RESUMEN

Most published data on mite infestation rates in semi-arid regions have been collected over only 3 or 4 months during a specific period of the year. Therefore, the aim of this study was to observe parasite-host dynamics of hygienic and non-hygienic Africanized bee colonies considering environmental factors that may influence Varroa destructor mite infestation rates in a semi-arid region. To this end, the brood puncture method was applied to 37 colonies, forming two groups, namely G1, encompassing 16 hygienic colonies, and G2, comprising 21 non-hygienic colonies. After forming the groups, 300 worker bees from each colony were examined monthly for mite infestations and the data were correlated with climatological records. The monthly infestation average was considered low, below 10%, except in November, when it reached 12.19% ± 6.45. No statistically significant difference was observed for inter-group infestation rates (P > 0.05). When mite infestation rates were associated with climatic variables, they were linked to colony losses (32%) due to swarming. No significant correlations between hygienic behaviour and parasite infestation rates were noted. Nonetheless, these results support the idea that there is no need to apply acaricides for V. destructor control in Brazil.

RESUMEN

This study is aimed at evaluating the effect of different extenders on the cryopreservation of semen from Africanized honeybees (A. mellifera). Semen from honeybee drones from 10 different colonies was obtained by endophallus exposure technique and immediately evaluated for motility, viability using fluorescent probes, functional membrane integrity using the water test, and morphology. Samples from each colony were divided in three aliquots and subjected to a dilution ratio of 12:1 (diluent: semen) using Tris, Tris + egg yolk (Tris+EY), and Collins extender. Samples were cryopreserved and stored in liquid nitrogen for one week and then rewarmed and reevaluated. Immediate dilution provoked no significant effect on sperm motility and functional membrane integrity, regardless of the extender used; however, the greatest values (P < 0.05) for normal sperm morphology were found at the use of isolate Tris (69.3 ± 1.9%). After thawing, there were no significant differences among extenders with relation to the preservation of sperm motility, viability, and functional membrane integrity, but the Tris extender provided the highest post-thawing values (P < 0.05) for sperm normal morphology (49.2 ± 4.9%) while the Collins extender provoked the highest amounts (P < 0.05) of curled tail defects (67.5 ± 3.2%). Moreover, the Tris was the only extender at preserving the proportion of normal sperm after thawing similar to what was verified for fresh samples. In summary, we suggest the use of a Tris-based extender for the cryopreservation of Africanized honeybee semen.

The Africanized bee (Apis mellifera L) has been the subject of recurrent studies in different parts of the world, much is known about workers and queens of africanized bees in different regions and different biomes, however little is known about drones and much less or almost nothing about the Africanized drones located in the Brazilian semi-arid region and the effects of the caatinga biome. The present study aimed to observe the variations in abdomen size, body size and weight of Africanized drones from the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil in the caatinga biome, in order to pioneer a pattern for the evaluated parameters, which have not yet been if they knew for sure. A sampling of 100 drones from different colonies was carried out, hall located in the same apoiar and under the same geographical and management conditions. Through the collected data, the patterns of morphometric parameters and body weight in Africanized drones were verified in a pioneering way, thus being able to characterize these animals located in a semi-arid region on the effects of the caatinga biome.

RESUMEN

Africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) are abundant and widely adaptable insects that spread rapidly in tropical environments. However, their strong defensive instinct can lead to attacks on humans and animals, causing disturbances in cities. This study aimed to evaluate the nesting characteristics of Africanized honeybees in Mossoró, RN, to generate relevant information for the control of the population of these insects and prevent accidents in urban areas in the Brazilian Semiarid. This survey was conducted from April 2015 to March 2018. The following information on swarms was collected from 487 recorded occurrences: date of survey, structure of the bee site, occurrence of nesting, population size, defensiveness of the bees, and presence of queen and drones. Although the swarms reproduced throughout the year, the breeding of queens and drones increased in the rainy season (January-June). Peak swarming occurred in April-September, when there is greater availability of flowers in the region and the average ambient temperature is mild. The swarms adopted a generalist approach when choosing their nesting site, occupying structures such as tires, tree trunks, buckets, sewage, and cardboard boxes. Most swarms were found in open sites (exposed swarms). The Africanized honeybees were more selective when looking for a nest construction site than when looking for a temporary site for landing and resting. The swarms were generally small (up to 20,000 bees) and not very defensive, which facilitated their rescue in populous urban areas.(AU)

Hygienic behavior is a desirable trait in honey bees (Apis mellifera L.), as hygienic bees quickly remove diseased brood, interrupting the infectious cycle. Hygienic lines of honey bees appear to be more sensitive to the odors of dead and diseased honey bee brood, and Africanized honey bees are generally more hygienic than are European honey bees. We compared the number of sensilla placodea, antennal sensory structures involved in the perception of odor, in 10 bees from each of six hygienic and four non-hygienic colonies of Africanized honey bees. The sensilla placodea of three of the terminal segments (flagellomeres) of the right antenna of each bee were counted with a scanning electron microscope. There were no significant differences in the mean numbers of sensilla placodea between the hygienic and non-hygienic bees, though the variance was higher in the hygienic group. Flagellomere 4 had significantly more sensilla placodea than flagellomeres 6 and 8. However, there was no significant difference between the other two flagellomeres. As hygienic bees are capable of identifying dead, injured, or infested brood inside a capped brood cell, sensilla placodea probably have an important role in enabling worker bees to sense sick brood. However, we did not find greater numbers of this sensory structure in the antennae of hygienic, compared to non-hygienic Africanized honey bees.
