, 58±11.4 years). Median warm ischemia time (WIT), estimated blood loss (EBL), and operation time (OT) were 26 min, 115 mL, and 140 min, respectively. The RENAL score was related to WIT, EBL, and OT (p<0.001, p=0.003, and p=0.023, respectively). The PADUA score was associated with WIT, EBL, and OT (p<0.001, p=0.013, and p=0.005, respectively). The C-index score was correlated with WIT, EBL, and OT (p<0.001, p=0.010, and p=0.001, respectively). The C-index score also correlated with the percentage change in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (p=0.037). However, on univariable and multivariable regression analyses, only WIT significantly affected the postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate reduction. CONCLUSION: The RENAL, PADUA, and C-index scores were significantly associated with perioperative outcomes of PN. In addition, the C-index score was correlated with long-term renal functional outcomes.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE:: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic pyeloplasty in children less than 12 months of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS:: The records of 20 infants, who had pelviureteric junction obstruction and subsequently underwent LP from January 2013 to November 2016 with at least 1 year of follow-up, were retrospectively reviewed. Patients demographics, the results of preoperative and postoperative imaging studies, perioperative details, complications, and results were noted. RESULTS:: The mean age of 20 infants was 4.75 months. The gender of cases was 5 females (25%) and 15 males (75%). Of that, 13 (65%) laparoscopic pyeloplasties were in left side and 7 (35%) were in right side. No cases needed open conversation. Aberrant crossing vessel was observed in three patients (15%). The mean operation time was 79.35 min (45-128 min). The mean hospital stay was 2.9 ± 0.308 days (2-3 days). There were complications in three children (15%); two patients developed stent migration and one child had fever over 38°. Three children with complications did not require a second intervention. In one child, the kidney was non-functioning in follow-up and nephrectomy was performed. The anteroposterior diameter significantly reduced. Preoperative mean value was 24.305 ± 5.6157 and postoperative mean value was 15.40 ± 6.030 (p = 0.000, p < 0.05). There was a significant degree of improvement in renal split function for all patients. Preoperative mean values were 45.53 ± 11.512, while postoperative values were 47.850 ± 13.347 (p = 0.029, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION:: Although there are doubts about the reliability and efficacy of results for pyeloplasty in children less 12 months, many studies including this study show that laparoscopic pyeloplasty is an effective and reliable method for infants.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To present the surgical and pathological results of robotic radical cystectomy (RRC) operations performed in our clinic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 18 patients, who underwent RRC and intracorporeal urinary diversion between October 2016 and September 2017 for clinically localized bladder cancer in our clinic, were included in the study. The results were evaluated under three headings. 1. operative outcomes (total operation time, perioperative blood loss, postoperative hematocrit decrease) 2. recovery period (pull-off drain day, hospitalization time) 3. oncological results (pathologic stage, surgical margin, number, and characteristics of lymph nodes removed). Complications within the postoperative 30-day period, were evaluated and the Clavien classification system was used to classify the complications. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 64.4 (52-80) years. Seventeen male patients and one female patient underwent robotic cystectomy. At the operative outcomes, the mean blood loss was 325 mL, and the mean hematocrit decrease was 3.15%. The mean duration of the surgery was 471 minutes (330-630), while the median operative time was 450 minutes. Complications occured in 6 patients during the early postoperative period. Six of them (75%) had minor complications (Clavien grade 1), two patients (25%) had major complications (Clavien grade 4). CONCLUSION: Our initial experience with RRC is that, this surgical technique has acceptable operative, oncological and short-term clinical outcomes. However, prospective randomized studies are needed to assess whether there is a clear advantage compared to open surgery.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Intradural spinal cord tumors (IDSCTs) in children and young adults are rare diseases. This present study is aimed to demonstrate our experience with a large series of children and young adults with IDSCT. METHODS: A total of 50 patients aged <20 years with IDSCT treated in our department between 1990 and 2010 were included in the study. Clinical, histological, and radiological findings, treatment strategies, and clinical outcome were retrospectively assessed. Depending on the relation to the spinal cord, IDSCT were dichotomized into intramedullary SCT (IMSCT) and extramedullary SCT (EMSCT). The functional outcome was evaluated with the Frankel score assessing the longest available follow-up period. RESULTS: Mean age was 10.3 years (range 6 months-19 years). IDSCT surgery was performed in 44 patients (88%). A common first symptom in patients with EMSCT was neck and back pain (41%), whereas monoparesis of arms (43%) were often seen in patients with IMSCT. The main duration of the symptoms was longer in patients with IMSCT. The postoperative functional outcome was generally comparable to the preoperative functional condition, while better for EMSCT (P < 0.01). The functional outcome at last follow-up correlated significantly with the preoperative Frankel score (P < 0.002). CONCLUSION: Due to the mostly mild impact of the surgery on the functional outcome, the surgical treatment of IDSCT in children and young patients can be uniquely advocated.

RESUMEN

The free radical copolymerization of 2-thienylmethyl 4-vinylbenzyl ether (TMVBE) with 2-oxo-2-(2-thienylmethoxy)ethyl-2-methylacrylate (TMOEM) has been carried out in 1,4-dioxane at 65 °C ± 1 and were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared, (1)H NMR, and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. (1)H NMR analysis was used to determine the molar fractions of TMVBE and TMOEM in the copolymers. The monomer reactivity ratios were calculated according to the general copolymerization equation using Kelen-Tüdõs and Finemann-Ross linearization methods. The reactivity ratios indicated a tendency toward alternation copolymerization. The thermal behaviors of copolymers with various compositions were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Also, the apparent thermal decomposition activation energies were calculated by the Ozawa and Kissinger methods with a Shimadzu TGA 60 thermogravimetric analysis thermobalance. All the products showed moderate activity against different strains of bacteria and fungi.

RESUMEN

Three derivatives of styrene monomer, 4-chlorophenyl-4-vinylbenzyl ether (I), 4-methoxyphenyl-4-vinylbenzyl ether (II) and 4-ethylphenyl-4-vinylbenzyl ether (III) were synthesized. The synthesized two novel compounds (I and III) and one with undefined structural features were identified by experimental spectroscopic techniques and density functional approach. The optimized geometrical structure, vibrational and electronic transitions along with chemical shifts of those compounds were presented in this study. The vibrational spectra of investigated compounds were recorded in solid state with FT-IR spectrometry in the range of 4000-400 cm(-1). The computational vibrational wavenumbers and also ground state equilibrium conformations were carried out by using density functional method with 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. Assignments of the fundamental vibrational modes were examined on the basis of the measured data and total energy distribution (TED) of the vibrational modes, calculated with scaled quantum mechanical (SQM) method. Isotropic chemical shift of hydrogen and carbon nuclei were investigated via observed (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra in deuterated DMSO solution and predicted data applied with gauge-invariant atomic orbitals (GIAOs) method. The UV absorption spectra of monomers were observed in the range of 200-800 nm in ethanol, and time dependent DFT method was used to obtain the electronic properties. A detailed description of spectroscopic behaviors of compound was given based on the comparison of experimental measurements and theoretical computations.
