Although simple γ-lactones and γ-lactams have received considerable attention from the synthetic community, particularly due to their relevance in biological and medicinal contexts, stereoselective synthetic approaches to more densely substituted derivatives remain scarce. The in-depth study presented herein, showcasing a straightforward method for the stereocontrolled synthesis of γ-lactones and γ-lactams, builds on and considerably expands the stereodivergent synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds by a ynamide/vinyl sulfoxide coupling. A full mechanistic and computational study of the rearrangement was conducted, uncovering the role of all of the reaction components and providing a rationale for stereoselection. The broad applicability of the developed tools to streamlining synthesis is demonstrated by concise enantioselective total syntheses of (+)-nephrosteranic acid, (+)-rocellaric acid, and (+)-nephromopsinic acid.

Subcutaneous emphysema, the presence of air in the subcutaneous layer of the skin, is a possible result of surgical, infectious, or spontaneous etiologies. Although usually self-limiting, the development of subcutaneous emphysema in the perioperative period has been associated with delayed extubation and the development of complications such as pneumomediastinum, pneumoperitoneum, and pneumothorax and can worsen clinical outcomes in these patients. Here, we report the case of a 57-year-old male patient who presented to the operating room (OR) for a robotic total colectomy due to Lynch syndrome. The procedure was complicated by the development of diffuse, severe subcutaneous emphysema, which was recognized by palpable crepitus and obscuration of anatomical landmarks during an attempted transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block for pain control prior to patient extubation. The decision was made to leave the patient intubated and managed postoperatively in the ICU, where radiographic and computerized tomography (CT) scans confirmed the severity of subcutaneous emphysema. Hemodynamic and respiratory status were managed in the ICU and on postoperative day 3 the patient passed an endotracheal cuff leak test and was extubated. The patient was transferred to a surgical step-down on postoperative day 7 and following the resolution of ileus and acute kidney injury (AKI), he was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 17.

Cutaneous metastatic disease from primary gastric cancer is quite scarce, often going unrecognized. In this case, the patient presented with an expanding rash that was biopsied, with findings concerning for metastatic adenocarcinoma from a suspected luminal upper gastrointestinal origin. Subsequent biopsies during an esophagogastroduodenoscopy confirmed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with signet ring cell features, most likely from an upper gastrointestinal primary (gastric vs gastroesophageal junction). We review this case to help providers identify signet cell type cutaneous metastases of gastric cancer quickly to improve patient outcomes.

Background: Some patients with proximal rectus femoris (PRF) avulsions require surgical treatment after failed nonoperative treatment. There is no consensus on the superiority of suture anchor repair with the suture-bridge repair (SBR) technique versus tenodesis repair (TR) for PRF avulsions. Purpose: To compare the failure load and elongation at failure between SBR and TR and to compare the stiffness of these 2 repair techniques versus the native state. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Seven pairs of human cadaveric hemipelvises were dissected to the PRF and sartorius origins. Each specimen underwent preconditioning followed by a distraction test to determine the stiffness of the native specimen. One specimen of each pair received one of the repair methods (SBR or TR), while the other specimen in the pair received the other repair technique. After repair, each specimen underwent preconditioning followed by a pull to failure. The failure load, elongation at failure, stiffness, mode of failure, and stiffness as a percentage of the native state were determined for each repair. Results: The SBR group exhibited a stronger failure load (223 ± 51 N vs 153 ± 32 N for the TR group; P = .0116) and significantly higher stiffness as a percentage from the native state (70.4% ± 19% vs 33.8% ± 15.5% for the TR group; P = .0085). While the stiffness of the repair state in the SBR group (41.5 ± 9.4 N/mm) was not significantly different from that of the native state (66.2 ± 36 N/mm), the stiffness of the repair state in the TR group (20.3 ± 7.5 N/mm) was significantly lower compared with that of the native state (65.4 ± 22.1 N/mm; P < .001) and repair state in the SBR group (41.5 ± 9.4 N/mm; P = .02). The SBR group primarily failed at the repair site (71%), and the TR group primarily failed at the suture-sartorius interface (43%) and at the muscle (29%). Conclusion: SBR and TR specimens were significantly weaker than the native tendon. The stiffness of the SBR was equivalent to that of the native tendon, while TR was significantly less stiff than the native tendon. The SBR was superior to TR in terms of failure load, stiffness, and percentage stiffness from the native state. Clinical Relevance: SBR may be a better surgical option than TR to optimize failure load and stiffness for PRF avulsions.

