RESUMEN

A total of 3,860 accessions from the global in trust clonal potato germplasm collection w3ere genotyped with the Illumina Infinium SolCAP V2 12K potato SNP array to evaluate genetic diversity and population structure within the potato germplasm collection. Diploid, triploid, tetraploid, and pentaploid accessions were included representing the cultivated potato taxa. Heterozygosity ranged from 9.7% to 66.6% increasing with ploidy level with an average heterozygosity of 33.5%. Identity, relatedness, and ancestry were evaluated using hierarchal clustering and model-based Bayesian admixture analyses. Errors in genetic identity were revealed in a side-by-side comparison of in vitro clonal material with the original mother plants revealing mistakes putatively occurring during decades of processing and handling. A phylogeny was constructed to evaluate inter- and intraspecific relationships which together with a STRUCTURE analysis supported both commonly used treatments of potato taxonomy. Accessions generally clustered based on taxonomic and ploidy classifications with some exceptions but did not consistently cluster by geographic origin. STRUCTURE analysis identified putative hybrids and suggested six genetic clusters in the cultivated potato collection with extensive gene flow occurring among the potato populations, implying most populations readily shared alleles and that introgression is common in potato. Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigena (ADG) and S. curtilobum (CUR) displayed significant admixture. ADG likely has extensive admixture due to its broad geographic distribution. Solanum phureja (PHU), Solanum chaucha (CHA)/Solanum stenotomum subsp. stenotomum (STN), and Solanum tuberosum subsp. tuberosum (TBR) populations had less admixture from an accession/population perspective relative to the species evaluated. A core and mini core subset from the genebank material was also constructed. SNP genotyping was also carried out on 745 accessions from the Seed Savers potato collection which confirmed no genetic duplication between the two potato collections, suggesting that the collections hold very different genetic resources of potato. The Infinium SNP Potato Array is a powerful tool that can provide diversity assessments, fingerprint genebank accessions for quality management programs, use in research and breeding, and provide insights into the complex genetic structure and hybrid origin of the diversity present in potato genetic resource collections.

This breeding project, initiated at the United States Potato Genebank (USPG) in collaboration with Peruvian partners Instituto Nacional de Innovacion Agraria (INIA), International Potato Center, Peru (CIP), and local farmers, sought to enhance cold hardiness and frost tolerance in native potato cultivars in Peru. The Andes and Altiplano are often affected by frost, which causes significant reduction in yield; creating varieties with superior resilience is a critical undertaking. The goal was to transfer outstanding non-acclimated cold tolerance and acclimation capacity found in wild potato species Solanum commersonii (cmm). Breeding families segregating for cold hardiness were created using (a) a somatic hybrid cmm + haploid Solanum tuberosum (tbr) (cv. Superior, US variety from Wisconsin) as male and (b) seven cultivars native to Peru of the species S. tuberosum sbsp. andigenum (adg) as females. All plant materials were part of the USPG germplasm collection. Sexual seeds of each family were sent to Peru for evaluations under the natural conditions of the Andean highlands and Altiplano. The plants were assessed for their response to frost, and genotypes showing exceptional tolerance were selected. Plants were also evaluated for good tuber traits and yield. Initial planting involving ~2,500 seedlings in five locations resulted in selecting 58 genotypes with exceptional frost tolerance, good recovery capacity after frost, and good tuber traits. Over the years, evaluations continued and were expanded to replicated field trials in the harsher conditions of the Altiplano (Puno). All trials confirmed consistency of frost tolerance over time and location, tuber quality, and yield. After 8 years, two advanced clones were considered for cultivar release because of their exceptional frost tolerance and superior field productivity that outyielded many of the established cultivars in the region. In November 2018, a new native cultivar named Wiñay, a Quechua word meaning "to grow" was released in Peru. In 2022, a second cultivar followed with the name Llapanchispaq (meaning "for all of us"). This project evidenced that a multinational and all-encompassing approach to deploy valuable genetic diversity can work and deliver effective results. This is even more significant when outcomes can promote food security and sustainability in very vulnerable regions of the world.

