RESUMEN

There is an enormous drive for moving toward cathode material research in LIBs due to the proposal of zero-emission electric vehicles together with the restriction of cathode materials in design. LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) attracts great research interests as high-voltage Co-free cathodes in LIBs. However, a more extensive study is required for LNMO due to its poor electrochemical performance, especially at high temperature, because of the instability of the LNMO interface. Herein, we design structural modifications using Mg and Zr to alleviate the above-mentioned drawbacks by limiting Mn dissolution and tailoring interstitial sites (which are shown by structural and electrochemical characterizations). This strategy enhances the cycle life up to 1000 cycles at both 25 and 50 °C. In addition, a thorough characterization by impedance spectroscopy is applied to give an insight into the electronic and ionic transport properties and the intricate phase transitions occurring upon oxidation and reduction.

The participation of adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) within the community is reduced compared to their peers and is a barrier to their socialization, self-determination and quality of life. Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is a key strategy for successful interventions, especially when involvement of the stakeholders takes place at all stages of the research. Co-design can be crucial for success as researchers, patients with CP and their families work together to bring the necessary elements to the interventions to be designed. The objectives will be: (1) To co-design an intervention aimed at improving the participation of adolescents with significant motor disabilities within the community in partnership with adolescents with CP, families and rehabilitation professionals. (2) To assess the feasibility of the co-design process in partnership with interested parties. The study will be based on Participatory Action Research (PAR) and will be held in Spain and Brazil. In both countries, the study will be carried out remotely with nine adolescents aged 12 to 17 years with CP, Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels IV-V, their families and six health professionals (physiotherapists and occupational therapists). Different dialogue groups will be created to involve adolescents, families and health professionals to the research's project. To manage their involvement in the co-design process, the Involvement Matrix (IM) will be used, and according to the IM phases, four steps will be included in the research: (1) Preparation; (2) Co-design; (3) Analysis: results of the intervention protocol and the study's feasibility and (4) Dissemination of results. Partnering with the public to design an intervention to improve participation can bring better results compared to protocols designed only by health professionals. In addition, it will allow for knowing the needs of adolescents with CP in terms of participation within the community. The study will also explore which roles were chosen by all participants and how they felt while actively participating in the process of co-designing an intervention protocol and their own perspectives on the use of the involvement matrix.

The P2/O3 layered oxide system is thought to benefit from a synergistic enhancement, resulting from the presence of both phases, which makes it a promising cathode material for Na-ion battery applications. Here, biphasic P2/O3-Na2/3Li0.18Mn0.8Fe0.2O2 is investigated via a combination of neutron and X-ray scattering techniques. Neutron diffraction data indicates that the O3 alkali metal site is fully occupied by Li. Real time operando X-ray diffraction data shows the structural evolution of the composite electrode - at the charged state there is no evidence of O2, OP4 or Z phases. The results presented herein provide new insight into site preference of Li in biphasic materials and highlights the value of utilizing multiple phases to achieve high performance layered cathode materials for sodium battery applications.

OBJECTIVES: A decrease in blood cell counts, especially lymphocytes and eosinophils, has been described in patients with serious Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), but there is no knowledge of their potential role of the recovery in these patients' prognosis. This article aims to analyse the effect of blood cell depletion and blood cell recovery on mortality due to COVID-19. DESIGN: This work was a retrospective, multicentre cohort study of 9644 hospitalised patients with confirmed COVID-19 from the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine's SEMI-COVID-19 Registry. SETTING: This study examined patients hospitalised in 147 hospitals throughout Spain. PARTICIPANTS: This work analysed 9644 patients (57.12% male) out of a cohort of 12,826 patients ≥18 years of age hospitalised with COVID-19 in Spain included in the SEMI-COVID-19 Registry as of 29 May 2020. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The main outcome measure of this work is the effect of blood cell depletion and blood cell recovery on mortality due to COVID-19. Univariate analysis was performed to determine possible predictors of death, and then multivariate analysis was carried out to control for potential confounders. RESULTS: An increase in the eosinophil count on the seventh day of hospitalisation was associated with a better prognosis, including lower mortality rates (5.2% vs. 22.6% in non-recoverers, OR 0.234; 95% CI, 0.154 to 0.354) and lower complication rates, especially regarding the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (8% vs. 20.1%, p = 0.000) and ICU admission (5.4% vs. 10.8%, p = 0.000). Lymphocyte recovery was found to have no effect on prognosis. Treatment with inhaled or systemic glucocorticoids was not found to be a confounding factor. CONCLUSION: Eosinophil recovery in patients with COVID-19 who required hospitalisation had an independent prognostic value for all-cause mortality and a milder course.