Introduction Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) is an effective treatment for end-stage ankle arthritis. Recent surgical and technological advances have led to a significant increase in the surgical volume of TAA. While a majority of ankle arthritis is post-traumatic in nature, other causes include autoimmune or inflammatory conditions. Medical management of these conditions frequently requires chronic corticosteroid administration, which is a well-established risk factor for complications following surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between chronic preoperative steroid use and postoperative complications following TAA. Methods The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement (NSQIP) database was analyzed to identify all patients who underwent TAA between 2015 and 2020. Patient characteristics including demographics, comorbidities, surgical characteristics, and 30-day postoperative complication data were collected. The data was analyzed using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression to identify all postoperative complications associated with chronic preoperative steroid use. Results A total of 1,606 patients were included in this study: 1,533 (95.5%) were included in the non-steroid cohort, and 73 (4.5%) were included in the chronic steroid cohort. Chronic steroid use was significantly associated with female sex (p < 0.001) and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) ≥3 (p < 0.001). Chronic steroid use was not associated with superficial surgical site infection (SSI) (p = 0.634) or wound dehiscence (p = 0.999). The postoperative complication that was significantly associated with chronic steroid use was sepsis (p = 0.031). After adjusting for female sex and the ASA grade, chronic steroid use was found to be independently associated with sepsis (p = 0.013). Conclusion Preoperative chronic steroid use is not associated with superficial SSI or wound dehiscence within 30 days following TAA. As TAA becomes a more attractive alternative to ankle arthrodesis, a better understanding of preoperative risk factors can aid in widening indications and knowing what patients are at risk for complications.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research has called attention to limitations to reproductive autonomy in both women who are socially disadvantaged and in those who have had contact with the criminal legal (CL) system. However, it is unclear whether CL system contact influences contraceptive use patterns and how these processes unfold. We utilize a mixed-methods approach to investigate whether history of arrest is associated with receipt of contraceptive counseling, use of long-term contraception, sterilization, and subsequent desire for reversal of sterilization. We further consider how agents in and around the CL system may influence women's reproductive decisions and outcomes (856 survey respondents; 10 interviewees). RESULTS: We observe that women who have been arrested more commonly report receipt of contraceptive counseling and sterilization. They are also significantly more likely to want their sterilization reversed. Our in-depth interviews suggest that women with CL contact experience considerable shame, and in some cases, coercion to limit fertility from various agents in and outside the criminal legal system including medical providers, Parole/Probation Officers (POs), guards, and family members. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest the need for ongoing attention to how exposure to this system may promote uneven use of certain forms of contraception and dissatisfaction, i.e., desire for reversal of sterilization, among these women. Findings further suggest that de-emphasizing the CL system as a means through which to address reproductive needs should be considered.

Amyloidosis is a group of rare deposition diseases marked by the accumulation of abnormal fibrillar proteins in the extracellular space of various tissues. In both AL and AA amyloidosis, the most common variants, isolated involvement to any one organ is uncommon and involvement to the colon alone is especially rare. We present the case of a patient who was initially found to have AL amyloidosis on prior screening colonoscopy that was reconfirmed several years with repeat evaluation for chronic constipation. This disease process is often insidious and can be overlooked by providers given the lack of overwhelming symptoms.

Esophageal cancer is common and typically metastasizes to the liver, lung, and lymph nodes. Reproductive tract metastases are extremely rare. In fact, to the best of our knowledge, only 2 cases of esophageal carcinoma metastasizing to the ovaries have been reported. Thus, increased recognition of unusual metastatic sites is necessary to decrease the morbidity and mortality from distant esophageal metastases. We present a case of ovarian and fallopian tube metastases from esophageal adenocarcinoma in a 59-year-old woman.

