RESUMEN

The transformation of pastures from a degraded state to sustainable productivity is a major challenge in tropical livestock production. Stoloniferous forage legumes such as Arachis pintoi (forage peanut) are one of the most promising alternatives for intensifying pasture-based beef livestock operations with reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This 2-year study assessed beef cattle performance, nutrient intake and digestibility, and balance of GHG emissions in three pasture types (PT): (1) mixed Palisade grass - Urochloa brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) R.D. Webster (syn. Brachiaria brizantha Stapf cv. Marandu) and forage peanut (A. pintoi Krapov. & W.C. Greg. cv. BRS Mandobi) pastures (Mixed), (2) monoculture Palisade grass pastures with 150 kg of N/ha per year (Fertilised), and (3) monoculture Palisade grass without N fertiliser (Control). Continuous stocking with a variable stocking rate was used in a randomised complete block design, with four replicates per treatment. The average daily gain and carcass gain were not influenced by the PT (P = 0.439 and P = 0.100, respectively) and were, on average, 0.433 kg/animal per day and 83.4 kg/animal, respectively. Fertilised and Mixed pastures increased by 102 and 31.5%, respectively, the liveweight gain per area (kg/ha/yr) compared to the Control pasture (P < 0.001). The heifers in the Mixed pasture had lower CH4 emissions (g/animal per day; P = 0.009), achieving a reduction of 12.6 and 10.1% when compared to the Fertilised and Control pastures, respectively. Annual (N2O) emissions (g/animal) and per kg carcass weight gain were 59.8 and 63.1% lower, respectively, in the Mixed pasture compared to the Fertilised pasture (P < 0.001). Mixed pasture mitigated approximately 23% of kg CO2eq/kg of carcass when substituting 150 kg of N/ha per year via fertiliser. Mixed pastures with forage peanut are a promising solution to recover degraded tropical pastures by providing increased animal production with lower GHG emissions.

An Actinobacteria - Kitasatospora sp. K002 - was isolated from the soil of Cerrado, a savanna-like Brazilian biome. Herein, we conducted a phylogenetic, phenotypic and physiological characterization, revealing its potential for biotechnological applications. Kitasatospora sp. K002 is an aerobic, non-motile, Gram-positive bacteria that forms grayish-white mycelium on solid cultures and submerged spores with vegetative mycelia on liquid cultures. The strain showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Genomic analysis indicated that Kitasatospora xanthocidica JCM 4862 is the closest strain to K002, with a dDDH of 32.8-37.8% and an ANI of 86.86% and the pangenome investigations identified a high number of rare genes. A total of 60 gene clusters of 22 different types were detected by AntiSMASH, and 22 gene clusters showed low similarity (< 10%) with known compounds, which suggests the potential production of novel bioactive compounds. In addition, phylogenetic analysis and morphophysiological characterization clearly distinguished Kitasatospora sp. K002 from other related species. Therefore, we propose that Kitasatospora sp. K002 should be recognized as a new species of the genus Kitasatospora - Kitasatospora brasiliensis sp. nov. (type strains = K002).

INTRODUCTION: The increase in infectious diseases mediated by oral bacteria has been one of the most potent threats to human health, specifically to the elderly. Researchers seek to incorporate antimicrobial nanomaterials into PMMA to control the colonization of microorganisms and reduce deadly diseases. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review to answer the question: "Does graphene oxide incorporated into polymethylmethacrylate influence its antimicrobial activity?" METHODS: The electronic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases, and articles published until October 2021 were selected. The search terms were: ("acrylic resin" OR PMMA) AND (graphene OR "oxide graphene") AND (antimicrobial OR antibacterial OR "anti-infective agent"). The risk of bias analysis of the articles was performed using the quasi-experimental study assessment tool adapted from the JBI. RESULTS: Two hundred and fifty-nine articles were found in the databases. After removing the duplicates, 245 were analyzed by title and abstract. Of these, 06 were selected for full reading, of which 03 met the eligibility criteria and were included in this systematic review. CONCLUSION: This systematic review's findings can infer that the incorporation of graphene in the form of graphene-based coatings to PMMA showed antimicrobial effectiveness.