Asherman syndrome (AS) consists of intrauterine adhesions development as a consequence of trauma, radiation, or infection in the endometrium. Clinical symptoms include menstrual alterations, infertility, and pregnancy complications, such as recurrent pregnancy loss or abnormal placentation. In this article, we performed a narrative review of the literature, searching electronic databases (i.e., Medline, Pubmed, and Google Scholar) to summarize the available pieces of evidence about epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of AS. Hysteroscopy is essential for diagnosis and treatment, although adhesions may recur. Different postoperative therapies have been proposed to prevent recurrence and restore impaired endometrial function and promote endometrial regeneration, although these effects are usually temporary. We report a case of AS with adhesion recurrence and endometrial atrophy who was successfully treated with intrauterine autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) infusion. This therapy allowed endometrial tissue regeneration, leading to increased vascularity and endometrium thickness, and restoration of endometrial function that led to a successful pregnancy. Though there is limited experience supporting the use of PRP to improve endometrial function, it has been safely used in other fields of medicine; besides, it is easy to obtain, not expensive, and harmless being an autologous source. Future studies are encouraged to further assess this approach to treat AS.

The electrochemical properties of P2-Na2/3Mn0.8Fe0.1Ti0.1O2 layered oxide, which is a promising cathode material for rechargeable Na-ion batteries (NIBs), are evaluated with an optimized in-house ionic liquid (IL)-based electrolyte, and its performance is compared with that using carbonate-based electrolyte. The IL-based system reveals better electrochemical performance at room temperature than the carbonate electrolyte-based one at 0.1C and 1C, especially in terms of cycling stability, with a 97% capacity retention after 100 deep cycles (0.1C). The electrode/electrolyte interface is thoroughly studied in both systems by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy so as proof that the formed interface is crucial to optimizing the electrochemical performance of NIBs. The carbonate-based system shows a thin, inhomogeneous, and unstable interface layer, while the IL-based one exhibits an even thinner but homogeneous and more stable interface, which may result in safer and longer-lasting NIBs.

Eosinophilic annular erythema (EAE) is an uncommon eosinophilic dermatosis. Clinically it is characterized by recurrent episodes of annular or figurative plaques. The histopathological study shows a perivascular inflammatory infiltrate in the superficial and deep dermis, composed of lymphocytes and eosinophils. It was originally described in children. We report an adult woman who presented with recurrent erythematous annular plaques on the trunk and extremities. A biopsy showed a mainly perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate with numerous eosinophils in the dermis. Laboratory examinations revealed subclinical hypothyroidism. The lesions resolved with topical corticosteroid spontaneously after 3 months.


El eritema anular eosinofílico (EAE) es una dermatosis eosinofílica poco frecuente. Clínicamente se caracteriza por episodios recurrentes de placas anulares o figuradas.El estudio histopatológico muestra un infiltrado inflamatorio en dermis superficial y profunda, de localización perivascular y compuesto por linfocitos y eosinófilos. Se describió originariamente en niños. Presentamos una mujer adulta con episodios recurrentes de placas anulares o figuradas en el tronco y extremidades. La biopsia mostró un infiltrado linfocítico perivascular con numerosos eosinófilos en la dermis. La analítica reveló la presencia de hipotiroidismo subclínico. Las lesiones se resolvieron después de tres meses de tratamiento con una crema de corticoesteriodes.

RESUMEN

A new hydrated sodium nickel fluoride with nominal composition NaNiF3·3H2O was synthesized using an aqueous solution route. Its structure was solved by means of ab initio methods from powder X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction data. NaNiF3·3H2O crystallizes in the cubic crystal system, space group Pn3̅ with a = 7.91968(4) Å. The framework, derived from the ReO3 structure type, is built from NaX6 and NiX6 (X = O, F) corner-shared octahedra, in which F and O atoms are randomly distributed on a single anion site. The 2a × 2a × 2a superstructure arises from the strict alternate three-dimensional linking of NaX6 and NiX6 octahedra together with the simultaneous tilts of the octahedra from the cube axis (φ = 31.1°), with a significant participation of hydrogen bonding. NaNiF3·3H2O corresponds to a fully cation-ordered variant of the In(OH)3 structure, easily recognizable when formulated as NaNi(XH)6 (X = O, F). It constitutes one of the rare examples for the a(+)a(+)a(+) tilting scheme with 1:1 cation ordering in perovskite-related compounds. The Curie-like magnetic behavior well-reflects the isolated paramagnetic Ni(2+) centers without worth mentioning interactions. While X-ray and neutron diffraction data evidence Na/Ni order in combination with O/F disorder as a main feature of this fluoride, results from Raman and magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopies support the existence of specific anion arrangements in isolated square windows identified in structural refinements. In particular, formation of water molecules derives from unfavorable FH bond formation.