Purpose: The incidence of distal radius fractures (DRFs) in the United States is more than 640,000 cases per year and is projected to increase. The overall prevalence of anemia in the United States increased from 5.71% in 2005 to 6.86% in 2018. Therefore, preoperative anemia may be an important risk factor to consider before surgical fixation of a distal radius fracture. The purpose of this study was to investigate preoperative anemia and its association with short-term complications after surgical treatment of DRFs. Methods: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried for all patients who underwent open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of DRFs between 2015 and 2020. The initial pool of patients was divided into cohorts based on preoperative hematocrit. Multivariate logistic regression, adjusted for all significantly associated patient demographics and comorbidities, was used to identify associations between preoperative anemia and postoperative complications after ORIF of DRFs. Results: A total of 22,923 patients who underwent ORIF of DRFs were identified in National Surgical Quality Improvement Program from 2015 to 2020. Of the 12,068 patients remaining after exclusion criteria, 9,616 (79.7%) patients were included in the normal cohort, 2,238 (18.5%) patients were included in the mild anemia cohort, and 214 (1.8%) patients were included in the severe anemia cohort. Compared with the reference cohort, patients with any anemia were independently associated with higher rates of reintubation (odds ratio [OR], 6.51; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.29-32.80; P = .023), blood transfusion (OR, 11.83; 95% CI, 3.95-35.45; P < .001), septic shock (OR, 10.76; 95% CI, 1.19-97.02; P = .034), readmission (OR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.60-2.76; P < .001), nonhome discharge (OR, 2.22; 95% CI, 1.84-2.68; P < .001), and mortality (OR, 2.70; 1.03-7.07; P = .043). Conclusions: Preoperative anemia, both mild and severe, were clinically significant predictors for postoperative complications within 30-day after ORIF of DRFs. Severe anemia was associated with higher rates of blood transfusion, nonhome discharge, and mortality compared with mild anemia. Type of study/level of evidence: Prognostic III.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is a common form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Although extranodal involvement of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is common in lymphomas, primary GI-FL confined to the GI tract is relatively rare. The disease process is typically indolent in nature and usually incidentally found. Among this subset of patients, the duodenum and terminal ileum tend to be the most common site of origin. Here, we present a rare case of primary multifocal GI-FL that found incidentally during routine colonoscopy with subsequent esophagogastroduodenoscopy and video capsule endoscopy revealing duodenal, jejunal, and sigmoid colon involvement.

Background: In the Latarjet procedure, the ideal placement of the coracoid graft in the medial-lateral position is flush with the anterior glenoid rim. However, the ideal position of the graft in the superior-inferior position (sagittal plane) for restoring glenohumeral joint stability is still controversial. Purpose: To compare coracoid graft clockface positions between the traditional 3 to 5 o'clock and a more inferior (for the right shoulder) 4 to 6 o'clock with regard to glenohumeral joint stability in the Latarjet procedure. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A total of 10 fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were tested in a dynamic, custom-built robotic shoulder model. Each shoulder was loaded with a 50-N compressive load while an 80-N force was applied in the anteroinferior axes at 90° of abduction and 60° of shoulder external rotation. Four conditions were tested: (1) intact, (2) 6-mm glenoid bone loss (GBL), (3) Latarjet procedure fixed at 3- to 5-o'clock position, and (4) Latarjet procedure fixed at 4- to 6-o'clock position. The stability ratio (SR) and degree of lateral humeral displacement (LHD) were recorded. A 1-factor random-intercepts linear mixed-effects model and Tukey method were used for statistical analysis. Results: Compared with the intact state (1.77 ± 0.11), the SR was significantly lower after creating a 6-mm GBL (1.14 ± 0.61, P = .009), with no significant difference in SR after Latarjet 3 to 5 o'clock (1.51 ± 0.70, P = .51) or 4 to 6 o'clock (1.55 ± 0.68, P = .52). Compared with the intact state (6.48 ± 2.24 mm), LHD decreased significantly after GBL (3.16 ± 1.56 mm, P < .001) and Latarjet 4 to 6 o'clock (5.48 ± 3.39 mm, P < .001). Displacement decreased significantly after Latarjet 3 to 5 o'clock (4.78 ± 2.50 mm, P = .04) compared with the intact state but not after Latarjet 4 to 6 o'clock (P = .71). Conclusion: The Latarjet procedure in both coracoid graft positions (3-5 and 4-6 o'clock) restored the SR to the values measured in the intact state. A more inferior graft position (fixed at 4-6 o'clock) may improve shoulder biomechanics, but additional work is needed to establish clinical relevance. Clinical Relevance: An inferior coracoid graft fixation, the 4- to 6-o'clock position, may benefit in restoring normal shoulder biomechanics after the Latarjet procedure.