Alternatives have been sought to add an antimicrobial property to denture adhesives. This study evaluated the antimicrobial potential of adhesives associated with nanostructured silver vanadate decorated with silver nanoparticles (ß-AgVO3). Specimens in acrylic resin were treated with the adhesives associated with ß-AgVO3 (1%, 2.5%, 5% and 10%). As control, specimens treated only with Ultra Corega Cream (UCC) or Ultra Corega Powder (UCP) adhesive were used. Multispecies biofilm of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated by counting colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL), colorimetric assay and fluorescence microscopy. The data were analyzed using the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni multiple comparisons test (α=0.05). For both adhesives, a small amount of ß-AgVO3 (1%) completely inhibited S. mutans (P⟨0.05). For the other microorganisms, there was a reduction in metabolic activity and complete inhibition in the groups with intermediate or greater amounts of nanomaterial (P⟨0.05), except for C. albicans, which was reduced (P⟨0.05) but not completely inhibited in UCP. Microscopy that showed less biofilm in the groups with ß-AgVO3 and in the UCC than UCP. Denture adhesives in powder and cream form with ß-AgVO3 showed potential antimicrobial activity against multispecies biofilm. Powder adhesive showed higher biofilm formation.

INTRODUCTION: Additive manufacturing is a tool with potential use in medicine and dentistry. The manufacture of metals and composites is already advanced, however, concerns about titanium hypersensitivity, tissue staining, and corrosion caused by gradual material degradation encourage research into more biocompatible alternatives. OBJECTIVE: This systematic scoping review aimed to gather studies that evaluated zirconia implants produced by additive manufacturing to describe the current stage of the printing technique and the final product. METHODS: Searches in Embase, PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were enriched with manual searches between February and March 2021 and updated in June 2022 using keywords: zirconium implants, zirconium oxide, additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, 3D printing, selective laser melting, and electron beam melting. The criteria included studies that evaluated or described zirconia implants obtained by 3D printing, with a direct relationship to dentistry or orthopedics. RESULTS: The database search resulted in 671 articles. Eight articles were selected for full reading and remained in this systematic review. CONCLUSION: The printing technique for zirconia implants is promising. However, further studies are required before implants produced by the printing technique can be tested clinically. The literature with results regarding the impression product is still limited.

INTRODUCTION: Pit and fissure sealants are effective in preventing caries disease, however, they may present flaws that damage the physical barrier leading to treatment failure. OBJECTIVE: To answer the question ''Do pit and fissure sealants present good adhering to the dental structure when analyzed by their resistance to shear/microshear?". METHODS: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and was recorded in Open Science Framework. Embase, PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases were used for the search strategy. The articles were selected according to the eligibility criteria. The risk of bias was performed with the adaptation of the quasi-experimental studies tool by Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). RESULTS: 1245 studies were found in the databases when applying the search strategy, after removal of duplicates 881 were evaluated and 44 were selected. After applying the JBI tool, 30 studies presented low risk and 15 moderate risk of bias. Meta-analysis was not possible to performed due to the heterogeneity of the studies. CONCLUSION: The adhesion is dependent on the application protocol, and among the protocols evaluated, conditioning with 37% phosphoric acid for 60 seconds and contamination of the substrate, as these can affect sealant adhesion.

This study aimed to evaluate the productive performance, carcass yield, and intestinal morphometry of broiler chickens subjected to diets with the inclusion of buriti oil. Buriti oil is an energy food that can be used in chicken feed to replace soybean oil, which has a high cost in production, also has its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, which can provide benefits in chicken feed. 180 male broilers of the Ross lineage were used, distributed in a completely randomized design with 3 treatments and 6 replicates of 10 birds per experimental unit. The experimental phase took place from 14 to 28 days and levels 0; 0.75 and 1.50% of buriti oil were added to the corn and soybean-based feed. It can be inferred that the buriti oil-based diets in the diet with insertion of levels of 0%, 0.75% and 1.50% did not differ significantly for the productive performance variables, but in relation to the productive yield there was a significant difference for carcass yield accompanied by greater disposition of abdominal fat, thigh and heart fat, a common effect in the use of oils. Although no statistical differences were observed for most of the variables in the assessment of intestinal morphometry, there was an increase in the crypt depth of the duodenum and ileum and an increase in the muscle layer of the duodenum and jejunum, which may have been caused by some injury to the intestine and not by direct effect of buriti oil. In the other variables there was no difference between treatments and it is concluded that buriti oil did not harm the performance, yield and intestinal morphometry of broiler chickens from 14 to 28 days of age.


