RESUMEN

Layered transition metal oxide cathode materials can exhibit high energy densities in Li-ion batteries, in particular, those with high Ni contents such as LiNiO2. However, the stability of these Ni-rich materials often decreases with increased nickel content, leading to capacity fade and a decrease in the resulting electrochemical performance. Thin alumina coatings have the potential to improve the longevity of LiNiO2 cathodes by providing a protective interface to stabilize the cathode surface. The structures of alumina coatings and the chemistry of the coating-cathode interface are not fully understood and remain the subject of investigation. Greater structural understanding could help to minimize excess coating, maximize conductive pathways, and maintain high capacity and rate capability while improving capacity retention. Here, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, paired with powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy, is used to provide insight into the structures of the Al2O3 coatings on LiNiO2. To do this, we performed a systematic study as a function of coating thickness and used LiCoO2, a diamagnetic model, and the material of interest, LiNiO2. 27Al magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra acquired for thick 10 wt % coatings on LiCoO2 and LiNiO2 suggest that in both cases, the coatings consist of disordered four- and six-coordinate Al-O environments. However, 27Al MAS NMR spectra acquired for thinner 0.2 wt % coatings on LiCoO2 identify additional phases believed to be LiCo1-xAlxO2 and LiAlO2 at the coating-cathode interface. 6,7Li MAS NMR and T1 measurements suggest that similar mixing takes place near the interface for Al2O3 on LiNiO2. Furthermore, reproducibility studies have been undertaken to investigate the effect of the coating method on the local structure, as well as the role of the substrate.

RESUMEN

A series of arylazopyrazole-loaded metal-organic frameworks were synthesized with the general formula Zn2(BDC)2(DABCO)(AAP)x (BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate; DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]octane; AAP = arylazopyrazole guest). The empty framework adopts a large pore tetragonal structure. Upon occlusion of the E-AAP guests, the frameworks contract to form narrow pore tetragonal structures. The extent of framework contraction is dependent on guest shapes and pendant groups and ranges between 1.5 and 5.8%. When irradiated with 365 nm light, the framework expands due to the photoisomerization of E-AAP to Z-AAP. The proportion of Z-isomer at the photostationary state varies between 19 and 57% for the AAP guests studied and appears to be limited by the framework which inhibits further isomerization once fully expanded. Interestingly, confinement within the framework significantly extends the thermal half-life of the Z-AAP isomers to a maximum of approximately 56 years. This finding provides scope for the design of photoresponsive host-guest complexes with high stability of the metastable isomer for long-duration information or energy storage applications.

RESUMEN

Solar thermal fuel (STF) materials store energy through light-induced changes in the structures of photoactive molecular groups, and the stored energy is released as heat when the system undergoes reconversion to the ground-state structure. Solid-state STF devices could be useful for a range of applications; however, the light-induced structural changes required for energy storage are often limited or prevented by dense molecular packing in condensed phases. Recently, polymers have been proposed as effective solid-state STF platforms, as they can offer the bulk properties of solid materials while retaining the molecular-level free volume and/or mobility to enable local structural changes in photoresponsive groups. Light-induced energy storage and macroscopic heat release have been demonstrated for polymers with photoisomerizable azobenzene side groups. However, the mechanism of energy storage and the link between the polymer structure, energy density and storage duration has not yet been explored in detail. In this work, we present a systematic study of methacrylate- and acrylate-based polymers with azobenzene side groups to establish the mechanism of energy storage and release and the factors affecting energy density and reconversion kinetics. For polymers with directly attached azobenzene side groups, the energy storage properties are in line with previous work on similar systems, and the photoisomerization and reconversion properties of the azobenzene side groups mirror those of molecular azobenzene. However, the inclusion of an alkyl linker between the azobenzene side group and the backbone significantly increases the photoswitching efficiency, giving almost quantitative conversion to the Z isomeric state. The presence of the alkyl linker also reduces the glass transition temperature and leads to faster spontaneous thermal reconversion to the E isomeric form, but in all cases, half-lives of more than 4 days are observed in the solid state, which provides scope for applications requiring daily energy storage-release cycles. The maximum gravimetric energy density observed is 143 J g-1, which represents an increase of up to 44% compared to polymers with directly attached azobenzene moieties.