OBJECTIVE: The centrosome is universally recognized as the microtubule organizing center of animal cells, but emerging evidence suggests that it has other important functions including primary cilia formation, DNA damage checkpoints, and cell cycle progression. Despite this, the role of individual components of the centrosome remains unclear. Previous studies suggest that one component, centriolin, has an important function in cytokinesis and cell cycle progression, although its exact role in these processes is not known. To determine how centriolin influences the progression through the cell cycle, we sought to identify interacting partners that may be involved in regulating its function. RESULTS: This study provides evidence that the ubiquitin E3 ligase HectD1 binds to centriolin and that this association likely accounts for our observation that HectD1 co-localizes with centriolin at the centrosome during mitosis. In addition to its centrosomal localization, we also show that the expression of HectD1 fluctuates throughout the cell cycle, with the highest levels during mitosis, coinciding with a marked reduction in centriolin expression. We propose that the interaction between HectD1 and centriolin may be necessary for normal cell cycle progression and we speculate that this function may involve HectD1-mediated degradation of centriolin.

BACKGROUND: Surgical reconstruction using autografts is often required in treating chronic proximal hamstring injuries where the hamstring has retracted >5 cm. There is a paucity of evidence that evaluates reconstructive procedures using the 2 most popular autografts, distal hamstring and fascia lata. PURPOSE: To (1) compare failure load and elongation at failure between the proximal hamstring tendon reconstruction with distal hamstring and fascia lata grafts and (2) compare the stiffness between these reconstructions and the native state. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Seven pairs of human cadaveric hemipelvises (mean age, 60.4 ± 5.0 years; 6 male, 1 female) with no evidence of previous injury or abnormality were dissected to the proximal hamstring origin. Through use of a dynamic tensile testing system, each specimen underwent preconditioning followed by a distraction test to determine the native specimen stiffness. Each pair of specimens was assigned to undergo proximal hamstring reconstruction with distal hamstring and reconstruction with fascia lata. Each specimen then underwent preconditioning followed by pull to failure. The failure load, elongation at failure, mode of failure, and stiffness were determined for each repair. RESULTS: The distal hamstring group exhibited a greater failure load (mean, 334 ± 108 N; P = .031) and higher stiffness (mean, 47.6 ± 16.0 N/mm; P = .009) compared with the fascia lata group (mean, 179 ± 78 N and 23.0 ± 11.2 N/mm, respectively). Although the stiffness of the repair state in the distal hamstring group (mean, 61.4 ± 13.4 N/mm) was not significantly different from that of the native state (mean, 47.6 ± 16.0 N/mm), the stiffness of the repair state in the fascia lata group (mean, 23.0 ± 11.2 N/mm) was significantly lower than that of the native state (mean, 60.1 ± 17.7 N/mm) (P < .0001). The elongation at failure of the distal hamstring graft group (mean, 33.0 ± 6.6 mm) was not significantly different from that of the fascia lata graft group (mean, 29.2 ± 14.9 mm) (P = .58). The most common modes of failure for the distal hamstring group (29% each) were at the repair site, at the graft-muscle interface, and at the muscle, while the most common modes of failure for the fascia lata graft were at the tendon-graft interface. CONCLUSION: The distal hamstring group achieved higher failure load and stiffness than the fascia lata group, and stiffness of the distal hamstring group was not significantly different from that of the native tendon. Elongation at failure was not different between repair techniques. Although distal hamstring graft failure predominantly occurred in 3 distinct locations, failure of the fascia lata repair occurred predominantly at the tendon-graft interface. These cadaveric results suggest that it may be more clinically appropriate to use distal hamstring versus fascia lata for proximal hamstring reconstruction. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our time-zero study suggests that the proximal hamstring reconstruction with distal hamstring could be the preferred surgical treatment for chronic hamstring injury over reconstruction with fascia lata. The failure load of reconstruction with distal hamstring was inferior to that of primary suture anchor, suggesting that rehabilitation after reconstruction should not be more aggressive than the standard postoperative rehabilitation protocol for acute repair.