Objetivou-se, com essa pesquisa, avaliar o desempenho produtivo, o rendimento de carcaça e a morfometria intestinal de frangos de corte com dietas submetidas à inclusão do óleo de buriti. Trata-se de um alimento energético que pode ser utilizado na alimentação de frangos visando substituir o óleo de soja, o qual apresenta alto custo na produção. O óleo de buriti ainda possui suas propriedades anti-inflamatórias, antioxidantes, antimicrobianas, podendo conferir benefícios na alimentação de frangos. Foram utilizados 180 frangos de corte machos, da linhagem Ross, distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com três tratamentos e seis repetições de 10 aves por unidade experimental. A fase experimental ocorreu de 14 a 28 dias, e os níveis 0%, 0,75% e 1,50% de óleo de buriti foram inseridos na ração à base de milho e soja. Pode-se inferir que as dietas à base de óleo de buriti na dieta com inserção dos níveis de 0%, 0,75% e 1,50% não diferiram significativamente para as variáveis de desempenho produtivo, mas, em relação ao rendimento produtivo, houve uma diferença significativa para o rendimento de carcaça, acompanhado de maior disposição de gordura abdominal, gordura de sobrecoxa e coração, efeito comum na utilização de óleos. Apesar de não serem observadas diferenças estatísticas para a maioria das variáveis na avaliação da morfometria intestinal, houve aumento na profundidade de cripta do duodeno e do íleo, bem como aumento da camada muscular do duodeno e do jejuno, que podem ter sido provocados por alguma injúria no intestino e não por efeito direto do óleo de buriti. Nas demais variáveis, não houve diferença entre os tratamentos, e conclui-se que o óleo de buriti não causou prejuízo ao desempenho, ao rendimento e à morfometria intestinal de frangos de corte no período de 14 a 28 dias de idade.

The objective this study was to identify differences in the morphogenic patterns of four Urochloa brizantha cultivars (marandu, piatã, xaraés and paiaguás grasses) during the stockpiling period. A completely randomized design was used, with three replications, in experimental plots of 9m². The evaluations took place over 2 years. The grasses were stockpiled for 92 (Year 1) and 95 (Year 2) days. The leaf appearance rate of paiaguás grass was higher, compared to other grasses. In Year 1, the stem elongation rate of xaraés grass was higher than other grasses. At the end of stockpiling period of Year 1, the tiller population density (TPD) was higher in the paiaguás grass, intermediate in the xaraés and marandu grasses and lower in the piatã grass. At the end of the stockpiling period in Year 2, TPD was higher in the paiaguás grass canopy, intermediate in the marandu and piatã grasses canopies, and lower in the xaraés grass canopy. Paiaguás grass has greater leaf growth during the stockpiling period and is therefore suitable for use under stockpiled grazing. Xaraés grass has high stem elongation during the stockpiling period, which is why its use under stockpiled grazing must be accompanied by adjustments in pasture management.(AU)


O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar diferenças nos padrões morfogênicos de quatro cultivares de Urochloa brizantha (marandu, piatã, xaraés e paiaguás) durante o período de diferimento. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com três repetições, em parcelas experimentais de 9m². As avaliações ocorreram por dois anos. Os capins foram diferidos por 92 (Ano 1) e 95 (Ano 2) dias. A taxa de aparecimento foliar do capim-paiaguás foi maior, em comparação aos demais capins. No Ano 1, a taxa de alongamento do colmo do capim-xaraés foi superior aos demais capins. No final do diferimento do Ano 1, a densidade populacional de perfilho (DPP) foi maior no capim-paiaguás, intermediária nos capins xaraés e marandu e inferior no capim-piatã. No fim do período de diferimento do Ano 2, a DPP foi superior no dossel de capim-paiaguás, intermediária nos dosséis dos capins marandu e piatã, e menor no dossel de capim-xaraés. O capim-paiaguás tem maior crescimento foliar durante o período de diferimento, sendo, portanto, apropriado para uso sob pastejo diferido. O capim-xaraés apresenta elevado alongamento de colmo durante o período de diferimento, razão pela qual seu uso sob pastejo diferido deve vir acompanhado de ajustes no manejo da pastagem.(AU)