One crucial property of concrete, particularly in construction, is its thermal conductivity, which impacts heat transfer through conduction. For example, reducing the thermal conductivity of concrete can lead to energy savings in buildings. Various techniques exist for measuring the thermal conductivity of materials, but there is limited discussion in the literature about suitable methods for concrete. In this study, the transient line source method is employed to evaluate the thermal conductivity of concrete samples with natural and synthetic fibers after 7 and 28 days of curing. The results indicate that concrete with hemp fiber generally exhibits higher thermal conductivity values, increasing by 48% after 28 days of curing, while synthetic fibers have a minimal effect. In conclusion, this research opens the door to using natural alternatives like hemp fiber to improve concrete's thermal properties, providing alternatives for thermo-active foundations and geothermal energy piles which require high thermal conductivities.

Background: Fexofenadine emerged as one of the most representative second generation histamine H1 antagonist drugs since the 1990s, with an outstanding efficacy and appreciable safety for the treatment of allergic patients. While allergic rhino-conjunctivitis represents the most frequent atopic disease globally, an update of fexofenadine efficacy and safety on this entity was proposed as a surrogate of allergic condition. Methods: Double blind, placebo controlled, randomized clinical trials investigating the efficacy and safety of fexofenadine for the treatment of Allergic Rhinitis were searched in 5 major global databases. Eligibility criteria and characteristics, risk of bias, and validity assessment, data extraction and heterogeneity evaluation are described. Primary outcome selected corresponded to 12-reflective and instantaneous total symptom scores (TSS), besides morning instantaneous TSS and the frequency of reported adverse events (AEs); analysis was planned on the intention-to-treat population.Standardized mean differences of scoring systems were analyzed, and Cochran's Q statistic test and the I2 test were assessed for heterogeneity. Results: From the initial 83 identified records, 12 eligible studies were selected. In the evaluated patients, individuals receiving fexofenadine (1910) showed a significant reduction of TSS compared with those who received placebo (1777), change from baseline: standardized mean difference (SMD) -0.33; 95% CI-0.47 to -0.18, p < 0.0001. Morning instantaneous TSS also demonstrated lower symptoms (change from baseline: SMS -1.42; 95% CI -2.22 to -0.62, p = 0.0005). Heterogeneity was found across selected studies.Frequency of AEs was similar compared to placebo (OR = 1.04; 0.88-1.21), with no detection of heterogeneity across these 12 studies. Conclusions: According to this new evidence, fexofenadine maintains its beneficial profile on signs and symptoms of patients with allergic conditions, as well as its attributes as one of the major candidates for an ideal antihistamine medication (including special conditions such as pregnancy and pre-school age), providing support to its over-the-counter condition in several countries.

Introducción: En Panamá y el mundo, desde hace varios años, los arrecifes se han visto amenazados por acciones como el desarrollo costero, sedimentación, contaminación por entidades terrestres, que son las más frecuentes, dando lugar a la implementación de metodologías de restauración. Objetivo: Comparar la eficiencia de dos estructuras de jardines coralinos en el crecimiento de la especie Acropora cervicornis en Bahía Huertas, Parque Nacional Portobelo, Colón Panamá. Métodos: Se colocaron dos estructuras de tipo fijo, utilizando PVC junto con bases de concreto hidráulico, y dos estructuras tipo tendedero, utilizando PVC e hilo de nylon. Los fragmentos de coral que se colocaron en las estructuras provenían de Bahía Huertas e Isla Buenaventura. El crecimiento de los corales se determinó mediante el método de medición de crecimiento lineal y extensión tisular. Resultados: Se plantaron un total de 80 fragmentos de coral, lo que representa una extensión estimada de 9.71 m de coral en Bahía Huertas. Tras nueve meses de estudio, se estimó un total de 15.3 m de coral totalmente nuevo (1 525.6 cm), donde sólo el 4.6 % pertenecía a los fragmentos de la estructura de tipo fijo, mientras que el 95.4 % pertenecía a la estructura de tipo tendedero. Conclusiones: La estructura tipo tendedero fue la más eficiente y viable dentro del estudio, con mejor tasa de supervivencia y crecimiento en comparación con la estructura tipo fija, donde sí presentó una mortalidad del 45 %.


