In this study, the cadmium (Cd)-tolerant Ensifer adhaerens strain NER9 with quorum sensing (QS) systems (responsible for N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) production) was characterized for QS system-mediated Cd immobilization and the underlying mechanisms involved. Whole-genome sequence analysis revealed that strain NER9 contains the QS SinI/R and TraI/R systems. Strains NER9 and the NER9∆sinI/R, NER9∆traI/R, and NER9∆sinI/R-traI/R mutants were constructed and compared for QS SinI/R and TraI/R system-mediated Cd immobilization in the solution and the mechanisms involved. After 24 h of incubation, strain NER9 significantly decreased the Cd concentration in the Cd-contaminated solution compared with the NER9∆sinI/R, NER9∆traI/R, and NER9∆sinI/R-traI/R mutants. The NER9∆sinI/R mutant had a greater impact on Cd immobilization and a lower impact on the activities of AHLs than did the NER9∆traI/R mutant. The NER9∆sinI/R mutant had significantly greater Cd concentrations and lower cell wall- and exopolysaccharide (EPS)-adsorbed Cd contents than did strain NER9. Furthermore, the NER9∆sinI/R mutant presented a decrease in the number of functional groups interacting with Cd, compared with strain NER9. These results suggested that the SinI/R system in strain NER9 contributed to Cd immobilization by mediating cell wall- and EPS-adsorption in Cd-containing solution.

BACKGROUND: Higher dietary cholesterol intake during pregnancy increases risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, no studies have investigated interindividual variability in cholesterol metabolism and the association of genetics and diet on GDM. OBJECTIVE: ; To prospectively evaluate the joint association of cholesterol-rich dietary patterns and polymorphisms of genes coding for cholesterol metabolism pathway proteins with GDM. METHODS: A total of 1116 pregnant females from the Tongji Birth Cohort were enrolled. GDM was diagnosed according to a 75-g 2-h oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28 wk of gestation. Dietary data were collected by a validated food frequency questionnaire. The reduced-rank regression method was used to identify dietary patterns using dietary cholesterol as the response variable. Time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used for genotyping. The genetic risk score (GRS) for GDM was constructed with genetic variants in 28 cholesterol metabolism-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Conditional logistic regression models were used to assess the odds ratio (OR) for GDM. RESULTS: The cholesterol-rich dietary pattern was rich in livestock and poultry meat and eggs but lower in cereals. The multivariable-adjusted ORs for GDM were 1.24 (95% confidence interval: 1.06-1.44) per SD increment of cholesterol-rich pattern scores and 1.28 (1.09-1.49) per tertile GRS. The variants of the CYP7A1 rs3808607 G→T/rs8192871 G→A/rs7833904 A→T, as well as AGGG and TTGA haplotypes of 4 CYP7A1-spanning SNPs, were significantly associated with GDM. For the joint effect, the OR was 3.53 (1.71-7.31) in the highest categories of both dietary pattern scores and GRS compared with individuals with the lowest strata without significant interaction (P for interaction = 0.101). CONCLUSIONS: Both a cholesterol-rich dietary pattern and genetic variants of cholesterol metabolism genes are associated with risk of GDM. Adherence to a cholesterol-rich dietary pattern during early pregnancy promotes the chance of GDM, especially in women with higher GRS. This study aims to determine the association of pregnancy cholesterol metabolism markers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk. We performed a nested case-control study in the Tongji Birth Cohort. GDM was diagnosed according to the 75 g 2 h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 24-28 gestational weeks. Nine cholesterol metabolism markers were detected using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Conditional logistic regression models were conducted. A total of 444 pregnant women were matched in a 1:2 ratio. The cholestanolTC and ß-sitosterolTC in cholesterol absorption markers presented negative associations with the risks of GDM (adjusted OR: 0.77, 95% CI: 0.61-0.96; adjusted OR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.64-1.00). The desmosterolTC in cholesterol synthesis markers were positively associated with the risks of GDM (adjusted OR: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.00-1.56), similar in the ratios of cholesterol synthesis to absorption markers. After adjustment for insulin or HOMA-IR, these effects were reduced. In conclusion, higher cholesterol synthesis and lower cholesterol absorption marker levels in the first pregnancy are associated with a higher risk of GDM, and insulin resistance may play a vital role in this association.