AIMS: To investigate the probiotic potential of yeasts isolated from naturally fermented Brazilian table olives. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighteen yeast strains were tested in terms of: safety; survival of gastrointestinal and digestion conditions; antimicrobial activity; cellular hydrophobicity; autoaggregation ability and adhesion to epithelial cells; coaggregation and inhibition of pathogenic bacteria adhesion. Six yeasts showed favourable results for all probiotic attributes: Saccharomyces cerevisiae CCMA 1746, Pichia guilliermondii CCMA 1753, Candida orthopsilosis CCMA 1748, Candida tropicalis CCMA 1751, Meyerozyma caribbica CCMA 1758 and Debaryomyces hansenii CCMA 1761. These yeasts demonstrated resistance to 37°C, pH 2·0 and bile salts, and survived in vitro digestion (≥106  CFU per ml). Furthermore, the yeasts exhibited a hydrophobic cell surface (42·5-92·2%), autoaggregation capacity (41·0-91·0%) and adhesion to Caco-2 (62·0-82·8%) and HT-29 (57·6-87·3%) epithelial cell lines. Also, the strains showed antimicrobial activity against Salmonella Enteritidis as well as the ability to coaggregate and reduce the adhesion of this pathogen to intestinal cells. CONCLUSIONS: Autochthonous yeasts from naturally fermented Brazilian table olives have probiotic properties, with potential for development of new probiotic food products. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: These data are important and contribute to the knowledge of new potential probiotic yeasts capable of surviving gastrointestinal tract conditions and inhibiting pathogenic bacteria.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are responsible for over 500,000 deaths annually and are characterized by multiple disabilities. Leishmaniasis and Chagas diseases are among the most severe NTDs, and are caused by the Leishmania sp and Trypanosoma cruzi, respectively. Glucantime, pentamidine, and miltefosine are commonly used to treat leishmaniasis, whereas nifurtimox, benznidazole are current treatments for Chagas disease. However, these treatments are associated with drug resistance and severe side effects. Hence, the development of synthetic products, especially those containing N02, F, or Cl, are known to improve biological activity. The present work summarizes the information on the antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activity of nitro-, chloro-, and fluorosynthetic derivatives. Scientific publications referring to halogenated derivatives in relation to antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activities were hand-searched in databases such as SciFinder, Wiley, Science Direct, PubMed, ACS, Springer, Scielo, and so on. According to the literature information, more than 90 compounds were predicted as lead molecules with reference to their IC50/EC50 values in in vitro studies. It is worth mentioning that only active compounds with known cytotoxic effects against mammalian cells were considered in the present study. The observed activity was attributed to the presence of nitro-, fluoro-, and chloro-groups in the compound backbone. All in all, nitro and halogenated derivatives are active antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal compounds and can serve as the baseline for the development of new drugs against leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. However, efforts in in vitro and in vivo toxicity studies of the active synthetic compounds is still needed. Pharmacokinetic studies and the mechanism of action of the promising compounds need to be explored. The use of new catalysts and chemical transformation can afford unexplored halogenated compounds with improved antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activity.

Non-relativistic and Douglas-Kroll-Hess (DKH) basis sets augmented with diffuse functions for He, Ca, Sr, Ba, and lanthanides are generated. These sets are appropriated to describe electrons away from the nuclei. Using the DKH augmented sets along with the B3LYP functional, bond lengths, dissociation energies, harmonic vibrational frequencies, adiabatic ionization potentials, adiabatic electron affinities, and dipole moments for CaH, SrH, and BaH are computed. These results agree well with the most recent experimental and benchmark theoretical data published in the literature. The DKH mean dipole polarizabilities reported in this work for some elements are close to the recommended values. Scalar relativistic effects are also estimated.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease associated with several clinical manifestations, including cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral forms. As currently available drugs have some limitations (toxicity, resistance, among others), the target-based identification has been an important approach to develop new leads against leishmaniasis. The present study aims to identify targets involved in the pharmacological action of potent antileishmanial compounds. METHODS: The literature information regarding molecular interactions of antileishmanial compounds studied over the past half-decade is discussed. The information was obtained from databases such as Wiley, SciFinder, Science Direct, National Library of Medicine, American Chemical Society, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Scopus, Springer, Google Scholar, Web of Science, etc. Results: Numerous in vitro antileishmanial compounds showed affinity and selective interactions with enzymes such as arginase, pteridine reductase 1, trypanothione reductase, pyruvate kinase, among others, which are crucial for the survival and virulence of the Leishmania parasite. CONCLUSION: The in-silico activity of small molecules (enzymes, proteins, among others) might be used as pharmacological tools to develop candidate compounds for the treatment of leishmaniasis. As some pharmacologically active compounds may act on more than one target, additional studies of the mechanism (s) of action of potent antileishmanial compounds might help to better understand their pharmacological action. Also, the optimization of promising antileishmanial compounds might improve their biological activity.