RESUMEN

Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) are emerging as promising devices for energy storage applications. Porous solids, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are well suited as electrode materials for technologies involving bulkier charge carriers. However, only limited progress has been made using pristine MOFs, primarily due to lack of redox-active organic groups in the materials. In this work a azo-functional MOF, namely UiO-abdc, is presented as an electrode compound for sodium-ion insertion. The MOF delivers a stable capacity (∼100 mA h g-1) over 150 cycles, and post-cycling characterisation validates the stability of the MOF and participation of the azo-group in charge storage. This study can accelerate the realisation of pristine solids, such as MOFs and other porous organic compounds, as battery materials.

RESUMEN

Interfaces between aqueous electrolytes and nanoporous carbons are involved in a number of technological applications such as energy storage and capacitive deionization. Nuclear magnetic spectroscopy is a very useful tool to characterize ion adsorption in such systems thanks to its nuclei specificity and the ability to distinguish between ions in the bulk and in pores. We use complementary methods (density functional theory, molecular dynamics simulations, and a mesoscopic model) to investigate the relative importance of various effects on the chemical shifts of adsorbed species: ring currents, ion organization in pores of various sizes, specific ion-carbon interactions, and hydration. We show that ring currents and ion organization are predominant for the determination of chemical shifts in the case of Li+ ions and hydrogen atoms of water. For the large Rb+ and Cs+ ions, the additional effect of the hydration shell should be considered to predict chemical shifts in agreement with experiments.

RESUMEN

Aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have drawn enormous attention in stationary applications due to their high safety and low cost. However, the search for new positive electrode materials with satisfactory electrochemical performance for practical applications remains a challenge. In this work, we report a comprehensive study on the use of the vanadium tellurate (NH4)4{(VO2)2[Te2O8(OH)2]}·2H2O, which is tested for the first time as a cathode material in AZIBs.

RESUMEN

Efficient photoswitching in the solid-state remains rare, yet is highly desirable for the design of functional solid materials. In particular, for molecular solar thermal energy storage materials high conversion to the metastable isomer is crucial to achieve high energy density. Herein, we report that 4-methoxyazobenzene (MOAB) can be occluded into the pores of a metal-organic framework Zn2(BDC)2(DABCO), where BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane. The occluded MOAB guest molecules show near-quantitative E → Z photoisomerization under irradiation with 365 nm light. The energy stored within the metastable Z-MOAB molecules can be retrieved as heat during thermally-driven relaxation to the ground-state E-isomer. The energy density of the composite is 101 J g-1 and the half-life of the Z-isomer is 6 days when stored in the dark at ambient temperature.

RESUMEN

Conjugated alkali metal dicarboxylates have recently received attention for applications as organic anode materials in lithium- and sodium-ion batteries. In order to understand and optimise these materials, it is important to be able to characterise both the long-range and local aspects of the crystal structure, which may change during battery cycling. Furthermore, some materials can display polymorphism or hydration behaviour. NMR crystallography, which combines long-range crystallographic information from diffraction with local information from solid-state NMR via interpretation aided by DFT calculations, is one such approach, but this has not yet been widely applied to conjugated dicarboxylates. In this work, we evaluate the application of NMR crystallography for a set of model lithium and sodium dicarboxylate salts. We investigate the effect of different DFT geometry optimisation strategies and find that the calculated NMR parameters are not systematically affected by the choice of optimisation method, although the inclusion of dispersion correction schemes is important to accurately reproduce the experimental unit cell parameters. We also observe hydration behaviour for two of the sodium salts and provide insight into the structure of an as-yet uncharacterised structure of sodium naphthalenedicarboxylate. This highlights the importance of sample preparation and characterisation for organic sodium-ion battery anode materials in particular.