Background: Humeral head reconstruction with fresh osteochondral allografts (OCA) serves as a potential treatment option for anatomic reconstruction. More specifically, talus OCA is a promising graft source because of its high congruency with a dense cartilaginous surface. Purpose: To analyze the surface geometry of the talus OCA plug augmentation for the management of shoulder instability with varying sizes of Hill-Sachs lesions (HSLs). Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Seven fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were tested in this study. The humeral heads were analyzed using actual patients' computed tomography scans. Surface laser scan analysis was performed on 7 testing states: (1) native state; (2) small HSL; (3) talus OCA augmentation for small HSL; (4) medium HSL; (5) talus OCA augmentation for medium HSL; (6) large HSL; and (7) talus OCA augmentation for large HSL. OCA plugs were harvested from the talus allograft and placed in the most medial and superior aspect of each HSL lesion. Surface congruency was calculated as the mean absolute error and the root mean squared error in the distance. A 1-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the effects of the difference in the HSL size and associated talus OCA plugs on surface congruency and the HSL surface area. Results: The surface area analysis of the humeral head with the large (1469 ± 75 mm2), medium (1391 ± 81 mm2), and small (1230 ± 54 mm2) HSLs exhibited significantly higher surface areas than the native state (1007 ± 88 mm2; P < .001 for all sizes). The native state exhibited significantly lower surface areas as compared with after talus OCA augmentation for large HSLs (1235 ± 63 mm2; P < .001) but not for small or medium HSLs. Talus OCA augmentation yielded improved surface areas and congruency after treatment in small, medium, and large HSLs (P < .001). Conclusion: Talus OCA plug augmentation restored surface area and congruency across all tested HSLs, and the surface area was best improved with the most common HSLs-small and medium. Clinical Relevance: Talus OCA plugs may provide a viable option for restoring congruity of the shoulder in patients with recurrent anterior glenohumeral instability and an HSL.

Background: The incidence of correctional surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD) has increased significantly over the past 2 decades. Pelvic incidence, an angular measurement, is the gold standard pelvic parameter and is used to classify spinal shapes into Roussouly types. Current literature states that restoration of the spine to its original Roussouly classification optimizes outcomes. We propose a new pelvic parameter, pelvic index, as a length measurement to complement pelvic incidence in more accurately characterizing Roussouly types. Methods: This study is a retrospective evaluation of sagittal spinal radiographs of 208 patients who were assessed by a single fellowship trained orthopedic spine surgeon between January and December 2020. Measurements included pelvic incidence, sacroacetabular distance, and L5 vertebral height. Pelvic index was calculated as the ratio of sacroacetabular distance to L5 height. Each spine was also classified into one of the Roussouly types: 1, 2, 3 anteverted pelvis (AP), 3, or 4. The 2 pelvic parameters were compared between groups to assess their ability to differentiate between Roussouly types. Results: Of the 208 patients included, 103 (49.5%) were female and 105 (50.5%) were male. The mean pelvic incidence was 54.9 ± 12.3° and the mean pelvic index was 3.99 ± 0.38. The difference in mean pelvic index was statistically significant between types 1 and 2 (0.15; p=.046) and between types 1 and 3 AP (0.19; p=.029). It was not statistically significant between types 3 and 4 (0.05; p=.251). However, in terms of pelvic incidence, the mean difference was statistically significant only between types 3 and 4 (10.4; p<.001). Conclusions: Pelvic index is the ratio of the sacroacetabular distance to the height of the L5 vertebra. In conjunction with pelvic incidence, pelvic index can help to distinguish between Roussouly types 1 and 2 and between types 1 and 3 AP, the low-pelvic incidence types.