Introduction: In Panama and the world, for several years, reefs have been threatened by actions such as coastal development, sedimentation, and contamination by terrestrial entities, which are the most frequent, giving rise to the implementation of restoration methodologies. Objective: To compare the efficiency of two coral garden structures in the growth of the species Acropora cervicornis in Huertas Bay, Portobelo National Park, Colon Panama. Methods: Two fixed-type structures were placed, using PVC together with hydraulic concrete bases, and two clothesline-type structures, using PVC and nylon thread. The coral fragments that were placed in the structures came from Bahía Huertas and Buenaventura Island. The growth of the corals was determined using the linear growth and tissue extension measurement method. Results: A total of 80 coral fragments were planted, representing an estimated extension of 9.71 m of coral in Huertas Bay. After nine months of study, a total of 15.3 m of totally new coral (1 525.6 cm) was estimated, where only 4.6 % belonged to the fragments of the fixe-type structure, while 95.4 % belonged to the clothesline-type structure. Conclusions: The clothesline-type structure was the most efficient and viable within the study, with better survival and growth rate compared to the fixed type structure, where it did present a mortality of 45 %.

Crop wild relatives (CWRs) are important sources of novel genes, due to their high variability of response to biotic and abiotic stresses, which can be invaluable for crop genetic improvement programs. Recent studies have shown that CWRs are threatened by several factors, including changes in land-use and climate change. A large proportion of CWRs are underrepresented in genebanks, making it necessary to take action to ensure their long-term ex situ conservation. With this aim, 18 targeted collecting trips were conducted during 2017/2018 in the center of origin of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), targeting 17 diverse ecological regions of Peru. This was the first comprehensive wild potato collection in Peru in at least 20 years and encompassed most of the unique habitats of potato CWRs in the country. A total of 322 wild potato accessions were collected as seed, tubers, and whole plants for ex situ storage and conservation. They belonged to 36 wild potato species including one accession of S. ayacuchense that was not conserved previously in any genebank. Most accessions required regeneration in the greenhouse prior to long-term conservation as seed. The collected accessions help reduce genetic gaps in ex situ conserved germplasm and will allow further research questions on potato genetic improvement and conservation strategies to be addressed. These potato CWRs are available by request for research, training, and breeding purposes under the terms of the International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) from the Instituto Nacional de Innovacion Agraria (INIA) and the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima-Peru.

A alergia ocular, também conhecida como conjuntivite alérgica (CA), é uma reação de hipersensibilidade mediada por imunoglobulina E (IgE) do olho desencadeada por aeroalérgenos, principalmente ácaros da poeira doméstica e pólen de gramíneas. Os sintomas geralmente consistem em prurido ocular ou periocular, lacrimejamento e olhos vermelhos que podem estar presentes durante todo o ano ou sazonalmente. A alergia ocular tem frequência elevada, é subdiagnosticada e pode ser debilitante para o paciente. É potencialmente danosa para a visão, nos casos em que ocasiona cicatrização corneana grave, e na maioria dos pacientes associa-se a outros quadros alérgicos, principalmente rinite, asma e dermatite atópica. É classificada em conjuntivite alérgica perene, conjuntivite alérgica sazonal, ceratoconjuntivite atópica e ceratoconjuntivite vernal. O diagnóstico procura evidenciar o agente etiológico e a confirmação se dá pela realização do teste de provocação conjuntival. O tratamento baseia-se em evitar o contato com os desencadeantes, lubrificação, anti-histamínicos tópicos, estabilizadores de mastócitos, imunossupressores e imunoterapia específica com o objetivo de obter o controle e prevenir as complicações da doença.