RESUMEN

A series of azobenzene-loaded metal-organic frameworks were synthesized with the general formula M2(BDC)2(DABCO)(AB)x (M = Zn, Co, Ni, and Cu; BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate; DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane; and AB = azobenzene), herein named M-1⊃ABx. Upon occlusion of AB, each framework undergoes guest-induced breathing, whereby the pores contract around the AB molecules forming a narrow-pore (np) framework. The loading level of the framework is found to be very sensitive to the synthetic protocol and although the stable loading level is close to M-1⊃AB1.0, higher loading levels can be achieved for the Zn, Co, and Ni frameworks prior to vacuum treatment, with a maximum composition for the Zn framework of Zn-1⊃AB1.3. The degree of pore contraction upon loading is modulated by the inherent flexibility of the metal-carboxylate paddlewheel unit in the framework, with the Zn-1⊃AB1.0 showing the biggest contraction of 6.2% and the more rigid Cu-1⊃AB1.0 contracting by only 1.7%. Upon heating, each composite shows a temperature-induced phase transition to an open-pore (op) framework, and the enthalpy and onset temperatures of the phase transition are affected by the framework flexibility. For all composites, UV irradiation causes trans → cis isomerization of the occluded AB molecules. The population of cis-AB at the photostationary state and the thermal stability of the occluded cis-AB molecules are also found to correlate with the flexibility of the framework. Over a full heating-cooling cycle between 0 and 200 °C, the energy stored within the metastable cis-AB molecules is released as heat, with a maximum energy density of 28.9 J g-1 for Zn-1⊃AB1.0. These findings suggest that controlled confinement of photoswitches within flexible frameworks is a potential strategy for the development of solid-solid phase change materials for energy storage.

RESUMEN

Porous carbonaceous materials have many important industrial applications including energy storage, water purification, and adsorption of volatile organic compounds. Most of their applications rely upon the adsorption of molecules or ions within the interior pore volume of the carbon particles. Understanding the behaviour and properties of adsorbate species on the molecular level is therefore key for optimising porous carbon materials, but this is very challenging owing to the complexity of the disordered carbon structure and the presence of multiple phases in the system. In recent years, NMR spectroscopy has emerged as one of the few experimental techniques that can resolve adsorbed species from those outside the pore network. Adsorbed, or "in-pore" species are shielded with respect to their free (or "ex-pore") counterparts. This shielding effect arises primarily due to ring currents in the carbon structure in the presence of a magnetic field, such that the observed chemical shift differences upon adsorption are independent of the observed nucleus to a first approximation. Theoretical modelling has played an important role in rationalising and explaining these experimental observations. Together, experiments and simulations have enabled a large amount of information to be gained on the adsorption and diffusion of adsorbed species, as well as on the structural and magnetic properties of the porous carbon adsorbent. Here, we review the methodological developments and applications of NMR spectroscopy and related modelling in this field, and provide perspectives on possible future applications and research directions.

RESUMEN

In situ NMR spectroscopy is a powerful technique to investigate charge storage mechanisms in carbon-based supercapacitors thanks to its ability to distinguish ionic and molecular species adsorbed in the porous electrodes from those in the bulk electrolyte. The NMR peak corresponding to the adsorbed species shows a clear change of chemical shift as the applied potential difference is varied. This variation in chemical shift is thought to originate from a combination of ion reorganisation in the pores and changes in ring current shifts due to the changes of electronic density in the carbon. While previous Density Functional Theory calculations suggested that the electronic density has a large effect, the relative contributions of these two effects is challenging to untangle. Here, we use mesoscopic simulations to simulate NMR spectra and investigate the relative importance of ion reorganisation and ring currents on the resulting chemical shift. The model is able to predict chemical shifts in good agreement with NMR experiments and indicates that the ring currents are the dominant contribution. A thorough analysis of a specific electrode/electrolyte combination for which detailed NMR experiments have been reported allows us to confirm that local ion reorganisation has a very limited effect but the relative quantities of ions in pores of different sizes, which can change upon charging/discharging, can lead to a significant effect. Our findings suggest that in situ NMR spectra of supercapacitors may provide insights into the electronic structure of carbon materials in the future.