Phytoextraction with Sedum plumbizincicola is an in-situ, environmentally friendly and highly efficient remediation technique for slightly Cd-polluted soils but it remains a challenge to remediate highly Cd-polluted soils under field conditions. Here, an 8-ha field experiment was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of repeated phytoextraction by S. plumbizincicola of a highly Cd-polluted acid agricultural soil (pH 5.61, [Cd] 2.58 mg kg-1) in Yunnan province, southwest China. Mean shoot dry biomass production, Cd concentration and Cd uptake were 1.95 t ha-1, 170 mg kg-1 and 339 g ha-1 at the first harvest, and 0.91 t ha-1, 172 mg kg-1 and 142 g ha-1 at the second harvest. After two seasons of phytoextraction, soil total and CaCl2-extractable Cd concentrations decreased from 2.58 ± 0.69 to 1.53 ± 0.43 mg kg-1 and 0.22 ± 0.12 to 0.14 ± 0.07 mg kg-1, respectively. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis shows that the shoot Cd concentration and uptake of S. plumbizincicola were positively related to soil CaCl2-extractable Cd concentrations, especially in the first crop. A negative relationship indicates that soil organic matter content played an important role in soil Cd availability and shoot Cd concentration in the first crop. In addition, the rhizosphere effect on soil CaCl2-extractable Cd concentration was negatively correlated with soil pH in the first crop. The accuracy of the calculation of soil Cd phytoextraction efficiency at field scale depends on all of the following factors being considered: shoot Cd uptake, cropping pattern, standardized sampling points, and the leaching and surface runoff of Cd. Phytoextraction with S. plumbizincicola is a feasible technique for efficient Cd removal from highly polluted soils and wide variation in soil properties can influence phytoextraction efficiency at the field scale.

SCOPE: Magnesium plays an important role in regulating glucose metabolism. The study attempts to explore association between magnesium status and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of gene involved in magnesium absorption-transient receptor potential membrane melastatin 6 (TRPM6) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk METHODS AND RESULTS: A nested case-control study including 170 GDM cases and matched 340 controls is conducted based on Tongji Birth Cohort. Dietary, serum, and urine magnesium are evaluated before the diagnosis of GDM. Compared to the lowest tertile, women in the highest tertile of serum magnesium are at a lower risk of GDM (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.42, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.21-0.84). Serum magnesium is inversely associated with insulin and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (ß = -0.05, p = 0.002; ß = -0.04, p = 0.001, respectively). The aOR for GDM in carriers of the CT or CC genotypes of TRPM6 rs2274924 compared with carriers of the TT genotype is 2.76 (95% CI 1.78-4.26). Dietary magnesium is positively associated with serum magnesium (ß = 0.02, p = 0.004), but not with GDM risk. CONCLUSION: Serum magnesium and the TRPM6 rs2274924 polymorphism are associated with the risk of GDM.

Keyphrase generation is one of the most fundamental tasks in natural language processing (NLP). Most existing works on keyphrase generation mainly focus on using holistic distribution to optimize the negative log-likelihood loss, but they do not directly manipulate the copy and generating spaces, which may reduce the generability of the decoder. Additionally, existing keyphrase models are either unable to determine the dynamic numbers of keyphrases or produce the number of keyphrases implicitly. In this article, we propose a probabilistic keyphrase generation model from copy and generating spaces. The proposed model is built upon the vanilla variational encoder-decoder (VED) framework. On top of VED, two separate latent variables are adopted to model the distribution of data within the latent copy and generating spaces, respectively. Specifically, we adopt a von Mises-Fisher (vMF) distribution to obtain a condensed variable for modifying the generating probability distribution over the predefined vocabulary. Meanwhile, we utilize a clustering module, which is designed to promote Gaussian Mixture learning and subsequently extract a latent variable for the copy probability distribution. Moreover, we utilize a natural property of the Gaussian mixture network and use the number of filtered components to determine the number of keyphrases. The approach is trained based on latent variable probabilistic modeling, neural variational inference, and self-supervised learning. Experiments on social media and scientific article datasets outperform the state-of-the-art baselines in generating accurate predictions and controllable keyphrase numbers.