INTRODUCTION: Microthrombosis is often observed in lupus nephritis (LN) lesions, but its clinical significance is unknown. We evaluated the clinicopathologic correlations of renal microthrombosis and inflammatory markers in LN. METHODS: Kidney biopsies from 58 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) proliferative nephritis were analyzed with immunohistochemistry (IHC) for intravascular platelet aggregates (CD61), macrophagic infiltration (CD68), and activated complement deposition (C4d). Clinical data at the time of kidney biopsy and follow-up were analyzed with regard to pathologic IHC data. RESULTS: Microthrombosis was present in 52% of the tissues. It was significantly more prevalent in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) (62% versus 42%). The presence of microthrombosis significantly correlated with higher macrophagic infiltration. Macrophagic infiltration but not microthrombosis was significantly correlated with C4d deposition. Only macrophagic infiltration showed a correlation with SLE and renal activity (proteinuria and active sediment), whereas neither the presence of CD61+ microthrombi nor the extent of C4d deposition correlated with LN severity or outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Microthrombosis is associated with higher macrophagic infiltration in LN but does not seem to increase independently the severity of renal damage. Macrophagic infiltration was the best marker of SLE and renal activity in this LN series.

OBJECTIVE: Hypoxia is a prominent feature in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovium. However, its contribution to the pathogenesis of RA remains unclear. We undertook this study to systematically characterize the changes in gene expression induced by hypoxia in synovial fibroblasts. METHODS: We used microarray expression profiling in paired normoxic and hypoxic cultures of healthy synovial fibroblasts (HSFs) and RA synovial fibroblasts (RASFs). We used Student's paired t-test with Benjamini and Hochberg multiple testing correction to determine statistical significance. Validation of microarray data was performed by quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis of selected genes. Biologic pathways differentially modulated by hypoxia in RASFs or HSFs were identified using unsupervised Ingenuity Pathways Analysis. RESULTS: Hypoxia induced significant changes in the expression of a large group of genes in both HSFs and RASFs. In RASFs, we observed a lower number of hypoxia-regulated genes and partial differences in their functional categories. The number of differentially expressed genes in RASFs compared with HSFs was significantly increased by hypoxia. Multiple gene sets involved in energy metabolism, intracellular signal transduction, angiogenesis, and immune and inflammatory pathways were significantly modified, the last in both proinflammatory and antiinflammatory directions. CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate that hypoxia induces significant changes in gene expression in HSFs and RASFs and identify differences between RASF and HSF profiles. The hypoxia-induced gene expression program in synovial fibroblasts identifies new factors and pathways relevant to understanding their contribution to the pathogenesis of chronic arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether the use of platelet immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers improves the sensitivity of histological methods to detect microthrombosis in SLE nephritis and aPLs and to analyse the clinicopathological correlations of microthrombosis in this setting. METHODS: Kidney biopsy specimens from 65 patients with SLE, including 36 with positive aPLs, were studied by IHC using antibodies against platelet glycoproteins CD41 and CD61. Clinical data at the time of kidney biopsy and during a mean follow-up of 7.5 years after biopsy were recorded and analysed with regard to histological or IHC data. RESULTS: Histological lesions previously defined as APS nephropathy were found in 33% of the SLE kidney biopsies and were not associated with positive aPLs. Microthrombi detected as intravascular CD61(+) platelet deposits were present in 43% of the tissues and were significantly associated with positive aPLs, but not with histological APS nephropathy, nephritis manifestations nor with renal outcome. Histological APS lesions but not CD61(+) microthrombi correlated with an older age at nephritis presentation, previous cardiovascular risk factors and worse renal outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Immunodetection of intravascular CD61(+) platelet aggregates is more sensitive than histological evaluation to detect acute microthrombosis and provides a better correlation with aPLs in SLE patients. In contrast, histological lesions consistent with APS nephropathy were not associated with aPLs but with cardiovascular risk factors and worse renal outcome.

We explore gender, class and geographical inequalities in health of the population aged over 65 years in Spain. We gathered data from the 1997 National Health Survey, 1999 hospital discharge data, 1998 mortality data from vital statistics, and from the 1999 National Survey on Disabilities. Health related behaviors (tobacco and alcohol consumption, eating disorders and physical activity), self-rated health, chronic health problems, functional capacity, and health service utilization are described by gender and social class. Mortality rates among the elderly are compared between the 52 Spanish provinces. Women and members of the lower social classes present worse levels of self-rated health. Tobacco and alcohol consumption are more frequent among men than among women. Physical activity appears correlated to the every-day activities, men and those in the higher classes adopt sedentary habits in a greater proportion. Functional dependency is more frequent among women than among men, showing a clear pattern of inequality. As in other studies, the highest mortality rates were located in the southern part of Spain.
