Hemangioma of the facial sinuses is a rare pathology, and given the lack of clinical specificity, the differential diagnosis with a malignant lesion often arises. We report the case of a 32-year-old patient who consulted for recurrent epistaxis of moderate severity. The preoperative diagnosis of a hemangioma of the left maxillary sinus was based on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging data, confirmed by the anatomopathological study of the surgical specimen, preceded by an embolization that facilitated the endoscopic surgical excision.

Introduction: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) have been separately associated to gliomas. IDH is a molecular marker considered in the histo-molecular classification of gliomas as well as in their management and prognosis. However, even if oncomodulatory properties were attributed to HCMV, its association to gliomas remains a controversy. Most of the studies that investigated this association used the histological classification of gliomas; nevertheless, in 2016, the World Health Organization recommended the introduction of molecular characteristics to refine this classification. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of HCMV in glioma patients, the association between HCMV and IDH with gliomas and subsequently their associations with survival of patients in a Moroccan cohort. Methods: A series of 102 gliomas and 32 controls were analyzed by nested PCR (nPCR) to determine the HCMV status. PCR and sequencing were used to determine the IDH subtypes in tumors samples. IDH mutation and HCMV status were correlated to the characteristics of the tumors using SPSS, whereas the survival curves were obtained by the Kaplan-Meier method and the log rank test. Results: HCMV shows significant association with gliomas with a detection rate of 30.4% and no case in the control group. The IDH mutation was identified in 40.9-50% of grade II-III gliomas and in 10.9% of grade IV gliomas. A significant association was obtained between survival in patients with glioblastomas and IDH/HCMV status. Glioblastoma patients with HCMV+ and IDHwt had a poor prognostic. Conclusions: HCMV was detected exclusively in tumor cases and was significantly associated with poor prognosis in patients with gliomas and particularly with glioblastomas. The worst overall survival was significantly seen in patients with gliomas HCMV+/IDHwt. So, it will be of interest to consider HCMV and IDH status in gliomas management strategies.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2) were used in various fields such as food industry, cosmetics, medicine, and agriculture. Despite the many advantages of nanotechnology, the adverse effects of nanoparticles are inevitable. The present study was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of bee bread on titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticle toxicity. Male rats were randomly divided into four groups: Group 1 received daily by gavage (10 mL/kg bw) of distilled water, Group 2 received bee bread ethanolic extract (100 mg/kg bw), Group 3 received TiO2 (100 mg/kg bw) and distilled water (10 mL/kg bw), and Group 4 received TiO2 (100 mg/kg bw) and bee bread ethanolic extract (100 mg/kg bw). All treatments were given daily by gavage during 30 days. At the end of the experiment period, blood samples were collected to analyze fasting blood glucose, lipid profile (TC, TG, LDL-C, HDL-C, and VLDL-C), liver enzymes (AST, ALT, and LDH), total protein, urea, albumin, creatinine, sodium, potassium, and chloride ions. In addition, histological examinations of the kidneys, liver, and brain were investigated. The results showed that the subacute administration of TiO2 alone (100 mg/kg bw) had induced hyperglycemia (309 ± 5 mg/dL) and elevation of hepatic enzyme levels, accompanied by a change in both lipid profile and renal biomarkers as well as induced congestion and dilatation in the hepatic central vein and congestion in kidney and brain tissues. However, the cotreatment with bee bread extract restored these biochemical parameters and attenuated the deleterious effects of titanium nanoparticles on brain, liver, and kidney functions which could be due to its rich content on functional molecules. The findings of this paper could make an important contribution to the field of using bee bread as a detoxifying agent against titanium dioxide nanoparticles and other xenobiotics.

INTRODUCTION: In Morocco, a syndromic approach has been implemented for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) management. However, those infections can be asymptomatic and the use of the syndromic approach to their management can be inappropriate and lead to dissemination of infection. Therefore, it would be important to determine the epidemiology and risk factors of bacterial STIs (Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG)) in a Moroccan population and their association with symptoms to assess the appropriacy of the use of the syndromic approach. METHODS: Cervical samples were collected from symptomatic and asymptomatic consenting women attending the University Hospital of Fez and were tested by PCR for NG, CT and MG using specific primers. We assessed the infection status and its association with different risk factors and genital STIs-related symptoms. RESULTS: Of 809 tested for CT, NG and MG, 16.6% tested positive for at least one STI. Of the 134 participants who tested positive for at least one bacterial STI, 74.2% had no genital STIs-related symptoms. Moreover, the results showed a significantly high rate of NG and MG infections in asymptomatic women. However, the determined risk factors for NG, MG and CT infections were menopause (p=0.002), oral contraception (p=0.036) and a high number of parities (p=0.048), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This investigation shows a predominance of NG infection and a high prevalence of STIs in asymptomatic patients. These results highlight that the adopted syndromic approach will not be adapted in the management of these STIs. Thus, the implementation of a systematic diagnostic program in order to enhance their management is needed.