We used two a priori diet scores [Mediterranean diet (aMed) and Diet Balance Index (DBI)] and two a posteriori approaches [principal components analysis (PCA) and reduced-rank regression (RRR)] to examine the association of maternal dietary patterns with risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and blood glucose among 2202 pregnant women in the Tongji Birth Cohort. Compared to the highest quartile of the aMed and legumes-vegetables-fruits (derived by PCA) scores, the fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were higher in the lower quartiles (p-trend < 0.05). Lower scores of the meats-eggs-dairy (derived by PCA) and eggs-fish patterns (derived by RRR; characterised by higher intakes of freshwater fish, eggs, and lower intakes of leafy and cruciferous vegetables and fruits) were associated with decreased FBG levels (p-trend < 0.05). Similarities were found across approaches that some dietary patterns were associated with FBG, but not with postprandial glucose and GDM risk.

Metal-immobilizing bacteria play a critical role in metal accumulation in vegetables. However, little is known concerning the mechanisms involved in bacteria-induced reduced metal availability and uptake in vegetables. In this study, the impacts of metal-immobilizing Pseudomonas taiwanensis WRS8 on the plant biomass, Cd and Pb availability and uptake in two coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) cultivars, and bacterial community structure were investigated in the polluted soil. Strain WRS8 increased the biomass of two coriander cultivars by 25-48% and reduced Cd and Pb contents in the edible tissues by 40-59% and available Cd and Pb contents in the rhizosphere soils by 11.1-15.2%, compared with the controls. Strain WRS8 significantly increased the pH values and relative abundances of the dominant populations of Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Gaiellales, Streptomyces, Frankiales, Bradyrhizobium, and Luteimonas, while strain WRS8 significantly decreased the relative abundances of the dominant populations of Gemmatimonadaceae, Nitrospira, Haliangium, Paenibacillus, Massilia, Bryobacter, and Rokubacteriales and the rare bacterial populations of Enterorhabdus, Roseburia, Luteibacter, and Planifilum in the rhizosphere soils, compared with the controls. Significantly negative correlations were observed between the available metal concentrations and the abundances of Pseudomonas, Luteimonas, Frankiales, and Planifilum. These results implied that strain WRS8 could affect the abundances of the dominant and rare bacterial populations involved in metal immobilization, resulting in increased pH values and decreased metal availability and uptake in the vegetables in the contaminated soil.

BACKGROUND: Thiamine and riboflavin deficiencies exist to varying degrees worldwide, especially in developing countries. Evidence regarding the association between thiamine and riboflavin intake and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is scarce. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the association of thiamine and riboflavin intake during pregnancy, including dietary source and supplementation, with GDM risk in a prospective cohort study. METHODS: We included 3036 pregnant women (923 in the first trimester and 2113 in the second trimester) from the Tongji Birth Cohort. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and a lifestyle questionnaire were used to assess thiamine and riboflavin intake from dietary source and supplementation, respectively. GDM was diagnosed using the 75 g 2-h oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28 weeks of gestation. A modified Poisson regression or logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between thiamine and riboflavin intake and GDM risk. RESULTS: Dietary intake of thiamine and riboflavin was at low levels during pregnancy. In the fully adjusted model, compared with participants in quartile 1 (Q1), those who had more total thiamine and riboflavin intake had a lower risk of GDM during the first trimester [thiamine: Q2: RR: 0.58 (95% CI: 0.34, 0.98); Q3: RR: 0.45 (95% CI: 0.24, 0.84); Q4: RR: 0.35 (95% CI: 0.17, 0.72), P for trend = 0.002; riboflavin: Q2: RR: 0.63 (95% CI: 0.37, 1.09); Q3: RR: 0.45 (95% CI: 0.24, 0.87); Q4: RR: 0.39 (95% CI: 0.19, 0.79), P for trend = 0.006]. This association was also observed during the second trimester. Similar results were observed for the association between thiamine and riboflavin supplement use but not dietary intake and GDM risk. CONCLUSIONS: Higher intake of thiamine and riboflavin during pregnancy is associated with a lower incidence of GDM. This trial was registered at http://www.chictr.org.cn as ChiCTR1800016908.