1. The physical factors that involve artificial incubation determine embryonic growth and hatching of broiler chicks, and have important implications for the poultry production chain and chick welfare. This study explored the effects of sound exposure on incubation responses (hatching, embryonic development and chick quality).2. A 2 × 2 factorial experiment with the factors 'sound pressure level' (at 70 and 90 dB) and 'species-specific vocalisations' (at 75dB - 85dB) was performed in four experimental incubators (loaded with 90 eggs each) for eight consecutive cycles of incubation, totalling 2880 Cobb-500® broiler breeder eggs.3. Embryonic growth was not influenced by any experimental factor, but the highest sound pressure level (90 dB) led to earlier hatching, higher hatchability, better chick quality and lower weight at hatching. Additional effects of species-specific vocalisations were found at 70 dB noise, which caused early hatching and better chick quality.4. It was concluded that the loud noise found in commercial hatcheries (at 90 dB) can be beneficial. Furthermore, the presence of species-specific vocalisations could improve the hatching time and chick quality from experimental incubators (at 70 dB). However, this would not provide additional benefits in commercial hatcheries, due to the machinery noise masking them.

Nonrelativistic and relativistic (Douglas-Kroll-Hess, DKH) segmented all-electron Gaussian basis sets of valence triple zeta quality plus polarization functions (TZP) for the lanthanides were developed. As some atomic and molecular properties depend on a good description of the electrons far from the nuclei, these basis sets are augmented with diffuse functions, giving rise to the augmented TZP (ATZP) and ATZP-DKH basis sets. At the DKH level of theory, the B3LYP hybrid functional in conjunction with the TZP-DKH basis set were used to calculate the atomic charges and valence orbital populations of the lanthanide and oxygen atoms, the bond lengths, and the equilibrium dissociation energies of lanthanide monoxides. The DKH-B3LYP/ATZP-DKH polarizability of Yb and the DKH-M06/TZP-DKH first ionization energies of the lanthanides are also reported. Compared with the values obtained with a larger all-electron basis set, and theoretical and experimental data found in the literature, data obtained by our compact basis sets are verified to be accurate and reliable. Unlike effective core potential valence basis sets, our basis sets can also be employed in molecular property calculations that involve the simultaneous treatment of core and valence electrons. BACKGROUND: Flavones are one of the main subclasses of flavonoids with diverse pharmacological properties. They have been reported to possess antimalarial, antimicrobial, anti-tuberculosis, anti-allergic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory activities, among others. OBJECTIVE: The present review summarizes the recent information on the pharmacological properties of naturally occurring and synthetic flavones. METHODS: Scientific publications referring to natural and synthetic flavones in relation to their biological activities were hand-searched in databases such as SciFinder, PubMed (National Library of Medicine), Science Direct, Wiley, ACS, SciELO, Springer, among others. RESULTS: As per the literature, seventy-five natural flavones were predicted as active compounds with reference to their IC50 (<20 µg/mL) in in vitro studies. Also, synthetic flavones were found active against several diseases. CONCLUSION: As per the literature, flavones are important sources for the potential treatment of multifactorial diseases. However, efforts toward the development of flavone-based therapeutic agents are still needed. The appearance of new catalysts and chemical transformations is expected to provide avenues for the synthesis of unexplored flavones, leading to the discovery of flavones with new properties and biological activities.

Inhalation of cannabis smoke is its most common use and the pulmonary complications of its use may be the single most common form of drug-induced pulmonary disease worldwide. However, the role of cannabis consumption in asthma patients and allergic clinical situations still remains controversial. To review the evidence of asthma and allergic diseases associated with the use of marijuana, we conducted a search of English, Spanish, and Portuguese medical using the search terms asthma, allergy, marijuana, marihuana, and cannabis. Entries made between January 1970 and March 2017 were retrieved. Several papers have shown the relationship between marijuana use and increase in asthma and other allergic diseases symptoms, as well as the increased frequency of medical visits. This narrative review emphasizes the importance to consider cannabis as a precipitating factor for acute asthma and allergic attacks in clinical practice. Although smoking of marijuana may cause respiratory symptoms, there is a need for more studies to elucidate many aspects in allergic asthma patients, especially considering the long-term use of the drug. These patients should avoid using marijuana and be oriented about individual health risks, possible dangers of second-hand smoke exposure, underage use, safe storage, and the over smoking of marijuana.