Oxidative stress is an important etiology of chronic diseases and many studies have shown that natural products might alleviate oxidative stress-induced pathogenesis. The study aims to evaluate the effect of Argan oil and Syzygium aromaticum essential oil on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced liver, brain and kidney tissue toxicity as well as biochemical changes in wistar rats. The antioxidant content of Argan oil and Syzygium aromaticum essential oil was studied with the use of gas chromatography. The animals received daily by gavage, for 21 days, either distilled water, Syzygium aromaticum essential oil, Argan oil, H2O2 alone, H2O2 and Syzygium aromaticum essential oil, or H2O2 and Argan oil. Blood samples were withdrawn on day 21 for the biochemical blood tests, and the kidney, liver and brain tissue samples were prepared for histopathology examination. The results showed that the content of antioxidant compounds in Syzygium aromaticum essential oil is higher than that found in Argan oil. H2O2 increased level of blood urea, liver enzymes, total cholesterol, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL-C), Triglycerides (TG) and Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL), and decreased the total protein, albumin and High Density Lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). There was no significant effect on blood electrolyte or serum creatinine. The histopathology examination demonstrated that H2O2 induces dilatation in the central vein, inflammation and binucleation in the liver, congestion and hemorrhage in the brain, and congestion in the kidney. The H2O2-induced histopathological and biochemical changes have been significantly alleviated by Syzygium aromaticum essential oil or Argan oil. It is concluded that the Argan oil and especially the mixture of Argan oil with Syzygium aromaticum essential oil can reduce the oxidative damage caused by H2O2, and this will pave the way to investigate the protective effects of these natural substances in the diseases attributed to the high oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Phyllodes tumors (PT) are uncommon biphasic tumors, accounting for less than 1% of all breast primary neoplasms. They form a wide variety of tumors ranging from benign to malignant. Several histological features are used to grade PT into 3 categories: benign (grade I), borderline (grade II) and malignant (grade III) tumors. The aim of our study was to analyse histolopathological, radiological and clinical features of PT from an experience of a single center. METHODS: It was a retrospective study including 106 patients diagnosed with phyllodes tumors on surgical specimens at the department of pathology, of Hassan II university hospital (Fez, Morocco), from 2009 to 2016. RESULTS: The mean age was 33.81 years (range of 13-66 years), and the mean age increases with the tumor grade (mean ages of 32.32, 32.87 and 33.65 years respectively for grade I, II and III PT) (p = 0.023); 78 patients (73.58%) had benign PT, 20 (18.86%) had borderline PT and 8 (7.54%) patients were diagnosed with malignant PT. Mostly, the tumor size was <5 cm (63.2%), with BI-RADS 3 (51 patients, 48.11%). The tumor size and the radiological suspicion (ACR/BI-RADS) increased with the tumor grade (p < 0.001). Mitosis count, cellular atypia and stromal cellularity increased with the tumor grade (p < 0.001). Also, the presence of necrosis is associated with malignant PT (p < 0.001). Before surgery, patients had undergone core needle biopsies (CNB) for diagnostic purpose, and the overral sensitivity of this diagnostic procedure was 71.83%. The sentivity of the CNB decreased from grade I PT to grade III PT (from 56.81% to 37.5%), however its specificity increased from grade I to grade III PT (from 59.25% to 100%). CONCLUSION: Phyllodes tumors of the breast are rare neoplasms with a wide range of clinicopathologic presentations. The core needle biopsy has a good diagnostic sensitivity compared to definitive diagnosis on surgical specimens. There was a statistically significant association between the histological grade of PT and tumor size, radiological suspicion, mitotic count, cellular atypia, stromal cellularity, and tumor necrosis.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of lung metastasis from benign uterine leiomyomas is rarely reported especially in post menopausal women. The pathogenesis of these metastatic benign tumors still remains a subject of various speculations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman presented with a chronic cough and dyspnea. She had undergone 8 years previously, hysterectomy for benign leiomyomas. A chest computed tomography scan showed a 4 cm solitary nodular parenchymal tumor that increased in size after 12 months. The histological analysis of the biopsy from this nodule showed a benign tumor with regular spindle cells disposed in intersected fascicles. At immunohistochemical analysis, the tumor cells were positive for smooth muscle markers and oestrogen-progesterone receptors with a low mitotic index assessed by Ki-67. These features were consistent with a benign metastasizing uterine leiomyoma. At the multidisciplinary meeting, prescription of an aromatase inhibitor has been decided for the patient. CONCLUSIONS: Benign metastasizing uterine leiomyomas of the lung are very rare tumors. Although extremely rare in post menopausal women, their diagnosis should be considered in symptomatic patients with a history of hysterectomy for leiomyomas.