Molecular dynamics simulation is used to study the transport characteristics of NaCl solution in boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). It presents an interesting and well-supported MD study of the crystallization of NaCl from its water solution under the confinement of a 3 nm thick boron nitride nanotube with varied surface charging conditions. The results of the molecular dynamics simulation indicate that NaCl crystallization occurs in charged BNNTs at room temperature when the concentration of NaCl solution reaches about 1.2 M. The reason for this phenomenon is as follows: when the number of ions in the nanotubes is high, the double electric layer that forms at the nanoscale near the charged wall surface, the hydrophobicity of BNNTs, and the interaction among ions cause ions to aggregate in the nanotubes. As the concentration of NaCl solution increases, the concentration of ions when they aggregate in the nanotubes reaches the saturation concentration of the NaCl solution, resulting in the crystalline precipitation phenomenon.

Background: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6) is an important fatty acid in breast milk and is essential for infantile growth and cognitive development. However, the factors that affect the DHA concentration in breast milk have not been completely clarified. Objective: This study aimed to characterize the composition of breast milk fatty acids and to identify maternal factors associated with breast milk DHA concentration in postpartum women in Wuhan, China. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed milk fatty acids in 115 lactating women at 30-120 days postpartum using GC-MS. Maternal sociodemographic, health and other information were collected using a self-reported questionnaire. Maternal dietary intake information was collected through a 24-hour dietary recall method. Postpartum depression status was identified using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Results: The mean DHA proportion in breast milk was 0.49%. The multivariate regression model showed that the milk DHA proportion was positively associated with maternal aquatic product intake (ß = 0.183, 95%CI: 0.052, 0.314) and DHA supplement use (ß = 0.146, 95%CI: 0.108, 0.185), and negatively associated with postpartum depression status (ß = -0.122, 95%CI: -0.243, -0.002) after adjustment for several maternal and infant factors. Conclusion: Increasing maternal aquatic product intake and DHA supplement use and improving postpartum depression status may increase DHA concentration in breast milk in lactating women.

The offspring of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) mothers are considered to be at the risk of cardiovascular diseases due to intrauterine hyperglycemia exposure. Our previous study showed that zinc, selenium, and chromium dramatically alleviated glucose intolerance in GDM rats and their offspring (P < 0.05). However, the effects of these elements on the damage of the cardiac myocytes of GDM offspring and the underlying mechanisms have not been demonstrated. Here, we investigated the beneficial effects of zinc (10 mg per kg bw), selenium (20 µg per kg bw), and chromium (20 µg per kg bw) supplementation on myocardial fibrosis in the offspring of GDM rats induced by a high-fat and sucrose (HFS) diet. The results showed that maternal GDM induced glucose intolerance, oxidative stress, cardiac inflammation and myocardial fibrosis in offspring rats during different ages (3 days, 3 weeks, and adulthood), which were ameliorated by zinc, selenium and chromium supplementation (P < 0.05). The activity of cardiac damage markers such as creatine kinase-myocardial band isoenzyme (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) decreased by 40-60% in element-supplemented offspring compared to that in non-supplemented offspring of GDM dams (P < 0.05). Moreover, maternal GDM-induced expression of fibrosis-related proteins and the transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-ß1)/small mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 3 (Smad3) signaling pathway in the heart tissue of offspring was down-regulated by zinc, selenium, and chromium supplementation (P < 0.05). In conclusion, zinc, selenium, and chromium may play a protective role in maternal GDM-induced myocardial fibrosis in offspring from birth to adulthood by inactivating the TGF-ß1/Smad3 pathway.

This study investigated the influence of chitosan oligosaccharides (COSs) on a thioacetamide-induced hepatic encephalopathy (HE) Wistar rat model. COS treatment statistically reduced the false neurotransmitters and blood ammonia in HE rats, along with the suppression of oxidative stress and inflammation. The disbalanced gut microbiota was detected in HE rats by 16S rDNA sequencing, but the abundance alterations of some intestinal bacteria at either the phylum or genus level were at least partly restored by COS treatment. According to metabolomics analysis of rat feces, six metabolism pathways with the greatest response to HE were screened, several of which were remarkably reversed by COS. The altered metabolites might serve as a bridge for the alleviated HE rats treated with COS and the enhanced intestinal bacterial structure. This study provides novel guidance to develop novel food or dietary supplements to improve HE diseases due to the potential beneficial effect of COS on gut-liver axis.