Ocular allergy, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, is an immunoglobulin E-mediated hypersensitivity reaction of the eye triggered by airborne allergens, primarily house dust mites and grass pollen. Symptoms usually consist of ocular or periocular itching, watery eyes, and red eyes that may be present year-round or seasonally. Ocular allergy has a high frequency, is underdiagnosed, and can be debilitating for the patient. It is potentially harmful to vision in cases of severe corneal scarring, and in most patients, it is associated with other allergic conditions, especially rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. It is classified as perennial allergic conjunctivitis, seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Diagnosis seeks to identify the etiologic agent, and confirmation is given by conjunctival provocation testing. Treatment is based on avoiding contact with triggers, lubrication, topical antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, immunosuppressants, and specific immunotherapy with the aim of achieving control and preventing disease complications.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic urticaria (CU). Our study aims to fill this gap by determining the frequency of the risk categories for OSA and how they might correlate with the specific CU patient reported outcome measures urticaria activity score (UAS7), urticaria control test (UCT) and CU quality of life questionnaire (CU-Q2oL). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving a cohort of 171 Latin American CU patients. Descriptive statistics were used to determine frequency and proportions for demographic and clinical variables, while a chi-squared test for association between STOP-Bang OSA questionnaire categories and both UAS7 and UCT categories was performed to analyze how such variables interact. To further assess the strength of the correlation a Cramer's V coefficient was reported. Finally, a Kendall-Tau b correlation coefficient was performed to measure the correlation between the STOP-Bang score and other independent continuous variables. RESULTS: The average STOP-Bang score was 2.5, with 24% and 21% of patients falling into the intermediate and high-risk category for moderate-to-severe OSA, respectively. There was a strong statistically significant association (Cramer's V = 0.263; p = .000) between UAS-7 categories and STOP-Bang risk categories. A similar pattern of strong significant association (Cramer's V = .269; p = .002) was observed between UCT categories and STOP-Bang risk categories. A weak positive correlation between the STOP-Bang score and the CU-Q2oL average score (τb = 0.188, p = .001) was identified. Overall, 72.5% patients reported limitations with respect to sleep in a varied degree according to the CU-Q2oL. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that a considerable proportion of patients with CU are at intermediate to high risk for OSA. Higher disease activity, poor CU control, and worse quality of life were all found to be associated with an increased risk. Additional studies are needed to determine the exact link between these conditions, and to determine whether screening and treatment for OSA might benefit patients with CU.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoke has been described as causing increased prevalence of rhinitis symptoms and decreased atopy. Furthermore, these nasal symptoms and quality of life in smokers with Allergic Rhinitis (AR) were not significantly different to non-smokers. As a result of this duality, a comparison study between the quality of life and inflammatory markers of atopy among active smokers and non-smokers having AR was put forward. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study in adult smokers and non-smokers, with a clinical diagnosis of AR and positive Skin Prick Test (SPT). Smoking status was confirmed by salivary cotinine measurements. Functional respiratory evaluation was performed, and quality of life between groups was compared using Mini-RQLQ questionnaire. Immunological markers in serum and nasal washes (IgE, IL-4, IL 5, IL 13, IL 17, IL 33) were evaluated, while samples from a third group of passive smokers was incorporated for serological comparison exclusively. The statistical analysis included Student T test, x2, Mann Whitney U (Anova 2-way), and Kruskal Wallis for 3 groups analysis. Values of P < 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: Twenty-two patients per group with similar demographics and allergen sensitivity were studied. Regarding inflammatory markers, a reduction of IL 33 in the serum of smokers (P < 0.001) was the only statistically significant different parameter revealed, showing a remarkable trend in nasal lavage. Salivary cotinine levels were absolutely different (P < 0.0001), but pulmonary function evaluations were not statistically significant after multiple adjusting. There were no significant differences in quality of life parameters. CONCLUSIONS: In our study of AR, active smokers do not demonstrate impaired nasal related quality of life or impact on atopic inflammatory parameters, compared to non-smokers. Reduced levels of IL33 could explain a lack of symptoms alerting smokers of the harmful consequences of smoking.

Crop efficiencies associated with intercepted radiation, conversion into biomass and allocation to edible organs are essential for yield improvement strategies that would enhance genetic properties to maximize carbon gain without increasing crop inputs. The production of 20 potato landraces-never studied before-was analyzed for radiation interception ( ε i ), conversion ( ε c ) and partitioning ( ε p ) efficiencies. Additionally, other physiological traits related to senescence delay (normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) s l p ), tuberization precocity ( t u ), photosynthetic performance and dry tuber yield per plant (TY) were also assessed. Vegetation reflectance was remotely acquired and the efficiencies estimated through a process-based model parameterized by a time-series of airborne imageries. The combination of ε i and ε c , closely associated with an early tuber maturity and a NDVI s l p explained 39% of the variability grouping the most productive genotypes. TY was closely correlated to senescence delay (r P e a r s o n = 0.74), indicating the usefulness of remote sensing methods for potato yield diversity characterization. About 89% of TY was explained by the first three principal components, associated mainly to t u , ε c and ε i , respectively. When comparing potato with other major crops, its ε p is very close to the theoretical maximum. These findings suggest that there is room for improving ε i and ε c to enhance potato production.