RESUMEN

More than 3900 crystalline borates, including borate minerals and synthetic inorganic borates, in addition to a wealth of industrially-important boron-containing glasses, have been discovered and characterized. Of these compounds, 99.9 % contain only the traditional triangular BO3 and tetrahedral BO4 units, which polymerize into superstructural motifs. Herein, a mixed metal K5Ba2(B10O17)2(BO2) with linear BO2 structural units was obtained, pushing the boundaries of structural diversity and providing a direct strategy toward the maximum thresholds of birefringence for optical materials design. 11B solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a ubiquitous tool in the study of glasses and optical materials; here, density functional theory-based NMR crystallography guided the direct characterization of BO2 structural units. The full anisotropic shift and quadrupolar tensors of linear BO2 were extracted from K5Ba2(B10O17)2(BO2) containing BO2, BO3, and BO4 and serve as guides to the identification of this powerful moiety in future and, potentially, previously-characterized borate minerals, ceramics, and glasses.

RESUMEN

Tris(8-hydroxyquinolinate)aluminium (Alq3 ) is a metal-organic coordination complex, which is a widely used electroluminescent material in organic light-emitting diode technology. Crystalline Alq3 is known to occur in five polymorphic forms (denoted α, ß, γ, δ, and ε), although the structures of some of these polymorphs have been the subject of considerable debate. In particular, the structure of α-Alq3 , which is a model for the local structure in amorphous films used in devices, is highly complex and has never been conclusively solved. In this work, we use solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the local structure of four Alq3 samples. We find that the first structure proposed for α-Alq3 is inconsistent with all of the samples studied, and DFT calculations further suggest that this structure is energetically unfavourable. Instead, samples containing the meridional (mer) isomeric form are found to contain local structures consistent with ε-Alq3 , and a sample containing the facial (fac) isomeric form is consistent with a mixture of γ-Alq3 and δ-Alq3 . We also investigate the influence of different strategies for dispersion correction in DFT geometry optimisations. We find that a recently proposed modified semiempirical dispersion correction scheme gives good agreement with experiment. Furthermore, the DFT calculations also show that distinction between mer and fac isomers on the basis of ηQ that has been assumed in previous work is not always justified.

RESUMEN

Na2 Ti3 O7 (NTO) is considered a promising anode material for Na-ion batteries due to its layered structure with an open framework and low and safe average operating voltage of 0.3 V vs. Na+ /Na. However, its poor electronic conductivity needs to be addressed to make this material attractive for practical applications among other anode choices. Here, we report a safe, controllable and affordable method using urea that significantly improves the rate performance of NTO by producing surface defects such as oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups, and the secondary phase Na2 Ti6 O13 . The enhanced electrochemical performance agrees with the higher Na+ ion diffusion coefficient, higher charge carrier density and reduced bandgap observed in these samples, without the need of nanosizing and/or complex synthetic strategies. A comprehensive study using a combination of diffraction, microscopic, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques supported by computational studies based on DFT calculations, was carried out to understand the effects of this treatment on the surface, chemistry and electronic and charge storage properties of NTO. This study underscores the benefits of using urea as a strategy for enhancing the charge storage properties of NTO and thus, unfolding the potential of this material in practical energy storage applications.

RESUMEN

We study the connection between personal and professional behavior by introducing usage of a marital infidelity website as a measure of personal conduct. Police officers and financial advisors who use the infidelity website are significantly more likely to engage in professional misconduct. Results are similar for US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defendants accused of white-collar crimes, and companies with chief executive officers (CEOs) or chief financial officers (CFOs) who use the website are more than twice as likely to engage in corporate misconduct. The relation is not explained by a wide range of regional, firm, executive, and cultural variables. These findings suggest that personal and workplace behavior are closely related.