Adrenomedullin (ADM) is thought to play a significant role in regulating insulin secretion and glucose metabolism. However, studies on the relationship between ADM and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are limited. We hypothesized that a higher serum ADM concentration would be associated with an increased risk of GDM. Therefore, a nested case-control study of 65 GDM cases and 130 prepregnancy body mass index, age, parity, and gestational age of blood collection-matched controls was conducted to prospectively evaluate the association between circulating ADM concentrations in early pregnancy and the risk of GDM in pregnant women based on the Tongji Birth Cohort. Serum ADM concentrations in the GDM group were higher than those in the control group (2125.04 ± 644.97 vs 1880.76 ± 581.13 pg/mL) (P = .008). Serum ADM concentration was positively associated with the risk of developing GDM (Ptrend < .05). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) comparing the highest tertile of ADM with the lowest was 2.74 (95% CI, 1.17-6.43). The risk of GDM increased by 49% (OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.05-2.12) for each SD increment of serum ADM. Moreover, serum ADM concentration was positively correlated with circulating total cholesterol (r = 0.204), triglycerides (r = 0.197), and systolic blood pressure (r = 0.173), but negatively correlated with circulating high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration (r = -0.176). Pregnant women with higher serum ADM concentrations have a markedly increased risk of developing GDM. Further studies are warranted to explore the possible thresholds of ADM that increase the risk of GDM and to confirm and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the offspring's risk of developing glucose intolerance. Our previous study reported that co-supplementation with zinc, selenium, and chromium improved insulin resistance in diet-induced GDM rats. Here, Transgenerational effects of supplementation with zinc (10 mg/kg.bw), selenium (20 µg/kg.bw), and chromium (20 µg/kg.bw) in F1 female offspring of both zinc, selenium and chromium (ZnSeCr)-treated, and untreated GDM rats daily by gavage from weaning to the postpartum were investigated in the present study. Glucose homeostasis in the F1 female offspring of GDM at different stages were evaluated. Maternal GDM did increase the birth mass of newborn F1 female offspring, as well as the serum glucose and insulin levels. Zinc, selenium and chromium supplementation attenuated the GDM-induced mass gain, increased serum glucose and insulin levels in the female neonates. The high fat and sucrose (HFS) diet-fed GDM-F1 offspring developed GDM, with glucose intolerance, hyperglycemia and insulin resistance during pregnancy. Moreover, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related protein levels were increased and the activation of insulin signaling pathways were reduced in the liver of HFS-fed GDM-F1 offspring. Whereas glucose homeostasis in parallel with insulin sensitivity was normalized in the female offspring of GDM by supplementation both F0 dams and F1 offspring with zinc, selenium and chromium, not in those either F0 or F1 elements supplemented offspring. Therefore, we speculate that zinc, selenium and chromium supplementation may have a potential beneficial transgenerational effect on the glucose homeostasis in the female offspring of GDM.

This study aimed to examine whether nuclear receptor 4a1 (NR4A1) is involved in inhibiting hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and liver fibrosis through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). HSC-T6 cells were divided into the control group, the acetaldehyde (200 µM, an EMT activator) group, and the NR4A1 activation group (Cytosporone B; 1 µM). The expression levels of the epithelial marker E-cadherin, the mesenchymal markers fibronectin (FN), vimentin, smooth muscle alpha-actin (α-SMA), and fibroblast-specific protein 1 (FSP-1), and the components of the transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß pathway were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. Compared with the control group, E-cadherin in the acetaldehyde group was downregulated, whereas FN, FSP-1, vimentin, α-SMA, and COL1A1/COL1A2 were upregulated (P < 0.05). Compared with the acetaldehyde group, NR4A1 agonist upregulated E-cadherin and downregulated FN, FSP-1, vimentin, α-SMA, and COL1A1/COL1A2 (P < 0.05). After acetaldehyde stimulation, TGF-ß, Smad2/3/4, and zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox (ZEB) were upregulated, while Smad7 mRNA levels were downregulated (all P < 0.05). Compared with acetaldehyde alone, NR4A1 agonist increased Smad7 mRNA levels and reduced TGF-ß, Smad2/3/4, and ZEB mRNA levels (all P < 0.05). NR4A1 activation suppresses acetaldehyde-induced EMT, as shown by epithelial and mesenchymal marker expression. The inhibition of the TGF-ß-Smad2/3/4-ZEB signaling during HSC activation might be involved.

The Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI) was built on Dietary Guidelines for Chinese-2016 and has been confirmed as a valid measuring instrument to evaluate the diet quality of the Chinese population. Studies have shown that healthy dietary patterns were associated with reduced metabolic syndrome (MS) risk. Here, we hypothesized a better adherence to CHEI was effective in preventing MS. Therefore, we performed a cross-sectional study (n = 704; 298 males and 406 females) in Hubei. Dietary data were collected by 3-day 24-hour dietary recalls. MS was diagnosed using Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of type 2 Diabetes in China (2017 edition). Logistic regression and propensity and restricted cubic splines analysis were used to evaluate the associations of CHEI with MS and its components. In a comparison of the adjusted risk of MS in participants in the third and first tertile of CHEI, a 47% lower risk was observed for MS in females, especially for those who were middle-aged. However, no significant association of CHEI was exhibited with MS in males. Propensity analysis validated the findings in females, presenting a 58% lower MS risk and 71% lower risk of central obesity. It exhibited a linear association of CHEI score with MS and abdominal obesity. The associations were consistent after excluding those with prior hypertension or diabetes mellitus. In conclusion, a negative linear association was identified between CHEI score and MS and central obesity, which was pronounced in females.

Biofilm-producing bacteria can decrease Cd uptake in vegetables, but mechanisms underlying this effect are poorly characterized. In this study, two mutant strains B12ΔYwcc and B12ΔSlrR were constructed from a biofilm-producing Bacillus subtilis strain B12. Then, the impacts of strain B12 and its high biofilm-producing mutant strain B12ΔYwcc and low biofilm-producing mutant strain B12ΔSlrR on Cd availability and uptake in Chinese cabbage and the related mechanisms were investigated in the Cd-polluted soil. Strain B12 and its mutants B12ΔYwcc and B12ΔSlrR increased the dry biomasses of edible tissues by 54%-130% compared with the controls. Strain B12 and its mutant B12ΔYwcc reduced the soil available Cd content by 36%-50% and root and edible tissue Cd contents by 23%-50% compared with the controls. Furthermore, the mutant strain B12ΔYwcc reduced the edible tissue Cd content by 40% and increased the polysaccharide content by 23%, invertase activity by 139%, and gene copies of the cumA by 4.5-fold, epsA by 7.1-fold, and cadA by 4.3-fold, which were involved in Cd adsorption in the rhizosphere soils, respectively, compared with strain B12. The polysaccharide content and cumA, epsA, and cadA gene copy numbers showed significantly reverse correlations with the available Cd content. Notably, the mutant strain B12ΔYwcc showed better ability to colonize the vegetable root surface than strain B12. These findings demonstrated that the biofilm-overproducing mutant strain B12ΔYwcc increased the polysaccharide production and Cd-immobilizing related cumA, epsA, and cadA gene copies, resulting in lower Cd availability and accumulation in Chinese cabbage in the Cd-polluted soil.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), also known as membrane vesicles, are vesicular bodies secreted by eukaryotic cells and bacteria. EVs can carry proteins, DNA, RNA, and various metabolites for the exchange and transmission of substances between cells. They play contents-dependent physiological functions, such as delivering nutrients, participating in immune response, and treating cancers. Currently, most studies focus on the exploration of vesicles secreted by eukaryotic cells and gram-negative bacteria, while few studies focus on gram-positive bacteria. This review summarized the production, content composition, physiological function, and engineering of EVs secreted by gram-positive bacteria, and prospected future perspectives in this area.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the potential role of maternal serum levels of neutrophils in the first trimester of pregnancy in the prediction of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled singleton pregnant women before gestational weeks 16 and evaluated them until delivery. Among the 1467 pregnant women who performed prenatal care before 14 weeks of gestation in the cohort, a total of 731 were eligible for the final analysis. The associations between neutrophil counts, white blood cell count, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, and GDM (assessed by a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test between 24 and 28 weeks) were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Neutrophil count outperformed the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and white blood cell count in predicting GDM occurrence. We applied a smoothing function and found that neutrophil count was associated with both fasting blood glucose (FBG) (p=.0149) and 1-h postprandial blood glucose (PBG) (p=.0187) after adjustment pre-pregnancy body mass index, family history of diabetes, and age. Logistic regression analysis found that the highest neutrophil count level (6.28-14.73 × 109/L) had a 1.85-fold (95% CI 1.10, 3.09) increased risk of GDM compared with that of the lowest tertile (1.47-4.82 × 109/L). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated an association between higher neutrophil levels and GDM occurrence.
