Purpose Compare postoperative outcomes in cataract surgery between eyes with standard drop regimen versus dropless protocol by residents. Design Retrospective cohort study between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2020. Methods The study was performed at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital in Houston, Harris County, Texas. A total of 547 eyes (234 dropless vs. 313 standard) with phacoemulsification cataract surgery and minimum of 1-month follow-up with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were included. Dropless received 40 mg sub-Tenon's triamcinolone and intracameral moxifloxacin. Patients were followed at postoperative day 1 (POD1), week 1 (POW1), and month 1 (POM1). Postoperative rate of BCVA better than 20/40 (Good vision) and rate of complications were compared between groups. Results Good vision on POM1 in dropless (77.8%) was noninferior to standard (75.1%, p = 0.80). Complication rate in dropless (28.6%) was noninferior to standard (24.0%, p = 0.13). Intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation on POD1 ( p = 0.041) and anterior chamber (AC) cells on POW1 and POM1 ( p < 0.001) were more frequent in dropless. Mean spherical equivalent at POM1 was better in dropless (-0.37 D [±0.81 D]) compared with standard (-0.61D [±0.77 D], p = 0.001). Early posterior capsular opacification (early PCO) was more frequent in dropless ( p = 0.042). Conclusions Postoperative rate of BCVA better than 20/40 and rate of postoperative complications were noninferior, although dropless had higher rates of AC inflammation, IOP elevation, and early PCO.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic systemic inflammatory condition that can potentially adversely affect surgical outcomes in patients receiving elective ophthalmic procedures. In this case series, 21 eyes of 11 patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease underwent laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), or small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). Their surgical outcomes were followed up for an average of 8.9 ± 4.6 months. All the patients in this study did well, with 100% of eyes corrected for distance vision achieving uncorrected distance visual acuity 20/20 by postoperative month three. Common symptoms noted during the postoperative period included dry eyes, irritation, foreign body sensation, and blurry vision, all of which improved in prevalence and severity over the follow-up period, and none of the patients experienced a flare-up of their disease. Despite the successful outcomes in these patients, the authors recognize the inherent risks of operating on patients with IBD. Currently, there are no consensus guidelines for clinicians to follow to ensure that they are adequately screening these patients for eligibility, so the authors are suggesting a relevant, focused review of systems, a brief IBD history-related questionnaire, and a preliminary surgical decision-making flowchart for use in surgical evaluation.

We announce the complete genome sequences of 14 Serratia bacteriophages isolated from wastewater treatment plants. These phages define two previously undescribed types which we call the Carrot-like phage cluster (phages Carrot, BigDog, LittleDog, Niamh, Opt-148, Opt-169, PhooPhighters, Rovert, Serratianator, Stoker, Swain, and Ulliraptor) and Tlacuache-like phage cluster (Tlacuache and Opt-155).

We present here the complete genomes of 18 phages that infect Paenibacillus larvae, the causative agent of American foulbrood in honeybees. The phages were isolated between 2014 and 2016 as part of an undergraduate phage discovery course at Brigham Young University. The phages were isolated primarily from bee debris and lysogens.