Chronic urticaria (CU) has a widespread spectrum on causal or exacerbating factors, clinical manifestations, therapeutic response and quality of life affectation. Registries are useful tools in several real-life diagnosis and management approach.We aimed to evaluate the characteristics of CU patients living in Latin America through an original cross-sectional registry with data entered by regional allergologists. RESULTS: Three hundred patients were included, being 72% female, with median age of 36 years (1-85) and 20 months of CU median evolution time. The cause of CU was reported as unknown in 72% of them.Thirty-nine percent of suspected cases presented positive serology for Mycoplasma, positive autologous serum skin test (ASST) was reported in 47%, and occasional presence of thyroid or antinuclear autoantibodies and parasites. The impact of pruritus in their quality of life was moderate to severe in 60% of patients, with almost 3 out of four patients having partial or lack of urticaria control with anti-histamines. CONCLUSIONS: Our registry provides retrospective data on the real-life assistance of a large number of patients from the region. Continuous search for associated conditions and better treatment possibilities are needed, in order to control the significant impact on quality of life and the length of disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Evidence-based medicine and guidelines directing the diagnosis and treatment of patients are changing. General recommendations are moving towards an individual focus, where technology evolution allows identification of specific patterns and where 'one size fits all' no longer has a place. RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging innovations on health technology include useful tools for individualizing patients' specific conditions and follow-up. There are several preventive initiatives that aim to reduce allergic disease development, but they have no generalizable and definitive results as yet. Both omics and molecular diagnosis have provided the basis for differentiating clusters of patients, both allowing prediction of severity and also indicating appropriate management. Here we discuss examples contributing to some specific conditions we are now facing. SUMMARY: Precision medicine encompasses a personalized care of the patient, the prediction of a successful treatment, the potential prevention of a disease and its progression when present and the important active participation of the patient in the planning and guidance of the approach and management. Technology and medical innovations like omics and molecular diagnosis help for discriminating specific phenotypes/endotypes and the correct individualized interventions. The great challenge for implementing precision medicine will be the possibility of providing those advances to everyone at affordable costs. CONCLUSION: Technology and innovations in medicine are aimed to help all patients globally, providing evidence for particular conditions that need to be personally considered, involving the patient's decision while treating, predicting and preventing disease. Our aim should be to have precision medicine available everywhere at any time.

Breeders rely on genetic integrity of material from genebanks; however, admixture, mislabeling, and errors in original data can occur and be detrimental. Two hundred and fifty accessions, representing paired samples consisting of original mother plants and their in vitro counterparts from the cultivated potato collection at the International Potato Center (CIP) were fingerprinted using the Infinium 12K V2 Potato Array to confirm genetic identity of the accessions and evaluate genetic diversity of the potato collection. Diploid, triploid, and tetraploid accessions were included, representing seven cultivated potato taxa (based on Hawkes, 1990). Fingerprints between voucher mother plants maintained in the field and in vitro clones of the same accession were used to evaluate identity, relatedness, and ancestry using hierarchal clustering and model-based Bayesian admixture analyses. Generally, in vitro and field clones of the same accession grouped together; however, 11 (4.4%) accessions were mismatches genetically, and in some cases the SNP data revealed the identity of the mixed accession. SNP genotypes were used to assess genetic diversity and to evaluate inter- and intraspecific relationships along with determining population structure and hybrid origins. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that the triploids included in this study are genetically similar. Further, some genetic redundancies among individual accessions were also identified along with some putative misclassified accessions. Accessions generally clustered together based on taxonomic classification and ploidy level with some deviations. STRUCTURE analysis identified six populations with significant gene flow among the populations, as well as revealed hybrid taxa and accessions. Overall, the Infinium 12K V2 Potato Array proved useful in confirming identity and highlighting the diversity in this subset of the CIP collection, providing new insights into the accessions evaluated. This study provides a model for genetic identity of plant genetic resources collections as mistakes in conservation of these collections and in genebanks is a reality. For breeders and other users of these collections, confirmed identity is critical, as well as for quality management programs and to provide insights into the accessions evaluated.