Background: Segmental medial meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) has been shown to restore knee biomechanics; however, stable fixation of the transplantation is critical to avoid extrusion and maximize healing. Purpose: To evaluate the degree of meniscal extrusion and biomechanical function of segmental medial MAT performed with meniscocapsular sutures versus repair augmentation with knotless suture anchors. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Segmental midbody medial meniscectomy and subsequent segmental medial MAT were performed on 10 fresh-frozen cadaveric knees. The knees were then loaded in a dynamic tensile testing machine to 1000 N for 60 seconds at 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° of flexion, and 4 conditions were tested: (1) intact, (2) segmental defect, (3) inside-out segmental repair, and (4) anchor plus inside-out segmental repair of the medial MAT. Meniscal extrusion was measured using high-fidelity ultrasound imaging. The mean contact area and the mean and peak contact pressures were assessed with submeniscal pressure-mapping sensors. Data from testing conditions were compared with 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance, with pairwise comparison using the Bonferroni method. Results: At 90° of flexion, the segmental defect state showed a higher degree of meniscal extrusion compared with all other states (P ≤ .012). There was no difference in the degree of meniscal extrusion between the intact state and the inside-out repair or anchor plus inside-out segmental repair states at all knee flexion angles (P > .05). There was no significant difference in the mean and peak contact pressures among the 4 states at all flexion angles except that at 0° of knee flexion there was significantly lower peak contact pressure at the medial compartment after anchor plus inside-out segmental repair compared with the segmental defect state (P = .048). Conclusion: Meniscal extrusion was not significantly increased at any flexion angle after segmental resection. The addition of knotless anchors did not improve meniscal extrusion or contact pressures/area compared with capsular repair alone. The addition of knotless anchors did improve contact mechanics from the segmental defect state, but only at 0° of flexion. Clinical Relevance: The addition of knotless suture anchors to segmental meniscal transplantation increased stabilization of the meniscus at full extension compared with repair with sutures alone. This increased stabilization may lead to better long-term outcomes.

A new genus of small phalangopsids (Orthoptera: Phalangopsidae) from the foothills of the Colombian Andes is described. Crinklyalis n. gen. is distinguished from the other genera of the subtribe Strogulomorphina (Paragryllini) by the modification in the mesal region of the tegmina, apparently an acoustic chamber; reduction of wing venation; male genitalia tubular, elongated and mostly membranous, with only the distal section sclerotized. Additionally, the key for the identification of the genera of the subtribe was updated, and the morphology of the new genus was discussed, as well as distributional gaps that currently exist for the Strogulomorphina taxa.

Astyloplatum luteolum n. gen. et n. sp., is described, as a new monospecific genus from the eastern slope of the Colombian Andes, of the middle and highlands of the departments of Boyacá and Santander. This new taxon is distinguished by its yellowish coloration and the lack of articulated stylli on the male subgenital plate; this character converges with several taxa unrelated to the tribe Gryllacridini in which Astyloplatum n. gen. is placed. The convergence of characters in gryllacridines, diversity, complement of the current classification, and the importance of the phallic complex for the delimitation of genera and species are discussed.

We contribute to our understanding of the social epidemiology of intimate partner violence (IPV) by developing a mediation model that frames IPV as an outcome of male sexual dysfunction (performance anxiety and erectile dysfunction) and the mechanisms of masculine discrepancy stress (the perceived failure to conform to internalized normative expectations of masculinity) and anger. Our mediation analyses of recently collected data from the 2021 Crime, Health, and Politics Survey (CHAPS), a national probability sample of 792 men, confirmed that sexual dysfunction was indirectly associated with the perpetration of any IPV, physical IPV, and sexual IPV through the compound path of masculine discrepancy stress and anger.

Previous research has established attitudinal and behavioral health variations in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, but scholarship on the religious antecedents associated with these outcomes has only recently gained momentum. Rhetoric from some leading conservative Protestants in the U.S. has underplayed the threat of the pandemic and may have contributed to unhealthy pandemic behaviors within this faith tradition. Moreover, previous inquiries have revealed that conservative Protestantism's otherworldly focus can thwart personal and community health. We use nationally representative data to test the hypotheses that, compared with other religious groups and the non-religious, conservative Protestants will tend to (1) perceive the pandemic as less threatening and (2) engage in riskier pandemic lifestyles. These hypotheses are generally supported net of confounding factors. We conclude that affiliation with a conservative Protestant denomination can undermine public health among this faith tradition's adherents and may therefore compromise general health and well-being during a pandemic. We discuss the implications of these findings, offer recommendations for pandemic health promotion among conservative Protestants, and delineate promising avenues for future research on this important topic.