INTRODUCCIÓN La fibromialgia es una condición reumática no articular caracterizada por distintos síntomas, donde destacan principalmente el dolor, sensibilidad muscular, fatiga, insomnio, rigidez matinal, depresión y disminución de la funcionalidad cotidiana. Aún no existe claridad respecto de su etiología, pero se ha planteado que la deficiencia de elementos tales como el magnesio podría tener un rol tanto en la fisiopatología de la fibromialgia como también contribuir a sus síntomas clínicos. MÉTODOS Realizamos una búsqueda en Epistemonikos, la mayor base de datos de revisiones sistemáticas en salud, la cual es mantenida mediante el cribado de múltiples fuentes de información, incluyendo MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, entre otras. Extrajimos los datos desde las revisiones identificadas, analizamos los datos de los estudios primarios, realizamos un metanálisis y preparamos una tabla de resumen de los resultados utilizando el método GRADE. RESULTADOS Y CONCLUSIONES Identificamos siete revisiones sistemáticas que en conjunto incluyeron 11 estudios primarios, de los cuales solo uno corresponde a un ensayo aleatorizado. Concluimos que el uso de magnesio y ácido málico en pacientes con fibromialgia tiene poco o nulo impacto en dolor y en los síntomas depresivos.


INTRODUCTION Fibromyalgia is characterized by myalgia and a combination of different symptoms including pain, fatigue, insomnia, morning rigidity, depression and a reduction in every-day functioning. Its aetiology is not clear, but it has been suggested that deficiency in certain minerals such as magnesium may play a role both in the physiopathology and in contributing to the symptoms. METHODS We searched in Epistemonikos, the largest database of systematic reviews in health, which is maintained by screening multiple information sources, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, among others. We extracted data from the systematic reviews, reanalyzed data of primary studies, conducted a meta-analysis and generated a summary of findings table using the GRADE approach. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS We identified seven systematic reviews which included 11 primary studies of which one was a randomized trial. Our conclusion is that the use of magnesium and malic acid in patients with fibromyalgia makes little or no difference on pain and on depressive symptoms.

Molecular markers are tools used to improve genetic gains. The objective of this study was to analyze the security of alleles of molecular marker genes for characteristics of economic interest in a pure population of pigs. After the extraction of DNA from the hair of 272 Large White matrices, the allele and genotype frequency of single nucleotide polymorphism was performed using the ARMS-PCR Multiplex technique in the DGAT1, LEPR, H-FABP, MC4R, and SREBF1 genes using RFLP-PCR for the GH gene. After capillary electrophoresis in an automated DNA sequencing of the DGAT1, LEPR, H-FABP, and SREBF1 genes, no polymorphisms were found. Only the MC4R marker presented 100% heterozygosity. For the GH gene, 209 of the initial population samples were genotyped. The PCR product (605 bp) was digested with the restriction enzyme DdeI, with fragments being of 335, 148, and 122 bp for the D1 allele and 457 and 148 bp for the D2 allele. The genotypic frequency obtained of D1D2 was 88% and of D2D2 was 22%. The D1 allele presented a frequency of 11% and the D2 allele of 89%. The high intensity of selection for commercial breeds justifies the absence or the low number of polymorphisms for the genes studied.

Photodynamic therapy is an alternative treatment for cancer based on cellular uptake of a photosensitizer, illuminated with an appropriate wavelength in the presence of oxygen. A cascade of reactions generates reactive oxygen species leading to cell death. Using carbodiimide chemistry, chlorin e6 (Ce6) was covalently bonded to thiourea, and (via the sulphur end group) to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), forming the Ce6-AuNP complex. Ce6 absorbs in the range 650-680nm, where the coefficient of biological tissue absorption is low (part of the therapeutic window), which is ideal for biological application. Transmission Electron Microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Zeta potential measurements were completed to characterize the Ce6-AuNP complex. The bare AuNPs have an average diameter of 18±4nm. A line of human breast carcinoma cells (MDA-MB-468) was used to determine whether Ce6 functionalization to AuNPs potentiate its activity. Trypan blue assays were used to assess cell viability. In the absence of light, Ce6 either alone or bounded to AuNPs was not cytotoxic. When irradiated at 660nm, the cytotoxicity of Ce6-AuNP was higher than Ce6 alone for MDA-MB-468 cells using 4h incubation. AuNPs without Ce6 showed no cytotoxic.