RESUMEN

La cisticercosis es la más frecuente e importante de las enfermedades causadas por parásitos en el sistema nervioso del hombre y constituye un problema de salud pública de inmensa magnitud. Se presentó un paciente de 65 años, trabajador de la Empresa Cárnica de Holguín el cual ingiere carne de cerdo cruda, y sangre de novillo, es llevado al Cuerpo de Guardia de Medicina Interna del Hospital General Universitario Vladimir Ilich Lenin de la provincia de Holguín, Cuba, por disminución de la fuerza muscular del hemicuerpo izquierdo. Se diagnosticó neurocisticercosis activa por los antecedentes y se confirmó con estudios de neuroimágenes (tomografía computarizada).


Cysticercosis is the most common and significant parasites borne disease of the nervous system of man and represents a public health problem of immense magnitude. A 65- year- old male patient, worker of Meat Company of Holguin which ingested raw porkmeat and blood, was brought to the Internal Medicine emergency ward, of "Vladimir Ilich Lenin" General University Hospital, Holguin Province, Cuba, complaining of lack of muscle strength of the left side of the body. Active neurocysticercosis was diagnosed by history and confirmed by neuroimaging studies: computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance.

Epidemiologic studies suggest that the prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) is rising worldwide. Several reports, in fact, indicate increasing trends in the prevalence of AR especially in developing countries, likely related to the environment and climate changes and the adoption of an urbanized Western lifestyle. The primary objective of the present study was to collect information about management in real-life settings, including a characterization of typical patients' profile referring to physicians, the disease features, the common approaches to diagnostic assessments and therapeutic decisions. This was an international, multicenter, cross-sectional study conducted in adults or children (≥6 years) suffering from rhinitis confirmed by physician's diagnosis for at least one year. The 234 physicians who participated in the study included a total of 2778 patients in Egypt, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Iran, Venezuela, Argentina, Israel, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates. It was found that clinical history was the selected tool to diagnose and categorize AR patients (97.1%), with less than half of patients undergoing allergy testing, may be explaining the scarce use of immunotherapy on management of disease. Out of 2776 patients, 93.4% had somehow received a recommendation to avoid allergens and irritant agent exposure. Notably, 91.4% were receiving at least one treatment at the time of the survey, mostly oral antihistamines (79.7%) and intranasal corticosteroids (66.3%). Oral antihistamines, intranasal steroids and decongestants were considered both safe and effective by patients and physicians, preferring oral and nasal route of administration. The ISMAR registry was designed according to the most accepted epidemiological recommendations, and provides interesting information regarding the management of rhinitis from a patient and physician points of view, with many similarities between the participating countries. Further efforts are required to better manage AR and its comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Tuber appearance is highly variable in the Andean cultivated potato germplasm. The diploid backcross mapping population 'DMDD' derived from the recently sequenced genome 'DM' represents a sample of the allelic variation for tuber shape and eye depth present in the Andean landraces. Here we evaluate the utility of morphological descriptors for tuber shape for identification of genetic loci responsible for the shape and eye depth variation. RESULTS: Subjective morphological descriptors and objective tuber length and width measurements were used for assessment of variation in tuber shape and eye depth. Phenotypic data obtained from three trials and male-female based genetic maps were used for quantitative trait locus (QTL) identification. Seven morphological tuber shapes were identified within the population. A continuous distribution of phenotypes was found using the ratio of tuber length to tuber width and a QTL was identified in the paternal map on chromosome 10. Using toPt-437059, the marker at the peak of this QTL, the seven tuber shapes were classified into two groups: cylindrical and non-cylindrical. In the first group, shapes classified as 'compressed', 'round', 'oblong', and 'long-oblong' mainly carried a marker allele originating from the male parent. The tubers in this group had deeper eyes, for which a strong QTL was found at the same location on chromosome 10 of the paternal map. The non-cylindrical tubers classified as 'obovoid', 'elliptic', and 'elongated' were in the second group, mostly lacking the marker allele originating from the male parent. The main QTL for shape and eye depth were located in the same genomic region as the previously mapped dominant genes for round tuber shape and eye depth. A number of candidate genes underlying the significant QTL markers for tuber shape and eye depth were identified. CONCLUSIONS: Utilization of a molecular marker at the shape and eye depth QTL enabled the reclassification of the variation in general tuber shape to two main groups. Quantitative measurement of the length and width at different parts of the tuber is recommended to accompany the morphological descriptor classification to correctly capture the shape variation.