RESUMEN

The discovery of inverse vulcanization has allowed stable polymers to be made from elemental sulfur, an unwanted by-product of the petrochemicals industry. However, further development of both the chemistry and applications is handicapped by the restricted choice of cross-linkers and the elevated temperatures required for polymerisation. Here we report the catalysis of inverse vulcanization reactions. This catalytic method is effective for a wide range of crosslinkers reduces the required reaction temperature and reaction time, prevents harmful H2S production, increases yield, improves properties, and allows crosslinkers that would be otherwise unreactive to be used. Thus, inverse vulcanization becomes more widely applicable, efficient, eco-friendly and productive than the previous routes, not only broadening the fundamental chemistry itself, but also opening the door for the industrialization and broad application of these fascinating materials.

RESUMEN

The Earth's transition zone, at depths of 410-660 km, while being composed of nominally anhydrous magnesium silicate minerals, may be subject to significant hydration. Little is known about the mechanism of hydration, despite the vital role this plays in the physical and chemical properties of the mantle, leading to a need for improved structural characterization. Here we present an ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS) investigation of semihydrous (1.65 wt % H2O) and fully hydrous (3.3 wt % H2O) wadsleyite. Following the AIRSS process, k-means clustering was used to select sets of structures with duplicates removed, which were then subjected to further geometry optimization with tighter constraints prior to NMR calculations. Semihydrous models identify a ground-state structure (Mg3 vacancies, O1-H hydroxyls) that aligns with a number of previous experimental observations. However, predicted NMR parameters fail to reproduce low-intensity signals observed in solid-state NMR spectra. In contrast, the fully hydrous models produced by AIRSS, which enable both isolated and clustered defects, are able to explain observed NMR signals via just four low-enthalpy structures: (i) a ground state, with isolated Mg3 vacancies and O1-H hydroxyls; (ii/iii) edge-sharing Mg3 vacancies with O1-H and O3-H species; and (iv) edge-sharing Mg1 and Mg3 vacancies with O1-H, O3-H, and O4-H hydroxyls. Thus, the combination of advanced structure searching approaches and solid-state NMR spectroscopy is able to provide new and detailed insight into the structure of this important mantle mineral.

RESUMEN

A photochromic anil, N-(3,5-di-t-butylsalicylidene)-4-amino-pyridine, has been studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear magic-angle spinning NMR, and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Interpretation of the solid-state NMR data on the basis of calculated chemical shifts confirms the structure is primarily composed of molecules in the ground-state enol tautomer, whereas thermally activated cis-keto and photoisomerised trans-keto states exist as low-level defects with populations that are too low to detect experimentally. Variable temperature 13 C NMR data reveal evidence for solid-state dynamics, which is found to be associated with fast rotational motion of t-butyl groups and 180° flips of the pyridine ring, contrasting the time-averaged structure obtained by X-ray diffraction. Comparison of calculated chemical shifts for the full crystal structure and an isolated molecule also reveals evidence for an intermolecular hydrogen bond involving the pyridine ring and an adjacent imine carbon, which facilitates the flipping motion. The DFT calculations also reveal that the molecular conformation in the crystal structure is very close to the energetic minimum for an isolated molecule, indicating that the ring dynamics arise as a result of considerable steric freedom of the pyridine ring and which also allows the molecule to adopt a favourable conformation for photochromism.

RESUMEN

With amyloid diseases poised to become a major health burden in countries with aging populations, diagnostic molecules that aid the detection of amyloid in vitro and in vivo are of considerable clinical value. Understanding how such ligands recognize their amyloid targets would help to design diagnostics that target specific amyloid types associated with a particular disease, but methods to provide comprehensive information are underdeveloped. Here, solid-state NMR is used to determine the molecular orientation of the amyloid diagnostic 1-fluoro-2,5-bis[( E)-3-carboxy-4-hydroxystyryl]-benzene (FSB) when bound to fibrils of the Alzheimer's amyloid-ß polypeptide aligned on a planar substrate. The 19F NMR spectrum of the aligned complex reveals that FSB is oriented approximately parallel with the fibril long axis and bridges four hydrogen-bonded ß-sheets. In addition to providing atomic details to aid the design of amyloid-specific diagnostics, this approach will also illuminate the molecular mechanisms of accessory molecules in amyloid disease.
